Expected Infimum and persistence probabilities of Log-Normal Stationary Brown-Resnick Processes

We investigate the asymptotics of the expected infimum of log-normal Brown-Resnick stationary processes, a class of processes that arise naturally in the study of extremes of Gaussian processes and max-stable processes. Specifically, we analyse the functional $$\mathcal{G}_V(T) = \mathbb{E}\left\{\inf_{t \in [0,T]}e^{ \sqrt{2}V(t)-σ^2_V(t)} \right\}, \quad T>0, $$ where $V$ is a centered Gaussian process with stationary increments, continuous sample paths and variance $σ_V^2$, and a closely related problem of the decay rate of the persistence probability $$p_V(T,C)=\mathbb{P}\left\{\inf_{t\in [0,T]} (\sqrt{2} V(t)- σ^2_V(t)) > C\right\}$$ for some constant $C<0$. For both $\mathcal{G}_V(T)$ and $p_V(T,C)$ we derive exact asymptotics as $T \to \infty$ for a broad class of processes $V$, including fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H \in (1/2,1]$. For the latter, the behavior in the short-range dependence regime $H \in (0, 1/2]$ is markedly different and, in general, more delicate; we find logarithmic asymptotics for a family of processes that includes this case. Our results provide sharp bounds and comparison principles, and highlight the contrast between the behavior of infimum and supremum functionals for such processes. The discrete-time analogues and connections to Pickands constants are also discussed.

Lévy-driven queuing networks in multi-scale light and heavy traffic

We study a queueing network with a strictly upper-triangular routing matrix, where each column contains at most one non-negative entry, and the root node receives input from a spectrally positive Lévy process. Our aim is to characterize the distribution of the multivariate stationary workload under a specific scaling of the service rates. Under mild conditions on the Laplace exponent of the driving Lévy process, we identify the limiting law of an appropriately scaled joint stationary workload in both light-traffic and heavy-traffic regimes. In particular, we establish conditions under which certain queueing workloads within the network asymptotically decouple, becoming independent in the limiting regime.

Extremes of Brownian Decision Trees

We consider a Brownian motion with linear drift that splits at fixed time points into a fixed number of branches, which may depend on the branching point. For this process, which we shall refer to as the Brownian decision tree, we investigate the exact asymptotics of high exceedance probabilities in finite time horizon, including: the probability that at least one branch exceeds some high threshold, the probability that the largest distance between branches gets large and the probability that all branches simultaneously exceed some high barrier. Additionally, we find the asymptotics for the probability that all branches of at least one of $M$ independent Brownian decision trees exceed a high threshold.

Functional limit theorems for Gaussian-fed queueing network in light and heavy traffic

We consider a queueing network operating under a strictly upper-triangular routing matrix with per column at most one non-negative entry. The root node is fed by a Gaussian process with stationary increments. Our aim is to characterize the distribution of the multivariate stationary workload process under a specific scaling of the queue's service rates. In the main results of this paper we identify, under mild conditions on the standard deviation function of the driving Gaussian process, in both light and heavy traffic parameterization, the limiting law of an appropriately scaled version (in both time and space) of the joint stationary workload process. In particular, we develop conditions under which specific queueing processes of the network effectively decouple, i.e., become independent in the limiting regime.

Sojourns of fractional Brownian motion queues: transient asymptotics

We study the asymptotics of sojourn time of the stationary queueing process $Q(t),t\ge0$ fed by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in(0,1)$ above a high threshold $u$. For the Brownian motion case $H=1/2$, we derive the exact asymptotics of \[ P\left(\int_{T_1}^{T_2} 1(Q(t)>u+h(u))d t>x \Big{|}Q(0) >u \right) \] as $u\to\infty$, {where $T_1,T_2, x\geq 0$ and $T_2-T_1>x$}, whereas for all $H\in(0,1)$, we obtain sharp asymptotic approximations of \[ P\left( \frac 1 {v(u)} \int_{[T_2(u),T_3(u)]}1(Q(t)>u+h(u))dt>y \Bigl \lvert \frac 1 {v(u)} \int_{[0,T_1(u)]}1(Q(t)>u)dt>x\right), \quad x,y >0 \] as $u\to\infty$, for appropriately chosen $T_i$'s and $v$. Two regimes of the ratio between $u$ and $h(u)$, that lead to qualitatively different approximations, are considered.

Extremes of Reflecting Gaussian Processes on Discrete Grid

For $\{X(t), t \in G_δ\}$ a centered Gaussian process with stationary increments and a.s. sample paths on a discrete grid $G_δ=\{0,δ,2δ, ...\}$, where $δ>0$, we investigate the stationary reflected process $$Q_{δ,X}(t) = \sup\limits_{s\in [t,\infty)\cap G_δ}\big( X(s)-X(t)-c(s-t)\big), \ t \in G_δ$$ with $c>0$. We derive the exact asymptotics of $$\mathbb P\{\sup\limits_{t\in [0,T]\cap G_δ} Q_{δ,X}(t)>u\} \quad \text{and} \quad \mathbb P\{\inf\limits_{t\in [0,T]\cap G_δ} Q_{δ,X}(t)>u\},$$ as $u\to\infty$, with $T>0$. It appears that $φ=\lim_{u\to\infty} \frac{σ^2(u)}{u}$ determines the asymptotics, leading to three qualitatively different scenarios: $φ=0$, $φ\in(0,\infty)$ and $φ=\infty$.

