An inviscid limit to an effective energy-enstrophy diffusion process

In this article we consider a stationary $N$-dimensional Galerkin-Navier-Stokes type evolution with Brownian forcing and random stirring (of arbitrarily small strength that plays the role of a regularization). We show, as a ``proof of concept'', that the stationary diffusion in an open two-dimensional cone constructed in a companion article, stands as the inviscid limit of the laws of the ``enstrophy-energy'' process of the $N$-dimensional diffusion process considered here, this regardless of the strength of the stirring. With the help of the quantitative condensation bounds of the companion article, we infer quantitative inviscid condensation bounds, which for suitable forcings show an attrition of all but the lowest modes in the inviscid limit.

An effective energy-enstrophy diffusion process with a condensation bound

We use Gaussian measure on $\mathbb{R}^N$ to define the coefficients of an elliptic diffusion and show that it lives in an open cone of $\mathbb{R}^2$. One component represents enstrophy and the other energy. We establish the existence and uniqueness of a stationary distribution for this diffusion. Owing to the special properties of the coefficients of this diffusion, we derive a condensation bound, which controls the distance to $1$ of the ratio of the expected energy to the expected enstrophy (this ratio is at most $1$ with our normalization). In a companion article, as a ``proof of concept'', we show that the diffusion constructed in this work is the inviscid limit of the laws of the ``enstrophy-energy'' process of a stationary $N$-dimensional Galerkin-Navier-Stokes type evolution with Brownian forcing and random stirring (the strength of which can be made to go to zero in the inviscid limit, and which plays the role of a regularization).

Global dynamics in the 3D pressureless Euler-Poisson system for ions

In this work we consider the pressureless Euler-Poisson system on $\mathbb{R}^3$ describing ion dynamics, which is a common model in the study of cold plasma. We prove global regularity and scattering for small, irrotational velocity fields around a constant density profile. At the heart of the result is a dispersive mechanism leading to amplitude decay at the full rate in $3$D. This fast decay feature and a favourable structure of the nonlinearity allow to control quadratic interactions globally.

Long-time stability of a stably stratified rest state in the inviscid 2D Boussinesq equation

We establish the nonlinear stability on a timescale $O(\varepsilon^{-2})$ of a linearly, stably stratified rest state in the inviscid Boussinesq system on $\mathbb{R}^2$. Here $\varepsilon>0$ denotes the size of an initially sufficiently small, Sobolev regular and localized perturbation. A similar statement also holds for the related dispersive SQG equation. At the core of this result is a dispersive effect due to anisotropic internal gravity waves. At the linearized level, this gives rise to amplitude decay at a rate of $t^{-1/2}$, as observed in [EW15]. We establish a refined version of this, and propagate nonlinear control via a detailed analysis of nonlinear interactions using the method of partial symmetries developed in [GPW23].

Increased lifespan for 3D compressible Euler flows with rotation

We consider the compressible Euler equation with a Coriolis term and prove a lower bound on the time of existence of solutions in terms of the speed of rotation, sound speed and size of the initial data. Along the way, we obtain precise dispersive decay estimates for the linearized equation. In the incompressible limit, this improves current bounds for the incompressible Euler-Coriolis system as well.

On the stability of vacuum in the screened Vlasov-Poisson equation

We study the asymptotic behavior of small data solutions to the screened Vlasov-Poisson equation on $\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{R}^d$ near vacuum. We show that for dimensions $d\geq 2$, under mild assumptions on localization (in terms of spatial moments) and regularity (in terms of at most three Sobolev derivatives) solutions scatter freely. In dimension $d=1$, we obtain a long time existence result in analytic regularity.

Modified scattering dynamics in the Vlasov-Poisson equation near an attractive point mass

We study the long-time behavior of radially symmetric solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson equation consisting of an attractive point mass and a small, suitably localized and absolutely continuous distribution of particles: if the latter is initially localized on hyperbolic trajectories for the associated Kepler problem, we obtain global in time, unique Lagrangian solutions that asymptotically undergo a modified scattering dynamics (in the sense of distributions). A key feature of this result is its low regularity regime, which does not make use of derivative control, but can be upgraded to strong solutions and strong convergence by propagation of regularity.

The cubic NLS on the line with an inverse square potential

We establish modified scattering for solutions of the cubic NLS on the line with a repulsive inverse square potential and small localized data. The method is based on a comparison between the free and distorted Galilei vector fields and a wave packet transform.

On the stability of viscous three-dimensional rotating Couette flow

We study the stability of Couette flow in the 3d Navier-Stokes equations with rotation, as given by the Coriolis force. Hereby, the nature of linearized dynamics near Couette flow depends crucially on the force balance between background shearing and rotation, and includes lift-up or exponential instabilities, as well as a stable regime. In the latter, shearing resp. rotational inertial waves give rise to mixing and dispersive effects, which are relevant for distinct dynamical realms. Our main result quantifies these effects through enhanced dissipation and dispersive amplitude decay in both linear and nonlinear settings: in particular, we establish a nonlinear transition threshold which quantitatively improves over the setting without rotation (and increases further with rotation speed), showcasing its stabilizing effect.

Stability of viscous three-dimensional stratified Couette flow via dispersion and mixing

This article explores the stability of stratified Couette flow in the viscous $3d$ Boussinesq equations. In this system, mixing effects arise from the shearing background, and gravity acts as a restoring force leading to dispersive internal gravity waves. These mechanisms are of fundamentally different nature and relevant in complementary dynamical regimes. Our study combines them to establish a bound for the nonlinear transition threshold, which is quantitatively larger than the inverse Reynolds number $ν$, and increases with stronger stratification resp. gravity.

