Gyrohydrodynamics: Relativistic spinful fluid with strong vorticity

We develop a relativistic (quasi-)hydrodynamic framework, dubbed the gyrohydrodynamics, to describe fluid dynamics of many-body systems with spin under strong vorticity based on entropy-current analysis. This framework generalizes the recently-developed spin hydrodynamics to the regime where the spin density is at the leading order in derivatives but suppressed by another small parameter, the Planck constant $\hbar$, due to its quantum nature. Our analysis shows that the complete first-order constitutive relations of gyrohydrodynamics involve seventeen transport coefficients and are highly anisotropic.

Revisiting relativistic magnetohydrodynamics from quantum electrodynamics

We provide a statistical mechanical derivation of relativistic magnetohydrodynamics on the basis of the $(3+1)$-dimensional quantum electrodynamics; the system endowed with the magnetic one-form symmetry. The conservation laws and the constitutive relations are presented in a manifestly covariant way with respect to the general coordinate transformation. The method of the local Gibbs ensemble (or nonequilibrium statistical operator) combined with the path-integral formula for the thermodynamic functional enables us to obtain an exact form of the constitutive relations. Applying the derivative expansion to the exact formula, we derive the first-order constitutive relations for the relativistic magnetohydrodynamics. The result for the QED plasma preserving the parity and charge-conjugation symmetries is equipped with two electrical resistivities and five (three bulk and two shear) viscosities. We also show that those transport coefficients satisfy the Onsager's reciprocal relation and a set of inequalities, indicating the semi-positivity of the entropy production rate consistent with the local second law of thermodynamics.

Wigner functions and quantum kinetic theory of polarized photons

We derive the Wigner functions of polarized photons in the Coulomb gauge with the $\hbar$ expansion applied to quantum field theory, and identify side-jump effects for massless photons. We also discuss the photonic chiral vortical effect for the Chern-Simons current and zilch vortical effect for the zilch current in local thermal equilibrium as a consistency check for our formalism. The results are found to be in agreement with those obtained from different approaches. Moreover, using the real-time formalism, we construct the quantum kinetic theory (QKT) for polarized photons. By further adopting a specific power counting scheme for the distribution functions, we provide a more succinct form of an effective QKT. This photonic QKT involves quantum corrections associated with self-energy gradients in the collision term, which are analogous to the side-jump corrections pertinent to spin-orbit interactions in the chiral kinetic theory for massless fermions. The same theoretical framework can also be directly applied to weakly coupled gluons in the absence of background color fields.

Di-lepton production from a single photon in strong magnetic fields: Vacuum dichroism

We study di-lepton production from a single photon in the presence of a strong constant magnetic field. By the use of the Ritus-basis formalism, we analytically evaluate the photon--to--di-lepton conversion vertex with fully taking into account the non-perturbative interactions between the produced fermions and the strong magnetic field. We show that the di-lepton spectrum becomes anisotropic with respect to the magnetic-field direction and depends on the photon polarization as a manifestation of the vacuum dichroism in a strong magnetic field. According to the energy conservation in the presence of the Landau quantization, not only the transverse momentum of the produced fermions but also the longitudinal momentum is discretized, and the di-lepton spectrum exhibits spike structures as functions of the incident photon energy and the magnetic field strength. We also show that the di-lepton production is strictly prohibited for massless fermions in the lowest Landau levels as an analogue of the so-called helicity suppression.

Effective quantum kinetic theory for spin transport of fermions with collsional effects

We systematically derive the collision term for the axial kinetic theory, a quantum kinetic theory delineating the coupled dynamics of the vector/axial charges and spin transport carried by the massive spin-1/2 fermions traversing a medium. We employ the Wigner-function approach and propose a consistent power-counting scheme where the axial-charge distribution function, a non-conserved quantity for massive particles, is accounted as the first-order quantity in the $ \hbar $ expansion, while the vector-charge distribution function the zeroth-order quantity. This specific power-counting scheme allows us to organize a reduced $ \hbar$ expansion for the collision term and to formally identity the spin-diffusion effect and the spin-polarization effect at the same order. We confirm that the obtained collisional axial kinetic theory smoothly reduces to the chiral kinetic theory in the massless limit, serving as a consistency check. In the absence of electromagnetic fields, we further present the simplified axial kinetic equations suitable for tracking dynamical spin polarization of heavy and light fermions, respectively. As an application to the weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma at high temperature, we compute the spin-diffusion term for massive quarks within the leading-log approximation. The formal expression for the first-order terms provides a path toward evaluation of the spin polarization effect in quantum chromodynamics.

