Thermoelectric performance of classical topological insulator nanowires

There is currently substantial effort being invested into creating efficient thermoelectric nanowires based on topological insulator chalcogenide-type materials. A key premise of these efforts is the assumption that the generally good thermoelectric properties that these materials exhibit in bulk form will translate into similarly good or even better thermoelectric performance of the same materials in nanowire form. Here, we calculate thermoelectric performance of topological insulator nanowires based on Bi2Te3, Sb2Te3 and Bi2Se3 as a function of diameter and Fermi level. We show that the thermoelectric performance of topological insulator nanowires does not derive from the properties of the bulk material in a straightforward way. For all investigated systems the competition between surface states and bulk channel causes a significant modification of the thermoelectric transport coefficients if the diameter is reduced into the sub-10 um range. Key aspects are that the surface and bulk states are optimized at different Fermi levels or have different polarity as well as the high surface to volume ratio of the nanowires. This limits the maximum thermoelectric performance of topological insulator nanowires and thus their application in efficient thermoelectric devices.

Magnon contribution to the magnetoresistance of iron nanowires deposited using pulsed electrodeposition

Iron nanowires with a square cross section are grown by pulsed electrodeposition within a newly developed nanochannel template that allows for easy characterization. Measurements of the magnetoresistance as a function of magnetic field and temperature are performed within a large parameter window allowing for the investigation of the magnonic contribution to the magnetoresistance of electrodeposited iron nanowires. Values for the temperature dependent magnon stiffness D(T) are extracted.

Electrochemical synthesis of highly ordered nanowires with a rectangular cross-section using an in-plane nanochannel array

Rapid and reproducible assembly of aligned nanostructures on a wafer-scale is a crucial, yet one of the most challenging tasks in the incorporation of nanowires into integrated circuits. We present the synthesis of a periodic nanochannel template designed for electrochemical growth of perfectly aligned, rectangular nanowires over large areas. The nanowires can be electrically contacted and characterized in situ using a pre-patterned multi-point measurement platform. During the measurement the wires remain within a thick oxide matrix providing protection against breaking and oxidation. We use laser interference lithography, reactive ion etching and atomic layer deposition to create cm-long parallel nanochannels with characteristic dimensions as small as 40 nm. In a showcase study pulsed electrodeposition of iron is carried out creating rectangular shaped iron nanowires within the nanochannels. By design of the device, the grown wires are in contact with an integrated electrode system on both ends directly after the deposition. No further processing steps are required for electrical characterization, minimizing the risk of damage and oxidation. The developed nanowire measurement device allows for multi-probe resistance measurements and can easily be adopted for transistor applications. The guided, in-plane growth of electrodeposited nanowire arrays which are tunable in size and density paves the way for the incorporation of nanowires into a large variety of multifunctional devices.

Impact of the Topological Surface State on the Thermoelectric Transport in Sb$_2$Te$_3$ Thin Films

Ab initio electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory and tight-binding methods for the thermoelectric properties of p-type Sb$_2$Te$_3$ films are presented. The thickness-dependent electrical conductivity and the ther- mopower are computed in the diffusive limit of transport based on the Boltzmann equation. Contributions of the bulk and the surface to the transport coefficients are separated which enables to identify a clear impact of the topological surface state on the thermoelectric properties. By tuning the charge carrier concentration, a crossover between a surface-state-dominant and a Fuchs-Sondheimer transport regime is achieved. The calculations are corroborated by thermoelectric transport measurements on Sb$_2$Te$_3$ films grown by atomic layer deposition.

Resolving the Dirac Cone on the Surface of Bi2Te3 Topological Insulator Nanowires by Field-Effect Measurements

We validate the linear dispersion relation and resolve the Dirac cone on the surface of a single Bi2Te3 nanowire via a combination of field-effect and magnetoresistance measurements by which we unambiguously prove the topological insulator nature of the nanowire surface states. Moreover we show that the experimentally determined carrier concentration, mobility and cyclotron mass of the surface states are in excellent agreement with relativistic models. Our method provides a facile way to identify topological insulators that too small for angle-resolved photo emission spectroscopy.

