Constructive Krein-Rutman result for Kinetic Fokker-Planck equations in a domain

We consider a general Kinetic Fokker-Planck (KFP) equation in a domain with Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary, not necessarily with conservation of mass. We establish the wellposedness in many spaces including Radon measures spaces, and in particular the existence and uniqueness of fundamental solutions. We also establish a Krein-Rutman theorem with constructive rate of convergence in an abstract setting that we use for proving that the solutions to the KFP equation converge toward the conveniently normalized first eigenfunction. Both results use the ultracontractivity of the associated semigroup in a fundamental way.

The Kinetic Fokker-Planck equation in a domain: Ultracontractivity, hypocoercivity and long-time asymptotic behavior

We consider the Kinetic Fokker-Planck (FKP) equation in a domain with Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary. We establish the ultracontractivity of the associated semigroup and the hypocoercivity of the associated operator. We deduce the convergence with constructive rate of the solution to the KFP equation towards the stationary state with same mass as the initial datum.

The Navier-Stokes limit of kinetic equations for low regularity data

In this paper, we investigate the link between kinetic equations (including Boltzmann with or without cutoff assumption and Landau equations) and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. We work with strong solutions and we treat all the cases in a unified framework. The main purpose of this work is to be as accurate as possible in terms of functional spaces. More precisely, it is well-known that the Navier-Stokes equation can be solved in a lower regularity setting (in the space variable) than kinetic equations. Our main result allows to get a rigorous link between solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation with such low regularity data and kinetic equations.

On the self-similar stability of the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel equation

We consider the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel equation in the plane and prove the nonlinear exponential stability of the self-similar profile in a quasi parabolic-elliptic regime. We first perform a perturbation argument in order to obtain exponential stability for the semigroup associated to part of the first component of the linearized operator, by exploiting the exponential stability of the linearized operator for the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel equation. We finally employ a purely semigroup analysis to prove linear, and then nonlinear, exponential stability of the system in appropriated functional spaces.

The Landau equation in a domain

This work deals with the Landau equation in a bounded domain with the Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary for any (possibly smoothly position dependent) accommodation coefficient and for the full range of interaction potentials, including the Coulomb case. We establish the global existence and a constructive asymptotic decay of solutions in a close-to-equilibrium regime. This is the first existence result for a Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary and that generalizes the similar results established for the Landau equation for other geometries in \cite{GuoLandau1,GS1,GS2,MR3625186,MR4076068}. We also answer to Villani's program \cite{MR2116276,MR2407976} about constructive accurate rate of convergence to the equilibrium {(quantitative H-Theorem)} for solutions to collisional kinetic equations satisfying a priori uniform bounds. The proofs rely on the study of a suitably linear problem for which we prove that the associated operator is hypocoercive, the associated semigroup is ultracontractive, and finally that it is asymptotically stable in many weighted $L^\infty$ spaces.

Special macroscopic modes and hypocoercivity

We study linear inhomogeneous kinetic equations with an external confining potential and a collision operator admitting several local conservation laws (local density, momentum and energy). We classify all special macroscopic modes (stationary solutions and time-periodic solutions). We also prove the convergence of all solutions of the evolution equation to such non-trivial modes, with a quantitative exponential rate. This is the first hypocoercivity result with multiple special macroscopic modes with constructive estimates depending on the geometry of the potential.

Hydrodynamic limit for the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation

This work deals with the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation for all type of potentials, in both the torus $\mathbf{T}^3$ and in the whole space $\mathbf{R}^3$, under the incompressible Navier-Stokes scaling. We first establish the well-posedness and decay of global mild solutions to this rescaled Boltzmann equation in a perturbative framework, that is for solutions close to the Maxwellian, obtaining in particular integrated-in-time regularization estimates. We then combine these estimates with spectral-type estimates in order to obtain the strong convergence of solutions to the non-cutoff Boltzmannn equation towards the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system.

Non-cutoff Boltzmann equation with soft potentials in the whole space

We prove the existence and uniqueness of global solutions to the Boltzmann equation with non-cutoff soft potentials in the whole space when the initial data is a small perturbation of a Maxwellian with polynomial decay in velocity. Our method is based in the decomposition of the desired solution into two parts: one with polynomial decay in velocity satisfying the Boltzmann equation with only a dissipative part of the linearized operator ; the other with Gaussian decay in velocity verifying the Boltzmann equation with a coupling term.

Large-time behavior of compressible polytropic fluids and nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation

In this paper we analyze the large-time behavior of weak solutions to polytropic fluid models possibly including quantum and capillary effects. Formal a priori estimates show that the density of solutions to these systems should disperse with time. Scaling appropriately the system, we prove that, under a reasonable assumption on the decay of energy, the density of weak solutions converges in large times to an unknown profile. In contrast with the isothermal case, we also show that there exists a large variety of asymptotic profiles. We complement the study by providing existence of global-in-time weak solutions satisfying the required decay of energy. As a byproduct of our method, we also obtain results concerning the large-time behavior of solutions to nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation, allowing the presence of a semi-classical parameter as well as long range nonlinearities.

Regularization estimates and hydrodynamical limit for the Landau equation

In this paper, we study the Landau equation under the Navier-Stokes scaling in the torus for hard and moderately soft potentials. More precisely, we investigate the Cauchy theory in a perturbative framework and establish some new short time regularization estimates for our rescaled nonlinear Landau equation. These estimates are quantified in time and optimal, indeed, we obtain the instantaneous expected anisotropic gain of regularity (see [53] for the corresponding hypoelliptic estimates on the linearized Landau collision operator). Moreover, the estimates giving the gain of regularity in the velocity variable are uniform in the Knudsen number. Intertwining these new estimates on the Landau equation with estimates on the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system, we are then able to obtain a result of strong convergence towards this fluid system.

