Instantaneous Photon Drag Currents in Topological Insulators

Topological insulator materials have been extensively studied in the field of condensed matter physics because nontrivial topology in the electronic state gives rise to a novel spin-polarized Dirac dispersion on the surface. To describe the electrodynamics of topological insulators, it is crucial to understand coherent and incoherent dynamics of carriers both in bulk and surface states. We applied terahertz emission spectroscopy to an intrinsic three-dimensional topological insulator material, $Bi_{1.5} Sb_{0.5} Te_{1.7} Se_{1.3}$, to elucidate ultrafast photo-induced carrier dynamics. The emitted terahertz electric field strongly depended on the polarization and incident angle of the excitation pulse. A three-fold rotational symmetry was clearly confirmed in the dependence of terahertz emissions on the azimuthal angle. The origin of terahertz emissions should be instantaneous photon drag currents induced by the excitation of femtosecond pulses.

Terahertz radiation induced ballistic electron transport in graphene

We investigated ultrafast carrier dynamics in graphene with near-infrared transient absorption measurement after intense half-cycle terahertz pulse excitation. The terahertz electric field efficiently drives the carriers, inducing large transparency in the near-infrared region. Theoretical calculations using the Boltzmann transport equation quantitatively reproduce the experimental findings. This good agreement suggests that the intense terahertz field should promote remarkable impact ioniza- tion process, which leads to suppression of optical phonon emission and results in efficient carrier transport in graphene.

Infrared study of spin crossover Fe-picolylamine complex

Infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy has been used to probe the evolution of microscopic vibrational states upon the temperature- and photo-induced spin crossovers in [Fe(2-picolylamine)3]Cl2EtOH (Fe-pic). To overcome the small sizes and the strong IR absorption of the crystal samples used, an IR synchrotron radiation source and an IR microscope have been used. The obtained IR spectra of Fe-pic show large changes between high-spin and low-spin states for both the temperature- and the photo- induced spin crossovers. Although the spectra in the temperature- and photo-induced high-spin states are relatively similar to each other, they show distinct differences below 750 cm-1. This demonstrates that the photo-induced high-spin state involves microscopically different characters from those of the temperature-induced high-spin state. The results are discussed in terms of local pressure and structural deformations within the picolylamine ligands, and in terms of their possible relevance to the development of macroscopic photo-induced phase in Fe-pic.

Self-trapped electrons and holes in PbBr$_2$ crystals

We have directly observed self-trapped electrons and holes in PbBr$_{2}$ crystals with electron-spin-resonance (ESR) technique. The self-trapped states are induced below 8 K by two-photon interband excitation with pulsed 120-fs-width laser light at 3.10 eV. Spin-Hamiltonian analyses of the ESR signals have revealed that the self-trapping electron centers are the dimer molecules of Pb$_2$$^{3+}$ along the crystallographic a axis and the self-trapping hole centers are those of Br$_2$$^-$ with two possible configurations in the unit cell of the crystal. Thermal stability of the self-trapped electrons and holes suggests that both of them are related to the blue-green luminescence band at 2.55 eV coming from recombination of spatially separated electron-hole pairs.
