Numerical evidence for a chiral spin liquid in the XXZ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice at $m=\frac{2}{3}$ magnetization

We perform an exact diagonalization study of the spin-$1/2$ XXZ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice at finite magnetization $m = \frac{2}{3}$ with an emphasis on the XY point ($J_z = 0$), and in the presence of a small chiral term. Recent analytic work by Kumar, Sun and Fradkin [Phys. Rev. B 90, 174409 (2014)] on the same model, using a newly developed flux attachment transformation, predicts a plateau at this value of the magnetization described by a chiral spin liquid (CSL) with a spin Hall conductance of $σ_{xy} = \frac{1}{2}$. Such a state is topological in nature, has a ground state degeneracy and exhibits fractional excitations. We analyze the degeneracy structure in the low energy manifold, identify the candidate topological states and use them to compute the modular matrices and Chern numbers all of which strongly agree with expected theoretical behavior for the $σ_{xy} = \frac{1}{2}$ CSL. We argue that the evidence suggests the CSL is robust even in the limit of zero external chirality.

Spectra and probability distributions of thermal flux in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection

The spectra of turbulent heat flux $\mathrm{H}(k)$ in Rayleigh-Bénard convection with and without uniform rotation are presented. The spectrum $\mathrm{H}(k)$ scales with wave number $k$ as $\sim k^{-2}$. The scaling exponent is almost independent of the Taylor number $\mathrm{Ta}$ and Prandtl number $\mathrm{Pr}$ for higher values of the reduced Rayleigh number $r$ ($ > 10^3$). The exponent, however, depends on $\mathrm{Ta}$ and $\mathrm{Pr}$ for smaller values of $r$ ($<10^3$). The probability distribution functions of the local heat fluxes are non-Gaussian and have exponential tails.

Measuring the weak mixing angle with the P2 experiment at MESA

The P2 experiment in Mainz aims to measure the weak mixing angle in electron- proton scattering to a precision of 0.13 %. In order to suppress uncertainties due to proton structure and contributions from box graphs, both a low average momentum transfer $Q^2$ of $4.5\cdot 10^{-3}$ GeV$^2/c^2$ and a low beam energy of 155 MeV are chosen. In order to collect the enormous statistics required for this measurement, the new Mainz Energy Recovery Superconducting Accelerator (MESA) is being constructed. These proceedings describe the motivation for the measurement, the experimental and accelerator challenges and how we plan to tackle them.

Chiral spin liquids on the kagome Lattice

We study the nearest neighbor $XXZ$ Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. Here we consider the effects of several perturbations: a) a chirality term, b) a Dzyaloshinski-Moriya term, and c) a ring-exchange type term on the bowties of the kagome lattice, and inquire if they can suppport chiral spin liquids as ground states. The method used to study these Hamiltonians is a flux attachment transformation that maps the spins on the lattice to fermions coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field on the kagome lattice. This transformation requires us to consistently define a Chern-Simons term on the kagome lattice. We find that the chirality term leads to a chiral spin liquid even in the absence of an uniform magnetic field, with an effective spin Hall conductance of $\sxy = \frac{1}{2}$ in the regime of $XY$ anisotropy. The Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya term also leads a similar chiral spin liquid but only when this term is not too strong. An external magnetic field also has the possibility of giving rise to additional plateaus which also behave like chiral spin liquids in the $XY$ regime. Finally, we consider the effects of a ring-exchange term and find that, provided its coupling constant is large enough, it may trigger a phase transition into a chiral spin liquid by the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal invariance.

A discretized Chern-Simons gauge theory on arbitrary graphs

In this paper, we show how to discretize the abelian Chern-Simons gauge theory on generic planar lattices/graphs (with or without translational symmetries) embedded in arbitrary 2D closed orientable manifolds. We find that, as long as a one-to-one correspondence between vertices and faces can be defined on the graph such that each face is paired up with a neighboring vertex (and vice versa), a discretized Chern-Simons theory can be constructed consistently. We further verify that all the essential properties of the Chern-Simons gauge theory are preserved in the discretized setup. In addition, we find that the existence of such a one-to-one correspondence is not only a sufficient condition for discretizing a Chern-Simons gauge theory but, for the discretized theory to be nonsingular and to preserve some key properties of the topological field theory, this correspondence is also a necessary one. A specific example will then be provided, in which we discretize the Chern-Simons gauge theory on a tetrahedron.

