Consequences of Symmetry Fractionalization without 1-Form Global Symmetries

We study the fractionalization of 0-form global symmetries on line operators in theories without 1-form global symmetries. The projective transformation properties of line operators are renormalization group invariant, and we derive constraints which are similar to the consequences of exact 1-form symmetries. For instance, symmetry fractionalization can lead to exact selection rules for line operators in twisted sectors, and in theories with 't Hooft anomalies involving the fractionalization class, these selection rules can further imply that certain twisted sectors have exact finite-volume vacuum degeneracies. Along the way, we define topological operators on open codimension-1 manifolds, which we call `disk operators', that provide a convenient way of encoding the projective action of 0-form symmetries on lines. In addition, we discuss the possible ways symmetry fractionalization can be matched along renormalization group flows.

Symmetry Operators and Gravity

We argue that topological operators for continuous symmetries written in terms of currents need regularization, which effectively gives them a small but finite width. The regulated operator is a finite tension object which fluctuates. In the zero-width limit these fluctuations freeze, recovering the properties of a topological operator. When gravity is turned on, the zero-width limit becomes ill-defined, thereby prohibiting the existence of topological operators.

Locality and Conserved Charges in $T\overline{T}$-Deformed CFTs

We investigate the locality properties of $T \overline T$-deformed CFTs within perturbation theory. Up to third order in the deformation parameter, we find a Hamiltonian operator which solves the flow equation, reproduces the Zamolodchikov energy spectrum, and is consistent with quasi-locality of the theory. This Hamiltonian includes terms proportional to the central charge which have not appeared before and which are necessary to reproduce the correct spectrum. We show that the Hamiltonian is not uniquely defined since it contains free parameters, starting at second order, which do not spoil the above properties. We then use it to determine the full conserved stress tensor. In our approach, the KdV charges are automatically conserved to all orders but are not a priori local. Nevertheless, we show that they can be made local to first order. Our techniques allow us to further comment on the space of Hamiltonians constructed from products of KdV charges which also flow to local charges in the deformed theory in the IR.

Non-invertible defects on the worldsheet

We consider codimension-one defects in the theory of $d$ compact scalars on a two-dimensional worldsheet, acting linearly by mixing the scalars and their duals. By requiring that the defects are topological, we find that they correspond to a non-Abelian zero-form symmetry acting on the fields as elements of $\text{O}(d;\mathbb{R}) \times \text{O}(d;\mathbb{R})$, and on momentum and winding charges as elements of $\text{O}(d,d;\mathbb{R})$. When the latter action is rational, we prove that it can be realized by combining gauging of non-anomalous discrete subgroups of the momentum and winding $\text{U}(1)$ symmetries, and elements of the $\text{O}(d,d;\mathbb{Z})$ duality group, such that the couplings of the theory are left invariant. Generically, these defects map local operators into non-genuine operators attached to lines, thus corresponding to a non-invertible symmetry. We confirm our results within a Lagrangian description of the non-invertible topological defects associated to the $\text{O}(d,d;\mathbb{Q})$ action on charges, giving a natural explanation of the rationality conditions. Finally, we apply our findings to toroidal compactifications of bosonic string theory. In the simplest non-trivial case, we discuss the selection rules of these non-invertible symmetries, verifying explicitly that they are satisfied on a worldsheet of higher genus.

A note on entanglement entropy and topological defects in symmetric orbifold CFTs

In this brief note we calculate the entanglement entropy in $M^{\otimes N}/S_N$ symmetric orbifold CFTs in the presence of topological defects, which were recently constructed in \cite{Gutperle:2024vyp,Knighton:2024noc}. We consider both universal defects which realize $Rep(S_N)$ non-invertible symmetry and non-universal defects. We calculate the sub-leading defect entropy/g-factor for defects at the boundary entangling surface as well as inside it.

Non-invertible symmetries in $S_N$ orbifold CFTs and holography

We study non-invertible defects in two-dimensional $S_N$ orbifold CFTs. We construct universal defects which do not depend on the details of the seed CFT and hence exist in any orbifold CFT. Additionally, we investigate non-universal defects arising from the topological defects of the seed CFT. We argue that there exist universal defects that are non-trivial in the large-$N$ limit, making them relevant for the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence. We then focus on AdS$_3\times$S$^3\times \mathcal M_4$ with one unit of NS-NS flux and propose an explicit realization of these defects on the worldsheet.

