Multiscalar-torsion Cosmology: Exact and Analytic Solutions from Noether Symmetries

The Noether symmetry analysis is applied in a multi-scalar field cosmological model in teleparallel gravity. In particular, we consider two scalar fields with interaction in scalar-torsion theory. The field equations have a minisuperspace description, and the evolution of the physical variables depends on the potential function that drives the scalar fields' dynamics. With the requirement for the field equations to admit non-trivial Noether point symmetries and the use of the first theorem of Noether, we constraint all the functional forms for the potential. Finally, we apply symmetry vectors and the corresponding conservation laws to determine exact and analytic solutions in multiscalar-torsion cosmology.

Dynamical systems in Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In this work we explore the dynamical system phase space of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in the cosmological minisuperspace. This approach binds the main features of the theory through a system of autonomous differential equations, in the context of a flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetime. We analyze the critical points that feature in this system to assess their stability criteria. The phase space of this form of scalar-tensor gravity is very rich due to the fourth-order contributions of the Gauss-Bonnet invariant together with the second order contribution of the scalar field together with their coupling dynamics. We find additional critical points as compared with previous works in the literature which may be important for understanding the larger evolution of standard background cosmology within this class of gravitational models.

Classification of Teleparallel Horndeski Cosmology via Noether Symmetries

Teleparallel Horndeski theory offers an avenue through which to circumvent the speed constraint of gravitational waves in an efficient manner. However, this provides an even larger plethora of models due to the increase in action terms. In this work we explore these models in the context of cosmological systems. Using Noether point symmetries, we classify the dynamical systems that emerge from Teleparallel Horndeski cosmologies. This approach is very effective at selecting specific models in the general class of second-order Teleparallel scalar-tensor theories, as well as for deriving exact solutions within a cosmological context. By iterating through the Lagrangians selected through the Noether symmetries, we solve for a number of cosmological systems which provides new cosmological systems to be studied.

Perturbations in Non-Flat Cosmology for $f(T)$ gravity

The study of cosmological perturbation theory in $f(T)$ gravity is a topic of great interest in teleparallel gravity since this is one of the simplest generalizations of the theory that modifies the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity. In this work, we explore the possibility of a non-flat FLRW background solution and perform perturbations for positively as well as negatively curved spatial geometries, together with a comparison to the flat case. We determine the generalized behaviour of the perturbative modes for this non-flat FLRW setting for arbitrary $f(T)$ models, when the most general homogeneous and isotropic background tetrads are used. We also identify propagating modes in this setup, and relate this with the case of a flat cosmology.

Gravitational Wave Propagation and Polarizations in the Teleparallel analog of Horndeski Gravity

Gravitational waves (GWs) have opened a new window on fundamental physics in a number of important ways. The next generation of GW detectors may reveal more information about the polarization structure of GWs. Additionally, there is growing interest in theories of gravity beyond GR. One such theory which remains viable within the context of recent measurements of the speed of propagation of GWs is the teleparallel analogue of Horndeski gravity. In this work, we explore the polarization structure of this newly proposed formulation of Horndeski theory. In curvature-based gravity, Horndeski theory is almost synonymous with extensions to GR since it spans a large portion of these possible extensions. We perform this calculation by taking perturbations about a Minkowski background and consider which mode propagates. The result is that the polarization structure depends on the choice of model parameters in the teleparallel Horndeski Lagrangian with a maximum of seven propagating degrees of freedom. While the curvature-based Horndeski results follows as a particular limit within this setup, we find a much richer structure of both massive and massless cases which produce scalar--vector--tensor propagating degrees of freedom. We also find that the GW polarization that emerges from the teleparallel analogue of Horndeski gravity results in analogous massive and massless modes which take on at most four polarizations in the massless sector and two scalar ones in the massive sector. In none of the cases do we find vector polarizations.

Post-Newtonian limit of Teleparallel Horndeski gravity

We consider the newly proposed Bahamonde-Dialektopoulos-Levi Said (BDLS) theory, that is the Horndeski analog in the teleparallel framework and thus contains a non-minimally coupled scalar field, including higher order derivatives, that leads however to second order field equations both for the tetrad and the scalar field. This theory was mostly constructed to revive those models that were severely constrained in the scalar-tensor version of the theory from the GW170817, but includes also much richer phenomenology because of the nature of the torsion tensor. For this theory we determine the parametrized post-Newtonian limit, calculate the full set of post-Newtonian parameters and highlight some special cases.

