The strong reproducing kernel thesis for Hankel operators and the Garsia norm

Given a reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ and a bounded operator $T$ on $\mathcal H$, we say that $T$ obeys the strong reproducing kernel thesis (SRKT) if $\|T\|=\sup_k\|Tk\|$, where $k$ ranges over the normalized reproducing kernels in $\mathcal H$. Two problems are posed. One of these is to determine which Hankel operators on the Hardy space $H^2$ obey the SRKT. The other concerns the geometry of the unit ball of $BMO$ with respect to the Garsia norm.

Extreme points in quotients of Hardy spaces

In the Hardy spaces $H^1$ and $H^\infty$, there are neat and well-known characterizations of the extreme points of the unit ball. We obtain counterparts of these classical theorems when $H^1$ (resp., $H^\infty$) gets replaced by the quotient space $H^1/E$ (resp., $H^\infty/E$), under certain assumptions on the subspace $E$. In the $H^1$ setting, we also treat the case where the underlying space is taken to be the kernel of a Toeplitz operator.

Carleson-type embeddings with closed range

We characterize the Carleson measures $μ$ on the unit disk for which the image of the Hardy space $H^p$ under the corresponding embedding operator is closed in $L^p(μ)$. In fact, a more general result involving $(p,q)$-Carleson measures is obtained. A similar problem is solved in the setting of Bergman spaces.

Extremal problems in BMO and VMO involving the Garsia norm

Given an $L^2$ function $f$ on the unit circle $\mathbb T$, we put $$Φ_f(z):=\mathcal P(|f|^2)(z)-|\mathcal Pf(z)|^2,\qquad z\in\mathbb D,$$ where $\mathbb D$ is the open unit disk and $\mathcal P$ is the Poisson integral operator. The Garsia norm $\|f\|_G$ is then defined as $\sup_{z\in\mathbb D}Φ_f(z)^{1/2}$, and the space ${\rm BMO}$ is formed by the functions $f\in L^2$ with $\|f\|_G<\infty$. If $\|f\|^2_G=Φ_f(z_0)$ for some point $z_0\in\mathbb D$, then $f$ is said to be a norm-attaining ${\rm BMO}$ function, written as $f\in{\rm BMO}_{\rm na}$. Note that ${\rm BMO}_{\rm na}$ contains ${\rm VMO}$, the space of functions with vanishing mean oscillation. We study, first, the functions $f$ in $L^\infty$ (as well as in $L^\infty\cap{\rm BMO}_{\rm na}$) with the property that $\|f\|_G=\|f\|_\infty$. The analytic case, where $L^\infty$ gets replaced by $H^\infty$, is discussed in more detail. Secondly, we prove that every function $f\in{\rm BMO}_{\rm na}$ with $\|f\|_G=1$ is an extreme point of ${\rm ball}\,({\rm BMO})$, the unit ball of ${\rm BMO}$ with respect to the Garsia norm. This implies that the extreme points of ${\rm ball}\,({\rm VMO})$ are precisely the unit-norm ${\rm VMO}$ functions. As another consequence, we arrive at an amusing "geometric" characterization of inner functions.

Inner functions as strongly extreme points: stability properties

Given a Banach space $\mathcal X$, let $x$ be a point in $\text{ball}(\mathcal X)$, the closed unit ball of $\mathcal X$. One says that $x$ is a strongly extreme point of $\text{ball}(\mathcal X)$ if it has the following property: for every $\varepsilon>0$ there is $δ>0$ such that the inequalities $\|x\pm y\|<1+δ$ imply, for $y\in\mathcal X$, that $\|y\|<\varepsilon$. We are concerned with certain subspaces of $H^\infty$, the space of bounded holomorphic functions on the disk, that arise upon imposing finitely many linear constraints and can be viewed as finite-dimensional perturbations of $H^\infty$. It is well known that the strongly extreme points of $\text{ball}(H^\infty)$ are precisely the inner functions, while the (usual) extreme points of this ball are the unit-norm functions $f\in H^\infty$ with $\log(1-|f|)$ non-integrable over the circle. Here we show that similar characterizations remain valid for our perturbed $H^\infty$-type spaces. Also, we investigate to what extent a non-inner function can differ from a strongly extreme point.

