Eternal traversable wormholes in three dimensions

We consider three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant coupled to a large number of light matter fields dual to relevant operators. By imposing suitable boundary conditions on the matter fields we find eternal traversable wormhole deformations of the BTZ black hole, leading to a three-dimensional analogue of the AdS$_{2}$ eternal traversable wormhole found by Maldacena and Qi. We further identify the field theory of boundary gravitons in this setting, which we then use to compute the spectrum of gravitational fluctuations.

Isometric evolution in de Sitter quantum gravity

We study time evolution in two simple models of de Sitter quantum gravity, Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity and a minisuperspace approximation to Einstein gravity with a positive cosmological constant. In the former we find that time evolution is isometric rather than unitary, and find suggestions that this is true in Einstein gravity as well. The states that are projected out under time evolution are initial conditions that crunch. Along the way we establish a matrix model dual for Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity where the dilaton varies on the boundary.

AdS$_3$ gravity and random CFT

We compute the path integral of three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant on spaces which are topologically a torus times an interval. These are Euclidean wormholes, which smoothly interpolate between two asymptotically Euclidean AdS$_3$ regions with torus boundary. From our results we obtain the spectral correlations between BTZ black hole microstates near threshold, as well as extract the spectral form factor at fixed momentum, which has linear growth in time with small fluctuations around it. The low-energy limit of these correlations is precisely that of a double-scaled random matrix ensemble with Virasoro symmetry. Our findings suggest that if pure three-dimensional gravity has a holographic dual, then the dual is an ensemble which generalizes random matrix theory.

A precision test of averaging in AdS/CFT

We reconsider the role of wormholes in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We focus on Euclidean wormholes that connect two asymptotically AdS or hyperbolic regions with $\mathbb{S}^1\times \mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ boundary. There is no solution to Einstein's equations of this sort, as the wormholes possess a modulus that runs to infinity. To find on-shell wormholes we must stabilize this modulus, which we can do by fixing the total energy on the two boundaries. Such a wormhole gives the saddle point approximation to a non-standard problem in quantum gravity, where we fix two asymptotic boundaries and constrain the common energy. Crucially the dual quantity does not factorize even when the bulk is dual to a single CFT, on account of the fixed energy constraint. From this quantity we extract a smeared version of the microcanonical spectral form factor. For a chaotic theory this quantity is self-averaging, i.e. well-approximated by averaging over energy windows, or over coupling constants. We go on to give a precision test involving the microcanonical spectral form factor where the two replicas have slightly different coupling constants. In chaotic theories this form factor is known to smoothly decay at a rate universally predicted in terms of one replica physics, provided that there is an average either over a window or over couplings. We compute the expected decay rate for holographic theories, and the form factor from a wormhole, and the two exactly agree for a wide range of two-derivative effective field theories in AdS. This gives a precision test of averaging in AdS/CFT. Our results interpret a number of confusing facts about wormholes and factorization in AdS and suggest that we should regard gravitational effective field theory as a mesoscopic description, analogous to semiclassical mesoscopic descriptions of quantum chaotic systems.

Large $N$ fractons

We consider theories of fractons with $N$ fields. These theories have exotic spacetime symmetries, including a conserved dipole moment. Using collective fields we solve these models to leading order in large $N$. The large $N$ solution reveals that these models are strongly correlated, and that interactions generate a momentum-dependent self-energy. Dipole symmetry is spontaneously broken throughout the phase diagram of these models, leading to a low-energy Goldstone description of what we dub "dipole superfluids."

Fractons in curved space

We consistently couple simple continuum field theories with fracton excitations to curved spacetime backgrounds. We consider homogeneous and isotropic fracton field theories, with a conserved $U(1)$ charge and dipole moment. Coupling to background fields allows us to consistently define a stress-energy tensor for these theories and obtain the respective Ward identities. Along the way, we find evidence for a mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly in the symmetric tensor gauge theory which naturally couples to conserved dipoles. Our results generalise to systems with arbitrarily higher conserved moments, in particular, a conserved quadrupole moment.

