Multigap diffraction at CDF

We present a study of $\bar pp$ collisions with a leading antiptoton and a rapidity gap in addition to that associated with the antiproton. The second gap is either within the region available to the proton dissociation products, $\bar p+p\to (\bar p+gap)+X+gap+Y$, or adjacent to the outgoing proton $\bar p+p\to (\bar p+gap)+X+(gap+p)$. Results are reported for two-gap to one-gap event ratios and compared with one-gap to no-gap ratios and with theoretical expectations.

The Nuts and Bolts of Diffraction

Results on soft and hard diffraction are briefly reviewed with emphasis on the interplay among factorization properties, universality of rapidity gap formation and unitarity.

CDF results on diffraction from Run I and plans for Run II

Results on soft and hard diffraction obtained by the CDF Collaboration in Run I of the Fermilab Tevatron pbar-p collider are reviewed and compared with results from the DESY e-p collider HERA and with theoretical expectations. In addition, the CDF program for diffractive studies in Run II is briefly reviewed with emphasis on the relevant detector upgrades and physics goals.

Diffraction in hadron-hadron interactions

Results on soft and hard diffraction in $pp$ and $\bar pp$ collisions are reviewed with emphasis on factorization and scaling properties of differential cross sections. While conventional factorization breaks down at high energies, a scaling behavior emerges, which leads to a universal description of diffractive processes in terms of a (re)normalized rapidity gap probability distribution.

The diffractive structure function at the Tevatron: CDF results

Results on hard diffraction from CDF are reviewed with emphasis on the determination of the diffractive structure function of the (anti)proton from single diffractive and double Pomeron exchange dijet production. Comparison of the diffractive dijet results with predictions based on diffractive deep inelastic scattering at HERA shows a breakdown of conventional QCD factorization. A similar breakdown is observed within the CDF results in comparing the structure functions obtained from single diffraction and double Pomeron exchange.

Diffraction: A New Approach

A phenomenological model of hard diffraction is presented, in which the structure of the Pomeron is derived from the structure of the parent hadron. Predictions for diffractive deep inelastic scattering are compared with data.

Pomeron: Beyond the Standard Approach

We discuss the experimental evidence supporting the concept of universality of the rapidity gap probability in soft and hard diffraction, relate the gap probability to hadronic parton densities, and present a phenomenological model of diffraction in which the structure of the Pomeron is derived from the structure of the parent hadron. Predictions for diffractive deep inelastic scattering are compared with data.

Diffraction: Results and Conclusions

We summarize the main features of available experimental results on soft and hard diffraction and draw conclusions about the nature of the pomeron.

Results on Hard Diffractive Production

The results of experiments at hadron colliders probing the structure of the pomeron through hard diffraction are reviewed. Some results on deep inelastic diffractive scattering obtained at HERA are also discussed and placed in perspective. By using a properly normalized pomeron flux factor in single diffraction dissociation, as dictated by unitarity, the pomeron emerges as a combination of valence quark and gluon color singlets in a ratio suggested by asymptopia.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE POMERON

Results of experiments probing the structure of the pomeron at hadron colliders and at HERA are reviewed. By renormalizing the pomeron flux factor in diffraction dissociation as dictated by unitarity, a picture emerges from the data in which the pomeron appears to be made of valence quark and gluon color-singlets in a combination suggested by asymptopia.
