Tuning of extended state observer with neural network-based control performance assessment

The extended state observer (ESO) is an inherent element of robust observer-based control systems that allows estimating the impact of disturbance on system dynamics. Proper tuning of ESO parameters is necessary to ensure a good quality of estimated quantities and impacts the overall performance of the robust control structure. In this paper, we propose a neural network (NN) based tuning procedure that allows the user to prioritize between selected quality criteria such as the control and observation errors and the specified features of the control signal. The designed NN provides an accurate assessment of the control system performance and returns a set of ESO parameters that delivers a near-optimal solution to the user-defined cost function. The proposed tuning procedure, using an estimated state from the single closed-loop experiment produces near-optimal ESO gains within seconds.

Active Disturbance Rejection Control Design with Suppression of Sensor Noise Effects in Application to DC-DC Buck Power Converter

The performance of active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) algorithms can be limited in practice by high-frequency measurement noise. In this work, this problem is addressed by transforming the high-gain extended state observer (ESO), which is the inherent element of ADRC, into a new cascade observer structure. Set of experiments, performed on a DC-DC buck power converter system, show that the new cascade ESO design, compared to the conventional approach, effectively suppresses the detrimental effect of sensor noise over-amplification while increasing the estimation/control performance. The proposed design is also analyzed with a low-pass filter at the converter output, which is a common technique for reducing measurement noise in industrial applications.

Robust converter-fed motor control based on active rejection of multiple disturbances

In this work, an advanced motion controller is proposed for buck converter-fed DC motor systems. The design is based on an idea of active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) with its key component being a custom observer capable of reconstructing various types of disturbances (including complex, harmonic signals). A special formulation of the proposed design allows the control action to be expressed in a concise and practically appealing form reducing its implementation requirements. The obtained experimental results show increased performance of the introduced approach over conventionally used methods in tracking precision and disturbance rejection, while keeping similar level of energy consumption. A stability analysis using theory of singular perturbation further supports the validity of proposed control approach.

Cascade Extended State Observer for Active Disturbance Rejection Control Applications under Measurement Noise

The extended state observer (ESO) plays an important role in the design of feedback control for nonlinear systems. However, its high-gain nature creates a challenge in engineering practice in cases where the output measurement is corrupted by non-negligible, high-frequency noise. The presence of such noise puts a constraint on how high the observer gains can be, which forces a trade-off between fast convergence of state estimates and quality of control task realization. In this work, a new observer design is proposed to improve the estimation performance in the presence of noise. In particular, a unique cascade combination of ESOs is developed, which is capable of fast and accurate signals reconstruction, while avoiding over-amplification of the measurement noise. The effectiveness of the introduced observer structure is verified here while working as a part of an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) scheme. The conducted numerical validation and theoretical analysis of the new observer structure show improvement over standard solution in terms of noise attenuation.

Robust output-feedback VFO-ADR control of underactuated spatial vehicles in the task of following non-parametrized paths

This article concerns the development of the Vector Field Orientation - Active Disturbance Rejection (VFO-ADR) cascaded path-following controller for underactuated vehicles moving in a 3-dimensional space. The proposed concept of a cascaded control structure decouples system kinematics from system dynamics, resembling the approach utilized for nonholonomic systems. Thanks to the use of an ADR control approach in the dynamic-level controller, the proposed control structure is robust to even significant model uncertainties and external disturbances. Application of an error-based form of the Extended State Observer (ESO), implemented within the ADR inner-loop controller, implies the output-feedback characteristic of the control structure, i.e., only position and attitude of the vehicle body are expected to be measured. The kinematic-level controller is designed according to the VFO method utilizing the non-parametrized path representation to calculate the commanded velocities. The description of the proposed control structure is followed by the theoretical analysis utilizing the Input-to-State Stability (ISS) theorem and the simulation verification of the proposed solution.

ESO architectures in the trajectory tracking ADR controller for a mechanical system: a comparison

Proper operation of the Active Disturbance Rejection (ADR) controller requires a precise determination of the so-called total disturbance affecting the considered dynamical system, usually estimated by the Extended State Observer (ESO). The observation quality of total disturbance has a significant impact on the control error values, making room for a potential improvement of control system performance using different structures of ESO. In this article, we provide a quantitative comparison between the Luenberger and Astolfi/Marconi (AM) observers designed for three different extended state representations and utilized in the trajectory tracking ADR controller designed for a mechanical system. Included results were obtained in the simple simulation case, followed by the experimental validation on the main axis of a telescope mount.