Wormholes and black hole microstates in AdS/CFT

It has long been known that the coarse-grained approximation to the black hole density of states can be computed using classical Euclidean gravity. In this work we argue for another entry in the dictionary between Euclidean gravity and black hole physics, namely that Euclidean wormholes describe a coarse-grained approximation to the energy level statistics of black hole microstates. To do so we use the method of constrained instantons to obtain an integral representation of wormhole amplitudes in Einstein gravity and in full-fledged AdS/CFT. These amplitudes are non-perturbative corrections to the two-boundary problem in AdS quantum gravity. The full amplitude is likely UV sensitive, dominated by small wormholes, but we show it admits an integral transformation with a macroscopic, weakly curved saddle-point approximation. The saddle is the "double cone" geometry of Saad, Shenker, and Stanford, with fixed moduli. In the boundary description this saddle appears to dominate a smeared version of the connected two-point function of the black hole density of states, and suggests level repulsion in the microstate spectrum. Using these methods we further study Euclidean wormholes in pure Einstein gravity and in IIB supergravity on Euclidean AdS$_5\times\mathbb{S}^5$. We address the perturbative stability of these backgrounds and study brane nucleation instabilities in 10d supergravity. In particular, brane nucleation instabilities of the Euclidean wormholes are lifted by the analytic continuation required to obtain the Lorentzian spectral form factor from gravity. Our results indicate a factorization paradox in AdS/CFT.

Gravitational Constrained Instantons

We find constrained instantons in Einstein gravity with and without a cosmological constant. These configurations are not saddle points of the Einstein-Hilbert action, yet they contribute to non-perturbative processes in quantum gravity. In some cases we expect that they give the dominant contribution from spacetimes with certain fixed topologies. With negative cosmological constant, these metrics describe wormholes connecting two asymptotic regions. We find many examples of such wormhole metrics and for certain symmetric configurations establish their perturbative stability. We expect that the Euclidean versions of these wormholes encode the energy level statistics of AdS black hole microstates. In the de Sitter and flat space settings we find new homogeneous and isotropic bounce and big bang/crunch cosmologies.

AdS$_3$ wormholes from a modular bootstrap

In recent work we computed the path integral of three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant on spaces which are topologically a torus times an interval. Here we employ a modular bootstrap to show that the amplitude is completely fixed by consistency conditions and a few basic inputs from gravity. This bootstrap is notably for an ensemble of CFTs, rather than for a single instance. We also compare the 3d gravity result with the Narain ensemble. The former is well-approximated at low temperature by a random matrix theory ansatz, and we conjecture that this behavior is generic for an ensemble of CFTs at large central charge with a chaotic spectrum of heavy operators.

Chern-Simons dualities with multiple flavors at large $N$

We study $U(N)_k$ Chern-Simons theory coupled to fundamental fermions and scalars in a large $N$ `t Hooft limit. We compute the thermal free energy at high temperature, as well as two- and three-point functions of simple gauge-invariant operators. Our findings support various dualities between Chern-Simons-matter theories with $\mathcal{N}=0,1,$ and $2$ supersymmetry.

From the Weyl Anomaly to Entropy of Two-Dimensional Boundaries and Defects

We study whether the relations between the Weyl anomaly, entanglement entropy (EE), and thermal entropy of a two-dimensional (2D) conformal field theory (CFT) extend to 2D boundaries of 3D CFTs, or 2D defects of $D \geq 3$ CFTs. The Weyl anomaly of a 2D boundary or defect defines two or three central charges, respectively. One of these, $b$, obeys a c-theorem, as in 2D CFT. For a 2D defect, we show that another, $d_2$, interpreted as the defect's `conformal dimension,' must be non-negative by the Averaged Null Energy Condition (ANEC). We show that the EE of a sphere centered on a planar defect has a logarithmic contribution from the defect fixed by $b$ and $d_2$. Using this and known holographic results, we compute $b$ and $d_2$ for 1/2-BPS surface operators in the maximally supersymmetric (SUSY) 4D and 6D CFTs. The results are consistent with $b$'s c-theorem. Via free field and holographic examples we show that no universal `Cardy formula' relates the central charges to thermal entropy.

Scrambling in nearly thermalized states at large central charge

We study $2d$ conformal field theory (CFT) at large central charge $c$ and finite temperature $T$ with heavy operators inserted at spatial infinity. The heavy operators produce a nearly thermalized steady state at an effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}\leq T$. Under some assumptions, we find an effective Schwarzian-like description of these states and, when they exist, their gravity duals. We use this description to compute the Lyapunov exponents for light operators to be $2πT_{\rm eff}$, so that scrambling is suppressed by the heavy insertions.

