A new exact rotating spacetime in vacuum: The Kerr--Levi-Civita Spacetime

We construct a new rotating solution of Einstein's theory in vacuum by exploiting the Lie point symmetries of the field equations in the complex potential formalism of Ernst. In particular, we perform a discrete symmetry transformation, known as inversion, of the gravitational potential associated with the Kerr metric. The resulting metric describes a rotating generalization of the Schwarzschild--Levi-Civita spacetime, and we refer to it as the Kerr--Levi-Civita metric. We study the key geometric features of this novel spacetime, which turns out to be free of curvature singularities, topological defects, and closed timelike curves. These attractive properties are also common to the extremal black hole and the super-spinning case. The solution is algebraically general (Petrov-type I), and its horizons lie at the horizon radii of the Kerr black hole. The ergoregions, however, are strongly influenced by the Levi-Civita-like asymptotic structure, producing an effect akin to the magnetized Kerr--Newman and swirling solutions. Interestingly, while its static counterpart permits a Kerr--Schild representation, the Kerr--Levi-Civita metric does not admit such a formulation.

Electromagnetized black holes and swirling backgrounds in nonlinear electrodynamics: The ModMax case

This work focuses on constructing electromagnetized black holes and vortex-like backgrounds within the framework of the ModMax theory--the unique nonlinear extension of Maxwell's theory that preserves conformal symmetry and electromagnetic duality invariance. We begin by constructing the Melvin-Bonnor electromagnetic universe in ModMax through a limiting procedure that connects the spacetime of two charged accelerating black holes with that of a gravitating homogeneous electromagnetic field. Building on this result, we proceed to construct the Schwarzschild and C-metric Melvin-Bonnor black holes within the ModMax theory, representing the first black hole solutions embedded in an electromagnetic universe in the context of nonlinear electrodynamics. While the characteristics of the Melvin-Bonnor spacetime and some of its black hole extensions have been widely examined, we demonstrate for the first time that the Schwarzschild-Melvin-Bonnor configuration exhibits an unusual Kerr-Schild representation. Following this direction, we also unveil a novel Kerr-Schild construction for the spacetime of two accelerating black holes, drawing on the intrinsic relationship between the Melvin-Bonnor spacetime and the C-metric. Finally, we expand the spectrum of exact gravitational solutions within Einstein-ModMax theory by constructing a vortex-like background that coexists with the Melvin-Bonnor universe. In this process, the Taub-NUT spacetime in ModMax has played a crucial role. We present this Taub-NUT solution in a different gauge that facilitates the comparison with the Melvin-Bonnor-Swirling case.

Plebanśki-Demiański à la Ehlers-Harrison: Exact Rotating and Accelerating Type I Black Holes

Recently, it was shown that type D black holes, encompassed in the large Plebanśki--Demiański (PD) family, exhibit a wide class of algebraically general generalizations via the application of Ehlers and Harrison transformations. In this work, we first discuss some mathematical details behind the composition of such transformations, and next, we introduce a qualitative picture of the most general type I generalization of the PD family, dubbed ``Enhanced Plebanśki--Demiański'' spacetime. We provide the exact form of the solution in the original PD coordinates, obtained via the simultaneous action of an Ehlers and a Harrison transformation on the vacuum PD geometry. In order to make the physics more transparent, we explicitly construct a rotating and accelerating black hole which further has NUT parameter and electric charges, both of them entering, not only the event horizon, but the Rindler horizon as well. This solution is directly obtained in the ``physical'' coordinates recently proposed by Podolský and Vrátny. Finally, a pedagogical appendix is thoughtfully included, providing readers with a user-friendly step-by-step guide to the Ernst formalism, in an attempt to address and resolve various minor inconsistencies frequently appearing in the relevant literature.

Into the MAG-verse or: Cosmology of the Complete Quadratic Metric-Affine Gravity

We study the cosmology of the complete quadratic (in torsion and nonmetricity) metric-affine gravity. Namely, we add to the scalar-curvature gravitational Lagrangian, the 17 independent quadratic (parity-even and parity-odd) torsion and nonmetricity invariants. Sticking to a homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime and assuming a perfect hyperfluid source, we explore the new effects that torsion and nonmetricity bring into play. It is shown that the inclusion of these invariants offers rich phenomenology. In particular, some well-known examples of exotic matter like cosmic strings, domain walls, stiff matter, etc., emerge quite naturally as manifestations of the fluid's intrinsic structure (hypermomentum). By studying the extended Friedmann equations in the complete quadratic theory and isolating the various parts of the hypermomentum, we find a plethora of solutions with interesting features.

Mixing "Magnetic'' and "Electric'' Ehlers--Harrison transformations: The Electromagnetic Swirling Spacetime and Novel Type I Backgrounds

In this paper, we obtain a complete list of stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes, generated from a Minkowski spacetime using the Ernst technique. We do so by operating on the associated seed potentials with a composition of Ehlers and Harrison transformations. In particular, assigning an additional ``electric'' or ``magnetic'' tag to the transformations, we investigate the new spacetimes obtained either via a composition of magnetic Ehlers and Harrison transformations (first part) or via a magnetic-electric combination (second part). In the first part, the resulting type D spacetime, dubbed electromagnetic swirling universe, features key properties, separately found in swirling and (Bonnor--)Melvin spacetimes, the latter recovered in appropriate limits. A detailed analysis of the geometry is included, and subtle issues are addressed. A detailed proof that the spacetime belongs to the Kundt family, is included, and a notable relation to the planar-Reissner-Nordström-NUT black hole is also meticulously worked out. This relation is further exploited to reverse-engineer the form of the solution in the presence of a nontrivial cosmological constant. A Schwarzschild black hole embedded into the new background is also discussed. In the second part, we present four novel stationary and axisymmetric asymptotically nonflat type I spacetimes, which are naively expected to be extensions of the Melvin or swirling solution including a NUT parameter or electromagnetic charges. We actually find that they are, under conditions, free of curvature and topological singularities, with the physical meaning of the electric transformation parameters in these backgrounds requiring further investigation.

