Note on the Margolus-Levitin quantum speed limit for arbitrary fidelity

For vanishing fidelity between initial and final states two important quantum speed limits, the Mandelstam-Tamm limit (involving energy dispersion) and Margolus-Levitin one (involving excitation energy expectation value) have been derived. While the generalization of the former limit to the case of arbitrary fidelity is straightforward, the relevant generalization of the latter, given in the seminal paper by Giovanetti et al (Phys. Rev. A67 (2003), 052109) was based on the conjectured equality of lower and upper bounds on the right hand side of generalized Margolus-Levitin inequality, verified numerically up to seven digits. Only recently there appear two proofs of the conjecture. We provide below a very elementary new proof, based on the simplest tools from differential calculus. Thus the generalized Margolus-Levitin speed limit can be derived much in the spirit of the original one valid for vanishing fidelity.

Various disguises of the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator

Beginning with a simple set of planar equations, we discuss novel realizations of the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator in various contexts. First, due to the bi-Hamiltonian character of this model, we develop a Hamiltonian approach for the Eisenhart-Duval lift of the related dynamics. We apply this approach to the previously worked example of a circularly polarized periodic gravitational wave. Then, we present our further results. Firstly, we show that the transverse dynamics of the Lukash plane wave and a complete gravitational wave pulse can also lead to the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator. We express the related Carroll Killing vectors in terms of the Pais-Uhlenbeck frequencies and derive extra integrals of motion from the conformal Newton-Hooke symmetry. In addition, we find that the 3+1 dimensional Penning trap can be canonically mapped to the 6th order Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator. We also carry the problem to the non-commutative plane. Lastly, we discuss other examples like the motion of a charged particle under electromagnetic field created with double copy.

Spinning particles, coadjoint orbits and Hamiltonian formalism

The extensive analysis of the dynamics of relativistic spinning particles is presented. Using the coadjoint orbits method the Hamiltonian dynamics is explicitly described. The main technical tool is the factorization of general Lorentz transformation into pure boost and rotation. The equivalent constrained dynamics on Poincare group (viewed as configuration space) is derived and complete classification of constraints is performed. It is shown that the first class constraints generate local symmetry corresponding to the stability subgroup of some point on coadjoint orbit. The Dirac brackets for second class constraints are computed. Finally, canonical quantization is performed leading to infinitesimal form of irreducible representations of Poincare group.

Chiral fermions, massless particles and Poincare covariance

The coadjoint orbit method is applied to the construction of Hamiltonian dynamics of massless particles of arbitrary helicity. The unusual transformation properties of canonical variables are interpreted in terms of nonlinear realizations of Poincare group. The action principle is formulated in terms of new space-time variables with standard transformation properties.

Conformal Newton-Hooke symmetry of Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator

It is demonstrated that the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator in arbitrary dimension enjoys the l-conformal Newton-Hooke symmetry provided frequencies of oscillation form the arithmetic sequence omega_k=(2k-1) omega_1, where k=1,...,n, and l is the half-integer (2n-1)/2. The model is shown to be maximally superintegrable. A link to n decoupled isotropic oscillators is discussed and an interplay between the l-conformal Newton-Hooke symmetry and symmetries characterizing each individual isotropic oscillator is analyzed.

Modified Hamiltonian formalism for higher-derivative theories

The alternative version of Hamiltonian formalism for higher-derivative theories is proposed. As compared with the standard Ostrogradski approach it has the following advantages: (i) the Lagrangian, when expressed in terms of new variables yields proper equations of motion; no additional Lagrange multipliers are necessary (ii) the Legendre transformation can be performed in a straightforward way provided the Lagrangian is nonsingular in Ostrogradski sense. The generalization to singular Lagrangians as well as field theory are presented.

Euclidean Path Integral and Higher-Derivative Theories

We consider the Euclidean path integral approach to higher-derivative theories proposed by Hawking and Hertog (Phys. Rev. D65 (2002), 103515). The Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator is studied in some detail. The operator algebra is reconstructed and the structure of the space of states revealed. It is shown that the quantum theory results from quantizing the classical complex dynamics in which the original dynamics is consistently immersed. The field-theoretical counterpart of Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator is also considered.

Extrinsic curvatures of distributions of arbitrary codimension

In this article, using the generalized Newton transformation, we define higher order mean curvatures of distributions of arbitrary codimension and we show that they agree with the ones from Brito and Naveira (Ann. Global Anal. Geom. 18, 371-383 (2000)). We also introduce higher order mean curvature vector fields and we compute their divergence for certain distributions and using this we obtain total extrinsic mean curvatures.

Conformal fields and the stability of leaves with constant higher order mean curvature

In this paper, we study submanifolds with constant $r$th mean curvature $S_r$. We investigate, the stability of such submanifolds in the case when they are leaves of a codimension one foliation. We also generalize recent results by Barros - Sousa and Alías - Colares, concerning conformal fields, to an arbitrary manifold. Using this we show that normal component of a Killing field is a $r$th Jacobi field of a submanifold with $S_{r+1}$ constant. Finally, we study relations between $r$th Jacobi fields and vector fields preserving a foliation.
