Spin chains for ADE quiver theories

The spectral problem of four-dimensional superconformal quiver gauge theories can be mapped to one-dimensional spin chains with restricted Hilbert spaces, where the composition of neighbouring spins follows the path algebra of the quiver. To better understand such spin chains, we compute the one-loop planar dilatation operator for the 4d N=2 ADE quiver gauge theories obtained by orbifolding the N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory and marginally deforming by independently varying the gauge couplings. This extends previous work which was mainly focused on the Z2 quiver. We characterise the general features of the resulting ADE spin-chain models and construct the 2-magnon Bethe ansatz for holomorphic states. We also evaluate, at large N, the N=2 superconformal index of these gauge theories and use it to study their protected spectrum in specific sectors.

On isomorphisms between quiver Yangians

Quiver Yangians are infinite-dimensional algebras capturing the BPS structure of a large class of supersymmetric models. Quiver theories related by Seiberg duality are expected to have isomorphic quiver Yangians, and this isomorphism has previously been shown for quivers corresponding to generalised conifold geometries. In this work, we present an explicit isomorphism for the two Seiberg dual phases of the F0 quiver theory, which falls outside of the above class. Some aspects of our construction are similar to the known cases, while others appear to be specific to the F0 quiver. In particular, the map involves square roots of operators bilinear in the fermionic fields of the mode being dualised.

Hidden Symmetries of 4D N=2 Gauge Theories

We study the global symmetries of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-orbifold of N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory and its marginal deformations. The process of orbifolding to obtain an N=2 theory would appear to break the $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ R-symmetry down to $\mathrm{SU}(2)\times \mathrm{SU}(2)\times \mathrm{U}(1)$. We show that the broken generators can be recovered by moving beyond the Lie algebraic setting to that of a Lie algebroid. This remains true when marginally deforming away from the orbifold point by allowing the couplings of the $ \mathrm{SU}(N)\times \mathrm{SU}(N)$ gauge groups to vary independently. The information about the marginal deformation is captured by a Drinfeld-type twist of this $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ Lie algebroid. The twist is read off from the F- and D- terms, and thus directly from the Lagrangian. Even though at the orbifold point the algebraic structure is associative, it becomes non-associative after the marginal deformation. We explicitly check that the planar Lagrangian of the theory is invariant under this twisted version of the $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ algebroid and we discuss implications of this hidden symmetry for the spectrum of the N=2 theory.

Free fermions, neutrality and modular transformations

With a view towards higher-spin applications, we study the partition function of a free complex fermion in 2d CFT, restricted to the neutral (zero fermion number) sector. This restriction leads to a partial theta function with a combinatoric interpretation in terms of Dyson's crank of a partition. More crucially, this partition function can be expressed in terms of a q-hypergeometric function with quantum modular properties. This allows us to find its high-temperature asymptotics, including subleading terms which agree with, but also go beyond, what one obtains by imposing neutrality thermodynamically through a chemical potential. We evaluate the asymptotic density of states for this neutral partition function, including the first few subleading terms. Our results should be extendable to more fermions, as well as to higher-spin chemical potentials, which would be of relevance to the higher-spin/minimal model correspondence.

Dynamical Spin Chains in 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs

This is the first in a series of papers devoted to the study of spin chains capturing the spectral problem of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs in the planar limit. At one loop and in the quantum plane limit, we discover a quasi-Hopf symmetry algebra, defined by the $R$-matrix read off from the superpotential. This implies that when orbifolding the $\mathcal{N}=4$ symmetry algebra down to the $\mathcal{N}=2$ one and then marginaly deforming, the broken generators are not lost, but get upgraded to quantum generators. Importantly, we demonstrate that these chains are dynamical, in the sense that their Hamiltonian depends on a parameter which is dynamically determined along the chain. At one loop we map the holomorphic SU(3) scalar sector to a dynamical 15-vertex model, which corresponds to an RSOS model, whose adjacency graph can be read off from the gauge theory quiver/brane tiling. One scalar SU(2) sub-sector is described by an alternating nearest-neighbour Hamiltonian, while another choice of SU(2) sub-sector leads to a dynamical dilute Temperley-Lieb model. These sectors have a common vacuum state, around which the magnon dispersion relations are naturally uniformised by elliptic functions. Concretely, for the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quiver theory we study these dynamical chains by solving the one- and two-magnon problems with the coordinate Bethe ansatz approach. We confirm our analytic results by numerical comparison with the explicit diagonalisation of the Hamiltonian for short closed chains.

