Corks, exotic 4-manifolds and genus functions

We prove that every 4-dimensional oriented handlebody without 3- and 4-handles can be modified to admit infinitely many exotic smooth structures, and moreover prove that their genus functions are pairwise equivalent. We furthermore show that for any 4-manifold admitting an embedding into a symplectic 4-manifold with weakly convex boundary, its genus function is algebraically realized as those of infinitely many pairwise exotic 4-manifolds. In addition, we prove that algebraic inequivalences of genus functions are stable under connected sums and boundary sums with a certain type of 4-manifolds having arbitrarily large second Betti numbers. Besides, we introduce a notion of genus function type for diffeomorphism invariants, and show that any such invariant shares properties similar to all the preceding results and yields lower bounds for the values of genus functions. As an application of our exotic 4-manifolds, we also prove that for any (possibly non-orientable) 4-manifold, every submanifold of codimension at most one satisfying a mild condition can be modified to admit infinitely many exotically knotted copies.

Notions of simple type for Bauer--Furuta invariants

By extending the notion of simple type for the Seiberg--Witten invariant of a 4-manifold, we introduce notions of BF blowup simple type and BF homogeneous type for the Bauer--Furuta invariant and study their applications. Specifically, we show that the existence of an immersed 2-sphere with a certain condition guarantees BF blowup simple type. As an application, we determine the Bauer--Furuta invariant of a 4-manifold obtained by a logarithmic transformation along a torus in a fishtail neighborhood. We also give constraints on gluing decompositions of 4-manifolds by using BF homogeneous type. To prove these results, we also give gluing formulae and an immersed adjunction inequality for Bauer--Furuta invariants.

Upper bounds for virtual dimensions of Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces

Given a closed four-manifold with $b_1=0$ and a prime number $p$, we prove that for any mod $p^r$ basic class, the virtual dimension of the Seiberg-Witten moduli space is bounded above by $2r(p-1)-2$ under some conditions on $r$ and $b_2^+$. As an application, we obtain adjunction inequalities for embedded surfaces with negative self-intersection number.

The simple type conjecture for mod 2 Seiberg-Witten invariants

We prove that, under a simple condition on the cohomology ring, every closed 4-manifold has mod 2 Seiberg-Witten simple type. This result shows that there exists a large class of topological 4-manifolds such that all smooth structures have mod 2 simple type, and yet some have non-vanishing (mod 2) Seiberg-Witten invariants. As corollaries, we obtain adjunction inequalities and show that, under a mild topological condition, every geometrically simply connected closed 4-manifold has the vanishing mod 2 Seiberg-Witten invariant for at least one orientation.

Geometrically simply connected 4-manifolds and stable cohomotopy Seiberg-Witten invariants

We show that every positive definite closed 4-manifold with $b_2^+>1$ and without 1-handles has a vanishing stable cohomotopy Seiberg-Witten invariant, and thus admits no symplectic structure. We also show that every closed oriented 4-manifold with $b_2^+\not\equiv 1$ and $b_2^-\not\equiv 1\pmod{4}$ and without 1-handles admits no symplectic structure for at least one orientation of the manifold. In fact, relaxing the 1-handle condition, we prove these results under more general conditions which are much easier to verify.

Nonexistence of twists and surgeries generating exotic 4-manifolds

It is well known that for any exotic pair of simply connected closed oriented 4-manifolds, one is obtained from the other by twisting a compact contractible submanifold via an involution on the boundary. By contrast, here we show that for each positive integer $n$, there exists a simply connected closed oriented 4-manifold $X$ such that, for any compact (not necessarily connected) codimension zero submanifold $W$ with $b_1(\partial W)<n$, the set of all smooth structures on $X$ cannot be generated from $X$ by twisting $W$ and varying the gluing map. As a corollary, we show that there exists no `universal' compact 4-manifold $W$ such that, for any simply connected closed 4-manifold $X$, the set of all smooth structures on $X$ is generated from a 4-manifold by twisting a fixed embedded copy of $W$ and varying the gluing map. Moreover, we give similar results for surgeries.

Corks, exotic 4-manifolds and knot concordance

We show that, for each integer n, there exist infinitely many pairs of n-framed knots representing homeomorphic but non-diffeomorphic (Stein) 4-manifolds, which are the simplest possible exotic 4-manifolds regarding handlebody structures. To produce these examples, we introduce a new description of cork twists and utilize satellite maps. As an application, we produce knots with the same 0-surgery which are not concordant for any orientations, disproving the Akbulut-Kirby conjecture given in 1978.

Calabi-Yau Caps, Uniruled Caps and Symplectic Fillings

We introduce symplectic Calabi-Yau caps to obtain new obstructions to exact fillings. In particular, it implies that any exact filling of the standard unit cotangent bundle of a hyperbolic surface has vanishing first Chern class and has the same integral homology and intersection form as its disk cotangent bundle. This gives evidence to a conjecture that all of its exact fillings are diffeomorphic to the disk cotangent bundle. As a result, we also obtain the first infinitely family of Stein fillable contact 3-manifolds with uniform bounds on the Betti numbers of its exact fillings but admitting minimal strong fillings of arbitrarily large $b_2$. Moreover, we introduce the notion of symplectic uniruled/adjunction caps and uniruled/adjunction contact structures to present a unified picture to the existing finiteness results on the topological invariants of exact/strong fillings of a contact 3-manifold. As a byproduct, we find new classes of contact 3-manifolds with the finiteness property and extend Wand's obstruction of planar contact 3-manifolds to uniruled/adjunction contact structures with complexity zero. structures with complexity zero.

