Seshadri constants of Higgs Vector bundles

We define Seshadri constants for Higgs bundles on smooth projective varieties over algebraically closed fields of characteristic zero. This definition is inspired by and analogous to the notion of Seshadri constants for ordinary vector bundles. We prove a series of properties of Higgs Seshadri constants which are analogous to the corresponding properties in the case of ordinary Seshadri constants. In particular, we prove a Seshadri criterion for Higgs ampleness and prove that Higgs Seshadri constants can be computed by restriction to curves.

Rationality of Seshadri constants on blow-ups of ruled surfaces

In this note, we continue the study of Seshadri constants on blow-ups of Hirzebruch surfaces initiated in arXiv:2312.14555. Now we consider blow-ups of ruled surfaces more generally. We propose a conjecture for classifying all the negative self-intersection curves on the blow-up of a ruled surface at very general points, analogous to the $(-1)$-curves conjecture in $\mathbb{P}^2$. Assuming this conjecture is true, we exhibit an ample line bundle with an irrational Seshadri constant at a very general point on such a surface.

Effective cone of a Grassmann bundle over a curve defined over $\overline{\mathbb F}_p$

Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth projective curve defined over $\overline{\mathbb F}_p$ and $E$ a vector bundle on $X$ of rank at least two. For any $1\, \leq\, r\, <\, {\rm rank}(E)$, let ${\rm Gr}_r(E)$ be the Grassmann bundle over $X$ parametrizing all the $r$ dimensional quotients of the fibers of $E$. We prove that the effective cone in ${\rm NS}({\rm Gr}_r(E))\otimes_{\mathbb Z} {\mathbb R}$ coincides with the pseudo-effective cone in ${\rm NS}({\rm Gr}_r(E))\otimes_{\mathbb Z} {\mathbb R}$. When $r\,=\,1$ or ${\rm rank}(E)-1$, this was proved by A. Moriwaki.

Seshadri constants on blow-ups of Hirzebruch surfaces

Let $e,r \ge 0$ be integers and let $\mathbb{F}_e : = \mathbb{P}(\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^1} \oplus \mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^1}(-e))$ denote the Hirzebruch surface with invariant $e$. We compute the Seshadri constants of an ample line bundle at an arbitrary point of the $r$-point blow-up of $\mathbb{F}_e$ when $r \leq e-1$ and at a very general point when $r=e$ or $r=e+1$. We also discuss several conjectures on linear systems of curves on the blow-up of $\mathbb{F}_e$ at $r$ very general points.

Seshadri constants of curve configurations on surfaces

Let $X$ be a complex nonsingular projective surface and let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. We study multi-point Seshadri constants of $L$ at singular points of certain arrangements of curves on $X$. We pose some questions about such Seshadri constants and prove some results in the case of star arrangements of curves. We also study the configurational Seshadri constants for curve arrangements on surfaces and compare them with the usual Seshadri constants. We give several examples illustrating the properties that we study.

Some results on Seshadri constants of vector bundles

We study Seshadri constants of certain ample vector bundles on projective varieties. Our main motivation is the following question: Under what conditions are the Seshadri constants of ample vector bundles at least 1 at all points of the variety. We exhibit some conditions under which this question has an affirmative answer. We primarily consider ample bundles on projective spaces and Hirzebruch surfaces. We also show that Seshadri constants of ample vector bundles can be arbitrarily small.

Seshadri constants of parabolic vector bundles

Let $X$ be a complex projective variety, and let $E_{\ast}$ be a parabolic vector bundle on $X$. We introduce the notion of \textit{parabolic Seshadri constants} of $E_{\ast}$. It is shown that these constants are analogous to the classical Seshadri constants of vector bundles, in particular, they have parallel definitions and properties. We prove a Seshadri criterion for parabolic ampleness of $E_{\ast}$ in terms of parabolic Seshadri constants. We also compute parabolic Seshadri constants for symmetric powers and tensor products of parabolic vector bundles.

Seshadri constants on some flag bundles

Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective curve and let $E$ be a vector bundle on $X$ which is not semistable. We consider a flag bundle $\pi: \text{Fl}(E) \to X$ parametrizing certain flags of fibers of $E$. The dimensions of the successive quotients of the flags are determined by the ranks of vector bundles appearing in the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of $E$. We compute the Seshadri constants of nef line bundles on $\text{Fl}(E)$.

On the Seshadri constants of equivariant bundles over Bott-Samelson varieties and wonderful compactifications

We study torus-equivariant vector bundles $E$ on a complex projective variety $X$ which is either a Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety or a wonderful compactification of a complex symmetric variety of minimal rank. We show that $E$ is nef (respectively, ample) if and only if its restriction to every torus--invariant curve in $X$ is nef (respectively, ample). We also compute the Seshadri constants $\varepsilon(E,x)$, where $x\, \in\, X$ is any point fixed by the action of a maximal torus.

