Growing Einstein-Rosen Bridge with Multi-partite Entanglement

Can quantum entanglement continue to grow even after the entanglement entropies of subsystems have saturated? We address this question using genuine multi-entropy, which probes multi-partite entanglement structure beyond bipartite entanglement. In a two-sided BTZ black hole, this quantity grows linearly with time after every subsystem entropy of a fixed tripartition has saturated, extending the interval in which entanglement detects Einstein-Rosen bridge growth. The result refines the ER=EPR relation by identifying multi-partite structure invisible to ordinary entanglement entropies. Some spin-chain models and the spatially partitioned Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model exhibit distinct transients, while the late-time plateau values in holography, the SYK model, and Haar-random states share a universal behaviour.

Black hole as a multipartite entangler: multi-entropy in AdS${}_3$/CFT${}_2$

We study multipartite entanglement in typical pure states holographically dual to pure BTZ black holes, using multi-entropy and its ``genuine'' version. In the bulk, these quantities are computed by minimal geodesic networks (so-called Steiner trees). We find that at sufficiently high temperature, the genuine tripartite multi-entropy exhibits a volume-law scaling in sharp contrast to vacuum AdS$_3$, where the genuine contribution is universal and size-independent. Moreover, we find another phase: once one subsystem exceeds half of the total system, the leading genuine tripartite entanglement vanishes and reduces to that for global AdS${}_3$. This transition is indeed consistent with recent arguments for distillable EPR pairs in tripartite Haar-random states. Motivated by finite-cutoff holography, we further study the radial cutoff dependence of multi-entropy and show that genuine multi-entropy acquires nontrivial size dependence even for the tripartite case in AdS${}_3$. As a byproduct, we also observe an intriguing ``area-law'' contribution to multi-entropy that is relevant to vacuum AdS${}_3$.

Holographic AME states in black hole interiors

We argue that the special extremal slice inside an AdS black hole is dual to an absolutely maximally entangled (AME) state. We demonstrate this by confirming the $n$-independence of holographic $n$-th Renyi entropies for any bi-partite subsystems. Our result gives an AME state in an infinite-volume system, where the local bond dimension is set by the black hole entropy. In particular, our construction provides concrete support from the gravity side for the emergence of random structures and an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space in recent non-isometric holographic codes.

Non-Equilibrating a Black Hole with Inhomogeneous Quantum Quench

We study quantum quench processes in (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) in which the initial thermal equilibrium (Gibbs) state is time-evolved by spatially inhomogeneous Hamiltonians, the so-called Möbius and sine-square-deformed (SSD) Hamiltonians. We found that, when the quench is induced by the SSD Hamiltonian, almost all the degrees of freedom are asymptotically gathered at a single point, resulting in a point-like excitation. This excitation, which we dub black hole-like excitation, carries as much information as the total thermal entropy. In contrast, other parts of the system approach the low-entropy (low-temperature) state at late times. For the quench by the Möbius Hamiltonian, we instead found an eternal periodic oscillation of physical quantities such as von Neumann entropy for subsystems. When the CFT admits a holographic dual description, the SSD quench induces a time-dependent, inhomogeneous deformation of the bulk black hole horizon, which, at late enough times, ``touches'' the boundary. Our quench setups can be used as a way to create low-temperature states, and, also, simulate the formation and evaporation processes of black holes.

Efficient Simulation of Low Temperature Physics in One-Dimensional Gapless Systems

We discuss the computational efficiency of the finite temperature simulation with the minimally entangled typical thermal states (METTS). To argue that METTS can be efficiently represented as matrix product states, we present an analytic upper bound for the average entanglement Renyi entropy of METTS for Renyi index $0<q\leq 1$. In particular, for 1D gapless systems described by CFTs, the upper bound scales as $\mathcal{O}(c N^0 \log β)$ where $c$ is the central charge and $N$ is the system size. Furthermore, we numerically find that the average Renyi entropy exhibits a universal behavior characterized by the central charge and is roughly given by half of the analytic upper bound. Based on these results, we show that METTS provide a significant speedup compared to employing the purification method to analyze thermal equilibrium states at low temperatures in 1D gapless systems.

Black Hole Singularity and Timelike Entanglement

We study timelike and conventional entanglement entropy as potential probes of black hole singularities via the AdS/CFT correspondence. Using an analytically tractable example, we find characteristic behavior of holographic timelike entanglement entropy when the geometry involves a curvature singularity. We also observe interesting phenomena that, in some particular setups, holographic timelike and conventional entanglement entropy are determined from multiple complex saddle points, which fall outside the assumptions of the Lewkowycz-Maldacena type argument.