Exploring Non-Invertible Symmetries in Free Theories

Symmetries corresponding to local transformations of the fundamental fields that leave the action invariant give rise to (invertible) topological defects, which obey group-like fusion rules. One can construct more general (codimension-one) topological defects by specifying a map between gauge-invariant operators from one side of the defect and such operators on the other side. In this work, we apply such construction to Maxwell theory in four dimensions and to the free compact scalar theory in two dimensions. In the case of Maxwell theory, we show that a topological defect that mixes the field strength $F$ and its Hodge dual $\star F$ can be at most an $SO(2)$ rotation. For rational values of the bulk coupling and the $θ$-angle we find an explicit defect Lagrangian that realizes values of the $SO(2)$ angle $φ$ such that $\cos φ$ is also rational. We further determine the action of such defects on Wilson and 't Hooft lines and show that they are in general non-invertible. We repeat the analysis for the free compact scalar $ϕ$ in two dimensions. In this case we find only four discrete maps: the trivial one, a $Z_2$ map $dϕ\rightarrow -dϕ$, a $\mathcal{T}$-duality-like map $dϕ\rightarrow i \star dϕ$, and the product of the last two.

Higher Gauging and Non-invertible Condensation Defects

We discuss invertible and non-invertible topological condensation defects arising from gauging a discrete higher-form symmetry on a higher codimensional manifold in spacetime, which we define as higher gauging. A $q$-form symmetry is called $p$-gaugeable if it can be gauged on a codimension-$p$ manifold in spacetime. We focus on 1-gaugeable 1-form symmetries in general 2+1d QFT, and gauge them on a surface in spacetime. The universal fusion rules of the resulting invertible and non-invertible condensation surfaces are determined. In the special case of 2+1d TQFT, every (invertible and non-invertible) 0-form global symmetry, including the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ electromagnetic symmetry of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory, is realized from higher gauging. We further compute the fusion rules between the surfaces, the bulk lines, and lines that only live on the surfaces, determining some of the most basic data for the underlying fusion 2-category. We emphasize that the fusion "coefficients" in these non-invertible fusion rules are generally not numbers, but rather 1+1d TQFTs. Finally, we discuss examples of non-invertible symmetries in non-topological 2+1d QFTs such as the free $U(1)$ Maxwell theory and QED.

Refining the Cutoff 3d Gravity / $T\bar{T}$ Correspondence

Pure gravity in AdS$_3$ is a theory of boundary excitations, most simply expressed as a constrained free scalar with an improved stress tensor that is needed to match the Brown--Henneaux central charge. Excising a finite part of AdS gives rise to a static gauge Nambu--Goto action for the boundary graviton. We show that this is the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of the infinite volume theory, as the effect of the improvement term on the deformed action can be absorbed into a field redefinition. The classical gravitational stress tensor is reproduced order by order by the $T\bar{T}$ trace equation. We calculate the finite volume energy spectrum in static gauge and find that the trace equation imposes sufficient constraints on the ordering ambiguities to guarantee agreement with the light-cone gauge prediction. The correlation functions, however, are not completely fixed by the trace equation. We show how both the gravitational action and the $T\bar{T}$ deformation allow for finite improvement terms, and we match these to the undetermined total derivative terms in Zamolodchikov's point splitting definition of the $T\bar{T}$ operator.

Symmetries and Strings of Adjoint QCD${}_2$

We revisit the symmetries of massless two-dimensional adjoint QCD with gauge group $SU(N)$. The dynamics is not sufficiently constrained by the ordinary symmetries and anomalies. Here we show that the theory in fact admits $\sim 2^{2N}$ non-invertible symmetries which severely constrain the possible infrared phases and massive excitations. We prove that for all $N$ these new symmetries enforce deconfinement of the fundamental quark. When the adjoint quark has a small mass, $m\ll g_\mathrm{YM}$, the theory confines and the non-invertible symmetries are softly broken. We use them to compute analytically the $k$-string tension for $N\leq 5$. Our results suggest that the $k$-string tension, $T_k$, is $T_k\sim |m| \sin(πk /N)$ for all $N$. We also consider the dynamics of adjoint QCD deformed by symmetric quartic fermion interactions. These operators are not generated by the RG flow due to the non-invertible symmetries, thus violating the ordinary notion of naturalness. We conjecture partial confinement for the deformed theory by these four-fermion interactions, and prove it for $SU(N\leq5)$ gauge theory. Comparing the topological phases at zero and large mass, we find that a massless particle ought to appear on the string for some intermediate nonzero mass, consistent with an emergent supersymmetry at nonzero mass. We also study the possible infrared phases of adjoint QCD allowed by the non-invertible symmetries, which we are able to do exhaustively for small values of $N$. The paper contains detailed reviews of ideas from fusion category theory that are essential for the results we prove.

