Spin-polarized tunneling through randomly transparent magnetic junctions: Reentrant magnetoresistance approaching the Julliere limit

Electron conductance in planar magnetic tunnel junctions with long-range barrier disorder is studied within Glauber-eikonal approximation enabling exact disorder ensemble averaging by means of the Holtsmark-Markov method. This allows us to address a hitherto unexplored regime of the tunneling magnetoresistance effect characterized by the crossover from momentum-conserving to random tunneling as a function of the defect concentration. We demonstrate that such a crossover results in a reentrant magnetoresistance: It goes through a pronounced minimum before reaching disorder- and geometry-independent Julliere's value at high defect concentrations.

Coherent backscattering of Bose-Einstein condensates in two-dimensional disorder potentials

We study quantum transport of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in a two-dimensional disorder potential. In the limit of vanishing atom-atom interaction, a sharp cone in the angle-resolved density of the scattered matter wave is observed, arising from constructive interference between amplitudes propagating along reversed scattering paths. Weak interaction transforms this coherent backscattering peak into a pronounced dip, indicating destructive instead of constructive interference. We reproduce this result, obtained from the numerical integration of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, by a diagrammatic theory of weak localization in presence of a nonlinearity.

Spin-polarized Quantum Transport in Mesoscopic Conductors: Computational Concepts and Physical Phenomena

Mesoscopic conductors are electronic systems of sizes in between nano- and micrometers, and often of reduced dimensionality. In the phase-coherent regime at low temperatures, the conductance of these devices is governed by quantum interference effects, such as the Aharonov-Bohm effect and conductance fluctuations as prominent examples. While first measurements of quantum charge transport date back to the 1980s, spin phenomena in mesoscopic transport have moved only recently into the focus of attention, as one branch of the field of spintronics. The interplay between quantum coherence with confinement-, disorder- or interaction-effects gives rise to a variety of unexpected spin phenomena in mesoscopic conductors and allows moreover to control and engineer the spin of the charge carriers: spin interference is often the basis for spin-valves, -filters, -switches or -pumps. Their underlying mechanisms may gain relevance on the way to possible future semiconductor-based spin devices. A quantitative theoretical understanding of spin-dependent mesoscopic transport calls for developing efficient and flexible numerical algorithms, including matrix-reordering techniques within Green function approaches, which we will explain, review and employ.

Charge-memory polaron effect in molecular junctions

The charge-memory effect, bistability and switching between charged and neutral states of a molecular junction, as observed in recent STM experiments, is considered within a minimal polaron model. We show that in the case of strong electron-vibron interaction the rate of spontaneous quantum switching between charged and neutral states is exponentially suppressed at zero bias voltage but can be tuned through a wide range of finite switching timescales upon changing the bias. We further find that, while junctions with symmetric voltage drop give rise to random switching at finite bias, asymmetric junctions exhibit hysteretic behavior enabling controlled switching. Lifetimes and charge-voltage curves are calculated by the master equation method for weak coupling to the leads and at stronger coupling by the equation-of-motion method for nonequilibrium Green functions.

Random Wave Functions with boundary and normalization constraints: Quantum statistical physics meets quantum chaos

We present an improved version of Berry's ansatz able to incorporate exactly the existence of boundaries and the correct normalization of the eigenfunction into an ensemble of random waves. We then reformulate the Random Wave conjecture showing that in its new version it is a statement about the universal nature of eigenfunction fluctuations in systems with chaotic classical dynamics. The emergence of the universal results requires the use of both semiclassical methods and a new expansion for a very old problem in quantum statistical physics

Zeeman ratchets: pure spin current generation in mesoscopic conductors with non-uniform magnetic fields

We consider the possibility to employ a quantum wire realized in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) as a spin ratchet. We show that a net spin current without accompanying net charge transport can be induced in the nonlinear regime by an unbiased external driving via an ac voltage applied between the contacts at the ends of the quantum wire. To achieve this we make use of the coupling of the electron spin to inhomogenous magnetic fields created by ferromagnetic stripes patterned on the semiconductor heterostructure that harbours the 2DEG. Using recursive Green function techniques we numerically study two different setups, consisting of one and two ferromagnetic stripes, respectively.

