Possible Intermediate Quantum Spin Liquid Phase in $α$-RuCl$_3$ under High Magnetic Fields up to 100 T

Pursuing the exotic quantum spin liquid (QSL) state in the Kitaev material $α$-RuCl$_3$ has intrigued great research interest recently. A fascinating question is on the possible existence of field-induced QSL phase in this compound. Here we perform a high-field measurement of the magnetization process of $α$-RuCl$_3$ up to 102 T employing the non-destructive and destructive pulsed magnets. Under the out-of-plane field along the c$^*$ axis (i.e., perpendicular to the honeycomb plane), two quantum phase transitions are uncovered at respectively 36 T and about 83 T, between which there lies an intermediate phase as the predicted QSL. By measuring the magnetization data with fields tilted from the c$^*$ axis up to $90^\circ$ (i.e., in-plane direction), we obtain the field-angle phase diagram that contains the zigzag, paramagnetic, and QSL phases. Based on the accurate $K$-$J$-$Γ$-$Γ^{\prime}$ model of $α$-RuCl$_3$, we perform density matrix renormalization group simulations and reproduce the quantum phase diagram in excellent agreement with experiments.

Structural and Electronic Properties of a Triangular Lattice Magnet NaPrTe$_2$ Compared with NaNdTe$_2$ and NaTbTe$_2$

NaPrTe2, NaNdTe2, and NaTbTe2 are found to be triangular lattice magnets with the alpha-NaFeO2 structure, where lanthanoid atoms with 4f electrons form a triangular lattice, based on the structural analysis and physical property measurements of synthesized polycrystalline samples. The alpha-NaFeO2 structure is a new polymorph of NaPrTe2, which has been reported to crystallize in the cubic LiTiO2 structure. Polytypism in NaPrTe2 was discussed based on the structural parameters determined by the Rietveld analysis. NaPrTe2 is suggested to be in the proximity of the phase boundary between the LiTiO2 and alpha-NaFeO2 types, as compared to NaNdTe2 and NaTbTe2, indicating that this compound might be interesting from the perspectives of the dimensional control of geometrically frustrated lattices. The magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data indicated that NaPrTe2 do not show long-range magnetic order or a spin-glass transition above 2 K.

Superconductivity at 12 K in La$_2$IOs$_2$: a 5d metal with osmium honeycomb layer

We discovered superconductivity at $T_c$ = 12 K in a layered compound La$_2$IOs$_2$ with osmium honeycomb network. Despite heavy constituent elements unfavorable for phonon mediated mechanism, $T_c$ is the highest among lanthanoid iodides made of lighter elements such as La$_2$IRu$_2$ with $T_c$ = 4.8 K. Electronic anomalies are observed below 60 K similar to those observed in La$_2$IRu$_2$ below 140 K. La$_2$IOs$_2$ is a layered 5d electron system providing a platform to investigate the interplay between the electronic anomaly, superconductivity, and strong magnetic field.

Magnetic field induced valence change in Eu(Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{2}$P$_{2}$ up to 60 T

The solid solution 122 compounds, Eu(Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{2}$P$_{2}$, show valence transition between divalent state and intermediate valence states at Eu, which is firmly correlated to multiple degrees of freedom in the solid such as the isostructural transition between the collapsed tetragonal (cT) and uncollapsed tetragonal (ucT) structures, $3d$ magnetism, and the formation of P-P dimers. To gain insights into the correlated behavior, we investigate the effect of high magnetic fields on the samples of $x = 0.4$ and $0.5$ using magnetostriction and magnetization measurements up to 60 T. The samples are in the Eu valence fluctuating regime, where the possible structural transition from cT to ucT may be induced by the Eu valence change under the magnetic fields. For both samples, magnetostriction smoothly increases with increasing magnetic fields. The behavior is in good agreement with the calculated results using the interconfigurational fluctuation (ICF) model that describes the valence change. This indicates that $ΔL$ represents the change of the Eu valence state in these compounds. Magnetization curves for both compounds show good agreement with the ICF model at high magnetic fields. In contrast, in the low magnetic field region, magnetization curves do not agree with the ICF model. These results indicate that the Eu valence changes manifest themselves in the magnetization curves at high magnetic fields and that the magnetism of the $3d$ electrons manifests itself in the magnetization at low magnetic fields. Hence, we conclude that the valence change occurs within the Eu valence fluctuation regime coupled with the cT structure. Thereby, we believe that the transition to ucT structure which is firmly coupled with the divalent Eu state does not occur within the magnetic field range of the present study. (Continued)