Primordial black holes in a dimensionally oxidizing Universe

The spontaneous creation of primordial black holes in a violently expanding Universe is a well studied phenomenon. Based on quantum gravity arguments, it has been conjectured that the early Universe might have undergone a lower dimensional phase before relaxing to the current $(3 + 1)$ dimensional state. In this article we combine the above phenomena: we calculate the pair creation rates of black holes nucleated in an expanding Universe, by assuming a dimensional evolution, we term ``oxidation'', from $(1 + 1)$ to $(2 + 1)$ and finally to $(3 + 1)$ dimensions. Our investigation is based on the no boundary proposal that allows for the construction of the required gravitational instantons. If, on the one hand, the existence of a dilaton non-minimally coupled to the metric is necessary for black holes to exist in the $(1 + 1)$ phase, it becomes, on the other hand, trivial in $(2 + 1)$ dimensions. Nevertheless, the dilaton might survive the oxidation and be incorporated in a modified theory of gravity in $(3 + 1)$ dimensions: by assuming that our Universe, in its current state, originates from a lower-dimensional oxidation, one might be led to consider the pair creation rate in a sub-class of the Horndeski action. Our findings for this case show that, for specific values of the Galileon coupling to the metric, the rate can be unsuppressed. This would imply the possibility of compelling parameter bounds for non-Einstein theories of gravity by using the spontaneous black hole creation.

Reviving Horndeski Theory using Teleparallel Gravity after GW170817

Horndeski gravity was highly constrained from the recent gravitational wave observations by the LIGO Collaboration down to $|c_{g}/c-1|\gtrsim 10^{-15}$. In this Letter we study the tensorial perturbations in a flat cosmological background for an analogue version of Horndenki gravity which is based in Teleparallel Gravity constructed from a flat manifold with a nonvanishing torsion tensor. It is found that in this approach, one can construct a more general Horndeski theory satisfying $c_T=c_g/c=1$ without eliminating the coupling functions $G_5(ϕ,X)$ and $G_4(ϕ,X)$ that were highly constrained in standard Horndeski theory. Hence, in the Teleparallel approach one is able to restore these terms, creating an interesting way to revive Horndeski gravity.

Higher dimensional static and spherically symmetric solutions in extended Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We study a theory of gravity of the form $f(\mathcal{G})$ where $\mathcal{G}$ is the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant without considering the standard Einstein-Hilbert term as common in the literature, in arbitrary $(d+1)$ dimensions. The approach is motivated by the fact that, in particular conditions, the Ricci curvature scalar can be easily recovered and then a pure $f(\cal G)$ gravity can be considered a further generalization of General Relativity like $f(R)$ gravity. Searching for Noether symmetries, we specify the functional forms invariant under point transformations in a static and spherically symmetric spacetime and, with the help of these symmetries, we find exact solutions showing that Gauss-Bonnet gravity is significant without assuming the Ricci scalar in the action.

Can Horndeski Theory be recast using Teleparallel Gravity?

Horndeski gravity is the most general scalar tensor theory, with a single scalar field, leading to second order field equations and after the GW170817 it has been severely constrained. In this paper, we study the analogue of Horndeski's theory in the teleparallel gravity framework were gravity is mediated through torsion instead of curvature. We show that, even though, many terms are the same as in the curvature case, we have much richer phenomenology in the teleparallel setting because of the nature of the torsion tensor. Moreover, Teleparallel Horndenski contains the standard Horndenski gravity as a subcase and also contains many modified Teleparallel theories considered in the past, such as $f(T)$ gravity or Teleparallel Dark energy. Thus, due to the appearing of a new term in the Lagrangian, this theory can explain dark energy without a cosmological constant, may describe a crossing of the phantom barrier, explain inflation and also solve the tension for $H_0$, making it a good candidate for a correct modified theory of gravity.

Non-Linear Obstructions for Consistent New General Relativity

We revisit the field content and consistency of the New General Relativity family of theories. These theories are constructed in a geometrical framework with a flat and metric-compatible connection, so the affine structure is entirely determined by the torsion. The action is given by a local and parity-preserving quadratic form of the torsion with three free parameters. It is well-known that a special choice of parameters gives an equivalent to General Relativity and that the spectrum of the general linear theory around Minkowski contains an additional 2-form field. It has been suggested that the viability of these theories at linear order requires the 2-form field to feature a gauge symmetry so that it describes a massless Kalb-Ramond field. In this work we revisit these previous results and compute the cubic interactions. We also obtain the decoupling limit of the theories and show that the required gauge symmetry for the 2-form at linear order cannot be extended to higher orders. This signals towards a pathological behaviour of these theories and singles out the equivalent of General Relativity as the only consistent New General Relativity theory with a stable Minkowski background that includes gravity.

Noether symmetries in Symmetric Teleparallel Cosmology

We consider a general theory of all possible quadratic, first-order derivative terms of the non-metricity tensor in the framework of Symmetric Teleparallel Geometry. We apply the Noether Symmetry Approach to classify those models that are invariant under point transformations in a cosmological background and we use the symmetries of these models to reduce the dynamics of the system in order to find analytical solutions.

