Combable functions, quasimorphisms, and the central limit theorem

A function on a discrete group is weakly combable if its discrete derivative with respect to a combing can be calculated by a finite state automaton. A weakly combable function is bicombable if it is Lipschitz in both the left and right invariant word metrics. Examples of bicombable functions on word-hyperbolic groups include (i) homomorphisms to Z (ii) word length with respect to a finite generating set (iii) most known explicit constructions of quasimorphisms (e.g. the Epstein-Fujiwara counting quasimorphisms) We show that bicombable functions on word-hyperbolic groups satisfy a central limit theorem: if \barϕ_n is the value of ϕon a random element of word length n (in a certain sense), there are E and σfor which there is convergence in the sense of distribution n^{-1/2}(\barϕ_n - nE) \to N(0,σ), where N(0,σ) denotes the normal distribution with standard deviation σ. As a corollary, we show that if S_1 and S_2 are any two finite generating sets for G, there is an algebraic number lambda_{1,2} depending on S_1 and S_2 such that almost every word of length n in the S_1 metric has word length nλ_{1,2} in the S_2 metric, with error of size O(\sqrt{n}).

Rank one isometries of buildings and quasi-morphisms of Kac-Moody groups

Given an irreducible non-spherical non-affine (possibly non-proper) building $X$, we give sufficient conditions for a group $G < \Aut(X)$ to admit an infinite-dimensional space of non-trivial quasi-morphisms. The result applies to all irreducible (non-spherical and non-affine) Kac-Moody groups over integral domains. In particular, we obtain finitely presented simple groups of infinite commutator width, thereby answering a question of Valerii G. Bardakov from the Kourovka notebook. Independently of these considerations, we also include a discussion of rank one isometries of proper CAT(0) spaces from a rigidity viewpoint. In an appendix, we show that any homogeneous quasi-morphism of a locally compact group with integer values is continuous.

Copies of a one-ended group in a Mapping Class Group

We establish that, given $Σ$ a compact orientable surface, and $G$ a finitely presented one-ended group, the set of copies of $G$ in the mapping class group $\mathcal{MCG}(Σ)$ consisting of only pseudo-anosov elements except identity, is finite up to conjugacy. This relies on a result of Bowditch on the same problem for images of surfaces groups. He asked us whether we could reduce the case of one-ended groups to his result ; this is a positive answer. Our work involves analogues of Rips and Sela canonical cylinders in curve complexes, and the argument of Delzant to bound the number of images of a one-ended group in a hyperbolic group.

CAT(0) and CAT(-1) fillings of hyperbolic manifolds

We give new examples of hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups of cohomological dimension $d$ for all $d\geq 4$. These examples result from applying CAT$(0)$/CAT$(-1)$ filling constructions (based on singular doubly warped products) to finite volume hyperbolic manifolds with toral cusps. The groups obtained have a number of interesting properties, which are established by analyzing their boundaries at infinity by a kind of Morse-theoretic technique, related to but distinct from ordinary and combinatorial Morse theory.

A characterization of higher rank symmetric spaces via bounded cohomology

Let $M$ be complete nonpositively curved Riemannian manifold of finite volume whose fundamental group $Γ$ does not contain a finite index subgroup which is a product of infinite groups. We show that the universal cover $\tilde M$ is a higher rank symmetric space iff $H^2_b(M;\R)\to H^2(M;\R)$ is injective (and otherwise the kernel is infinite-dimensional). This is the converse of a theorem of Burger-Monod. The proof uses the celebrated Rank Rigidity Theorem, as well as a new construction of quasi-homomorphisms on groups that act on CAT(0) spaces and contain rank 1 elements.

Quasi-homomorphisms on mapping class groups

We refine the construction of quasi-homomorphisms on mapping class groups. It is useful to know that there are unbounded quasi-homomorphisms which are bounded when restricted to particular subgroups since then one deduces that the mapping class group is not boundedly generated by these subgroups. In this note we enlarge the class of such subgroups. The generalization is motivated by considerations in first order theory of free groups.

The asymptotic dimension of a curve graph is finite

We find an upper bound for the asymptotic dimension of a hyperbolic metric space with a set of geodesics satisfying a certain boundedness condition studied by Bowditch. The primary example is a collection of tight geodesics on the curve graph of a compact orientable surface. We use this to conclude that a curve graph has finite asymptotic dimension. It follows then that a curve graph has property $A_1$. We also compute the asymptotic dimension of mapping class groups of orientable surfaces with genus $\le 2$.

A note on spaces of asymptotic dimension one

Let $X$ be a geodesic metric space with $H_1(X)$ uniformly generated. If $X$ has asymptotic dimension one then $X$ is quasi-isometric to an unbounded tree. As a corollary, we show that the asymptotic dimension of the curve graph of a compact, oriented surface with genus $g \ge 2$ and one boundary component is at least two.

JSJ-decompositions of finitely presented groups and complexes of groups

A JSJ-splitting of a group $G$ over a certain class of subgroups is a graph of groups decomposition of $G$ which describes all possible decompositions of $G$ as an amalgamated product or an HNN extension over subgroups lying in the given class. Such decompositions originated in 3-manifold topology. In this paper we generalize the JSJ-splitting constructions of Sela, Rips-Sela and Dunwoody-Sageev and we construct a JSJ-splitting for any finitely presented group with respect to the class of all slender subgroups along which the group splits. Our approach relies on Haefliger's theory of group actions on CAT$(0)$ spaces.

Parabolic isometries of CAT(0) spaces and CAT(0) dimensions

We study discrete groups from the view point of a dimension gap in connection to CAT(0) geometry. Developing studies by Brady-Crisp and Bridson, we show that there exist finitely presented groups of geometric dimension 2 which do not act properly on any proper CAT(0) spaces of dimension 2 by isometries, although such actions exist on CAT(0) spaces of dimension 3. Another example is the fundamental group, G, of a complete, non-compact, complex hyperbolic manifold M with finite volume, of complex-dimension n > 1. The group G is acting on the universal cover of M, which is isometric to H^n_C. It is a CAT(-1) space of dimension 2n. The geometric dimension of G is 2n-1. We show that G does not act on any proper CAT(0) space of dimension 2n-1 properly by isometries. We also discuss the fundamental groups of a torus bundle over a circle, and solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups.

Fixed point sets of parabolic isometries of CAT(0)-spaces

We study the fixed point set in the ideal boundary of a parabolic isometry of a proper CAT(0)-space. We show that the radius of the fixed point set is at most pi/2, and study its centers. As a consequence, we prove that the set of fixed points is contractible with respect to the Tits topology.

Bounded cohomology of subgroups of mapping class groups

We show that every subgroup of the mapping class group MCG(S) of a compact surface S is either virtually abelian or it has infinite dimensional second bounded cohomology. As an application, we give another proof of the Farb-Kaimanovich-Masur rigidity theorem that states that MCG(S) does not contain a higher rank lattice as a subgroup.