Coherent spin ratchets: A spin-orbit based quantum ratchet mechanism for spin-polarized currents in ballistic conductors

We demonstrate that the combined effect of a spatially periodic potential, lateral confinement and spin-orbit interaction gives rise to a quantum ratchet mechanism for spin-polarized currents in two-dimensional coherent conductors. Upon adiabatic ac-driving, in the absence of a static bias, the system generates a directed spin current while the total charge current is zero. We analyze the underlying mechanism by employing symmetry properties of the scattering matrix and numerically verify the effect for different setups of ballistic conductors. The spin current direction can be changed upon tuning the Fermi energy or the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling.

Nonlinear transport of Bose-Einstein condensates through mesoscopic waveguides

We study the coherent flow of interacting Bose-condensed atoms in mesoscopic waveguide geometries. Analytical and numerical methods, based on the mean-field description of the condensate, are developed to study both stationary as well as time-dependent propagation processes. We apply these methods to the propagation of a condensate through an atomic quantum dot in a waveguide, discuss the nonlinear transmission spectrum and show that resonant transport is generally suppressed due to an interaction-induced bistability phenomenon. Finally, we establish a link between the nonlinear features of the transmission spectrum and the self-consistent quasi-bound states of the quantum dot.

Effect of magnetic pair breaking on Andreev bound states and resonant supercurrent in quantum dot Josephson junctions

We propose a model for resonant Josephson tunneling through quantum dots that accounts for Cooper pair-breaking processes in the superconducting leads caused by a magnetic field or spin-flip scattering. The pair-breaking effect on the critical supercurrent $I_c$ and the Josephson current-phase relation $I(ϕ)$ is largely due to the modification of the spectrum of Andreev bound states below the reduced (Abrikosov-Gorkov) quasiparticle gap. For a quantum dot formed in a quasi-one-dimensional channel, both $I_c$ and $I(ϕ)$ can show a significant magnetic field dependence induced by pair breaking despite the suppression of the orbital magnetic field effect in the channel. This case is relevant to recent experiments on quantum dot Josephson junctions in carbon nanotubes. Pair-breaking processes are taken into account via the relation between the Andreev scattering matrix and the quasiclassical Green functions of the superconductors in the Usadel limit.

Effect of pitchfork bifurcations on the spectral statistics of Hamiltonian systems

We present a quantitative semiclassical treatment of the effects of bifurcations on the spectral rigidity and the spectral form factor of a Hamiltonian quantum system defined by two coupled quartic oscillators, which on the classical level exhibits mixed phase space dynamics. We show that the signature of a pitchfork bifurcation is two-fold: Beside the known effect of an enhanced periodic orbit contribution due to its peculiar $\hbar$-dependence at the bifurcation, we demonstrate that the orbit pair born {\em at} the bifurcation gives rise to distinct deviations from universality slightly {\em above} the bifurcation. This requires a semiclassical treatment beyond the so-called diagonal approximation. Our semiclassical predictions for both the coarse-grained density of states and the spectral rigidity, are in excellent agreement with corresponding quantum-mechanical results.

Loschmidt echo decay from local boundary perturbations

We investigate the sensitivity of the time evolution of semiclassical wave packets in two-dimensional chaotic billiards with respect to local perturbations of their boundaries. For this purpose, we address, analytically and numerically, the time decay of the Loschmidt echo (LE). We find the LE to decay exponentially in time, with the rate equal to the classical escape rate from an open billiard obtained from the original one by removing the perturbation-affected region of its boundary. Finally, we propose a principal scheme for the experimental observation of the LE decay.

Effects of short-range interactions on transport through quantum point contacts: A numerical approach

We study electronic transport through a quantum point contact, where the interaction between the electrons is approximated by a contact potential. Our numerical approach is based on the non-equilibrium Green function technique which is evaluated at Hartree-Fock level. We show that this approach allows us to reproduce relevant features of the so-called "0.7 anomaly" observed in the conductance at low temperatures, including the characteristic features in recent shot noise measurements. This is consistent with a spin-splitting interpretation of the process, and indicates that the "0.7 anomaly" should also be observable in transport experiments with ultracold fermionic atoms.