Simultaneous measurement of specific heat and thermal conductivity in pulsed magnetic fields

We report an experimental setup for simultaneously measuring specific heat and thermal conductivity in feedback-controlled pulsed magnetic fields of 50 msec duration at cryogenic temperatures. A stabilized magnetic field pulse obtained by the feedback control, which dramatically improves the thermal stability of the setup and sample, is used in combination with the flash method to obtain absolute values of thermal properties up to 37.2 T in the 2 K to 16 K temperature range. We describe the experimental setup and demonstrate the performance of the present method with measurements on single crystal samples of the geometrically frustrated quantum spin-dimer system SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. Our proof-of-principle results show excellent agreement with data taken using a standard steady-state method, confirming the validity and convenience of the present approach.

Perfect kagome-lattice antiferromagnets with J$_{eff}$ = 1/2: The Co$^{2+}$-analogs of copper minerals volborthite and vesignieite

We report the synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of Co$^{2+}$ kagome magnets Co$_3$V$_2$O$_7$(OH)$_2$$\cdot$2H$_2$O and BaCo$_3$(VO$_4$)$_2$(OH)$_2$, which can be recognized as Co-analogues of the intensively researched quantum kagome magnet volborthite Cu$_3$V$_2$O$_7$(OH)$_2$$\cdot$2H$_2$O and vesignieite BaCu$_3$(VO$_4$)$_2$(OH)$_2$. For each compound, the ground state is seemingly A-type antiferromagnetic order. At low temperatures, applying a magnetic field causes a metamagnetic-like transition described by the transition in which antiferromagnetically-aligned canted moments change to ferromagnetically-aligned ones. These ground and field-induced states include a canted ferromagnetic component perpendicular to the kagome planes favored by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. These magnetic properties are well characterized by the J$_{eff}$ = 1/2 physics. Our findings will be the first step toward clarifying the J$_{eff}$ = 1/2 kagome physics, which has been little studied experimentally or theoretically.

Emergent anisotropy in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state

Exotic superconductivity is formed by unconventional electron pairing and exhibits various unique properties that cannot be explained by the basic theory. The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state is known as an exotic superconducting state in that the electron pairs have a finite center-of-mass momentum leading to a spatially modulated pattern of superconductivity. The spatial modulation endows the FFLO state with emergent anisotropy. However, the anisotropy has never been experimentally verified despite numerous efforts over the years. Here, we report detection of anisotropic acoustic responses depending on the sound propagation direction appearing above the Pauli limit. This anisotropy reveals that the two-dimensional FFLO state has a center-of-mass momentum parallel to the nesting vector on the Fermi surface. The present findings will facilitate our understanding of not only superconductivity in solids but also exotic pairings of various particles.

Magnetically hidden state on the ground floor of the magnetic Devil's staircase

We investigated the low-temperature and high-field thermodynamic and ultrasonic properties of SrCu2(BO3)2, which exhibits various plateaux in its magnetization curve above 27~T, called a magnetic Devil's staircase. The results of the present study confirm that magnetic crystallization, the first step of the staircase, occurs above 27~T as a 1st-order transition accompanied by a sharp singularity in heat capacity $C_p$ and a kink in the elastic constant. In addition, we observe a thermodynamic anomaly at lower fields around 26~T, which has not been previously detected by any magnetic probes. At low temperatures, this magnetically hidden state has a large entropy and does not exhibit Schottky-type gapped behavior, which suggests the existence of low-energy collective excitations. Based on our observations and theoretical predictions, we propose that magnetic quadrupoles form a spin-nematic state around 26~T as a hidden state on the ground floor of the magnetic Devil's staircase.

Field-orientation dependence of quantum phase transitions in the S=1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$

Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ approximates the two-dimensional spin-1/2 triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. This compound displays magnetic-field-induced quantum phase transitions, including the 1/3-magnetization-plateau, but its magnetization processes for the magnetic field $H$ parallel and perpendicular to the $c$ axis are different due to the weak easy-plane anisotropy and the weak interlayer antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. To elucidate how the quantum phase transitions change between these two field directions, we measured the field-angle dependence of the magnetization process in Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ using pulsed high magnetic fields. We compared obtained magnetic field-field angle phase diagram with those obtained by the large-size cluster mean-field method combined with a scaling scheme and the semiclassical theory. We also found a narrow 1/3-magnetization plateau and a high-field transition with a small magnetization jump for $H\,{\parallel}\,c$, not observed in the previous studies.