Signatures of the vortical quark-gluon plasma in hadron yields

We investigate the hadron production from the vortical quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions. Based on the quark-coalescence and statistical hadronization models, we show that total hadron yields summed over the spin components are enhanced by the local vorticity with quadratic dependence. The enhancement factor amounts to be a few percent and may be detectable within current experimental sensitivities. We also show that the effect is stronger for hadrons with larger spin, and thus propose a new signature of the local vorticity, which may be detected by the yield ratio of distinct hadron species having different spins such as $ϕ$ and $η'$. The vorticity dependence of hadron yields seems robust, with consistent predictions in both of the hadron production mechanisms for reasonable values of the vorticity strength estimated for heavy-ion collisions.

Note on all-order Landau-level structures of the Heisenberg-Euler effective actions for QED and QCD

We investigate the Landau-level structures encoded in the famous Heisenberg-Euler (HE) effective action in constant electromagnetic fields. We first discuss the HE effective actions for scalar and spinor QED, and then extend it to the QCD analogue in the covariantly constant chromo-electromagnetic fields. We identify all the Landau levels and the Zeeman energies starting out from the proper-time representations at the one-loop order, and derive the vacuum persistence probability for the Schwinger mechanism in the summation form over independent contributions of the all-order Landau levels. We find an enhancement of the Schwinger mechanism catalyzed by a magnetic field for spinor QED and, in contrast, a stronger exponential suppression for scalar QED due to the "zero-point energy" of the Landau quantization. For QCD, we identify the discretized energy levels of the transverse and longitudinal gluon modes on the basis of their distinct Zeeman energies, and explicitly confirm the cancellation between the longitudinal-gluon and ghost contributions in the Schwinger mechanism. We also discuss the unstable ground state of the perturbative gluon excitations known as the Nielsen-Olesen instability.

MagnetoHydrodynamics with chiral anomaly: phases of collective excitations and instabilities

We study the relativistic hydrodynamics with chiral anomaly and dynamical electromagnetic fields, namely Chiral MagnetoHydroDynamics (CMHD). We formulate CMHD as a low-energy effective theory based on a generalized derivative expansion. We demonstrate that the modification of ordinary MagnetoHydroDynamics (MHD) due to chiral anomaly can be obtained from the second law of thermodynamics and is tied to chiral magnetic effect. We further study the real-time properties of chiral fluid by solving linearized CMHD equations. We discover a remarkable "transition" at an intermediate axial chemical potential $μ_{A}$ between a stable Chiral fluid at low $μ_{A}$ and an unstable Chiral fluid at large $μ_{A}$. We summarize this transition in a "phase diagram" in terms of $μ_{A}$ and the angle of the wavevector relative to the magnetic field. In the unstable regime, there are four collective modes carrying both magnetic and fluid helicity, in contrary to MHD waves which are unpolarized. The half of the helical modes grow exponentially in time, indicating the instability, while the other half become dissipative.

Axial Kinetic Theory and Spin Transport for Fermions with Arbitrary Mass

We derive the quantum kinetic theory for fermions with arbitrary mass in a background electromagnetic field from the Wigner-function approach. Since spin of massive fermions is a dynamical degree of freedom, the kinetic equations with the leading-order quantum corrections describe entangled dynamics of not only the vector- and axial-charge distributions but also of the spin polarization. Therefore, we obtain one scalar and one axial-vector kinetic equations with magnetization currents pertinent to the spin-orbit interaction. We show that our results smoothly reduce to the massless limit where the spin of massless fermions is no longer an independent dynamical degree of freedom but is enslaved by the chirality and momentum and the accordingly kinetic equations turn into the chiral kinetic theory for Weyl fermions. We provide a kinetic theory covering both the massive and massless cases, and hence resolves the problem in constructing the bridge between them. Such generalization may be crucial for applications to various physical systems. Based on our kinetic equations, we discuss the anomalous currents transported by massive fermions in thermal equilibrium.

Fate of spin polarization in a relativistic fluid: An entropy-current analysis

We derive relativistic hydrodynamic equations with a dynamical spin degree of freedom on the basis of an entropy-current analysis. The first and second laws of local thermodynamics constrain possible structures of the constitutive relations including a spin current and the antisymmetric part of the (canonical) energy-momentum tensor. Solving the obtained hydrodynamic equations within the linear-mode analysis, we find spin-diffusion modes, indicating that spin density is damped out after a characteristic time scale controlled by transport coefficients introduced in the antisymmetric part of the energy-momentum tensor in the entropy-current analysis. This is a consequence of mutual convertibility between spin and orbital angular momentum.

Emergent QCD Kondo effect in two-flavor color superconducting phase

We show that effective coupling strengths between ungapped and gapped quarks in the two-flavor color superconducting (2SC) phase are renormalized by logarithmic quantum corrections. We obtain a set of coupled renormalization-group (RG) equations for two distinct effective coupling strengths arising from gluon exchanges carrying different color charges. The diagram of RG flow suggests that both of the coupling strengths evolve into a strong-coupling regime as we decrease the energy scale toward the Fermi surface. This is a characteristic behavior observed in the Kondo effect, which has been known to occur in the presence of impurity scatterings via non-Abelian interactions. We propose a novel Kondo effect emerging without doped impurities, but with the gapped quasiexcitations and the residual SU(2) color subgroup intrinsic in the 2SC phase, which we call the 2SC Kondo effect.