Biconnection Gravity as a Statistical Manifold

We formulate a bi-Connection Theory of Gravity whose Gravitational action consists of a recently defined mutual curvature scalar. Namely, we build a gravitational theory consisting of one metric and two affine connections, in a Metric-Affine Gravity setup. Consequently, coupling the two connections on an equal footing with matter, we show that the geometry of the resulting theory is, quite intriguingly, that of Statistical Manifold. This ultimately indicates a remarkable mathematical correspondence between Gravity and Information Geometry.

Exact rotating wormholes via Ehlers transformations

In this paper, we construct exact rotating wormholes using Ehlers solution-generating technique. This is based on the Ernst description of four-dimensional, stationary, and axially symmetric solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell theory. We adopt the static Barceló-Visser wormhole derived from the Einstein-Maxwell-conformal-scalar theory as a seed, and demonstrate, through the Ernst approach, how to construct two novel geometries of rotating wormholes. These geometries correspond to the Barceló-Visser wormhole embedded within a rotating and a magnetic background, respectively. In the first case, the rotation is a result of a dragging force (due to the rotating background) acting on the initial static wormhole, while in the second case it is caused by the electromagnetic interaction between the electric charge of the static wormhole and the external magnetic field. We conduct a comprehensive analysis of the geometric properties of these configurations, and examine the new features introduced by rotation, such as the emergence of ergoregions. Recent evidence suggests that incorporating slow rotation can stabilise wormholes, rendering these exact, fully rotating solutions particularly appealing.

Describing metric-affine theories anew: alternative frameworks, examples and solutions

In this work we describe metric-affine theories anew by making a change of field variables. A series of equivalent frameworks is presented and identifications are worked out in detail. The advantage of applying the new frameworks is that any MAG theory can be handled as a Riemannian theory with additional fields. We study the Hilbert-Palatini action using the new field variables and disclose interesting symmetries under $SO$ transformations in field space. Then, we use solvable and suitable Riemannian theories as seed models for solvable MAG theories, restricting ourselves to three examples. We present a black hole solution with torsion and non-metricity which under a certain tuning acquires a regular core. A de Sitter universe with the expansion powered by 3-form torsion, is also reported.

Exploring the black hole spectrum of axionic Horndeski theory

We provide a ``user-friendly'' algorithm to systematically and rapidly obtain exact planar black hole solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell theory deformed by the most general shift- and reflection-symmetric Horndeski sector where the usual Galileon is replaced by a tuple of scalars with profiles linear in the coordinates of the transverse manifold. Under precise assumptions, these axion backgrounds break the translational invariance of the system, causing momentum dissipation in the holographically dual field theory. The success of the method relies on the simple realization that the bulk equations of motion become more tractable when written in terms of the axions kinetic terms, instead of the radial coordinate. Showcasing this particularly efficient recipe, we derive novel asymptotically AdS black holes, and show that their extremal counterparts always flow to an $\mathrm{AdS}_2\times \mathbb{R}^2$ infrared fixed point. Additionally, we report an interesting family of new asymptotically Lifshitz black hole solutions with $z>1$. Finally, we discuss the DC transport properties of the dual relativistic field theories in view of possible applications to condensed matter systems.

Quartic Horndeski, planar black holes, holographic aspects and universal bounds

In this work, we consider a specific shift-invariant quartic Horndeski model, deriving new planar black hole solutions with axionic hair. We explore these solutions in terms of their horizon structure and their thermodynamic properties. We use the gauge/gravity dictionary to derive the DC transport coefficients of the holographic dual with the aim of investigating how the new deformation affects the universality of some renown bound proposals. Although most of them are found to hold true, we nevertheless find a highly interesting parametric violation of the heat conductivity-to-temperature lower bound which acquires a dependence on both the scale and the coupling. Finally, using a perturbative approach, a more brutal violation of the viscocity-to-entropy ratio is demonstrated.

Quasitopological electromagnetism and black holes

In this paper we extend the quasitopological electromagnetism, recently introduced by H.-S. Liu et al. [arXiv:1907.10876], to arbitrary dimensions by introducing a fundamental $p$-form field. This allows us to construct new dyonic black hole solutions in odd dimensions, as well as regular $D$-dimensional black holes and solitons. The three-dimensional system consists of a Maxwell field interacting with a scalar field, leading to a deformation of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole. We present the general formulas defining the black hole solutions in arbitrary dimensions in Lovelock theory and explore the thermal properties of the asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in the gravitational framework of general relativity. In five dimensions, the latter black holes possess a rich phase space structure in the canonical ensemble, giving rise to as many as five different black hole phases at a fixed temperature, for a given range of the parameters.