A panoply of Schwinger-Keldysh transport

We classify all possible allowed constitutive relations of relativistic fluids in a statistical mechanical limit using the Schwinger-Keldysh effective action for hydrodynamics. We find that microscopic unitarity enforces genuinely new constraints on the allowed transport coefficients that are invisible in the classical hydrodynamic description; they are not implied by the second law or the Onsager relations. We term these conditions Schwinger-Keldysh positivity and provide explicit examples of the various allowed terms.

A theory of reparameterizations for AdS$_3$ gravity

We rewrite the Chern-Simons description of pure gravity on global AdS$_3$ and on Euclidean BTZ black holes as a quantum field theory on the AdS boundary. The resulting theory is (two copies of) the path integral quantization of a certain coadjoint orbit of the Virasoro group, and it should be regarded as the quantum field theory of the boundary gravitons. This theory respects all of the conformal field theory axioms except one: it is not modular invariant. The coupling constant is $1/c$ with $c$ the central charge, and perturbation theory in $1/c$ encodes loop contributions in the gravity dual. The QFT is a theory of reparametrizations analogous to the Schwarzian description of nearly AdS$_2$ gravity, and has several features including: (i) it is ultraviolet-complete; (ii) the torus partition function is the vacuum Virasoro character, which is one-loop exact by a localization argument; (iii) it reduces to the Schwarzian theory upon compactification; (iv) it provides a powerful new tool for computing Virasoro blocks at large $c$ via a diagrammatic expansion. We use the theory to compute several observables to one-loop order in the bulk, including the "heavy-light" limit of the identity block. We also work out some generalizations of this theory, including the boundary theory which describes fluctuations around two-sided eternal black holes.

Dissipative hydrodynamics in superspace

We construct a Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theory for relativistic hydrodynamics for charged matter in a thermal background using a superspace formalism. Superspace allows us to efficiently impose the symmetries of the problem and to obtain a simple expression for the effective action. We show that the theory we obtain is compatible with the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger condition, which in turn implies that Green's functions obey the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Our approach complements and extends existing formulations found in the literature.

Anomalies for Galilean fields

We initiate a systematic study of `t Hooft anomalies in Galilean field theories, focusing on two questions therein. In the first, we consider the non-relativistic theories obtained from a discrete light-cone quantization (DLCQ) of a relativistic theory with flavor or gravitational anomalies. We find that these anomalies survive the DLCQ, becoming mixed flavor/boost or gravitational/boost anomalies. We also classify the pure Weyl anomalies of Schrödinger theories, which are Galilean conformal field theories (CFTs) with $z=2$. There are no pure Weyl anomalies in even spacetime dimension, and the lowest-derivative anomalies in odd dimension are in one-to-one correspondence with those of a relativistic CFT in one dimension higher. These results classify many of the anomalies that arise in the field theories dual to string theory on Schrödinger spacetimes.

On the coupling of Galilean-invariant field theories to curved spacetime

We consider the problem of coupling Galilean-invariant quantum field theories to a fixed spacetime. We propose that to do so, one couples to Newton-Cartan geometry and in addition imposes a one-form shift symmetry. This additional symmetry imposes invariance under Galilean boosts, and its Ward identity equates particle number and momentum currents. We show that Newton-Cartan geometry subject to the shift symmetry arises in null reductions of Lorentzian manifolds, and so our proposal is realized for theories which are holographically dual to quantum gravity on Schrödinger spacetimes. We use this null reduction to efficiently form tensorial invariants under the boost and particle number symmetries. We also explore the coupling of Schrödinger-invariant field theories to spacetime, which we argue necessitates the Newton-Cartan analogue of Weyl invariance.

An entropy current in superspace

We construct an entropy current using a supersymmetric formulation of the low-energy effective action for the Schwinger-Keldysh generating functional. We define an entropy current quantum mechanically by coupling it to an external source. It is given by the bottom component of an entropy current superfield which is conserved in superspace, but when restricted to real space satisfies a non-conservation law. Our analysis is valid in the probe limit which allows us to fully treat quantum fluctuations.