Hawking-Page and entanglement phase transition in 2d CFT on curved backgrounds

The thermodynamics and the entanglement properties of two-dimensional conformal field theories ($2$d CFTs) on curved backgrounds are studied. By means of conformal mapping we study the equivalent system on flat space governed by the deformed Hamiltonian, which is a spatial integral of the Hamiltonian density modulated by an enveloping function. Focusing on holographic CFTs, we observe Hawking-Page like phase transition for the thermal and the entanglement entropy as we vary the background metric. We also compute the mutual information to study the information theoretic correlation between parts of the curved spacetime. The gravity dual of 2d CFTs on curved background is also discussed.

Local operator quench induced by two-dimensional inhomogeneous and homogeneous CFT Hamiltonians

We explore non-equilibrium processes in two-dimensional conformal field theories (2d CFTs) due to the growth of operators induced by inhomogeneous and homogeneous Hamiltonians by investigating the time dependence of the partition function, energy density, and entanglement entropy. The non-equilibrium processes considered in this paper are constructed out of the Lorentzian and Euclidean time evolution governed by different Hamiltonians. We explore the effect of the time ordering on entanglement dynamics so that we find that in a free boson CFT and RCFTs, this time ordering does not affect the entanglement entropy, while in the holographic CFTs, it does. Our main finding is that in the holographic CFTs, the non-unitary time evolution induced by the inhomogeneous Hamiltonian can retain the initial state information longer than in the unitary time evolution.

Inhomogeneous quenches as state preparation in two-dimensional conformal field theories

The non-equilibrium process where the system does not evolve to the featureless state is one of the new central objects in the non-equilibrium phenomena. In this paper, starting from the short-range entangled state in the two-dimensional conformal field theories ($2$d CFTs), the boundary state with a regularization, we evolve the system with the inhomogeneous Hamiltonians called Möbius/SSD ones. Regardless of the details of CFTs considered in this paper, during the Möbius evolution, the entanglement entropy exhibits the periodic motion called quantum revival. During SSD time evolution, except for some subsystems, in the large time regime, entanglement entropy and mutual information are approximated by those for the vacuum state. We argue the time regime for the subsystem to cool down to vacuum one is $t_1 \gg \mathcal{O}(L\sqrt{l_A})$, where $t_1$, $L$, and $l_A$ are time, system, and subsystem sizes. This finding suggests the inhomogeneous quench induced by the SSD Hamiltonian may be used as the preparation for the approximately-vacuum state. We propose the gravity dual of the systems considered in this paper, furthermore, and generalize it. In addition to them, we discuss the relation between the inhomogenous quenches and continuous multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA).

Spatial deformation of many-body quantum chaotic systems and quantum information scrambling

We study the effect of spatial inhomogeneity on quantum information scrambling, a process of spreading and locally hiding quantum information in quantum many-body systems. As a paradigmatic example, we consider the quantum chaotic Ising spin chain and its inhomogeneous counterpart that is obtained by modulating the Hamiltonian density. Specifically, we consider the so-called Möbius and sine-square deformations that were previously studied in the context of (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theories ($1+1$ d CFTs). In the spatial region where the modulated energy density is small, these deformations prevent the spreading of quantum information while in the region where the modulated energy density is large quantum information scrambling is accelerated. This suggests that we can control the scrambling and butterfly effect by spatially modulating the Hamiltonian density. We also found that the time dependence of energy density exhibits the signature of black-hole-like excitation found in the $1+1$ d CFTs even in the chaotic spin chain.

Scrambling and Recovery of Quantum Information in Inhomogeneous Quenches in Two-dimensional Conformal Field Theories

We study various quantum quench processes induced by the Möbius/sine-square deformation of the Hamiltonian in two-dimensional conformal field theories starting from the thermofield double state in the two copies of the Hilbert space. These quantum quenches, some of which are directly related to the operator entanglement of the time-evolution operators, allow us to study scrambling and recovery of quantum information. In particular, under the SSD time-evolution, we show from the time-dependence of mutual information that the Bell pairs, initially shared by the subsystems of the two Hilbert spaces, may revive even after the mutual information for small subsystems is completely destroyed by quantum information scrambling dynamics. This mutual information is robust against the strong scrambling dynamics. As a consequence, the steady state has a non-local correlation shared not by any of two parties but by three parties. In the holographic dual description, a wormhole connecting the two Hilbert spaces may non-linearly grow with time during the quantum quenches. We also propose effective pictures that describe the dynamics of mutual information during the time-evolution by inhomogeneous Hamiltonians.

Entanglement Dynamics of the Non-Unitary Holographic Channel

We study the dynamical properties of a strongly scrambling quantum circuit involving a projective measurement on a finite-sized region by studying the operator entanglement entropy and mutual information (OEE and BOMI) of the dual operator state that corresponds to this quantum circuit. The time-dependence of the OEE exhibits a new dynamical behavior of operator entanglement, namely an additional fractional coefficient that accompanies the linear time growth of the OEE. For a holographic system, this is equivalent to an additional fractional coefficient that modifies the linear growth rate of the wormhole volume. The time-dependence of the BOMI shows that the projective measurement may destroy the non-local correlations in this dual state. We also propose a gravity dual as well as a line-tension picture, which is an effective model, that describe this strongly scrambling quantum circuit.

