The geometry of fronts

We shall introduce the singular curvature function on cuspidal edges of surfaces, which is related to the Gauss-Bonnet formula and which characterizes the shape of cuspidal edges. Moreover, it is closely related to the behavior of the Gaussian curvature of a surface near cuspidal edges and swallowtails.

Flat fronts in hyperbolic 3-space and their caustics

After Galvez, Martinez and Milan discovered a (Weierstrass-type) holomorphic representation formula for flat surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space, the first, third and fourth authors here gave a framework for complete flat fronts with singularities in H^3. In the present work we broaden the notion of completeness to weak completeness, and of front to p-front. As a front is a p-front and completeness implies weak completeness, the new framework and results here apply to a more general class of flat surfaces. This more general class contains the caustics of flat fronts -- shown also to be flat by Roitman (who gave a holomorphic representation formula for them) -- which are an important class of surfaces and are generally not complete but only weakly complete. Furthermore, although flat fronts have globally defined normals, caustics might not, making them flat fronts only locally, and hence only p-fronts. Using the new framework, we obtain characterizations for caustics.

Maximal surfaces with singularities in Minkowski space

We shall investigate maximal surfaces in Minkowski 3-space with singularities. Although the plane is the only complete maximal surface without singular points, there are many other complete maximal surfaces with singularities and we show that they satisfy an Osserman-type inequality.

Singularities of flat fronts in hyperbolic 3-space

It is well-known that the unit cotangent bundle of any Riemannian manifold has a canonical contact structure. A surface in a Riemannian 3-manifold is called a (wave) front if it is the projection of a Legendrian immersion into the unit cotangent bundle. We shall give easily-computable criteria for a singular point on a front to be a cuspidal edge or a swallowtail. Using this, we shall prove that generically flat fronts in the hyperbolic 3-space admit only cuspidal edges and swallowtails. Moreover, we will show that every complete flat front (which is not rotationally symmetric) has associated parallel surfaces whose singularities consist of only cuspidal edges and swallowtails.

Flat fronts in hyperbolic 3-space

We shall investigate flat surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space with admissible singularities, called `flat fronts'. An Osserman-type inequality for complete flat fronts is shown. When equality holds in this inequality, we show that all the ends are embedded. Moreover, we shall give new examples for which equality holds.

An elementary proof of Small's formula for null curves in PSL(2,C) and an analogue for Legendrian curves in PSL(2,C)

For null curves in PSL(2,C), there exists a representation formula in terms of two meromorphic functions and their derivatives (Small's formula). In this paper, we give an elementary proof of Small's formula. Moreover, a similar formula for Legendrian curves in PSL(2,C) is given. As null curves in PSL(2,C) are related to mean curvature one surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space H^3, Legendrian curves are related to flat surfaces in H^3. So, as an application of Small-type formula for Lengendrian curves, we give new examples of flat surfaces in H^3.

Rough Surface Effect on Meissner Diamagnetism in Normal-layer of N-S Proximity-Contact System

Rough surface effect on the Meissner diamagnetic current in the normal layer of proximity contact N-S bi-layer is investigated in the clean limit. The diamagnetic current and the screening length are calculated by use of quasi-classical Green's function. We show that the surface roughness has a sizable effect, even when a normal layer width is large compared with the coherence length $ξ=v_{\rm F}/πT_{\rm c}$. The effect is as large as that of the impurity scattering and also as that of the finite reflection at the N-S interface.

An analogue of minimal surface theory in SL(n,C)/SU(n)

We shall discuss the class of surfaces with holomorphic right Gauss maps in non-compact duals of compact semisimple Lie groups (e.g. SL(n,C)/SU(n)), which contains minimal surfaces in R^n and constant mean curvature 1 surfaces in H^3. A Weierstrass type representation formula, and a Chern-Osserman type inequality for such surfaces are given.

Period problems for mean curvature one surfaces in H^3 (with application to surfaces of low total curvature)

We survey our recent results on classifying complete constant mean curvature 1 (CMC-1) surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space with low total curvature. There are two natural notions of "total curvature"-- one is the total absolute curvature which is the integral over the surface of the absolute value of the Gaussian curvature, and the other is the dual total absolute curvature which is the total absolute curvature of the dual CMC-1 surface. Here we discuss results on both notions (proven in two other papers by the authors), and we introduce some new results (with proofs) as well.

Minimal surfaces that attain equality in the Chern-Osserman inequality

In the previous paper, Takahasi and the authors generalized the theory of minimal surfaces in Euclidean n-space to that of surfaces with holomorphic Gauss map in certain class of non-compact symmetric spaces. It also includes the theory of constant mean curvature one surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space. Moreover, a Chern-Osserman type inequality for such surfaces was shown. Though its equality condition is not solved yet, the authors have noticed that the equality condition of the original Chern-Osserman inequality itself is not found in any literature except for the case n=3, in spite of its importance. In this paper, a simple geometric condition for minimal surfaces that attains equality in the Chern-Osserman inequality is given. The authors hope it will be a useful reference for readers.

Mean curvature 1 surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space with low total curvature I

A complete surface of constant mean curvature 1 (CMC-1) in hyperbolic 3-space with constant curvature -1 has two natural notions of "total curvature"-- one is the total absolute curvature which is the integral over the surface of the absolute value of the Gaussian curvature, and the other is the dual total absolute curvature which is the total absolute curvature of the dual CMC-1 surface. In this paper, we completely classify CMC-1 surfaces with dual total absolute curvature at most 4π. Moreover, we give new examples and partially classify CMC-1 surfaces with dual total absolute curvature at most 8π.

An inverse problem of the flux for minimal surfaces

For a complete minimal surface in the Euclidean 3-space, the so-called flux vector corresponds to each end. The flux vectors are balanced, i.e., the sum of those over all ends are zero. Consider the following inverse problem: For each balanced n vectors, find an n-end catenoid which attains given vectors as flux. Here, an n-end catenoid is a complete minimal surface of genus 0 with ends asymptotic to the catenoids. In this paper, the problem is reduced to solving algebraic equation. Using this reduction, it is shown that, when n=4, the inverse problem for 4-end catenoid has solutions for almost all balanced 4 vectors. Further obstructions for n-end catenoids with parallel flux vectors are also discussed.

General existence of minimal surfaces of genus zero with catenoidal ends and prescribed flux

For each end of complete minimal surface in the Euclidean 3-space, the flux vector is defined. It is well-known that the sum of the flux vector over all ends are zero. Consider the following inverse problem: For each balanced n-vectors, find an n-end catenoid which realizes these vectors as flux. Here, an n-end catenoid is a complete minimal surface of genus zero with ends asymptotic to the catenoids. In this paper, we show that the inverse problem can be solved for almost all balanced n vectors for arbitrary n, which is grater than 4. The assumption "almost all" is needed because nonexistence is known for special balanced vectors. We remark that in the case of n=4, the same result has been obtained by the authors (dg-ga/9709006). And the case n=3 is treated by Lopez and Berbanel.

Irreducible constant mean curvature 1 surfaces in hyperbolic space with positive genus

In this work we give a method for constructing a one-parameter family of complete CMC-1 (i.e. constant mean curvature 1) surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space that correspond to a given complete minimal surface with finite total curvature in Euclidean 3-space. We show that this one-parameter family of surfaces with the same symmetry properties exists for all given minimal surfaces satisfying certain conditions. The surfaces we construct in this paper are irreducible, and in the process of showing this, we also prove some results about the reducibility of surfaces. Furthermore, in the case that the surfaces are of genus 0, we are able to make some estimates on the range of the parameter for the one-parameter family.