SmI3: 4f5 honeycomb magnet with spin-orbital entangled Γ7 Kramers doublet

We report magnetic properties of a 4f-honeycomb iodide SmI3 made up of edge-shared network of SmI6 octahedra. High temperature magnetic susceptibility indicates Γ7 Kramers doublet ground state of Sm3+ (4f5) ions stabilized by the spin-orbit coupling and octahedral crystal electric field, which interact with Sm-I-Sm bond angle nearly 90 degree. Magnetization measurements down to 0.1 K detected antiferromagnetic correlations and an anomaly in the magnetization curve before saturation without a sign of long-range order. Relevance between SmI3 and the antiferromagnetic Kitaev material proposed in the 4f-electron system is discussed.

Revised phase diagram of the high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductor Pb-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ revealed by anisotropic transport measurements

Although phase diagrams can be leveraged to investigate high transition temperature (high-$T_c$) superconductivity, the issue has not been discussed thoroughly. In this study, we elucidate the phase diagram of the overdoped side of high-$T_c$ cuprates via systematic anisotropic transport measurements for Pb-doped Bi-2212 single crystals. We demonstrate that the characteristic temperatures of the "weak" pseudogap opening and electronic coherence cross each other at a critical doping level, while those of the "strong" pseudogap merges into that of superconducting fluctuations above the critical doping level. Our results indicate the importance of Mottness in high-$T_c$ superconductivity.

Quantum paramagnetism in the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-ZnIrO$_3$

A polycrystalline sample of the hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-ZnIrO$_3$ was synthesized via a topochemical reaction, and its structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties were investigated. The magnetization and heat capacity data show the absence of long-range magnetic order at least down to 2 K. A positive Curie-Weiss temperature $θ_W \sim 45$ K probed by the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility indicates that a Kitaev interaction is dominant. These observations suggest that a quantum spin liquid may have been realized. Furthermore, the observation of linear temperature-dependent contribution to the heat capacity with no magnetic field effect evidences gapless excitation. These facts are surprisingly contrary to the chemical disorder evidenced by the crystallographic analysis. By discussing the differences in the size effect of Z$_2$-fluxes in 2D and 3D Kitaev magnets, we propose that there is a hidden mechanism to protect the quantum spin liquid state from chemical disorder.

Quantum antiferromagnet bluebellite comprising a maple-leaf lattice made of spin-1/2 Cu$^{2+}$ ions

Spin-1/2 maple leaf lattice antiferromagnets are expected to show interesting phenomena originating from frustration effects and quantum fluctuations. We report the hydrothermal synthesis of a powder sample of bluebellite Cu$_6$IO$_3$(OH)$_{10}$Cl as a first potential candidate. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements reveal moderate frustration with a Curie-Weiss temperature of $-35$ K, and a magnetic transition at $T_N$ = 17 K. Surprisingly, the magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity above $T_N$ are well reproduced by the Bonner-Fisher model, which suggests that a one-dimensional spin correlation with a magnetic interaction of 25 K occurs in the apparently two-dimensional lattice. This emergent one-dimensionality cannot be explained by orbital ordering or dimensional reduction due to geometrical frustration. We believe that there is an unknown mechanism to cause one-dimensionality in the spin-1/2 maple leaf lattice antiferromagnet.

Phase transition in the 5d1 double perovskite Ba2CaReO6 induced by high magnetic field

Magnetic properties of an antiferromagnetic double perovskite oxide Ba2CaReO6, where Re6+ (5d1) ions with large spin-orbit coupling are arranged on the face-centered-cubic lattice, are investigated using pulsed high magnetic field up to 66 T. Magnetization and magnetostriction measurements have revealed a magnetic field induced phase transition at around 50 T. The phase transition accompanies a jump of magnetization and longitudinal magnetostriction of approximately 2 10^(-4) with the change of power law behavior, indicating sizable coupling between the electronic degrees of freedom and the lattice. The high field phase exhibits a magnetic moment approximately 0.2 μB, which is close to the values observed in 5d1 double perovskite oxides with non-collinear magnetic structure. We argue that Ba2CaReO6 is an antiferromagnet that sits close to the phase boundary between the collinear and non-collinear phases, providing the target material for investigating the interplay between spin-orbital entangled electrons and magnetic field.