Questions about extreme points

We discuss the geometry of the unit ball -- specifically, the structure of its extreme points (if any) -- in subspaces of $L^1$ and $L^\infty$ on the circle that are formed by functions with prescribed spectral gaps. A similar issue is considered for kernels of Toeplitz operators in $H^\infty$.

Interpolation and duality in spaces of pseudocontinuable functions

Given an inner function $θ$ on the unit disk, let $K^p_θ:=H^p\capθ\bar z\bar{H^p}$ be the associated star-invariant subspace of the Hardy space $H^p$. Also, we put $K_{*θ}:=K^2_θ\cap{\rm BMO}$. Assuming that $B=B_{\mathcal Z}$ is an interpolating Blaschke product with zeros $\mathcal Z=\{z_j\}$, we characterize, for a number of smoothness classes $X$, the sequences of values $\mathcal W=\{w_j\}$ such that the interpolation problem $f\big|_{\mathcal Z}=\mathcal W$ has a solution $f$ in $K^2_B\cap X$. Turning to the case of a general inner function $θ$, we further establish a non-duality relation between $K^1_θ$ and $K_{*θ}$. Namely, we prove that the latter space is properly contained in the dual of the former, unless $θ$ is a finite Blaschke product. From this we derive an amusing non-interpolation result for functions in $K_{*B}$, with $B=B_{\mathcal Z}$ as above.

A Rudin--de Leeuw type theorem for functions with spectral gaps

Our starting point is a theorem of de Leeuw and Rudin that describes the extreme points of the unit ball in the Hardy space $H^1$. We extend this result to subspaces of $H^1$ formed by functions with smaller spectra. More precisely, given a finite set $\mathcal K$ of positive integers, we prove a Rudin--de Leeuw type theorem for the unit ball of $H^1_{\mathcal K}$, the space of functions $f\in H^1$ whose Fourier coefficients $\widehat f(k)$ vanish for all $k\in\mathcal K$.

Nearly outer functions as extreme points in punctured Hardy spaces

The Hardy space $H^1$ consists of the integrable functions $f$ on the unit circle whose Fourier coefficients $\widehat f(k)$ vanish for $k<0$. We are concerned with $H^1$ functions that have some additional (finitely many) holes in the spectrum, so we fix a finite set $\mathcal K$ of positive integers and consider the "punctured" Hardy space $$H^1_{\mathcal K}:=\{f\in H^1:\,\widehat f(k)=0\,\,\,\text{for all }\, k\in\mathcal K\}.$$ We then investigate the geometry of the unit ball in $H^1_{\mathcal K}$. In particular, the extreme points of the ball are identified as those unit-norm functions in $H^1_{\mathcal K}$ which are not too far from being outer (in the appropriate sense). This extends a theorem of de Leeuw and Rudin that deals with the classical $H^1$ and characterizes its extreme points as outer functions. We also discuss exposed points of the unit ball in $H^1_{\mathcal K}$.

An extremal problem for functions annihilated by a Toeplitz operator

For a bounded function $φ$ on the unit circle $\mathbb T$, let $T_φ$ be the associated Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space $H^2$. Assume that the kernel $$K_2(φ):=\{f\in H^2:\,T_φf=0\}$$ is nontrivial. Given a unit-norm function $f$ in $K_2(φ)$, we ask whether an identity of the form $|f|^2=\frac12\left(|f_1|^2+|f_2|^2\right)$ may hold a.e. on $\mathbb T$ for some $f_1,f_2\in K_2(φ)$, both of norm $1$ and such that $|f_1|\ne|f_2|$ on a set of positive measure. We then show that such a decomposition is possible if and only if either $f$ or $\overline{zφf}$ has a nontrivial inner factor. The proof relies on an intrinsic characterization of the moduli of functions in $K_2(φ)$, a result which we also extend to $K_p(φ)$ (the kernel of $T_φ$ in $H^p$) with $1\le p\le\infty$.

