Constraining particle dark matter using local galaxy distribution

It has been long discussed that cosmic rays may contain signals of dark matter. In the last couple of years an anomaly of cosmic-ray positrons has drawn a lot of attentions, and recently an excess in cosmic-ray anti-proton has been reported by AMS-02 collaboration. Both excesses may indicate towards decaying or annihilating dark matter with a mass of around 1-10 TeV. In this article we study the gamma rays from dark matter and constraints from cross correlations with distribution of galaxies, particularly in a local volume. We find that gamma rays due to inverse-Compton process have large intensity, and hence they give stringent constraints on dark matter scenarios in the TeV scale mass regime. Taking the recent developments in modeling astrophysical gamma-ray sources as well as comprehensive possibilities of the final state products of dark matter decay or annihilation into account, we show that the parameter regions of decaying dark matter that are suggested to explain the excesses are excluded. We also discuss the constrains on annihilating scenarios.

New Vector-Like Fermions and Flavor Physics

We study renormalizable extensions of the standard model that contain vector-like fermions in a (single) complex representation of the standard model gauge group. There are 11 models where the vector-like fermions Yukawa couple to the standard model fermions via the Higgs field. These models do not introduce additional fine- tunings. They can lead to, and are constrained by, a number of different flavor- changing processes involving leptons and quarks, as well as direct searches. An interesting feature of the models with strongly interacting vector-like fermions is that constraints from neutral meson mixings (apart from CP violation in neutral kaon mixing) are not sensitive to higher scales than other flavor-changing neutral-current processes. We identify order 1/(4 pi M)^2 (where M is the vector-like fermion mass) one-loop contributions to the coefficients of the four-quark operators for meson mixing, that are not suppressed by standard model quark masses and/or mixing angles.

Direct Detection of Vector Dark Matter

In this paper we complete formulae for the elastic cross section of general vector dark matter with nucleon in the direct detection at the leading order of the strong coupling constant, assuming that the dark matter is composed of vector particles. As an application of our formulae, the direct detection of the first Kaluza-Klein photon in the minimal universal extra dimension model is discussed. It is found that the cross section is larger than those in the previous works by up to a factor of ten.

Direct detection of singlet dark matter in classically scale-invariant standard model

Classical scale invariance is one of the possible solutions to explain the origin of the electroweak scale. The simplest extension is the classically scale-invariant standard model augmented by a multiplet of gauge singlet real scalar. In the previous study it was shown that the properties of the Higgs potential deviate substantially, which can be observed in the International Linear Collider. On the other hand, since the multiplet does not acquire vacuum expectation value, the singlet components are stable and can be dark matter. In this letter we study the detectability of the real singlet scalar bosons in the experiment of the direct detection of dark matter. It is shown that a part of this model has already been excluded and the rest of the parameter space is within the reach of the future experiment.

Constraints on decaying dark matter from the extragalactic gamma-ray background

If dark matter is unstable and the mass is within GeV-TeV regime, its decays produce high-energy photons that give contribution to the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGRB). We constrain dark matter decay by analyzing the 50-month EGRB data measured with Fermi satellite, for different decay channels motivated with several supersymmetric scenarios featuring R-parity violation. We adopt the latest astrophysical models for various source classes such as active galactic nuclei and star-forming galaxies, and take associated uncertainties properly into account. The lower limits for the lifetime are very stringent for a wide range of dark matter mass, excluding the lifetime shorter than 10^28 s for mass between a few hundred GeV and ~1TeV, e.g., for b\bar{b} decay channel. Furthermore, most dark matter models that explain the anomalous positron excess are also excluded. These constraints are robust, being little dependent on astrophysical uncertainties, unlike other probes such as Galactic positrons or anti-protons.

Grand Unification and Subcritical Hybrid Inflation

We consider hybrid inflation for small couplings of the inflaton to matter such that the critical value of the inflaton field exceeds the Planck mass. It has recently been shown that inflation then continues at subcritical inflaton field values where quantum fluctuations generate an effective inflaton mass. The effective inflaton potential interpolates between a quadratic potential at small field values and a plateau at large field values. An analysis of the allowed parameter space leads to predictions for the scalar spectral index n_s and the tensor-to-scalar ratio r similar to those of natural inflation. Using the range for n_s and r favoured by the Planck data, we find that the energy scale of the plateau is constrained to the interval (1.6 - 2.4) * 10^16 GeV which includes the energy scale of gauge coupling unification in the supersymmetric standard model. The tensor-to-scalar ratio is predicted to have the lower bound r > 0.049 for 60 e-folds before the end of inflation.

