On the Performance Analysis of RIS-Empowered Communications Over Nakagami-m Fading

In this paper, we study the performance of wireless communications empowered by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RISs) over Nakagami-m fading channels. We consider two phase configuration designs for the RIS, one random and another one based on coherent phase shifting. For both phase configuration cases, we present single-integral expressions for the outage probability and the bit error rate of binary modulation schemes, which can be efficiently evaluated numerically. In addition, we propose accurate closed-form approximations for the ergodic capacity of the considered system. For all considered metrics, we have also derived simple analytical expressions that become tight for large numbers of RIS reflecting elements. Numerically evaluated results compared with Monte Carlo simulations are presented in order to verify the correctness of the proposed analysis and showcase the impact of various system settings.

Path Loss, Angular Spread and Channel Sparsity Modeling for Indoor and Outdoor Environments at the sub-THz Band

In this paper, we present new measurement results to model large-scale path loss, angular spread and channel sparsity at the sub-THz (141-145 GHz) band, for both indoor and outdoor scenarios. Extensive measurement campaigns have been carried out, taking into account both line-of-sight (LoS) and non line-of-sight (NLoS) propagation. For all considered propagation scenarios, omni-directional and directional path loss models have been developed, based on the so-called close-in (CI) free-space reference distance model. Moreover, path loss modeling has been applied for the 2nd and 3rd strongest multipath components (MPCs), based on which path loss exponent and large-scale shadow fading estimates have been derived. A power angular spread analysis is further presented, using up to the 3rd strongest MPC. Finally, results on the sparsity of the wireless channel have also been presented by employing the so-called Gini index.

On the Distribution of the Ratio of Products of Fisher-Snedecor $\mathcal{F}$ Random Variables and Its Applications

The Fisher-Snedecor $\mathcal{F}$ distribution has been recently proposed as a more accurate and mathematically tractable composite fading model than traditional established models in some practical cases. In this paper, we firstly derive exact closed-form expressions for the main statistical characterizations of the ratio of products of $\mathcal{F}$-distributed random variables, including the probability density function, the cumulative distribution function and the moment generating function. Secondly, simple and tight approximations to the distribution of products and ratio of products of $\mathcal{F}$-distributed random variables are presented. These analytical results can be readily employed to evaluate the performance of several emerging system configurations, including full-duplex relaying systems operating in the presence of co-channel interference and wireless communication systems enhanced with physical-layer security. The proposed mathematical analysis is substantiated by numerically evaluated results, accompanied by equivalent ones obtained using Monte Carlo simulations.

A Unified Effective Capacity Performance Analysis of Lp-norm Diversity Reception over Arbitrary and Correlated Generalized Fading Channels

The effective capacity (EC) has been recently established as a rigorous alternative to the classical Shannon's ergodic capacity since it accounts for the delay constraints imposed by future wireless applications and their impact on the overall system performance. This paper presents a novel moment generating function (MGF)-based framework for the unified EC performance analysis of a generic Lp-norm diversity combining scheme operating over arbitrary and correlated generalized fading channels and a maximum delay constraint. The Lp-norm diversity is a generic diversity structure which includes as special cases various well-known diversity schemes such as equal gain combining (EGC) and maximal ratio combining (MRC). For MRC, the proposed methodology reduces to a previously published MGF-based approach for the evaluation of the EC, whereas, for EGC, analytical approach presented is novel and the associated performance evaluation results have not been published previously in the open technical literature. Based on this methodology, novel analytical closed-form expressions for the EC performance of dual branch Lp-norm diversity receivers operating over Gamma shadowed generalized Nakagami-m fading channels are deduced. For diversity order greater than two, a novel analytical approach for the asymptotic EC performance analysis is also developed and evaluated, revealing how basic system parameters affect the overall system performance. The overall mathematical formalism is validated with selected numerical and equivalent simulation performance evaluation results thus confirming the correctness of the proposed unified analytical methodology.

Physical Layer Security over Fluctuating Two-Ray Fading Channels

Ensuring the physical layer security (PHY-security) of millimeter wave (mmWave) communications is one of the key factors for the success of 5G. Recent field measurements show that conventional fading models cannot accurately model the random fluctuations of mmWave signals. To tackle this challenge, the fluctuating two-ray (FTR) fading model has been proposed. In this correspondence, we comprehensively analyze the PHY-security in mmWave communications over FTR fading channels. More specifically, we derive analytical expressions for significant PHY-security metrics, such as average secrecy capacity, secrecy outage probability, and the probability of strictly positive secrecy capacity, with simple functions. The effect of channel parameters on the PHY-security has been validated by numerical results.