Electrical transport in C-doped GaAs nanowires: surface effects

The resistivity and the mobility of Carbon doped GaAs nanowires have been studied for different doping concentrations. Surface effects have been evaluated by comparing upassivated with passivated nanowires. We directly see the influence of the surface: the pinning of the Fermi level and the consequent existence of a depletion region lead to an increase of the mobility up to 30 cm^2/(V*s) for doping concentrations lower than 3*10^18 cm^-3. Electron beam induced current measurements show that the minority carrier diffusion path can be as high as 190 nm for passivated nanowires.

Insights into the electronic structure of Co2FeSi from x-ray magnetic linear dichroism

Experimental evidence both for and against a half-metallic ground-state of the Heusler compound Co2FeSi has been published. Density functional theory based calculations suggest a non half-metallic ground state. It has been argued, that on-site Coulomb interaction of the d electrons has to be taken into account via the LDA+U method, which predicts a half-metallic ground-state for U = 2.5...4.5 eV. X-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) can be used as a tool to assess the appropriateness of the LDA+U approach: the calculated spectra within the LDA+U or GGA+U schemes are different from those within the LDA or GGA. Due to its ability to separate different orbital symmetries, XMLD allows us to distinguish between different models of the electronic structure of Co2FeSi. In this article we discuss experimental XMLD spectra and compare them with detailed first principles calculations. Our findings give evidence for the inadequacy of the LDA+U or GGA+U band structures, whereas constrained calculations with the GGA and a fixed spin moment of 6 μ_B give better overall agreement between experiment and theory.

Thermoelectric power factor of a 70 nm Ni-nanowire in a magnetic field

Thermoelectric (TE) properties of a single nanowire (NW) are investigated in a microlab which allows the determination of the Seebeck coefficient S and the conductivity σ. A significiant influence of the magnetization of a 70 nm ferromagnetic Ni-NW on its power factor S^{2}σ is observed. We detected a strong magneto thermopower effect (MTP) of about 10% and an anisotropic magneto resistance (AMR) as a function of an external magnetic field B in the order of 1%. At T = 295 K and B = 0 T we determined the absolute value of S = - (19 \pm 2) μV/K. At zero field the figure of merit ZT \approx 0.02 was calculated using the Wiedemann-Franz-law for the thermal conductivity. The thermopower S increases considerably as a function of B up to 10% at B = 0.5 T, and with a magneto thermopower of \partialS/\partialB \approx - (3.8 \pm 0,5) μV/(K.T). The AMR and MTP are related by \partials/\partialr \approx -11 \pm 1 (\partials = \partialS/S). The TE efficiency increases in a transversal magnetic field (B =0.5T) due to an enhanced power factor by nearly 20%.

Itinerant and local magnetic moments in ferrimagnetic Mn2CoGa thin films probed by x-ray magnetic linear dichroism: experiment and ab initio theory

Epitaxial thin films of the half-metallic Xa-compound Mn2CoGa (Hg2CuTi prototype) were prepared by dc magnetron co-sputtering with different heat treatments on MgO (001) substrates. High-quality films with a bulk magnetization of 1.95(5)μ_B per unit cell were obtained. The L3,2 x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra agree with calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and reveal the antiparallel alignment of the two inequivalent Mn moments. X-ray magnetic linear dichroism, in good agreement with theory as well, allows to distinguish between itinerant and local Mn moments. Based on non-collinear spin DFT it is shown that one of the two Mn moments has local character, whereas the other Mn moment and the Co moment are itinerant.

Magnetization dynamics in optically excited nanostructured nickel films

In this work, Laser-induced magnetization dynamics of nanostructured nickel films is investigated. The influence of the nanosize is discussed considering the time-scale of hundreds of femtoseconds as well as the GHz regime. While no nanosize effect is observed on the short time-scale, the excited magnetic mode in the GHz regime can be identified by comparison with micromagnetic simulations. The thickness dependence reveals insight on the dipole interaction between single nickel structures. Also, transient reflectivity changes are discussed.