A model for Rayleigh-Bénard magnetoconvection

A model for three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection in low-Prandtl-number fluids near onset with rigid horizontal boundaries in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is constructed and analyzed in detail. The kinetic energy $K$, the convective entropy $Φ$ and the convective heat flux ($Nu-1$) show scaling behaviour with $ε= r-1$ near onset of convection, where $r$ is the reduced Rayleigh number. The model is also used to investigate various magneto-convective structures close to the onset. Straight rolls, which appear at the primary instability, become unstable with increase in $r$ and bifurcate to three-dimensional structures. The straight rolls become periodically varying wavy rolls or quasiperiodically varying structures in time with increase in $r$ depending on the values of Prandtl number $Pr$. They become irregular in time, with increase in $r$. These standing wave solutions bifurcate first to periodic and then quasiperiodic traveling wave solutions, as $r$ is raised further. The variations of the critical Rayleigh number $Ra_{os}$ and the frequency $ω_{os}$ at the onset of the secondary instability with $Pr$ are also studied for different values of Chandrasekhar's number $Q$.

Frequency spectra of turbulent thermal convection with uniform rotation

The frequency spectra of the entropy and kinetic energy along with the power spectrum of the thermal flux are computed from direct numerical simulations for turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection with uniform rotation about a vertical axis in low-Prandtl-number fluids ($\mathrm{Pr} < 0.6$). Simulations are done for convective Rossby numbers $\mathrm{Ro} \ge 0.2$. The temporal fluctuations of these global quantities show two scaling regimes: (i) $ω^{-2}$ at higher frequencies for all values of $\mathrm{Ro}$ and (ii) $ω^{-γ_1}$ at intermediate frequencies with $γ_1 \approx 4$ for $\mathrm{Ro} > 1$, while $4 < γ_1 < 6.6$ for $0.2 \le \mathrm{Ro} < 1$.

Chern-Simons theory of the magnetization plateaus of the spin-1/2 quantum XXZ Heisenberg model on Kagome Lattice

Frustrated spin systems on Kagome lattices have long been considered to be a promising candidate for realizing exotic spin liquid phases. Recently, there has been a lot of renewed interest in these systems with the discovery of materials such as Volborthite and Herbertsmithite that have Kagome like structures. In the presence of an external magnetic field, these frustrated systems can give rise to magnetization plateaus of which the plateau at $m=\frac{1}{3}$ is considered to be the most prominent. Here we study the problem of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 quantum XXZ Heisenberg model on a Kagome lattice by using a Jordan-Wigner transformation that maps the spins onto a problem of fermions coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field. This mapping relies on being able to define a consistent Chern-Simons term on the lattice. Using a recently developed method to rigorously extend the Chern-Simons term to the frustrated Kagome lattice we can now formalize the Jordan-Wigner transformation on the Kagome lattice. We then discuss the possible phases that can arise at the mean-field level from this mapping and focus specifically on the case of $\frac{1}{3}$-filling ($m=\frac{1}{3}$ plateau) and analyze the effects of fluctuations in our theory. We show that in the regime of $XY$ anisotropy the ground state at the $1/3$ plateau is equivalent to a bosonic fractional quantum Hall Laughlin state with filling fraction $1/2$ and that at the $5/9$ plateau it is equivalent to the first bosonic Jain daughter state at filling fraction $2/3$.

Zero-Prandtl-number convection with slow rotation

We present the results of our investigations of the primary instability and the flow patterns near onset in zero-Prandtl-number Rayleigh-Bénard convection with uniform rotation about a vertical axis. The investigations are carried out using direct numerical simulations of the hydrodynamic equations with stress-free horizontal boundaries in rectangular boxes of size $(2π/k_x) \times (2π/k_y) \times 1$ for different values of the ratio $η= k_x/k_y$. The primary instability is found to depend on $η$ and $Ta$. Wavy rolls are observed at the primary instability for smaller values of $η$ ($1/\sqrt{3} \le η\le 2$ except at $η= 1$) and for smaller values of $Ta$. We observed Küppers-Lortz (KL) type patterns at the primary instability for $η= 1/\sqrt{3}$ and $ Ta \ge 40$. The fluid patterns are found to exhibit the phenomenon of bursting, as observed in experiments [Bajaj et al. Phys. Rev. E {\bf 65}, 056309 (2002)]. Periodic wavy rolls are observed at onset for smaller values of $Ta$, while KL-type patterns are observed for $ Ta \ge 100$ for $η=\sqrt{3}$. In case of $η= 2$, wavy rolls are observed for smaller values of $Ta$ and KL-type patterns are observed for $25 \le Ta \le 575$. Quasi-periodically varying patterns are observed in the oscillatory regime ($Ta > 575$). The behavior is quite different at $η= 1$. A time dependent competition between two sets of mutually perpendicular rolls is observed at onset for all values of $Ta$ in this case. Fluid patterns are found to burst periodically as well as chaotically in time. It involved a homoclinic bifurcation. We have also made a couple of low-dimensional models to investigate bifurcations for $η= 1$, which is used to investigate the sequence of bifurcations.