Zeeman ratchets for ballistic spin currents

We investigate the possiblity of creating directed spin-polarized currents in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) subject to an asymmetric magnetic field and an external adiabatic driving. We thereby generalize concepts of quantum charge ratchets to the case with spin. Due to the Zeeman term in the Hamiltonian, spin-up and -down electrons experience different effective potentials, which can be tailored to achieve net spin currents without corresponding charge currents. We consider ballistic, coherent transport in waveguides defined in a 2DEG, where the magnetic field modulation is induced by ferromagnetic stripes on top of the 2DEG.

Dynamical symmetry breaking in transport through molecules

We analyze the interplay between vibrational and electronic degrees of freedom in charge transport across a molecular single-electron transistor. We focus on the wide class of molecules which possess quasi-degenerate vibrational eigenstates, while no degeneracy occurs for their anionic configuration. We show that the combined effect of a thermal environment and coupling to leads, involving tunneling events charging and discharging the molecule, leads to a dynamical symmetry breaking where quasi-degenerate eigenstates acquire different occupations. This imbalance gives rise to a characteristic asymmetry of the current versus an applied gate voltage.

Nonlinear Transport of Bose-Einstein Condensates Through Waveguides with Disorder

We study the coherent flow of a guided Bose-Einstein condensate incident over a disordered region of length L. We introduce a model of disordered potential that originates from magnetic fluctuations inherent to microfabricated guides. This model allows for analytical and numerical studies of realistic transport experiments. The repulsive interaction among the condensate atoms in the beam induces different transport regimes. Below some critical interaction (or for sufficiently small L) a stationary flow is observed. In this regime, the transmission decreases exponentially with L. For strong interaction (or large L), the system displays a transition towards a time dependent flow with an algebraic decay of the time averaged transmission.

Semiclassical theory of weak antilocalization and spin relaxation in ballistic quantum dots

We develop a semiclassical theory for spin-dependent quantum transport in ballistic quantum dots. The theory is based on the semiclassical Landauer formula, that we generalize to include spin-orbit and Zeeman interaction. Within this approach, the orbital degrees of freedom are treated semiclassically, while the spin dynamics is computed quantum mechanically. Employing this method, we calculate the quantum correction to the conductance in quantum dots with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction. We find a strong sensitivity of the quantum correction to the underlying classical dynamics of the system. In particular, a suppression of weak antilocalization in integrable systems is observed. These results are attributed to the qualitatively different types of spin relaxation in integrable and chaotic quantum cavities.

Statistical description of eigenfunctions in chaotic and weakly disordered systems beyond universality

We present a semiclassical approach to eigenfunction statistics in chaotic and weakly disordered quantum systems which goes beyond Random Matrix Theory, supersymmetry techniques, and existing semiclassical methods. The approach is based on a generalization of Berry's Random Wave Model, combined with a consistent semiclassical representation of spatial two-point correlations. We derive closed expressions for arbitrary wavefunction averages in terms of universal coefficients and sums over classical paths, which contain, besides the supersymmetry results, novel oscillatory contributions. Their physical relevance is demonstrated in the context of Coulomb blockade physics.

Geometrical enhancement of the proximity effect in quantum wires with extended superconducting tunnel contacts

We study Andreev reflection in a ballistic one-dimensional channel coupled in parallel to a superconductor via a tunnel barrier of finite length $L$. The dependence of the low-energy Andreev reflection probability $R_A$ on $L$ reveals the existence of a characteristic length scale $ξ_N$ beyond which $R_A(L)$ is enhanced up to unity despite the low interfacial transparency. The Andreev reflection enhancement is due to the strong mixing of particle and hole states that builds up in contacts exceeding the coherence length $ξ_N$, leading to a small energy gap (minigap) in the density of states of the normal system. The role of the geometry of such hybrid contacts is discussed in the context of the experimental observation of zero-bias Andreev anomalies in the resistance of extended carbon nanotube/superconductor junctions in field effect transistor setups.