Noether Symmetries as a geometric criterion to select theories of gravity

We review the {\it Noether Symmetry Approach} as a geometric criterion to select theories of gravity. Specifically, we deal with Noether Symmetries to solve the field equations of given gravity theories. The method allows to find out exact solutions, but also to constrain arbitrary functions in the action. Specific cosmological models are taken into account.

Cosmological production of black holes: a way to constrain alternative theories of gravity

Primordial black holes are considered to be pair created quantum-mechanically during inflation. In the context of General Relativity (GR), it has been shown that the pair creation rate is exponentially decreasing during inflation. Specifically, tiny black holes are favored in the early universe, but they can grow with the horizon scale, as inflation approaches its end. At the same time, cosmological, and not only, shortcomings of GR have triggered the pursuit for a new, alternative theory of gravity. In this paper, by using probability amplitudes from the No Boundary Proposal (NBP), we argue that any alternative gravity should have a black hole creation rate similar to that of GR; that is, in the early universe the creation of small black holes is in favor, while in the late universe larger black holes are being exponentially suppressed. As an example, we apply this argument in $f(R)$-theories of gravity and derive a general formula for the rate in any $f(R)$-theory with constant curvature. Finally, we consider well known $f(R)$-models and using this formula we put constraints in their free parameters.

Classification of the Horndeski cosmologies via Noether Symmetries

Adopting Noether point symmetries, we classify and integrate dynamical systems coming from Horndeski cosmologies. The method is particularly effective both to select the form of Horndeski models and to derive exact cosmological solutions. Starting from the Lagrangians selected by the Noether symmetries, it is possible to derive several modified theories of gravity like $f(R)$ gravity, Brans-Dicke gravity, string inspired gravity and so on. In any case, exact solutions are found out.

Maximum turnaround radius in $f(R)$ gravity

The accelerating behavior of cosmic fluid opposes to the gravitational attraction, at present epoch, whereas standard gravity is dominant at small scales. As a consequence, there exists a \emph{point} where the effects are counterbalanced, dubbed \emph{turnaround radius}, $r_{\text{ta}}$. By construction, it provides a bound on maximum structure sizes of the observed universe. Once an upper bound on $r_{\text{ta}}$ is provided, i.e. $R_{\text{TA,max}}$, one can check whether cosmological models guarantee structure formation. Here, we focus on $f(R)$ gravity, without imposing \emph{a priori} the form of $f(R)$. We thus provide an analytic expression for the turnaround radius in the framework of $f(R)$ models. To figure this out, we compute the turnaround radius in two distinct cases: 1) under the hypothesis of static and spherically symmetric space-time, and 2) by using the cosmological perturbation theory. We thus find a criterion to enable large scale structures to be stable in $f(R)$ models, circumscribing the class of $f(R)$ theories as suitable alternative to dark energy. In particular, we get that for constant curvature, the viability condition becomes $R_{\text{dS}}f'(R_{\text{dS}}) \leq 5.48 Λ\Rightarrow f'(R_{\text{dS}}) \leq 1.37$, with $Λ$ and $R_{\text{dS}}$ respectively the observed cosmological constant and the Ricci curvature. This prescription rules out models which do not pass the aforementioned $R_{\text{TA,max}}$ limit.

Constraining Generalized Non-local Cosmology from Noether Symmetries

We study a generalized nonlocal theory of gravity which, in specific limits, can become either the curvature non-local or teleparallel non-local theory. Using the Noether Symmetry Approach, we find that the coupling functions coming from the non-local terms are constrained to be either exponential or linear in form. It is well known that in some non-local theories, a certain kind of exponential non-local couplings are needed in order to achieve a renormalizable theory. In this paper, we explicitly show that this kind of coupling does not need to by introduced by hand, instead, it appears naturally from the symmetries of the Lagrangian in flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology. Finally, we find de-Sitter and power law cosmological solutions for different nonlocal theories. The symmetries for the generalized non-local theory is also found and some cosmological solutions are also achieved under the full theory.

The maximum sizes of large scale structures in alternative theories of gravity

The maximum size of a cosmic structure is given by the maximum turnaround radius -- the scale where the attraction due to its mass is balanced by the repulsion due to dark energy. We derive generic formulae for the estimation of the maximum turnaround radius in any theory of gravity obeying the Einstein equivalence principle, in two situations: on a spherically symmetric spacetime and on a perturbed Friedman-Robertson-Walker spacetime. We show that the two formulae agree. As an application of our formula, we calculate the maximum turnaround radius in the case of the Brans-Dicke theory of gravity. We find that for this theory, such maximum sizes always lie above the \LCDM value, by a factor $1 + \frac{1}{3ω}$, where $ω\gg 1$ is the Brans-Dicke parameter, implying consistency of the theory with current data.