Rayleigh-Bénard convection with uniform vertical magnetic field

We present the results of direct numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard convection in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field near instability onset. We have done simulations in boxes with square as well as rectangular cross-sections in the horizontal plane. We have considered horizontal aspect ratio $η= L_y/L_x =1$ and $2$. The onset of the primary and secondary instabilities are strongly suppressed in the presence of the vertical magnetic field for $η=1$. The Nusselt number $\mathrm{Nu}$ scales with Rayleigh number $\mathrm{Ra}$ close to the primary instability as $[\mathrm{\{Ra - Ra_c (Q)\}/Ra_c (Q)} ]^{0.91}$, where $\mathrm{Ra_c (Q)}$ is the threshold for onset of stationary convection at a given value of the Chandrasekhar number $\mathrm{Q}$. $\mathrm{Nu}$ also scales with $\mathrm{Ra/Q}$ as $(\mathrm{Ra/Q})^μ$. The exponent $μ$ varies in the range $0.39 \le μ\le 0.57$ for $\mathrm{Ra/Q} \ge 25$. The primary instability is stationary as predicted by Chandrasekhar. The secondary instability is temporally periodic for $\mathrm{Pr}=0.1$ but quasiperiodic for $\mathrm{Pr} = 0.025$ for moderate values of $\mathrm{Q}$. Convective patterns for higher values of $\mathrm{Ra}$ consist of periodic, quasiperiodic and chaotic wavy rolls above onset of the secondary instability for $η=1$. In addition, stationary as well as time dependent cross-rolls are observed, as $\mathrm{Ra}$ is further raised. The ratio $r_{\circ}/\mathrm{Pr}$ is independent of $\mathrm{Q}$ for smaller values of $\mathrm{Q}$. The delay in onset of the oscillatory instability is significantly reduced in a simulation box with $η=2$. We also observe inclined stationary rolls for smaller values of $\mathrm{Q}$ for $η=2$.

Early Development of UVM based Verification Environment of Image Signal Processing Designs using TLM Reference Model of RTL

With semiconductor industry trend of smaller the better, from an idea to a final product, more innovation on product portfolio and yet remaining competitive and profitable are few criteria which are culminating into pressure and need for more and more innovation for CAD flow, process management and project execution cycle. Project schedules are very tight and to achieve first silicon success is key for projects. This necessitates quicker verification with better coverage matrix. Quicker Verification requires early development of the verification environment with wider test vectors without waiting for RTL to be available. Oscillatory instability and fluid patterns in low-Prandtl-number Rayleigh-Bénard convection with uniform rotation

We present the results of direct numerical simulations of flow patterns in a low-Prandtl-number ($Pr = 0.1$) fluid above the onset of oscillatory convection in a Rayleigh-Bénard system rotating uniformly about a vertical axis. Simulations were carried out in a periodic box with thermally conducting and stress-free top and bottom surfaces. We considered a rectangular box ($L_x \times L_y \times 1$) and a wide range of Taylor numbers ($750 \le Ta \le 5000$) for the purpose. The horizontal aspect ratio $η= L_y/L_x$ of the box was varied from $0.5$ to $10$. The primary instability appeared in the form of two-dimensional standing waves for shorter boxes ($0.5 \le η< 1$ and $1 < η< 2$). The flow patterns observed in boxes with $η= 1$ and $η= 2$ were different from those with $η< 1$ and $1 < η< 2$. We observed a competition between two sets of mutually perpendicular rolls at the primary instability in a square cell ($η= 1$) for $Ta < 2700$, but observed a set of parallel rolls in the form of standing waves for $Ta \geq 2700$. The three-dimensional convection was quasiperiodic or chaotic for $750 \le Ta < 2700$, and then bifurcated into a two-dimensional periodic flow for $Ta \ge 2700$. The convective structures consisted of the appearance and disappearance of straight rolls, rhombic patterns, and wavy rolls inclined at an angle $ϕ= \fracπ{2} - \arctan{(η^{-1})}$ with the straight rolls.