GdV6Sn6: a Multi-carrier Metal with Non-magnetic 3d-electron Kagome Bands and 4f-electron Magnetism

Electronic properties of the single crystal of GdV6Sn6, where non-magnetic V-kagome layers are separated by magnetic Gd-triangular lattice, are investigated. GdV6Sn6 exhibits unique magnetotransport properties at low-temperature such as non-linear Hall resistivity and increase of resistance R in magnetic field H as R ~ H^0.75 up to 56 T with Shubnikov-De Haas oscillations. Investigation of the non-magnetic analogue YV6Sn6 and the first principles calculations reveal these properties are relevant to the bands arising from the V-kagome layer. A magnetic transition at 5 K in GdV6Sn6 modifies the transport properties, pointing to a coupling between Gd-spins on the triangular lattice and carriers in the V-kagome layer.

NMR measurements in dynamically controlled field pulse

We present the architecture of the versatile NMR spectrometer with software-defined radio (SDR) technology and its application to the dynamically controlled pulsed magnetic fields. The pulse-field technology is the only solution to access magnetic fields greater than 50 T, but the NMR experiment in the pulsed magnetic field was difficult because of the continuously changing field strength. The dynamically controlled field pulse allows us to perform NMR experiment in a quasi-steady field condition by creating a constant magnetic field for a short time around the peak of the field pulse. We confirmed the reproducibility of the field pulses using the NMR spectroscopy as a high precision magnetometer. With the highly reproducible field strength we succeeded in measuring the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$, which had never been measured by the pulse-field NMR experiment without dynamic field control. We also implement the NMR spectrum measurement with both the frequency-sweep and field-sweep modes and discuss the appropriate choice of these modes depending on the magnetic properties of sample to be measured. This development, with further improvement at a long-duration field pulse, will innovate the microscopic measurement in extremely high magnetic fields.

Spin-gap formation due to spin-Peierls instability in $π$-orbital-ordered NaO$_2$

We have investigated the low-temperature magnetism of sodium superoxide (NaO$_{2}$), in which spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom are closely entangled. The magnetic susceptibility shows anomalies at $T_{1}=220$ K and $T_{2}=190$ K, which correspond well to the structural phase transition temperatures, and a sudden decrease below $T_{3}=34$ K. At 4.2 K, the magnetization shows a clear stepwise anomaly around 30 T with a large hysteresis. In addition, the muon spin relaxation experiments indicate no magnetic phase transition down to $T=0.3$ K. The inelastic neutron scattering spectrum exhibits magnetic excitation with a finite energy gap. These results confirm that the ground state of NaO$_{2}$ is a spin-singlet state. To understand this ground state in NaO$_{2}$, we performed Raman scattering experiments. All the Raman-active libration modes expected for the marcasite phase below $T_{2}$ are observed. Furthermore, we find that several new peaks appear below $T_{3}$. This directly evidences the low crystal symmetry, namely, the presence of the phase transition at $T_{3}$. We conclude the singlet-ground state of NaO$_{2}$ due to the spin-Peierls instability.

Extraordinary $π$-Electron Superconductivity Emerging from a Quantum Spin Liquid

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs), in which spins are highly entangled, have been considered a groundwork for generating exotic superconductivity.Despite numerous efforts, superconductivity emerging from QSLs has been unrealized in actual materials due to the difficulties in stabilizing QSL states with metallic conductivity.Recently, an organic compound, $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_4$Hg$_{2.89}$Br$_8$, with a nearly regular triangular lattice of molecular dimers was recognized as a candidate for doped QSLs. In this study, we report an unusual superconducting phase of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_4$Hg$_{2.89}$Br$_8$: unexpectedly large ratios of the upper critical field to the critical temperature $H_{\rm c2}$/$T_{\rm c}$ in fields not only parallel but also perpendicular to the two-dimensional conducting layers and a very wide region of fluctuating superconductivity above $T_{\rm c}$.Our results reveal that these peculiarities arise from strong electron correlations and possible quantum criticality unique to the doped QSL state, leading to a heavy mass of itinerant carriers and a large superconducting energy gap.
