Hamiltonian Theory: generalizations to higher dimensions, supersymmetry and modified gravity

Loop quantum gravity in its Hamiltonian form relies on a connection formulation of the gravitational phase space with three key properties: 1.) a compact gauge group, 2.) real variables, and 3.) canonical Poisson brackets. In conjunction, these properties allow to construct a well defined kinematical quantization of the holonomy flux-algebra on top of which the remaining constraints can be implemented. While this idea has traditionally been mainly used for Einstein gravity, any gravitational theory with the above properties can be accommodated. In this paper, we are going to review three strands of work building on this observation, namely the study of higher-dimensional loop quantum gravity, supersymmetric extensions of loop quantum gravity, as well as the quantization of modified gravitational theories.

Poincar\'e Duality and Supergravity

We study relative differential and integral forms on families of supermanifolds and their cohomology. We prove a relative Poincar\'e--Verdier duality and show that it relates the cohomology of differential and integral forms, admitting a concrete geometric realization via Berezin fiber integration. We further introduce the Poincar\'e--dual integral form associated to an embedded even family and prove that it satisfies the correct localization property. We then apply these results to supergravity, focusing on the $3d$ case. In this setting, we show that relative Poincar\'e duality provides the natural framework for encoding the data needed to relate a superspace formulation to the physical spacetime, thereby yielding a rigorous definition of picture changing operators used in the physics literature. Building on this, after a careful analysis of the space of fields and the relevant constraints, we prove that the component, superspace, and geometric formulation of the theory are all equivalent. Finally, under suitable hypotheses, we argue that our construction illustrates a general principle governing the mathematical formulation of classical field theories on supermanifolds.

Chiral loop quantum supergravity and black hole entropy

Recent work has shown that local supersymmetry on a spacetime boundary in $\mathcal{N}$-extended AdS supergravity in chiral variables implies coupling to a boundary $\mathrm{OSp}(\mathcal{N}|2)_{\mathbb{C}}$ super Chern-Simons theory. We propose a way to calculate the entropy $S$ for the boundary, in the supersymmetric version of loop quantum gravity, for the minimal case $\mathcal{N}=1$. We calculate the dimensions of the quantum state spaces of $\mathrm{UOSp}(1|2)$ super Chern-Simons theory with punctures, and analytically continue, for fixed quantum super area of the surface, to $\mathrm{OSp}(1|2)_{\mathbb{C}}$. We find $S = a_H/4$ for large areas and determine the subleading correction.

Towards black hole entropy in chiral loop quantum supergravity

Recently, many geometric aspects of $\mathcal{N}$-extended AdS supergravity in chiral variables have been encountered and clarified. In particular, if the theory is supposed to be invariant under SUSY transformations also on boundaries, the boundary term has to be the action of a $\mathrm{OSp}(\mathcal{N}|2)_{\mathbb{C}}$ super Chern-Simons theory, and particular boundary conditions must be met. Based on this, we propose a way to calculate an entropy $S$ for surfaces, presumably including black hole horizons, in the supersymmetric version of loop quantum gravity for the minimal case $\mathcal{N}=1$. It proceeds in analogy to the non-supersymmetric theory, by calculating dimensions of quantum state spaces of the super Chern-Simons theory with punctures, for fixed quantum (super) area of the surface. We find $S = a_H/4$ for large areas and determine the subleading correction. Due to the non-compactness of $\mathrm{OSp}(1|2)_{\mathbb{C}}$ and the corresponding difficulties with the Chern-Simons quantum theory, we use analytic continuation from the Verlinde formula for a compact real form, $\mathrm{UOSp}(1|2)$, in analogy to work by Noui et al. This also entails studying some properties of $\mathrm{OSp}(1|2)_{\mathbb{C}}$ representations that we have not found elsewhere in the literature.

Holst-MacDowell-Mansouri action for (extended) supergravity with boundaries and super Chern-Simons theory

In this article, the Cartan geometric approach toward (extended) supergravity in the presence of boundaries will be discussed. In particular, based on new developments in this field, we will derive the Holst variant of the MacDowell-Mansouri action for $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ pure AdS supergravity in $D=4$ for arbitrary Barbero-Immirzi parameters. This action turns out to play a crucial role in context of boundaries in the framework of supergravity if one imposes supersymmetry invariance at the boundary. For the $\mathcal{N}=2$ case, it follows that this amounts to the introduction of a $θ$-topological term to the Yang-Mills sector which explicitly depends on the Barbero-Immirzi parameter. This shows the close connection between this parameter and the $θ$-ambiguity of gauge theory. We will also discuss the chiral limit of the theory, which turns out to possess some very special properties such as the manifest invariance of the resulting action under an enlarged gauge symmetry. Moreover, we will show that demanding supersymmetry invariance at the boundary yields a unique boundary term corresponding to a super Chern-Simons theory with $\mathrm{OSp}(\mathcal{N}|2)$ gauge group. In this context, we will also derive boundary conditions that couple boundary and bulk degrees of freedom and show equivalence to the results found in the D'Auria-Fré approach in context of the non-chiral theory. These results provide a step towards of quantum description of supersymmetric black holes in the framework of loop quantum gravity.