Global weak solutions for quantum isothermal fluids

We construct global weak solutions to isothermal quantum Navier-Stokes equations, with or without Korteweg term, in the whole space of dimension at most three. Instead of working on the initial set of unknown functions, we consider an equivalent reformulation, based on a time-dependent rescaling, that we introduced in a previous paper to study the large time behavior, and which provides suitable a priori estimates, as opposed to the initial formulation where the potential energy is not signed. We proceed by working on tori whose size eventually becomes infinite. On each fixed torus, we consider the equations in the presence of drag force terms. Such equations are solved by regularization, and the limit where the drag force terms vanish is treated by resuming the notion of renormalized solution developed by I. Lacroix-Violet and A. Vasseur. We also establish global existence of weak solutions for the isothermal Korteweg equation (no viscosity), when initial data are well-prepared, in the sense that they stem from a Madelung transform.

Hypocoercivity for kinetic linear equations in bounded domains with general Maxwell boundary condition

We establish the convergence to the equilibrium for various linear collisional kinetic equations (including linearized Boltzmann and Landau equations) with physical local conservation laws in bounded domains with general Maxwell boundary condition. Our proof consists in establishing an hypocoercivity result for the associated operator, in other words, we exhibit a convenient Hilbert norm for which the associated operator is coercive in the orthogonal of the global conservation laws. Our approach allows us to treat general domains with all type of boundary conditions in a unified framework. In particular, our result includes the case of vanishing accommodation coefficient and thus the specific case of the specular reflection boundary condition.

Weighted Korn and Poincaré-Korn inequalities in the Euclidean space and associated operators

We prove functional inequalities on vector fields on the Euclidean space when it is equipped with a bounded measure that satisfies a Poincaré inequality, and study associated self-adjoint operators. The weighted Korn inequality compares the differential matrix, once projected orthogonally to certain finite-dimensional spaces, with its symmetric part and, in an improved form of the inequality, an additional term. We also consider Poincaré-Korn inequalities for estimating a projection of the vector field by the symmetric part of the differential matrix and zeroth-order versions of these inequalities obtained using the Witten-Laplace operator. The constants depend on geometric properties of the potential and the estimates are quantitative and constructive. These inequalities are motivated by kinetic theory and related with the Korn inequality (1906) in mechanics, on a bounded domain.

On the derivation of a Stokes-Brinkman problem from Stokes equations around a random array of moving spheres

We consider the Stokes system in $\mathbb R^3,$ deprived of $N$ spheres of radius $1/N,$ completed by constant boundary conditions on the spheres. This problem models the instantaneous response of a viscous fluid to an immersed cloud of moving solid spheres. We assume that the centers of the spheres and the boundary conditions are given randomly and we compute the asymptotic behavior of solutions when the parameter $N$ diverges. Under the assumption that the distribution of spheres/centers is chaotic, we prove convergence in mean to the solution of a Stokes-Brinkman problem.

Rigidity results in generalized isothermal fluids

We investigate the long-time behavior of solutions to the isothermal Euler, Korteweg or quantum Navier Stokes equations, as well as generalizations of these equations where the convex pressure law is asymptotically linear near vacuum. By writing the system with a suitable time-dependent scaling we prove that the densities of global solutions display universal dispersion rate and asymptotic profile. This result applies to weak solutions defined in an appropriate way. In the exactly isothermal case, we establish the compactness of bounded sets of such weak solutions, by introducing modified entropies adapted to the new unknown functions.

Landau equation for very soft and Coulomb potentials near Maxwellians

This work deals with the Landau equation for very soft and Coulomb potentials near the associated Maxwellian equilibrium. We first investigate the corresponding linearized operator and develop a method to prove stability estimates of its associated semigroup in large functional spaces. We then deduce existence, uniqueness and fast decay of the solutions to the nonlinear equation in a close-to-equilibrium framework. Our result drastically improves the set of initial data compared to the one considered by Guo and Strain who established similar results in [21, 37, 38]. Our functional framework is compatible with the non perturbative frameworks developed by Villani, Desvillettes and co-authors [42, 17, 16, 13], and our main result then makes possible to improve the speed of convergence to the equilibrium established therein.

Uniqueness and long time asymptotics for the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel equation

The present paper deals with the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel equation in the plane inthe general framework of weak (or "free energy") solutions associated to an initial datum with finite mass $M\textless{} 8π$, finite second log-moment and finite entropy. The aim of the paper is twofold:(1) We prove the uniqueness of the "free energy" solution. The proof uses a DiPerna-Lions renormalizing argument which makes possible to get the "optimal regularity" as well as an estimate of the difference of two possible solutions in the critical $L^{4/3}$ Lebesgue norm similarly as for the $2d$ vorticity Navier-Stokes equation. (2) We prove a radially symmetric and polynomial weighted $L^2$ exponential stability of the self-similar profile in the quasi parabolic-elliptic regime. The proof is based on a perturbation argument which takes advantage of the exponential stability of the self-similar profile for the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel equation established by Campos-Dolbeault and Egana-Mischler.

Cauchy problem and exponential stability for the inhomogeneous Landau equation

This work deals with the inhomogeneous Landau equation on the torus in the cases of hard, maxwellian and moderately soft potentials. We first investigate the linearized equation and we prove exponential decay estimates for the associated semigroup. We then turn to the nonlinear equation and we use the linearized semigroup decay in order to construct solutions in a close-to-equilibrium setting. Finally, we prove a exponential stability for such a solution, with a rate as close as we want to the optimal rate given by the semigroup decay.
