Optical lattices as a tool to study defect-induced superfluidity

We study the superfluid response, the energetic and structural properties of a one-dimensional ultracold Bose gas in an optical lattice of arbitrary strength. We use the Bose-Fermi mapping in the limit of infinitely large repulsive interaction and the diffusion Monte Carlo method in the case of finite interaction. For slightly incommensurate fillings we find a superfluid behavior which is discussed in terms of vacancies and interstitials. It is shown that both the excitation spectrum and static structure factor are different for the cases of microscopic and macroscopic fractions of defects. This system provides a extremely well-controlled model for studying defect-induced superfluidity.

Avalanche of entanglement and correlations at quantum phase transitions

We study the ground-state entanglement in the quantum Ising model with nearest neighbor ferromagnetic coupling $J$ and find a sequential increase of entanglement depth with growing $J$. This entanglement avalanche starts with two-point entanglement, as measured by the concurrence, and continues via the three-tangle and four-tangle, until finally, deep in the ferromagnetic phase for $J=\infty$, arriving at pure $\ell$-partite (GHZ type) entanglement of all $\ell$ spins. Comparison with the two, three, and four-point correlations reveals a similar sequence and shows strong ties to the above entanglement measures for small $J$. However, we also find a partial inversion of the hierarchy, where the four-point correlation exceeds the three- and two-point correlations, well before the critical point is reached. Qualitatively similar behavior is also found for the Bose-Hubbard model, suggesting that this is a general feature of a quantum phase transition. This should have far reaching consequences for approximations starting from a mean-field limit.

One-dimensional Bose gas in optical lattices of arbitrary strength

One-dimensional Bose gas with contact interaction in optical lattices at zero temperature is investigated by means of the exact diffusion Monte Carlo algorithm. The results obtained from the fundamental continuous model are compared with those obtained from the lattice (discrete) Bose-Hubbard model, using exact diagonalization, and from the quantum sine-Gordon model. We map out the complete phase diagram of the continuous model and determine the regions of applicability of the Bose-Hubbard model. Various physical quantities characterizing the systems are calculated and it is demonstrated that the sine-Gordon model used for shallow lattices is inaccurate.

Excitation dynamics in a lattice Bose gas within the time-dependent Gutzwiller mean-field approach

The dynamics of the collective excitations of a lattice Bose gas at zero temperature is systematically investigated using the time-dependent Gutzwiller mean-field approach. The excitation modes are determined within the framework of the linear-response theory as solutions of the generalized Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations valid in the superfluid and Mott-insulator phases at arbitrary values of parameters. The expression for the sound velocity derived in this approach coincides with the hydrodynamic relation. We calculate the transition amplitudes for the excitations in the Bragg scattering process and show that the higher excitation modes give significant contributions. We simulate the dynamics of the density perturbations and show that their propagation velocity in the limit of week perturbation is satisfactorily described by the predictions of the linear-response analysis.