Nonlinear Landau damping for the Vlasov-Poisson system in $\R^3$: the Poisson equilibrium

We prove asymptotic stability of the Poisson homogeneous equilibrium among solutions of the Vlassov-Poisson system in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$. More precisely, we show that small, smooth, and localized perturbations of the Poisson equilibrium lead to global solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system, which scatter to linear solutions at a polynomial rate as $t\to\infty$. The Euclidean problem we consider here differs significantly from the classical work on Landau damping in the periodic setting, in several ways. Most importantly, the linearized problem cannot satisfy a "Penrose condition". As a result, our system contains resonances (small divisors) and the electric field is a superposition of an electrostatic component and a larger oscillatory component, both with polynomially decaying rates.

On the stability of homogeneous equilibria in the Vlasov-Poisson system on $\mathbb{R}^3$

The goal of this article is twofold. First, we investigate the linearized Vlasov-Poisson system around a family of spatially homogeneous equilibria in $\mathbb{R}^3$ (the unconfined setting). Our analysis follows classical strategies from physics and their subsequent mathematical extensions. The main novelties are a unified treatment of a broad class of analytic equilibria and the study of a class of generalized Poisson equilibria. For the former, this provides a detailed description of the associated Green's functions, including in particular precise dissipation rates (which appear to be new), whereas for the latter we exhibit explicit formulas. Second, we review the main result and ideas in our recent work on the full global nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Poisson equilibrium in $\mathbb{R}^3$.

Global Axisymmetric Euler Flows with Rotation

We construct a class of global, dynamical solutions to the 3d Euler equations near the stationary state given by uniform "rigid body" rotation. These solutions are axisymmetric, of Sobolev regularity, have non-vanishing swirl and scatter linearly, thanks to the dispersive effect induced by the rotation. To establish this, we introduce a framework that builds on the symmetries of the problem and precisely captures the anisotropic, dispersive mechanism due to rotation. This enables a fine analysis of the geometry of nonlinear interactions and allows us to propagate sharp decay bounds, which is crucial for the construction of global Euler flows.

Stability of a point charge for the repulsive Vlasov-Poisson system

We consider solutions of the repulsive Vlasov-Poisson system which are a combination of a point charge and a small gas, i.e.\ measures of the form $δ_{(\mathcal{X}(t),\mathcal{V}(t))}+μ^2d{\bf x}d{\bf v}$ for some $(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{V}):\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}^6$ and a small gas distribution $μ:\mathbb{R}\to L^2_{{\bf x},{\bf v}}$, and study asymptotic dynamics in the associated initial value problem. If initially suitable moments on $μ_0=μ(t=0)$ are small, we obtain a global solution of the above form, and the electric field generated by the gas distribution $μ$ decays at an almost optimal rate. Assuming in addition boundedness of suitable derivatives of $μ_0$, the electric field decays at an optimal rate and we derive a modified scattering dynamics for the motion of the point charge and the gas distribution. Our proof makes crucial use of the Hamiltonian structure. The linearized system is transport by the Kepler ODE, which we integrate exactly through an asymptotic action-angle transformation. Thanks to a precise understanding of the associated kinematics, moment and derivative control is achieved via a bootstrap analysis that relies on the decay of the electric field associated to $μ$. The asymptotic behavior can then be deduced from the properties of Poisson brackets in asymptotic action coordinates.

Mixing and diffusion for rough shear flows

This article addresses mixing and diffusion properties of passive scalars advected by rough ($C^α$) shear flows. We show that in general, one cannot expect a rough shear flow to increase the rate of inviscid mixing to more than that of a smooth shear without critical points. On the other hand, diffusion may be enhanced at a much faster rate. This shows that in the setting of low regularity, the interplay between inviscid mixing properties and enhanced dissipation is more intricate, and in fact contradicts some of the natural heuristics that are valid in the smooth setting.

Scattering map for the Vlasov-Poisson system

We construct (modified) scattering operators for the Vlasov-Poisson system in three dimensions, mapping small asymptotic dynamics as $t\to -\infty$ to asymptotic dynamics as $t\to +\infty$. The main novelty is the construction of modified wave operators, but we also obtain a new simple proof of modified scattering. Our analysis is guided by the Hamiltonian structure of the Vlasov-Poisson system. Via a pseudo-conformal inversion we recast the question of asymptotic behavior in terms of local in time dynamics of a new equation with singular coefficients which is approximately integrated using a generating function.

On the stabilizing effect of rotation in the 3d Euler equations

While it is well known that constant rotation induces linear dispersive effects in various fluid models, we study here its effect on long time nonlinear dynamics in the inviscid setting. More precisely, we investigate stability in the 3d rotating Euler equations in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with a fixed speed of rotation. We show that for any $M>0$, axisymmetric initial data of sufficiently small size $\varepsilon$ lead to solutions that exist for a long time at least $\varepsilon^{-M}$ and disperse. This is a manifestation of the stabilizing effect of rotation, regardless of its speed. To achieve this we develop an anisotropic framework that naturally builds on the available symmetries. This allows for a precise quantification and control of the geometry of nonlinear interactions, while at the same time giving enough information to obtain dispersive decay via adapted linear dispersive estimates.

Stability of a point charge for the Vlasov-Poisson system: the radial case

We consider the Vlasov-Poisson system with initial data a small, radial, absolutely continuous perturbation of a point charge. We show that the solution is global and disperses to infinity via a modified scattering along trajectories of the linearized flow. This is done by an exact integration of the linearized equation, followed by the analysis of the perturbed Hamiltonian equation in action-angle coordinates.