Seshadri constants on Bott towers

For a positive integer $n$, let $X_n \to X_{n-1} \to \ldots \to X_2 \to X_1 \to X_0$ be a Bott tower of height $n$, and let $L$ be a nef line bundle on $X_n$. We compute Seshadri constants $\varepsilon(X_n,L,x)$ of $L$ at any point $x \in X_n$ under some conditions.

Seshadri constants on some Quot schemes

Let $E$ be a vector bundle of rank $n$ on $\mathbb{P}^1$. Fix a positive integer $d$. Let $\mathcal{Q}(E,d)$ denote the Quot scheme of torsion quotients of $E$ of degree $d$ and let $Gr(E,d)$ denote the Grassmann bundle that parametrizes the $d$-dimensional quotients of the fibers of $E$. We compute Seshadri constants of ample line bundles on $\mathcal{Q}(E,d)$ and $Gr(E,d)$.

Positivity of vector bundles on homogeneous varieties

We study the following question: Given a vector bundle on a projective variety $X$ such that the restriction of $E$ to every closed curve $C \,\subset\, X$ is ample, under what conditions $E$ is ample? We first consider the case of an abelian variety $X$. If $E$ is a line bundle on $X$, then we answer the question in the affirmative. When $E$ is of higher rank, we show that the answer is affirmative under some conditions on $E$. We then study the case of $X \,=\, G/P$, where $G$ is a reductive complex affine algebraic group, and $P$ is a parabolic subgroup of $G$. In this case, we show that the answer to our question is affirmative if $E$ is $T$--equivariant, where $T\, \subset\, P$ is a fixed maximal torus. Finally, we compute the Seshadri constant for such vector bundles defined on $G/P$.

Weyl and Zariski chambers on projective surfaces

Let $X$ be a nonsingular complex projective surface. The Weyl and Zariski chambers give two interesting decompositions of the big cone of $X$. We study these two decompositions and determine when a Weyl chamber is contained in the interior of a Zariski chamber and vice versa. We also determine when a Weyl chamber can intersect non-trivially with a Zariski chamber.

Negative curves on special rational surfaces

We study negative curves on surfaces obtained by blowing up special configurations of points in the complex projective palne. Our main results concern the following configurations: very general points on a cubic, 3-torsion points on an elliptic curve and nine Fermat points. As a consequence of our analysis, we also show that the Bounded Negativity Conjecture holds for the surfaces we consider. The note contains also some problems for future attention.

Rationality of Seshadri constants on general blow ups of $\mathbb{P}^2$

Let $X$ be a projective surface and let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. The global Seshadri constant $\varepsilon(L)$ of $L$ is defined as the infimum of Seshadri constants $\varepsilon(L,x)$ as $x\in X$ varies. It is an interesting question to ask if $\varepsilon(L)$ is a rational number for any pair $(X, L)$. We study this question when $X$ is a blow up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ at $r \ge 0$ very general points and $L$ is an ample line bundle on $X$. For each $r$ we define a $\textit{submaximality threshold}$ which governs the rationality or irrationality of $\varepsilon(L)$. We state a conjecture which strengthens the SHGH Conjecture and assuming that this conjecture is true we determine the submaximality threshold.

Bounded negativity and Harbourne constants on ruled surfaces

Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface and let $\mathcal{C}$ be an arrangement of curves on $X$. The Harbourne constant of $\mathcal{C}$ was defined as a way to investigate the occurrence of curves of negative self-intersection on blow ups of $X$. This is related to the bounded negativity conjecture which predicts that the self-intersection number of all reduced curves on a surface is bounded below by a constant. We consider a geometrically ruled surface $X$ over a smooth curve and give lower bounds for the Harbourne constants of transversal arrangements of curves on $X$.

Real and complex supersolvable line arrangements in the projective plane

We study supersolvable line arrangements in ${\mathbb P}^2$ over the reals and over the complex numbers, as the first step toward a combinatorial classification. Our main results show that a nontrivial (i.e., not a pencil or near pencil) complex line arrangement cannot have more than 4 modular points, and if all of the crossing points of a complex line arrangement have multiplicity 3 or 4, then the arrangement must have 0 modular points (i.e., it cannot be supersolvable). This provides at least a little evidence for our conjecture that every nontrivial complex supersolvable line arrangement has at least one point of multiplicity 2, which in turn is a step toward the much stronger conjecture of Anzis and Tohǎneanu that every nontrivial complex supersolvable line arrangement with $s$ lines has at least $s/2$ points of multiplicity 2.

Seshadri constants and Grassmann bundles over curves

Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective curve, and let $E$ be a vector bundle on $X$ which is not semistable. For a suitably chosen integer $r$, let $\text{Gr}(E)$ be the Grassmann bundle over $X$ that parametrizes the quotients of the fibers of $E$ of dimension $r$. Assuming some numerical conditions on the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of $E$, we study Seshadri constants of ample line bundles on $\text{Gr}(E)$. In many cases, we give the precise value of Seshadri constant. Our results generalize various known results for ${\rm rank}(E)=2$.
