Lectures on Instanton Counting

These notes have two parts. The first is a study of Nekrasov's deformed partition functions $Z(\ve_1,\ve_2,\vec{a};\q,\vecτ)$ of N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills theories, which are generating functions of the integration in the equivariant cohomology over the moduli spaces of instantons on $\mathbb R^4$. The second is review of geometry of the Seiberg-Witten curves and the geometric engineering of the gauge theory, which are physical backgrounds of Nekrasov's partition functions. The first part is continuation of math.AG/0306198, where we identified the Seiberg-Witten prepotential with $Z(0,0,\vec{a};\q,0)$. We put higher Casimir operators to the partition function and clarify their relation to the Seiberg-Witten $u$-plane. We also determine the coefficients of $\ve_1\ve_2$ and $(\ve_1^2+\ve_2^2)/3$ (the genus 1 part) of the partition function, which coincide with two measure factors $A$, $B$ appeared in the $u$-plane integral. The proof is based on the blowup equation which we derived in the previous paper.

A note on Fourier-Mukai transform

In this note, we consider the problem on the preservation of stability under the Fourier-Mukai transforms. We first show that the Fourier-Mukai transform on an abelian surface or a K3 surface does not always preserve the stability, even for a $μ$-stable vector bundle. We next provide some positive results on this problem. Finally we discuss the birational map of moduli spaces on an abelian surface.

Twisted stability and Fourier-Mukai transform

In this paper, we consider the preservation of stability by using the notion of Twisted stability. As applications, (1) we show that moduli spaces of vector bundles on K3 and abelian surfaces are irreducible, (2) we compute Hodge polynomials of some moduli spaces of vector bundles on Enriques surfaces and on elliptic surfaces with a section.

Moduli spaces of stable sheaves on abelian surfaces

In this paper, we consider moduli spaces of stable sheaves on abelian surfaces. Our main assumption is the primitivity of the associated Mukai vector. We construct many isomorphisms of muduli spaces induced by Fourier-Mukai functor. As an application, we show that deformation type of these spaces are determined by their dimension. We next show that the fiber of the albanese map is irreducible symplectic manifolds In particular, we describe the period by using Mukai lattice. We also discuss deformation type of moduli spaces of stable sheaves on K3 surfaces.

String Partition Functions and Infinite Products

We continue to explore the conjectural expressions of the Gromov-Witten potentials for a class of elliptically and K3 fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds in the limit where the base P^1 of the K3 fibration becomes infinitely large. At least in this limit we argue that the string partition function (=the exponential generating function of the Gromov-Witten potentials) can be expressed as an infinite product in which the Kahler moduli and the string coupling are treated somewhat on an equal footing. Technically speaking, we use the exponential lifting of a weight zero Jacobi form to reach the infinite product as in the celebrated work of Borcherds. However, the relevant Jacobi form is associated with a lattice of Lorentzian signature. A major part of this work is devoted to an attempt to interpret the infinite product or more precisely the Jacobi form in terms of the bound states of D2- and D0-branes using a vortex description and its suitable generalization.

Irreducibility of moduli spaces of vector bundles on K3 surfaces

In this paper, we show the moduli spaces of stable sheaves on K3 surfaces are irreducible symplectic manifolds, if the associated Mukai vectors are primitive. More precisely, we show that they are related to the Hilbert scheme of points. We also compute the period of these spaces. As an application of our result, we discuss Montonen-Olive duality in Physics. In particular our computations of Euler characteristics of moduli spaces are compatible with Physical computations by Minahan et al.

Euler characteristics of SU(2) instanton moduli spaces on rational elliptic surfaces

Recently, Minahan, Nemeschansky, Vafa and Warner computed partition functions for N=4 topological Yang-Mills theory on rational elliptic surfaces. In particular they computed generating functions of Euler characteristics of SU(2)-instanton moduli spaces. In mathematics, they are expected to coincide with those of Gieseker compactifications. In this paper, we compute Euler characteristics of these spaces and show that our results coincide with theirs. We also check the modular property of Z_{SU(2)} and Z_{SO(3)} conjectured by Vafa and Witten.

An application of exceptional bundles to the moduli of stable sheaves on a K3 surface

Let M(v) be the moduli of stable sheaves on K3 surfaces X of Mukai vector v. If v is primitive, than it is expected that M(v) is deformation equivalent to some Hilbert scheme and weight two hogde structure can be described by H^*(X,Z). These are known by Mukai, O'Grady and Huybrechts if rank is 1 or 2, or the first Chern class is primitive. Under some conditions on the dimension of M(v), we shall show that these assertion are true. For the proof, we shall use Huybrechts's results on symplectic manifolds.

Some notes on the moduli of stable sheaves on elliptic surfaces

Under some assumptions, we compute the Picard group of moduli of stable sheaves on Abelian surfaces. Considering relative moduli spaces, it is sufficient to consider the moduli of stable sheaves on the product of elliptic curves. By using elementary transformatios (which was used by Friedman to treat rank 2 moduli spaces on elliptic surfaces), we treat this case. We also show that some moduli spaces on P^2 are rational.