Marginal deformations and quasi-Hopf algebras

We establish the existence of a quasi-Hopf algebraic structure underlying the Leigh-Strassler N=1 superconformal marginal deformations of the N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory. The scalar-sector R-matrix of these theories, which is related to their one-loop spin chain Hamiltonian, does not generically satisfy the Quantum Yang-Baxter Equation. By constructing a Drinfeld twist which relates this R-matrix to that of the N=4 SYM theory, but also produces a non-trivial co-associator, we show that the generic Leigh-Strassler R-matrix satisfies the quasi-Hopf version of the QYBE. We also use the twist to define a suitable star product which directly relates the N=4 SYM superpotential to that of the marginally deformed gauge theories. We expect our results to be relevant to studies of integrability (and its breaking) in these theories, as well as to provide useful input for supergravity solution-generating techniques.

On the combinatorics of partition functions in AdS3/LCFT2

Three-dimensional Topologically Massive Gravity at its critical point has been conjectured to be holographically dual to a Logarithmic CFT. However, many details of this correspondence are still lacking. In this work, we study the 1-loop partition function of Critical Cosmological Topologically Massive Gravity, previously derived by Gaberdiel, Grumiller and Vassilevich, and show that it can be usefully rewritten as a Bell polynomial expansion. We also show that there is a relationship between this Bell polynomial expansion and the Plethystic Exponential. Our reformulation allows us to match the TMG partition function to states on the CFT side, including the multi-particle states of t (the logarithmic partner of the CFT stress tensor) which had previously been elusive. We also discuss the appearance of a ladder action between the different multi-particle sectors in the partition function, which induces an interesting sl(2) structure on the n-particle components of the partition function.

Non-integrability and Chaos with Unquenched Flavor

We study (non-)integrability and the presence of chaos in gravity dual backgrounds of strongly coupled gauge theories with unquenched flavor, specifically of the four-dimensional N=2 super Yang-Mills theory and the three-dimensional ABJM theory. By examining string motion on the geometries corresponding to backreacted D3/D7 and D2/D6 systems, we show that integrable theories with quenched flavor become non-integrable when the virtual quark loops are taken into account. For the string solutions in the backreacted D3/D7 system, we compute the leading Lyapunov exponent which turns out to saturate to a positive value as the number of flavors increases. The exponent depends very weakly on the number of flavors when they approach the number of colors. This suggests that once a particular flavor number in the theory is reached, a further increase does not lead to more severe chaotic phenomena, implying certain saturation effects on chaos.

Integrable Hopf twists, marginal deformations and generalised geometry

The Leigh-Strassler family of N=1 marginal deformations of the N=4 SYM theory admits a Hopf algebra symmetry which is a quantum group deformation of the SU(3) part of the R-symmetry of the Ncal=4 theory. We investigate how this quantum symmetry might be expressed on the gravity side of the AdS/CFT correspondence. First, we discuss the twist leading to the Hopf algebra structure for the well-known beta-deformation as well as a unitarily equivalent theory that we call the w-deformation. We then show how this Hopf twist can be used to define a star product between the three scalar superfields of these theories which encodes the deformed global symmetry. Turning to the gravity side, we adapt this star product to deform the pure spinors of six-dimensional flat space in its generalised geometry description. This leads to an N=2 NS-NS solution of IIB supergravity. Starting from this precursor solution, adding D3-branes and taking the near-horizon limit reproduces the dual gravitational solution to the above theories, first derived by Lunin and Maldacena using TsT techniques. This indicates that the Hopf algebra symmetry can play a useful role in constructing the supergravity duals of the general Leigh-Strassler deformations.

On Marginal Deformations and Non-Integrability

We study the interplay between a particular marginal deformation of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, the $β$ deformation, and integrability in the holographic setting. Using modern methods of analytic non-integrability of Hamiltonian systems, we find that, when the $β$ parameter takes imaginary values, classical string trajectories on the dual background become non-integrable. We expect the same to be true for generic complex $β$ parameter. By exhibiting the Poincaré sections and phase space trajectories for the generic complex $β$ case, we provide numerical evidence of strong sensitivity to initial conditions. Our findings agree with expectations from weak coupling that the complex $β$ deformation is non-integrable and provide a rigorous argument beyond the trial and error approach to non-integrability.