QCD Effects on Direct Detection of Wino Dark Matter

We complete the calculation of the wino-nucleon scattering cross section up to the next-to-leading order in $α_s$. We assume that the other sparticles are decoupled and wino interacts with the Standard Model particles via the weak interaction. As a result, the uncertainties coming from the perturbative QCD are significantly reduced to be smaller than those from the nucleon matrix elements. The resultant scattering cross section is found to be larger than the leading-order one by about 70%, which is well above the neutrino background. In the limit of large wino mass the spin-independent scattering cross section with proton turns out $σ_{\text{SI}}^p = 2.3~{}^{+0.2}_{-0.3}~{}^{+0.5}_{-0.4}\times 10^{-47}~ \text{cm}^2$ (errors come from perturbative calculation and input parameters, respectively). The computation for a generic SU(2)$_L$ multiplet dark matter is also presented.

Axino Dark Matter in Moduli-induced Baryogenesis

We consider axino dark matter in large R-parity violation (RPV). In moduli-dominated universe, axino is produced thermally or non-thermally via saxion decay, then late-decaying moduli dilute axino density, which results in the right abundance to explain the present dark matter. At the same time baryon asymmetry is generated due to moduli-induced baryogenesis via the large RPV. Axino is cosmologically stable in spite of the large RPV since its decay rate is suppressed by the axion decay constant, heavy squark mass or kinematics.

Moduli-induced Baryogenesis

We study a scenario for baryogenesis in modular cosmology and discuss its implications for the moduli stabilization mechanism and the supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking scale. If moduli fields dominate the Universe and decay into the standard model particles through diatonic couplings, the right amount of baryon asymmetry can be generated through CP violating decay of gluino into quark and squark followed by baryon-number violating squark decay. We find that, in the KKLT-type moduli stabilization, at least two non-perturbative terms are required to obtain a sizable CP phase, and that the successful baryogenesis is possible for the soft SUSY breaking mass heavier than O(1) TeV. A part of the parameter space for successful baryogenesis can be probed at the collider experiments, dinucleon decay search experiment, and the measurements of electric dipole moments of neutron and electron. It is also shown that similar baryogenesis works in the case of the gravitino- or the saxion-dominated Universe.

Phenomenology of heavy vector-like leptons

We study the impact that a heavy generation of vector-like leptons can have on the value of the electric dipole moment of the electron, and the rates for the flavor violating processes mu --> e gamma and mu --> 3e. The smallness of the charged lepton masses suggests that at least some of the Yukawa coupling constants of the vector-like leptons to the ordinary leptons or amongst themselves are small, but even with such small couplings experiments trying to detect these quantities are sensitive to extra generation lepton masses up to about 100 TeV.

Baryogenesis with Higher Dimension Operators

We propose a simple model of baryogenesis comprised of the standard model coupled to a singlet X via higher dimension operators O. In the early universe, X is thermalized by O mediated scattering processes before it decouples relativistically and evolves into a sizable fraction of the total energy density. Eventually, X decays via O in an out of equilibrium, baryon number and CP violating process that releases entropy and achieves baryogenesis for a broad range of parameters. The decay can also produce a primordial abundance of dark matter. Because X may be as light as a TeV, viable regions of parameter space lie within reach of experimental probes of neutron-antineutron oscillation, flavor physics, and proton decay.

Direct Search of Dark Matter in High-Scale Supersymmetry

We study direct detection of dark matter in supersymmetric (SUSY) model where most of SUSY particles have very high-scale masses beyond the weak scale. In the scenario, Wino-like or Higgsino-like neutralino is a good candidate for the dark matter in the universe. The neutralino scatters off nuclei by a Higgs-boson exchange diagram and also electroweak loop diagrams. It is found that the elastic-scattering cross section with nuclei is enhanced or suppressed due to constructive or deconstructive interference among the diagrams. Such a cross section is within the reach of future experiment in some parameter region.