Line Operators of Gauge Theories on Non-Spin Manifolds

We study four-dimensional gauge theories on oriented and non-spin spacetime manifolds. On such manifolds, each line operator arises only either as a boson or a fermion. Based on physical arguments, a method of systematically assigning spin labels to line operators is proposed, and several consistency checks are performed. This is used to classify all possible sets of allowed line operators -- including their spins -- for gauge theories with simple Lie algebras. The Lagrangian descriptions of the theories with these sets of allowed line operators are given. Finally, the one-form symmetries of these theories are studied by coupling to background gauge fields, and their 't Hooft anomalies are computed.

3D Dualities and Supersymmetry Enhancement from Domain Walls

We test recently proposed IR dualities and supersymmetry enhancement by studying the supersymmetry on domain walls. In the $SU(3)$ Wess-Zumino model studied in arXiv:1804.02018 and arXiv:1804.05707, we show that domain walls exhibit supersymmetry enhancement. This model was conjectured to be dual to an $\mathcal{N}=2$ abelian gauge theory. We show that domain walls on the gauge theory side are consistent with the proposed duality, as they are described by the same effective theory on the wall. In arXiv:1808.04173, a third model was conjectured to be dual to the same IR theory. We study the phases and domain walls of this model and we show that they also agree. We then consider the analogous $SU(5)$ Wess-Zumino model, and study its mass deformations and phases. We argue that even though one might expect supersymmetry enhancement in this model as well, the analysis of its domain walls shows that there is none. Finally, we study the $\mathcal{N}=2$ model in arXiv:1806.07714 which was conjectured to have $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry in the IR. In this case we don't see the supersymmetry enhancement on the domain wall; however, we argue that half-BPS domain walls of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ algebra are quarter-BPS of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ algebra. This is then in agreement with the conjectured enhancement, even though it does not show that it takes place.

$\mathbf{AdS_3\times S^3}$ Tree-Level Correlators: Hidden Six-Dimensional Conformal Symmetry

We revisit the calculation of holographic correlators in $AdS_3$. We develop new methods to evaluate exchange Witten diagrams, resolving some technical difficulties that prevent a straightforward application of the methods used in higher dimensions. We perform detailed calculations in the $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times K3$ background. We find strong evidence that four-point tree-level correlators of KK modes of the tensor multiplets enjoy a hidden 6d conformal symmetry. The correlators can all be packaged into a single generating function, related to the 6d flat space superamplitude. This generalizes an analogous structure found in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ supergravity.

Comments on the $S_N$ orbifold CFT in the large $N$-limit

We elaborate on various aspects of the conformal field theory of the symmetric orbifold. We collect various results that have appeared in the literature, and we present a coherent picture of the operator content of this CFT, relying on the orbifold extension of the Virasoro algebra. We then focus on the large $N$-limit of this theory, discuss the OPE of two twist operators, and find various selection rules. We review how to calculate four-point functions of twist operators, and we write down the most general four-point function in the covering space for large $N$. We show that it depends on some functions that obey a set of algebraic equations, that resemble the scattering equations. Finally, we provide a recipe on how to calculate correlation functions with insertions of the orbifold Virasoro generators.

Leading Order Anomalous Dimensions at the Wilson-Fisher Fixed Point from CFT

In this paper we consider $ϕ^4$ theory in $4-ε$ dimensions at the Wilson-Fisher fixed point where the theory becomes conformal. We extend the method in arXiv:1505.00963 for calculating the leading order term in the anomalous dimensions of some operators with spin. This method involves mostly symmetry arguments and reduces the process for calculating anomalous dimensions to some Wick contractions in the corresponding free theory. We apply this method in the case of operators with two and three fields whose twist is equal to the number of fields they contain, and we rederive known results for their anomalous dimensions. We also calculate the leading term in the anomalous dimensions of operators with spin two and three. In addition, we find expressions for the primary operators of the free theory, for arbitrary spin and number of fields, whose twist remains equal to the number of fields.
