A Relativistic Formula for the Multiple Scattering of Photons

We have discovered analytical expressions for the probability density function (PDF) of photons that are multiply scattered in relativistic flows, under the assumption of isotropic and inelastic scattering. These expressions characterize the collective dynamics of these photons, ranging from free-streaming to diffusion regions. The PDF, defined within the light cone to ensure the preservation of causality, is expressed in a three-dimensional space at a constant time surface. This expression is achieved by summing the PDFs of photons that have been scattered $n$ times within four-dimensional spacetime. We have confirmed that this formulation accurately reproduces the results of relativistic Monte Carlo simulations. We found that the PDF in three-dimensional space at a constant time surface can be represented in a separable variable form. We demonstrate the behavior of the PDF in the laboratory frame across a wide range of Lorentz factors for the relativistic flow. When the Lorentz factor of the fluid is low, the behavior of scattered photons evolves sequentially from free propagation to diffusion, and then to dynamic diffusion, where the mean effective velocity of the photons equates to that of the fluid. On the other hand, when the Lorentz factor is large, the behavior evolves from anisotropic ballistic motion, characterized by a mean effective velocity approaching the speed of light, to dynamic diffusion.

Peculiarity of Symmetric Ring Systems with Double Y-Junctions and the magnetic effects

We discuss quantum dynamics in the ring systems with double Y-junctions in which two arms have same length. The node of a Y-junction can be parametrized by U(3). Considering mathematically permitted junction conditions seriously, we formulate such systems by scattering matrices. We show that the symmetric ring systems, which consist of two nodes with the same parameters under the reflection symmetry, have remarkable aspects that there exist localized states inevitably, and resonant perfect transmission occurs when the wavenumber of an incoming wave coincides with that of the localized states, for any parameters of the nodes except for the extremal cases in which the absolute values of components of scattering matrices take $1$. We also investigate the magnetic disturbance to the symmetric ring systems.

Quantum Reflection and Transmission in Ring Systems with Double Y-Junctions: Occurrence of Perfect Reflection

We consider the scattering problems of a quantum particle in a system with a single Y-junction and in ring systems with double Y-junctions. We provide new formalism for such quantum mechanical problems. Based on a path integral approach, we find compact formulas for probability amplitudes in the ring systems. We also discuss quantum reflection and transmission in the ring systems under scale-invariant junction conditions. It is remarkable that perfect reflection can occur in an anti-symmetric ring system, in contrast with the one-dimensional quantum systems having singular nodes of degree 2.

Resonant Transmission in One-Dimensional Quantum Mechanics with Two Independent Point Interactions: Full Parameter Analysis

We discuss the scattering of a quantum particle by two independent successive point interactions in one dimension. The parameter space for two point interactions is given by $U(2)\times U(2)$, which is described by eight real parameters. We perform an analysis of perfect resonant transmission on the whole parameter space. By investigating the effects of the two point interactions on the scattering matrix of plane wave, we find the condition under which perfect resonant transmission occurs. We also provide the physical interpretation of the resonance condition.

Effects of Two Successive Parity-Invariant Point Interactions on One-Dimensional Quantum Transmission: Resonance Conditions for the Parameter Space

We consider the scattering of a quantum particle by two independent, successive parity-invariant point interactions in one dimension. The parameter space for the two point interactions is given by the direct product of two tori, which is described by four parameters. By investigating the effects of the two point interactions on the transmission probability of plane wave, we obtain the conditions for the parameter space under which perfect resonant transmission occur. The resonance conditions are found to be described by symmetric and anti-symmetric relations between the parameters.

Scalar field excited around a rapidly rotating black hole in Chern-Simons modified gravity

We discuss a Chern-Simons (CS) scalar field around a rapidly rotating black hole in dynamical CS modified gravity. The CS correction can be obtained perturbatively by considering the Kerr spacetime to be the background. We obtain the CS scalar field solution around the black hole analytically and numerically, assuming a stationary and axisymmetric configuration. The scalar field diverges on the inner horizon when we impose the boundary condition that the scalar field is regular on the outer horizon and vanishes at infinity. Therefore, the CS scalar field becomes problematic on the inner horizon.