Three-Point Functions in N=2 Higher-Spin Holography

The CP^N Kazama-Suzuki models with the non-linear chiral algebra SW_infinity[lambda] have been conjectured to be dual to the fully supersymmetric Prokushkin-Vasiliev theory of higher-spin gauge fields coupled to two massive N=2 multiplets on AdS_3. We perform a non-trivial check of this duality by computing three-point functions containing one higher-spin gauge field for arbitrary spin s and deformation parameter lambda from the bulk theory, and from the boundary using a free ghost system based on the linear sw_infinity[lambda] algebra. We find an exact match between the two computations. In the 't Hooft limit, the three-point functions only depend on the wedge subalgebra shs[lambda] and the results are equivalent for any theory with such a subalgebra. In the process we also find the emergence of N=2 superconformal symmetry near the AdS_3 boundary by computing holographic OPE's, consistently with a recent analysis of asymptotic symmetries of higher-spin supergravity.

Extremal vs. Non-Extremal Correlators with Giant Gravitons

We consider extremal and non-extremal three-point functions of two giant gravitons and one point-like graviton using Schur polynomials in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and holographically, using a semiclassical Born-Infeld analysis as well as bubbling geometries. For non-extremal three-point functions our computations using all three approaches are in perfect agreement. For extremal correlators we find that our results from the bubbling geometry analysis agree with existing results from the gauge theory. The semiclassical Born-Infeld computation for the extremal case is known to give a different answer, which we interpret as a manifestation of the known subtlety of holography for extremal correlators.

Holographic three-point functions of giant gravitons

Working within the AdS/CFT correspondence we calculate the three-point function of two giant gravitons and one pointlike graviton using methods of semiclassical string theory and considering both the case where the giant gravitons wrap an S^3 in S^5 and the case where the giant gravitons wrap an S^3 in AdS_5. We likewise calculate the correlation function in N=4 SYM using two Schur polynomials and a single trace chiral primary. We find that the gauge and string theory results have structural similarities but do not match perfectly, and interpret this in terms of the Schur polynomials' inability to interpolate between dual giant and pointlike gravitons.

On the spectral problem of N=4 SYM with orthogonal or symplectic gauge group

We study the spectral problem of N=4 SYM with gauge group SO(N) and Sp(N). At the planar level, the difference to the case of gauge group SU(N) is only due to certain states being projected out, however at the non-planar level novel effects appear: While 1/N-corrections in the SU(N) case are always associated with splitting and joining of spin chains, this is not so for SO(N) and Sp(N). Here the leading 1/N-corrections, which are due to non-orientable Feynman diagrams in the field theory, originate from a term in the dilatation operator which acts inside a single spin chain. This makes it possible to test for integrability of the leading 1/N-corrections by standard (Bethe ansatz) means and we carry out various such tests. For orthogonal and symplectic gauge group the dual string theory lives on the orientifold AdS5xRP5. We discuss various issues related to semi-classical strings on this background.

Quantum Symmetries and Marginal Deformations

We study the symmetries of the N=1 exactly marginal deformations of N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory. For generic values of the parameters, these deformations are known to break the SU(3) part of the R-symmetry group down to a discrete subgroup. However, a closer look from the perspective of quantum groups reveals that the Lagrangian is in fact invariant under a certain Hopf algebra which is a non-standard quantum deformation of the algebra of functions on SU(3). Our discussion is motivated by the desire to better understand why these theories have significant differences from N=4 SYM regarding the planar integrability (or rather lack thereof) of the spin chains encoding their spectrum. However, our construction works at the level of the classical Lagrangian, without relying on the language of spin chains. Our approach might eventually provide a better understanding of the finiteness properties of these theories as well as help in the construction of their AdS/CFT duals.

Non-planar ABJ Theory and Parity

While the ABJ Chern-Simons-matter theory and its string theory dual manifestly lack parity invariance, no sign of parity violation has so far been observed on the weak coupling spin chain side. In particular, the planar two-loop dilatation generator of ABJ theory is parity invariant. In this letter we derive the non-planar part of the two-loop dilatation generator of ABJ theory in its SU(2)xSU(2) sub-sector. Applying the dilatation generator to short operators, we explicitly demonstrate that, for operators carrying excitations on both spin chains, the non-planar part breaks parity invariance. For operators with only one type of excitation, however, parity remains conserved at the non-planar level. We furthermore observe that, as for ABJM theory, the degeneracy between planar parity pairs is lifted when non-planar corrections are taken into account.