Meson deformation by magnetic fields in lattice QCD

We study light meson properties in a magnetic field, focusing on a charged pion and a charged and polarized rho meson, in quenched lattice QCD. The gauge-invariant density-density correlators are calculated to investigate the deformation caused by the magnetic field. We find that these mesons acquire elongated shapes along the magnetic field. The magnitude of the deformation is about 10-20 % when the strength of the magnetic field is of the order of the squared unphysical pion mass.

Gluon Spectrum in Quark-Gluon Plasma under Strong Magnetic Fields

We obtain the general expression of the gluon propagator at finite temperature ($T$) and in a magnetic field ($B$), for the case that the four transverse tensor structures appear in the gluon self-energy. By using this expression and a specific form of the one-loop gluon self-energy in the lowest Landau level approximation, we analyze the gluon spectrum in the strong magnetic field limit. As a result, we find that there exist two collective excitations of which the energies are of the order of $p\sim gT$ with $g$ being the coupling constant. One of the two excitations enjoys properties quite different from those of the collective excitations at $B=0$ which have been discussed by using the hard thermal loop approximation. We also discuss the static and dynamical screening effects, which are expected to be important for computation of transport coefficients in strong magnetic fields.

Anatomy of the magnetic catalysis by renormalization-group method

We first examine the scaling argument for a renormalization-group (RG) analysis applied to a system subject to the dimensional reduction in strong magnetic fields, and discuss the fact that a four-Fermi operator of the low-energy excitations is marginal irrespective of the strength of the coupling constant in underlying theories. We then construct a scale-dependent effective four-Fermi interaction as a result of screened photon exchanges at weak coupling, and establish the RG method appropriately including the screening effect, in which the RG evolution from ultraviolet to infrared scales is separated into two stages by the screening-mass scale. Based on a precise agreement between the dynamical mass gaps obtained from the solutions of the RG and Schwinger-Dyson equations, we discuss an equivalence between these two approaches. Focusing on QED and Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, we clarify how the properties of the interactions manifest themselves in the mass gap, and point out an importance of respecting the intrinsic energy-scale dependences in underlying theories for the determination of the mass gap. These studies are expected to be useful for a diagnosis of the magnetic catalysis in QCD.

Bulk Viscosity of Quark-Gluon Plasma in Strong Magnetic Fields

We investigate the viscosities of the quark-gluon plasma in strong magnetic fields within the leading-log and lowest Landau level (LLL) approximations. We first show that the bulk viscosity in the direction parallel to the magnetic field is the only component that has a contribution from the quarks occupying the LLL. We then compute the bulk viscosity from the Kubo formula and find an intriguing quark-mass dependence as a consequence of a competition between the suppression of the bulk viscosity by conformal symmetry and an enhancement of the mean-free path by chirality conservation, which governs the behavior in the massless limit. The quark contribution to the viscosity along the magnetic field becomes larger than the one in the absence of a magnetic field. We also briefly estimate the other transport coefficients by considering the contribution of gluons. We show that the shear viscosities are suppressed compared to their values in the absence of a magnetic field.

Charge redistribution from novel magneto-vorticity coupling in anomalous hydrodynamics

We discuss new transport phenomena in the presence of both a strong magnetic field and a vortex field. Their interplay induces a charge distribution and a current along the magnetic field. We show that the associated transport coefficients can be obtained from a simple analysis of the single-particle distribution functions and also from the Kubo formula calculation. The consistent results from these analyses suggest that the transport coefficients are tied to the chiral anomaly in the (1+1) dimension because of the dimensional reduction in the lowest Landau levels.

Longitudinal Conductivity in Strong Magnetic Field in Perturbative QCD: Complete Leading Order

We compute the longitudinal electrical conductivity in the presence of strong background magnetic field in complete leading order of perturbative QCD, based on the assumed hierarchy of scales $α_s eB\ll (m_q^2,T^2)\ll eB$. We formulate an effective kinetic theory of lowest Landau level quarks with the leading order QCD collision term arising from 1-to-2 processes that become possible due to 1+1 dimensional Landau level kinematics. In small $m_q/T\ll 1$ regime, the longitudinal conductivity behaves as $σ_{zz}\sim e^2(eB)T/(α_s m_q^2\log(m_q/T))$, where the quark mass dependence can be understood from the chiral anomaly with the axial charge relaxation provided by a finite quark mass $m_q$. We also present parametric estimates for the longitudinal and transverse "color conductivities" in the presence of strong magnetic field, by computing dominant damping rates for quarks and gluons that are responsible for color charge transportation. We observe that the longitudinal color conductivity is enhanced by strong magnetic field, which implies that the sphaleron transition rate in perturbative QCD is suppressed by strong magnetic field due to the enhanced Lenz's law in color field dynamics.