Spacetime rotation-induced Landau quantization

We investigate non-inertial and gravitational effects on quantum states in electromagnetic fields and present the analytic solution for energy eigenstates for the Schrödinger equation including non-inertial, gravitational and electromagnetic effects. We find that in addition to the Landau quantization the rotation of spacetime itself leads to the additional quantization, and that the energy levels for an electron are different from those for a proton at the level of gravitational corrections.

Effects of Chern-Simons Corrections on Conserved Quantities of Relativistic Fluid

We consider relativistic fluid flow under Chern-Simons modified Maxwell theory and under Chern-Simons modified gravity theory. We take account of the effects of Chern-Simons corrections on the quantities of fluid flow that are conserved without the Chern-Simons corrections. We find that the conservations of several quantities are generally broken by the Chern-Simons corrections.

Rotating black hole in extended Chern-Simons modified gravity

We investigate a slowly rotating black hole in four-dimensional extended Chern-Simons modified gravity. We obtain an approximate solution that reduces to the Kerr solution when a coupling constant vanishes. The Chern-Simons correction effectively reduces the frame-dragging effect around a black hole in comparison with that of the Kerr solution.

Flat rotation curves in Chern-Simons modified gravity

We investigate the spacetime of a slowly rotating black hole in the Chern-Simons modified gravity. The long range feature of frame-dragging effect under the Chern-Simon gravity well explains the flat rotation curves of galaxies which is a central evidence of dark matter. Our solution provides a different scenario of rotating space from Goedel's solution.

Does a black hole rotate in Chern-Simons modified gravity?

Rotating black hole solutions in the (3+1)-dimensional Chern-Simons modified gravity theory are discussed by taking account of perturbation around the Schwarzschild solution. The zenith-angle dependence of a metric function related to the frame-dragging effect is determined from a constraint equation independently of a choice of the embedding coordinate. We find that at least within the framework of the first-order perturbation method, the black hole cannot rotate for finite black hole mass if the embedding coordinate is taken to be a timelike vector. However, the rotation can be permitted in the limit of $M/r \to 0$ (where $M$ is the black hole mass and $r$ is the radius). For a spacelike vector, the rotation can also be permitted for any value of the black hole mass.

The effect of dissipation on quantum transmission resonance

Quantum transmissions of a free particle passing through a rectangular potential barrier with dissipation are studied using a path decomposition technique. Dissipative processes strongly suppress the transmission probability at resonance just above the barrier resulting in an unexpected reduction of the mean traversal time through the potential barrier.

General Relativistic Effects of Gravity in Quantum Mechanics -- A Case of Ultra-Relativistic, Spin 1/2 Particles --

We present a general relativistic framework for studying gravitational effects in quantum mechanical phenomena. We concentrate our attention on the case of ultra-relativistic, spin-1/2 particles propagating in Kerr spacetime. The two-component Weyl equation with general relativistic corrections is obtained in the case of a slowly rotating, weak gravitational field. Our approach is also applied to neutrino oscillations in the presence of a gravitational field. The relative phase of two different mass eigenstates is calculated in radial propagation, and the result is compared with those of previous works.

General Relativistic Modification of a Pulsar Electromagnetic Field

We consider an exterior electromagnetic field surrounding a rotating star endowed with a dipole magnetic field in the context of general relativity. The analytic solution for a stationary configuration is obtained, and the general relativistic modifications and the implications for pulsar radiation are investigated in detail. We find that the general relativistic corrections of both the electric field strength and the curvature radii of magnetic field lines tend to enhance the curvature radiation photon energy.

Asymmetry in Microlensing-Induced Light Curves

We discuss distortion in microlensing-induced light curves which are considered to be curves due to single-point-mass lenses at a first glance. As factors of the distortion, we consider close binary and planetary systems, which are the limiting cases of two-point-mass lenses, and the gravitational potential is regarded as the sum of the single point mass and the corrections. In order to quantitatively estimate the asymmetric features of such distorted light curves, we propose a cutoff dependent skewness, and show how to discriminate the similar light curves with it. We also examine as the distortion the general relativistic effect of frame dragging, but the effect coincides with the close binary case in the light curves.
