On regular subgroups of $\mathsf{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$

Motivated by a question of M. Kapovich, we show that the $\mathbb{Z}^2$ subgroups of $\mathsf{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ that are regular in the language of Kapovich--Leeb--Porti, or divergent in the sense of Guichard--Wienhard, are precisely the lattices in minimal horospherical subgroups. This rules out any relative Anosov subgroups of $\mathsf{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ that are not in fact Gromov-hyperbolic. By work of Oh, it also follows that a Zariski-dense discrete subgroup $Γ$ of $\mathsf{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ contains a regular $\mathbb{Z}^2$ if and only if $Γ$ is commensurable to a conjugate of $\mathsf{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$. In particular, a Zariski-dense regular subgroup of $\mathsf{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ contains no $\mathbb{Z}^2$ subgroups.

On projective Anosov subgroups of symplectic groups

We prove that a word hyperbolic group whose Gromov boundary properly contains a $2$-sphere cannot admit a projective Anosov representation into $\mathsf{Sp}_{2m}(\mathbb{C})$, $m\in \mathbb{N}$. We also prove that a word hyperbolic group which admits a projective Anosov representation into $\mathsf{Sp}_{2m}(\mathbb{R})$ is virtually a free group or virtually a surface group, a result established indepedently by Dey-Greenberg-Riestenberg.

Fiber products of rank 1 superrigid lattices and quasi-isometric embeddings

Let $Δ$ be a cocompact lattice in $\mathsf{Sp}(m,1)$, $m \geq 2$, or $F_{4}^{(-20)}$. We exhibit examples of finitely generated subgroups of $Δ\times Δ$ with positive first Betti number all of whose discrete faithful representations into any real semisimple Lie group are quasi-isometric embeddings. The examples of this paper are inspired by the counterexamples of Bass-Lubotzky [BL00] to Platonov's conjecture.

Residually finite non linear hyperbolic groups

We exhibit the first examples of residually finite non-linear Gromov hyperbolic groups. Our examples are constructed as amalgamated products of torsion-free cocompact lattices in the rank 1 Lie group $\mathrm{Sp}(d,1)$, $d\geq 2$ along maximal cyclic subgroups.

Linearity and indiscreteness of amalgamated products of hyperbolic groups

We discuss the linearity and discreteness of amalgamated products of linear word-hyperbolic groups. In particular, we prove that the double of an Anosov group along a maximal cyclic subgroup is always linear, and we construct examples of such groups which do not admit any discrete and faithful representation in rank 1. We also build new examples of non-linear word-hyperbolic groups, elaborating on a previous work of Canary--Stover--Tsouvalas.

Quasi-isometric embeddings inapproximable by Anosov representations

We construct examples of quasi-isometric embeddings of word hyperbolic groups into $\mathsf{SL}(d,\mathbb{R})$ for $d \geqslant 5$ which are not limits of Anosov representations into $\mathsf{SL}(d,\mathbb{R})$. As a consequence, we conclude that an analogue of the density theorem for $\mathsf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ does not hold for $\mathsf{SL}(d,\mathbb{R})$ when $d \geqslant 5$.

On Borel Anosov representations in even dimensions

We prove that a word hyperbolic group which admits a $P_{2q+1}$-Anosov representation into $\mathsf{PGL}(4q+2, \mathbb{R})$ contains a finite-index subgroup which is either free or a surface group. As a consequence, we give an affirmative answer to Sambarino's question for Borel Anosov representations into $\mathsf{SL}(4q+2,\mathbb{R})$.

Topological restrictions on Anosov representations

We characterize groups admitting Anosov representations into $\mathsf{SL}(3,\mathbb R)$, projective Anosov representations into $\mathsf{SL}(4,\mathbb R)$, and Borel Anosov representations into $\mathsf{SL}(4,\mathbb R)$. More generally, we obtain bounds on the cohomological dimension of groups admitting $P_k$-Anosov representations into $\mathsf{SL}(d,\mathbb R)$ and offer several characterizations of Benoist representations.

New nonlinear hyperbolic groups

We construct nonlinear hyperbolic groups which are large, torsion-free, one-ended, and admit a finite $K(π,1)$. Our examples are built from superrigid cocompact rank one lattices via amalgamated free products and HNN extensions.

Euler characteristics on virtually free products

We define Euler characteristics on classes of residually finite and virtually torsion free groups and we show that they satisfy certain formulas in the case of amalgamated free products and HNN extensions over finite subgroups. These forumlas are obtained from a general result which applies to the rank gradient and the first $L^2$-Betti number of a finitely generated group.