New Results on the Fluctuating Two-Ray Model with Arbitrary Fading Parameters and Its Applications

The fluctuating two-ray (FTR) fading model provides a much better fit than other fading models for small-scale fading measurements in millimeter wave communications. In this paper, using a mixture of gamma distributions, new exact analytical expressions for the probability density and cumulative distribution functions of the FTR distribution with arbitrary fading parameters are presented. Moreover, the performance of digital communication systems over the FTR fading channel is evaluated in terms of the channel capacity and the bit error rate. The interaction between channel fading parameters and system performance is further investigated. Our newly derived results extend and complement previous knowledge of the FTR fading model.

Secrecy Outage Analysis over Correlated Composite Nakagami-$m$/Gamma Fading Channels

The secrecy outage performance of wireless communication systems operating over spatially correlated composite fading channels is analyzed in this paper. We adopt a multiplicative composite channel model for both the legitimate communication link and the link between the eavesdropper and the legitimate transmitter, consisting of Nakagami-$m$ distributed small-scale fading and shadowing (large-scale fading) modeled by the Gamma distribution. We consider the realistic case where small-scale fading between the links is independent, but shadowing is arbitrarily correlated, and present novel analytical expressions for the probability that the secrecy capacity falls below a target secrecy rate. The presented numerically evaluated results, verified by equivalent computer simulations, offer useful insights on the impact of shadowing correlation and composite fading parameters on the system's secrecy outage performance.

On High-Order Capacity Statistics of Spectrum Aggregation Systems over $κ$-$μ$ and $κ$-$μ$ shadowed Fading Channels

The frequency scarcity imposed by fast growing demand for mobile data service requires promising spectrum aggregation systems. The so-called higher-order statistics (HOS) of the channel capacity is a suitable metric on the system performance. While prior relevant works have improved our knowledge on the HOS characterization of spectrum aggregation systems, an analytical framework encompassing generalized fading models of interest is not yet available. In this paper, we pursue a detailed HOS analysis of $κ$-$μ$ and $κ$-$μ$ shadowed fading channels by deriving novel and exact expressions. Furthermore, the simplified HOS expressions for the asymptotically low and high signal-to-noise regimes are derived. Several important statistical measures, such as amount of fading, amount of dispersion, reliability, skewness, and kurtosis, are obtained by using the HOS results. More importantly, the useful implications of system and fading parameters on spectrum aggregation systems are investigated for channel selection. Finally, all derived expressions are validated via Monte-Carlo simulations.

Free Space Optical Communication with Spatial Modulation and Coherent Detection over H-K Atmospheric Turbulence Channels

The use of optical spatial modulation (OSM), which has been recently emerged as a power and bandwidth efficient pulsed modulation technique for indoor optical wireless communication, is proposed as a simple, low-complexity means of achieving spatial diversity in coherent free space optical (FSO) communication systems. In doing so, this paper makes several novel contributions as follows. It presents a generic analytical framework for obtaining the Average Bit Error Probability (ABEP) of uncoded OSM with coherent detection in the presence of turbulence-induced fading. Although the framework is general enough to accommodate any type of models based on turbulence scattering, the focus in this paper is the H-K distribution. Although this distribution represents a very general scattering model valid over a wide range of atmospheric conditions, it is has not been considered in the past in conjunction with FSO systems possibly because of its mathematical complexity. The proposed analytical framework yields exact performance evaluation results for MIMO systems with two transmit- and an arbitrary number of receive apertures. In addition, tight upper bounds are derived for the error probability for OSM systems with an arbitrary number of transmit apertures as well as for convolutionally encoded signals. The performance of OSM is compared to that of well established coherent FSO schemes, employing spatial diversity at the transmitter or the receiver only. Specifically, it is shown that OSM can offer comparable performance with conventional coherent FSO schemes while outperforming the latter in terms of spectral efficiency and hardware complexity. Various numerical performance evaluation results are also presented and compared with equivalent results obtained by Monte Carlo simulations which verify the accuracy of the derived analytical expressions.

Asymptotic Error Performance Analysis of Spatial Modulation under Generalized Fading

This letter presents a comprehensive framework analyzing the asymptotic error performance of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless system employing spatial modulation (SM) with maximum likelihood detection and perfect channel state information. Generic analytical expressions for the diversity and coding gains are deduced that reveal fundamental properties of MIMO SM systems. The presented analysis can be used to obtain closed-form upper bounds for the average bit error probability (ABEP) of MIMO SM systems under generalized fading which become asymptotically tight in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region.