Super fiber bundles, connection forms, and parallel transport

The present work provides a mathematically rigorous account on super fiber bundle theory, connection forms and their parallel transport, that ties together various approaches. We begin with a detailed introduction to super fiber bundles. We then introduce the concept of so-called relative supermanifolds as well as bundles and connections defined in these categories. Studying these objects turns out to be of utmost importance in order to, among other things, model anticommuting classical fermionic fields in mathematical physics. We then construct the parallel transport map corresponding to such connections and compare the results with those found by other means in the mathematical literature. Finally, applications of these methods to supergravity will be discussed such as the Cartan geometric formulation of Poincaré supergravity as well as the description of Killing vector fields and Killing spinors of super Riemannian manifolds arising from metric reductive super Cartan geometries.

Super Cartan geometry and the super Ashtekar connection

This work is devoted to the geometric approach to supergravity. More precisely, we interpret $\mathcal{N}=1$, $D=4$ supergravity as a super Cartan geometry which provides a link between supergravity and Yang-Mills theory. To this end, we first review important aspects of the theory of supermanifolds and we establish a link between various different approaches. We then introduce super Cartan geometries using the concept of so-called enriched categories. This, among other things, will enable us to implement anticommutative fermionic fields. We will then also show that non-extended $D=4$ supergravity naturally arises in this framework. Finally, using this gauge-theoretic interpretation as well as the chiral structure of the underlying supersymmetry algebra, we will derive graded analoga of Ashtekar's self-dual variables and interpret them in terms of generalized super Cartan connections. This gives canonical chiral supergravity the structure of a Yang-Mills theory with gauge supergroup similar to the self-dual variables in ordinary first-order Einstein gravity which was first observed by Fülöp \cite{Fulop:1993wi}. We then construct the parallel transport map corresponding to the super connection in mathematical rigorous way using again enriched categories. This provides the possibility of quantizing gravity and matter degrees of freedom in loop quantum gravity in a unified way.

Supersymmetric minisuperspace models in self-dual loop quantum cosmology

In this paper, we study a class of symmetry reduced models of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity using self-dual variables. It is based on a particular Ansatz for the gravitino field as proposed by D'Eath et al. We show that the essential part of the constraint algebra in the classical theory closes. In particular, the (graded) Poisson bracket between the left and right supersymmetry constraint reproduces the Hamiltonian constraint. For the quantum theory, we apply techniques from the manifestly supersymmetric approach to loop quantum supergravity, which yields a graded analog of the holonomy-flux algebra and a natural state space. We implement the remaining constraints in the quantum theory. For a certain subclass of these models, we show explicitly that the (graded) commutator of the supersymmetry constraints exactly reproduces the classical Poisson relations. In particular, the trace of the commutator of left and right supersymmetry constraints reproduces the Hamilton constraint operator. Finally, we consider the dynamics of the theory and compare it to a quantization using standard variables and standard minisuperspace techniques.

$\mathcal{N}=1$ Supergravity with LQG methods and quantization of the SUSY constraint

In this paper, the classical and quantum theory of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity in four spacetime dimensions will be studied in the framework of loop quantum gravity. We discuss the canonical analysis of the supergravity Holst action as first introduced by Tsuda. In this way, we also derive a compact expression of the supersymmetry constraint, which plays a crucial role in canonical supergravity theories, akin to the role of the Hamiltonian constraint in non-supersymmetric generally covariant theories. The resulting theory is then quantized using loop quantum gravity methods. In particular, we propose and discuss a quantization of the supersymmetry constraint and derive explicit expressions of the action of the resulting operator. This is important as it is the first step on the way of analyzing the Dirac algebra generated by supersymmetry and Hamiltonian constraint in the quantum theory and for finding physical states. We also discuss some qualitative properties of such solutions of the SUSY constraint.

Quantum theory of charged isolated horizons

We describe the quantum theory of isolated horizons with electromagnetic or non-Abelian gauge charges in a setting in which both gauge and gravitational field are quantized. We consider the distorted case, and its spherically symmetric limit. We show that the gravitational horizon degrees of freedom give rise to the Bekenstein-Hawking relation, with lower order terms giving some corrections for small black holes. We also demonstrate that one can include matter degrees of freedom into the state counting. We show that one can expect (potentially divergent) contributions proportional to the area, as well as logarithmic correction proportional to the horizon charge. This is qualitatively similar to results on matter contributions obtained with other methods in the literature.