Notes on Pseudo Entropy Amplification

We study pseudo entropy for a particular linear combination of entangled states in qubit systems, two-dimensional free conformal field theories (CFT), and two-dimensional holographic CFT. We observe phenomena that the pseudo entropy can be parametrically large compared with the logarithm of the dimension of Hilbert space. We call these phenomena pseudo entropy amplification. The pseudo entropy amplification is analogous to the amplification of the weak value. In particular, our result suggests the holographic CFT does not lead the amplification as long as the non-perturbative effects are negligible. We also give a heuristic argument when such (non-)amplification can occur.

Page curve and symmetries

Motivated by the quantum process of black hole evaporation and its implications for symmetries, we consider a qubit system with a random dynamics as a toy model of black hole. We compute its symmetry-resolved entropies and discuss its implications. We first consider the case where charges are conserved and compute the symmetry-resolved entropies. We derive a symmetry-resolved analogue of the Page curve. We then consider the case where symmetry is explicitly broken and charges are no longer conserved. It serves as a toy model for global symmetry breaking in black hole evaporation. Despite the simple framework, the symmetry-resolved entropies capture various interesting features during the analogous process of black hole evaporation in our qubit model.

Information Scrambling Versus Quantum Revival Through the Lens of Operator Entanglement

In this paper, we look for signatures of quantum revivals in two-dimensional conformal field theories (2d CFTs) on a spatially compact manifold by using operator entanglement. It is believed that thermalization does not occur on spatially compact manifolds as the quantum state returns to its initial state which is a phenomenon known as quantum revival. We find that in CFTs such as the free fermion CFT, the operator mutual information exhibits quantum revival in accordance with the relativistic propagation of quasiparticles while in holographic CFTs, the operator mutual information does not exhibit this revival and the quasiparticle picture breaks down. Furthermore, by computing the tripartite operator mutual information, we find that the information scrambling ability of holographic CFTs can be weakened by the finite size effect. We propose a modification of an effective model known as the line tension picture to explain the entanglement dynamics due to the strong scrambling effect and find a close relationship between this model and the wormhole (Einstein-Rosen Bridge) in the holographic bulk dual.

Subregion Spectrum Form Factor via Pseudo Entropy

We introduce a subsystem generalization of the spectral form factor via pseudo entropy, the von-Neumann entropy for the reduced transition matrix. We consider a transition matrix between the thermofield double state and its time-evolved state in two-dimensional conformal field theories, and study the time-dependence of the pseudo entropy for a single interval. We show that the real part of the pseudo entropy behaves similarly to the spectral form factor; it starts from the thermal entropy, initially drops to the minimum, then it starts increasing, and finally approaches the vacuum entanglement entropy. We also study the theory-dependence of its behavior by considering theories on a compact space.

Product of Random States and Spatial (Half-)Wormholes

We study how coarse-graining procedure of an underlying UV-complete quantum gravity gives rise to a connected geometry. It has been shown, quantum entanglement plays a key role in the emergence of such a geometric structure, namely a smooth Einstein-Rosen bridge. In this paper, we explore the possibility of the emergence of similar geometric structure from classical correlation, in the AdS/CFT setup. To this end, we consider a setup where we have two decoupled CFT Hilbert spaces, then choose a random typical state in one of the Hilbert spaces and the same state in the other. The total state in the fine-grained picture is of course a tensor product state, but averaging over the states sharing the same random coefficients creates a geometric connection for simple probes. Then, the apparent spatial wormhole causes a factorization puzzle. We argue that there is a spatial analog of half-wormholes, which resolves the puzzle in the similar way as the spacetime half-wormholes.

Aspects of Pseudo Entropy in Field Theories

In this article, we explore properties of pseudo entropy [1] in quantum field theories and spin systems from several approaches. Pseudo entropy is a generalization of entanglement entropy such that it depends on both an initial and final state and has a clear gravity dual via the AdS/CFT. We numerically analyze a class of free scalar field theories and the XY spin model. This reveals the basic properties of pseudo entropy in many-body systems, namely, the area law behavior, the saturation behavior, and the non-positivity of difference between the pseudo entropy and averaged entanglement entropy in the same quantum phase. In addition, our numerical analysis finds an example where the strong subadditivity of pseudo entropy gets violated. Interestingly we find that the non-positivity of the difference can be violated only if the initial and final states belong to different quantum phases. We also present analytical arguments which support these properties by both conformal field theoretic and holographic calculations. When the initial and final states belong to different topological phases, we expect a gapless mode localized along an interface, which enhances the pseudo entropy leading to the violation of the non-positivity of the difference. Moreover, we also compute the time evolution of pseudo entropy after a global quench, were we observe that the imaginary part of pseudo entropy shows interesting characteristc behavior.