Higgs Properties and Fourth Generation Leptons

It is possible that there are additional vector-like generations where the quarks have mass terms that do not originate from weak symmetry breaking, but the leptons only get mass through weak symmetry breaking. We discuss the impact that the new leptons have on Higgs boson decay branching ratios and on the range of allowed Higgs masses in such a model (with a single new vector-like generation). We find that if the fourth generation leptons are too heavy to be produced in Higgs decay, then the new leptons reduce the branching ratio for h -> gamma gamma to about 30% of its standard-model value. The dependence of this branching ratio on the new charged lepton masses is weak. Furthermore the expected Higgs production rate at the LHC is very near its standard-model value if the new quarks are much heavier than the weak scale. If the new quarks have masses near the cutoff for the theory then for cutoffs greater than 10^15 GeV, the new lepton masses cannot be much heavier than about 100 GeV and the Higgs mass must have a value around 175 GeV.

Dark Matter in Classically Scale-Invariant Two Singlets Standard Model

We consider a model where two new scalars are introduced in the standard model, assuming classical scale invariance. In this model the scale invariance is broken by quantum corrections and one of the new scalars acquires non-zero vacuum expectation value (VEV), which induces the electroweak symmetry breaking in the standard model, and the other scalar becomes dark matter. It is shown that TeV scale dark matter is realized, independent of the value of the other scalar's VEV. The impact of the new scalars on the Higgs potential is also discussed. The Higgs potential is stabilized when the Higgs mass is over ~120 GeV.

Natural Supersymmetry and b -> s gamma constraints

We investigate constraints from the observed branching ratio for b -> s gamma and fine-tuning in the framework of natural supersymmetry. The natural supersymmetry requires the large trilinear coupling of the stop sector, light higgsinos (a small mu parameter) and light stops, in order to reduce the fine-tuning in the Higgs sector while avoiding the LEP constraint. It is found that in such a scenario 5% (10%) level of fine-tuning is inevitable due to the b -> s gamma constraint even if the messenger scale is as low as 10^5 GeV (10^4 GeV), provided that the gaugino masses satisfy the GUT relation.

Direct Detection of Dark Matter Degenerate with Colored Particles in Mass

In this Letter we explore the direct detection of the dark matter in the universe, assuming the dark matter particles are degenerate in mass with new colored particles below TeV scale. The scenario with such a mass spectrum is difficult to be confirmed or excluded by the present analysis at the LHC experiments because the QCD jets in the cascade decay of the new particles produced in the proton-proton collision are too soft to be triggered in the event selection. It is shown that both of the spin-independent and spin-dependent couplings of the dark matter with a nucleon are enhanced and the scattering cross section may reach even the current bound of the direct detection experiments. Then such a degenerate scenario may be tested in the direct detection experiments.

Direct Detection of Electroweak-Interacting Dark Matter

Assuming that the lightest neutral component in an SU(2)L gauge multiplet is the main ingredient of dark matter in the universe, we calculate the elastic scattering cross section of the dark matter with nucleon, which is an important quantity for the direct detection experiments. When the dark matter is a real scalar or a Majorana fermion which has only electroweak gauge interactions, the scattering with quarks and gluon are induced through one- and two-loop quantum processes, respectively, and both of them give rise to comparable contributions to the elastic scattering cross section. We evaluate all of the contributions at the leading order and find that there is an accidental cancellation among them. As a result, the spin-independent cross section is found to be O(10^-(46-48)) cm^2, which is far below the current experimental bounds.

Fourth Generation Bound States

We investigate the spectrum and wave functions of {\bar q}'q' bound states for heavy fourth generation quarks (q') that have a very small mixing with the three observed generations of standard model quarks. Such bound states come with different color, spin and flavor quantum numbers. Since the fourth generation Yukawa coupling, λ_{q'}, is large we include all perturbative corrections to the potential between the heavy quark and antiquark of order λ_{q'}^2N_c/16π^2 where N_c is the number of colors, as well as relativistic corrections suppressed by (v/c)^2. We find that the lightest fourth generation quark masses for which a bound state exists for color octet states. For the the color singlet states, which always have a bound state, we analyze the influence that the Higgs couplings have on the size and binding energy of the bound states.