Contact 5-manifolds and smooth structures on Stein 4-manifolds

We show that, under a certain condition, contact 5-manifolds can `coarsely' distinguish smooth structures on compact Stein 4-manifolds via contact open books. We also give a simple sufficient condition for an infinite family of Stein 4-manifolds to have an infinite subfamily of pairwise non-diffeomorphic Stein 4-manifolds. The proofs rely on the adjunction inequality. We remark that there are various examples of infinitely many pairwise exotic Stein 4-manifolds whose smooth structures can be distinguished by these results.

Maximal Thurston-Bennequin number and reducible Legendrian surgery

We give a method for constructing a Legendrian representative of a knot in $S^3$ which realizes its maximal Thurston-Bennequin number under a certain condition. The method utilizes Stein handle decompositions of $D^4$, and the resulting Legendrian representative is often very complicated (relative to the complexity of the topological knot type). As an application, we construct infinitely many knots in $S^3$ each of which yields a reducible 3-manifold by a Legendrian surgery in the standard tight contact structure. This disproves a conjecture of Lidman and Sivek.

Nonexistence of Stein structures on 4-manifolds and maximal Thurston-Bennequin numbers

For a 4-manifold represented by a framed knot in $S^3$, it has been well known that the 4-manifold admits a Stein structure if the framing is less than the maximal Thurston-Bennequin number of the knot. In this paper, we prove either the converse of this fact is false or there exists a compact contractible oriented smooth 4-manifold (with Stein fillable boundary) admitting no Stein structure. Note that an exotic smooth structure on $S^4$ exists if and only if there exists a compact contractible oriented smooth 4-manifold with $S^3$ boundary admitting no Stein structure.

Contact 5-manifolds admitting open books with exotic pages

We construct a contact 5-manifold supported by infinitely many distinct open books with the identity monodromy and pairwise exotic Stein pages (i.e. pages are pairwise homeomorphic but non-diffeomorphic Stein fillings of a fixed contact 3-manifold), moreover we describe a process of generating infinitely many such examples. In contrast to this result, on each of $\#_{n} S^{2}\times S^{3}$ and $\#_{n} S^{2}\tilde{\times} S^{3}$ $(n\geq 2)$ we construct infinitely many open books with pairwise exotic Stein pages (and identity monodromy) supporting mutually distinct contact structures.

Partial twists and exotic Stein fillings

We give an algorithm which produces infinitely many pairwise exotic Stein fillings of the same contact 3-manifolds, applying positive allowable Lefschetz fibrations over the disk. As a corollary, for a large class of Stein fillings, we realize the topological invariants (i.e. fundamental group, homology group, homology group of the boundary, and intersection form) of each filling as those of infinitely many pairwise exotic Stein fillings. Furthermore, applying the algorithm, we produce various contact 3-manifolds of support genus one each of which admits infinitely many pairwise exotic Stein fillings.

Infinitely many small exotic Stein fillings

We show that there exist infinitely many simply connected compact Stein 4-manifolds with b_2=2 such that they are all homeomorhic but mutually non-diffeomorphic, and they are Stein fillings of the same contact 3-manifold on their boundaries. We also describe their handlebody pictures.

Gluck twisting 4-manifolds with odd intersection form

We give a simple criterion when a Gluck twisting an odd smooth 4-manifold along a 2-sphere $S\subset X$ does not change its diffeomorphism type. We obtain this by handlebody techniques and plug twisting operation, getting a slightly stronger version of the known fact that Gluck twisting of a 2-sphere $S\subset X$ of a compact smooth 4-manifold with an odd spherical class, in the complement of S, does not change the diffeomorphism type of X. This is the best possible result on Gluck twisting manifolds with odd homology classes.

Stein 4-manifolds and corks

It is known that every compact Stein 4-manifolds can be embedded into a simply connected, minimal, closed, symplectic 4-manifold. By using this property, we discuss a new method of constructing corks. This method generates a large class of new corks including all the previously known ones. We prove that every one of these corks can knot infinitely many different ways in a closed smooth manifold, by showing that cork twisting along them gives different exotic smooth structures. We also give an example of infinitely many disjoint embeddings of a fixed cork into a non-compact 4-manifold which produce infinitely many exotic smooth structures. Furthermore, we construct arbitrary many simply connected compact codimension zero submanifolds of S^4 which are mutually homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic.

Cork twisting exotic Stein 4-manifolds

From any 4-dimensional oriented handlebody X without 3- and 4-handles and with b_2>0, we construct arbitrary many compact Stein 4-manifolds which are mutually homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to each other, so that their topological invariants (their fundamental groups, homology groups, boundary homology groups, and intersection forms) coincide with those of X. We also discuss the induced contact structures on their boundaries. Furthermore, for any smooth 4-manifold pair (Z,Y) such that the complement Z-intY is a handlebody without 3- and 4-handles and with b_2>0, we construct arbitrary many exotic embeddings of a compact 4-manifold Y' into Z, such that Y' has the same topological invariants as Y.

Nuclei and exotic 4-manifolds

We introduce a new generalization of Gompf nuclei and give applications. We construct infinitely many exotic smooth structures for a large class of compact 4-manifolds with boundary, regarding topological invariants. We prove that a large class of closed 3-manifolds (including disjoint unions of Stein fillable 3-manifolds) bound compact connected oriented 4-manifolds which admit infinitely many smooth structures. To detect smooth structures, we introduce a relative genus function. As a side result, we show that log transform and knot surgery of 4-manifolds do not admit any Stein structure, under a mild condition. Applying these results together with corks, we construct arbitrary many compact Stein 4-manifolds and infinitely many non-Stein 4-manifolds which are all homeomorphic but mutually non-diffeomorphic.