Entropy and energy spectra in low-Prandtl-number convection with rotation

We present results for entropy and kinetic energy spectra computed from direct numerical simulations for low-Prandtl-number ($Pr < 1$) turbulent flow in Rayleigh-Bénard convection with uniform rotation about a vertical axis. The simulations are performed in a three-dimensional periodic box for a range of Taylor number ($ 0 \leq Ta \leq 10^8$) and reduced Rayleigh number $r = Ra/Ra_{\circ} (Ta, Pr)$ ($1.0 \times 10^2 \le r \le 5.0 \times 10^3$). The Rossby number $Ro$ varies in the range $1.34 \le Ro \le 73$. The entropy spectrum $E_θ(k)$ shows bi-splitting into two branches for lower values of wave number $k$. The entropy in the lower branch scales with $k$ as $k^{-1.4\pm 0.1}$ for $r > 10^3$ for the rotation rates considered here. The entropy in the upper branch also shows scaling behavior with $k$, but the scaling exponent decreases with increasing $Ta$ for all $r$. The energy spectrum $E_v(k)$ is also found to scale with the wave number $k$ as $k^{-1.4\pm 0.1}$ for $r > 10^3$. The scaling exponent for the energy spectrum and the lower branch of the entropy spectrum vary between $-1.7$ to $-2.4$ for lower values of $r$ ($< 10^3$). We also provide some simple arguments based on the variation of the Kolmogorov picture to support the results of simulations.

Fundamental Symmetry Tests with Nucleons, Nuclei, and Atoms: A Snowmass Report

Present and prospective fundamental symmetry tests with nucleons, nuclei and atoms are probing for possible new physics at the TeV scale and beyond. These ongoing and proposed table-top as well as accelerator-based experiments are thus a vital component of the Intensity Frontier. At the same time, these tests provide increasingly sophisticated probes of long-distance strong interactions that are responsible for the structure of nucleons and nuclei. In this community report, some of the most compelling opportunities with nucleons, nuclei and atoms are summarized, drawing largely on input received from the nuclear and atomic physics communities. In particular, this report includes many contributions submitted to two recent Intensity Frontier Workshops.

Pattern dynamics near homoclinic bifurcation in Rayleigh-Bénard convection

We report for the first time the pattern dynamics in the vicinity of an inverse homoclinic bifurcation in an extended dissipative system. We observe, in direct numerical simulations of three dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection, a spontaneous breaking of a competition of two mutually perpendicular sets of oscillating cross rolls to one of two possible sets of oscillating cross rolls as the Rayleigh number is raised above a critical value. The time period of the cross-roll patterns diverges, and shows scaling behavior near the bifurcation point. This is an example of a transition from nonlocal to local pattern dynamics near an inverse homoclinic bifurcation. We also present a simple four-mode model that captures the pattern dynamics quite well.

Role of uniform horizontal magnetic field on convective flow

The effect of uniform magnetic field applied along a fixed horizontal direction in Rayleigh-Bénard convection in low-Prandtl-number fluids has been studied using a low dimensional model. The model shows the onset of convection (primary instability) in the form of two dimensional stationary rolls in the absence of magnetic field, when the Rayleigh number $R$ is raised above a critical value $R_c$. The flow becomes three dimensional at slightly higher values of Rayleigh number via wavy instability. These wavy rolls become chaotic for slightly higher values of $R$ in low-Prandtl-number ($P_r$) fluids. A uniform magnetic field along horizontal plane strongly affects all kinds of convective flows observed at higher values of $R$ in its absence. As the magnetic field is raised above certain value, it orients the convective rolls in its own direction. Although the horizontal magnetic field does not change the threshold for the primary instability, it affects the threshold for secondary (wavy) instability. It inhibits the onset of wavy instability. The critical Rayleigh number $R_o (Q,P_r)$ at the onset of wavy instability, which depends on Chandrasekhar's number $Q$ and $P_r$, increases monotonically with $Q$ for a fixed value of $P_r$. The dimensionless number $R_o (Q, P_r)/(R_c Q P_r)$ scales with $Q$ as $Q^{-1}$. A stronger magnetic field suppresses chaos and makes the flow two dimensional with roll pattern aligned along its direction.