Lacunary polynomials in $L^1$: geometry of the unit sphere

Let $Λ$ be a finite set of nonnegative integers, and let $\mathcal P(Λ)$ be the linear hull of the monomials $z^k$ with $k\inΛ$, viewed as a subspace of $L^1$ on the unit circle. We characterize the extreme and exposed points of the unit ball in $\mathcal P(Λ)$.

Quasi-squares of pseudocontinuable functions

For an inner function $θ$ on the unit disk, let $K^p_θ:=H^p\capθ\overline{H^p_0}$ be the associated star-invariant subspace of the Hardy space $H^p$. While the squaring operation $f\mapsto f^2$ maps $H^p$ into $H^{p/2}$, one cannot expect the square $f^2$ of a function $f\in K^p_θ$ to lie in $K^{p/2}_θ$. (Suffice it to note that if $f$ is a polynomial of degree $n$, then $f^2$ has degree $2n$ rather than $n$.) However, we come up with a certain "quasi-squaring" procedure that does not have this defect. As an application, we prove an extrapolation theorem for a class of sublinear operators acting on $K^p_θ$ spaces.

A free interpolation problem for a subspace of $H^\infty$

Given an inner function $θ$, the associated star-invariant subspace $K^\infty_θ$ is formed by the functions $f\in H^\infty$ that annihilate (with respect to the usual pairing) the shift-invariant subspace $θH^1$ of the Hardy space $H^1$. Assuming that $B$ is an interpolating Blaschke product with zeros $\{a_j\}$, we characterize the traces of functions from $K^\infty_B$ on the sequence $\{a_j\}$. The trace space that arises is, in general, non-ideal (i.e., the sequences $\{w_j\}$ belonging to it admit no nice description in terms of the size of $|w_j|$), but we do point out explicit -- and sharp -- size conditions on $|w_j|$ which make it possible to solve the interpolation problem $f(a_j)=w_j$ ($j=1,2,\dots$) with a function $f\in K^\infty_B$.

Interpolating by functions from model subspaces in $H^1$

Given an interpolating Blaschke product $B$ with zeros $\{a_j\}$, we seek to characterize the sequences of values $\{w_j\}$ for which the interpolation problem $$f(a_j)=w_j\qquad (j=1,2,\dots)$$ can be solved with a function $f$ from the model subspace $H^1\cap B\overline{H^1_0}$ of the Hardy space $H^1$.

Factorization and non-factorization theorems for pseudocontinuable functions

Let $θ$ be an inner function on the unit disk, and let $K^p_θ:=H^p\capθ\overline{H^p_0}$ be the associated star-invariant subspace of the Hardy space $H^p$, with $p\ge1$. While a nontrivial function $f\in K^p_θ$ is never divisible by $θ$, it may have a factor $h$ which is "not too different" from $θ$ in the sense that the ratio $h/θ$ (or just the anti-analytic part thereof) is smooth on the circle. In this case, $f$ is shown to have additional integrability and/or smoothness properties, much in the spirit of the Hardy--Littlewood--Sobolev embedding theorem. The appropriate norm estimates are established, and their sharpness is discussed.

Smooth analytic functions and model subspaces

The main themes of this survey are as follows: (a) the canonical (Riesz--Nevanlinna) factorization in various classes of analytic functions on the disk that are smooth up to its boundary, and (b) model subspaces (i.e., invariant subspaces of the backward shift) in the Hardy spaces $H^p$ and in BMOA. It is the interrelationship and a peculiar cross-fertilization between the two topics that we wish to highlight.
