Fixed points for group actions on 2-dimensional affine buildings

We prove a local-to-global result for fixed points of groups acting on affine buildings (possibly non-discrete) of types $\tilde{A}_2$ or $\tilde{C}_2$. In the discrete case, our theorem establishes the corresponding special cases of a conjecture by Marquis.

The triangle groups (2,4,5) and (2,5,5) are not systolic

In this paper we provide new examples of hyperbolic but nonsystolic groups by showing that the triangle groups $(2,4,5)$ and $(2,5,5)$ are not systolic. Along the way we prove some results about subsets of systolic complexes stable under involutions.

Universal groups for right-angled buildings

In 2000, M. Burger and S. Mozes introduced universal groups acting on trees with a prescribed local action. We generalize this concept to groups acting on right-angled buildings. When the right-angled building is thick and irreducible of rank at least 2 and each of the local permutation groups is transitive and generated by its point stabilizers, we show that the corresponding universal group is a simple group. When the building is locally finite, these universal groups are compactly generated totally disconnected locally compact groups, and we describe the structure of the maximal compact open subgroups of the universal groups as a limit of generalized wreath products.

On exceptional compact homogeneous geometries of type C3

We provide a uniform framework to study the exceptional homogeneous compact geometries of type C3. This framework is then used to show that these are simply connected, answering a question by Kramer and Lytchak, and to calculate the full automorphism groups.

Free constructions of geometries of Coxeter type

We establish two free constructions of geometries of Coxeter type. The first construction deals with any Coxeter diagram having no subdiagram of type A_3, the second one with diagrams of type C_n and H_4.

Rigidity at infinity of trees and Euclidean buildings

We show that if a group G acts isometrically on a locally finite leafless R-tree inducing a two-transitive action on its ends, then this tree is determined by the action of G on the boundary. As a corollary we obtain that locally finite Euclidean buildings without tree or cone factors are determined by their complete building at infinity.

Severi's theorem for d-uple Veronese varieties

We characterize $d$-uple Veronese embeddings of finite-dimensional projective spaces. The easiest non-trivial instance of our theorem is the embedding of the projective plane in 5-dimensional projective space, a result obtained in 1901 by Severi when the underlying field is complex.

Coarse Equivalences of Euclidean Buildings

We prove the following rigidity results. Coarse equivalences between Euclidean buildings preserve spherical buildings at infinity. If all irreducible factors have dimension at least two, then coarsely equivalent Euclidean buildings are isometric (up to scaling factors). If in addition none of the irreducible factors is a Euclidean cone, then the isometry is unique and has finite distance from the coarse equivalence.

On axiomatic definitions of non-discrete affine buildings

In this paper we prove equivalence of sets of axioms for non-discrete affine buildings, by providing different types of metric, exchange and atlas conditions. We apply our result to show that the definition of a Euclidean building depends only on the topological equivalence class of the metric on the model space. The sharpness of the axioms dealing with metric conditions is illustrated in an appendix. There it is shown that a space X defined over a model space with metric d is possibly a building only if the induced distance function on X satisfies the triangle inequality.

Epimorphisms of pseudo-quadratic polar spaces

We classify the epimorphisms of the buildings ${BC}_l(K,K_0,σ,L, q_0)$, where l is at least two, of pseudo-quadratic form type. This completes the classification of epimorphisms of irreducible spherical Moufang buildings of rank at least two.

Descent of affine buildings - I. Large minimal angles

In this two-part paper we prove an existence result for affine buildings arising from exceptional algebraic reductive groups. Combined with earlier results on classical groups, this gives a complete and positive answer to the conjecture concerning the existence of affine buildings arising from such groups defined over a (skew) field with a complete valuation, as proposed by Jacques Tits. This first part lays the foundations for our approach and deals with the `large minimal angle' case.

Descent of affine buildings - II. Minimal angle π/3 and exceptional quadrangles

In this two-part paper we prove an existence result for affine buildings arising from exceptional algebraic reductive groups. Combined with earlier results on classical groups, this gives a complete and positive answer to the conjecture concerning the existence of affine buildings arising from such groups defined over a (skew) field with a complete valuation, as proposed by Jacques Tits. This second part builds upon the results of the first part and deals with the remaining cases.

On epimorphisms of spherical Moufang buildings

In this paper we classify the the epimorphisms of irreducible spherical Moufang buildings (of rank at least 2) defined over a field. As an application we characterize indecomposable epimorphisms of these buildings as those epimorphisms arising from R-buildings.

Λ-buildings and base change functors

We prove an analog of the base change functor of Λ-trees in the setting of generalized affine buildings. The proof is mainly based on local and global combinatorics of the associated spherical buildings. As an application we obtain that the class of generalized affine building is closed under ultracones and asymptotic cones. Other applications involve a complex of groups decompositions and fixed point theorems for certain classes of generalized affine buildings.

On metrically complete Bruhat-Tits buildings

Metrical completeness for Bruhat-Tits buildings is a natural and useful condition. In this paper we determine which Bruhat-Tits buildings are metrically complete up to certain cases involving infinite-dimensionality and residue characteristic two.

Quadrangles embedded in metasymplectic spaces

During the final steps in the classification of the Moufang quadrangles by Jacques Tits and Richard Weiss a new class of Moufang quadrangles unexpectedly turned up. Subsequently Bernhard Muhlherr and Hendrik Van Maldeghem showed that this class arises as the fixed points and hyperlines of certain involutions of a metasymplectic space (or equivalently a building of type F_4). In the same paper they also showed that other types of Moufang quadrangles can be embedded in a metasymplectic space as points and hyperlines. In this paper, we reverse the question: given a (thick) quadrangle embedded in a metasymplectic space as points and hyperlines, when is such a quadrangle a Moufang quadrangle?

Generalized polygons with non-discrete valuation defined by two-dimensional affine R-buildings

In this paper, we show that the building at infinity of a two-dimensional affine R-building is a generalized polygon endowed with a valuation satisfying some specific axioms. Specializing to the discrete case of affine buildings, this solves part of a long standing conjecture about affine buildings of type G~_2, and it reproves the results obtained mainly by the second author for types A~_2 and C~_2. The techniques are completely different from the ones employed in the discrete case, but they are considerably shorter, and general (i.e., independent of the type of the two-dimensional R-building).
