Screening with Advertisements

We investigate a seller's revenue-maximizing mechanism in a setting where a desirable good is sold together with an undesirable bad (e.g., advertisements) that generates third-party revenue. The buyer's private information is two-dimensional: valuation for the good and willingness to pay to avoid the bad. Following the duality framework of Daskalakis, Deckelbaum, and Tzamos (2017), whose results extend to our setting, we formulate the seller's problem using a transformed measure $μ$ that depends on the third-party payment $k$. We provide a near-characterization for optimality of three pricing mechanisms commonly used in practice -- the Good-Only, Ad-Tiered, and Single-Bundle Posted Price -- and introduce a new class of tractable, interpretable two-dimensional orthant conditions on $μ$ for sufficiency. Economically, $k$ yields a clean comparative static: low $k$ excludes the bad, intermediate $k$ separates ad-tolerant and ad-averse buyers, and high $k$ bundles ads for all types.

Selling to a principal and a budget-constrained agent

We analyze a model of selling a single object to a principal-agent pair who want to acquire the object for a firm. The principal and the agent have different assessments of the object's value to the firm. The agent is budget-constrained while the principal is not. The agent participates in the mechanism, but she can (strategically) delegate decision-making to the principal. We derive the revenue-maximizing mechanism in a two-dimensional type space (values of the agent and the principal). We show that below a threshold budget, a mechanism involving two posted prices and three outcomes (one of which involves randomization) is the optimal mechanism for the seller. Otherwise, a single posted price mechanism is optimal.

Selling two complementary goods

A seller is selling a pair of divisible complementary goods to an agent. The agent consumes the goods only in a specific ratio and freely disposes of excess in either goods. The value of the bundle and the ratio are private information of the agent. In this two-dimensional type space model, we characterize the incentive constraints and show that the optimal (expected revenue-maximizing) mechanism is a ratio-dependent posted price or a posted price mechanism for a class of distributions. We also show that the optimal mechanism is a posted price mechanism when the value and the ratio are independently distributed.