Pandemic-type Failures in Multivariate Brownian Risk Models

Modelling of multiple simultaneous failures in insurance, finance and other areas of applied probability is important especially from the point of view of pandemic-type events. A benchmark limiting model for the analysis of multiple failures is the classical $d$-dimensional Brownian risk model (Brm), see [1]. From both theoretical and practical point of view, of interest is the calculation of the probability of multiple simultaneous failures in a given time horizon. The main findings of this contribution concern the approximation of the probability that at least $k$ out of $d$ components of Brm fail simultaneously. We derive both sharp bounds and asymptotic approximations of the probability of interest for the finite and the infinite time horizon. Our results extend previous findings of [2,3].

On the continuity of Pickands constants

For a non-negative separable random field $Z(t), t\in \mathbb{R}^d$ satisfying some mild assumptions we show that \begin{eqnarray*} H_Z^δ= \lim_{T\to\infty} \frac{1}{T^d} E \{\sup_{ t\in [0,T]^d \cap δ\mathbb{Z}^d } Z(t) \} <\infty \end{eqnarray*} for $δ\ge 0$ where $0 \mathbb{Z}^d := \mathbb{R}^d$ and prove that $H_Z^0$ can be approximated by $H_Z^δ$ if $δ$ tends to 0. These results extend the classical findings for the Pickands constants $H_{Z}^δ$, defined for $Z(t)= \exp\left( \sqrt{ 2} B_α(t)- |t|^{2α}\right), t\in \mathbb{R}$ with $B_α$ a standard fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $α\in (0,1]$. The continuity of $H_{Z}^δ$ at $δ=0$ is additionally shown for two particular extensions of Pickands constants.

Sojourn times of Gaussian related random fields

This paper is concerned with the asymptotic analysis of sojourn times of random fields with continuous sample paths. Under a very general framework we show that there is an interesting relationship between tail asymptotics of sojourn times and that of supremum. Moreover, we establish the uniform double-sum method to derive the tail asymptotics of sojourn times. In the literature, based on the pioneering research of S. Berman the sojourn times have been utilised to derive the tail asymptotics of supremum of Gaussian processes. In this paper we show that the opposite direction is even more fruitful, namely knowing the asymptotics of supremum o f random processes and fields (in particular Gaussian) it is possible to establish the asymptotics of their sojourn times. We illustrate our findings considering i) two dimensional Gaussian random fields, ii) chi-process generated by stationary Gaussian processes and iii) stationary Gaussian queueing processes.

Finite-time ruin probability for correlated Brownian motions

Let $(W_1(s), W_2(t)), s,t\ge 0$ be a bivariate Brownian motion with standard Brownian motion marginals and constant correlation $ρ\in (-1,1)$ and define the joint survival probability of both supremum functionals $π_ρ(c_1,c_2; u, v)$ by $$π_ρ(c_1,c_2; u, v)=\mathbb{P}\left(\sup_{s \in [0,1]} \left(W_1(s)-c_1s\right)>u,\sup_{t \in [0,1]} \left(W_2(t)-c_2t\right)>v\right) ,$$ where $c_1,c_2 \in \mathbb{R}$ and $u,v$ are given positive constants. Approximation of $π_ρ(c_1,c_2; u, v) $ is of interest for the analysis of ruin probability in bivariate Brownian risk model as well as in the study of bivariate test statistics. In this contribution we derive tight bounds for $π_ρ(c_1,c_2; u, v)$ in the case $ρ\in (0,1)$ and obtain precise approximations by letting $u\to \infty$ and taking $v= au$ for some fixed positive constant $a$ and $ρ\in (-1,1).$

Sojourns of Stationary Gaussian Processes over a Random Interval

We investigate asymptotics of the tail distribution of sojourn time $$ \int_0^T \mathbb{I}(X(t)> u)dt, $$ as $u\to\infty$, where $X$ is a centered stationary Gaussian process and $T$ is an independent of $X$ nonnegative random variable. The heaviness of the tail distribution of $T$ impacts the form of the asymptotics, leading to four scenarios: the case of integrable $T$, the case of regularly varying $T$ with index $λ=1$ and index $λ\in(0,1)$ and the case of slowly varying tail distribution of $T$. The derived findings are illustrated by the analysis of the class of fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes.

Extremes of Vector-Valued Gaussian Processes

The seminal papers of Pickands [1,2] paved the way for a systematic study of high exceedance probabilities of both stationary and non-stationary Gaussian processes. Yet, in the vector-valued setting, due to the lack of key tools including Slepian's Lemma, Borell-TIS and Piterbarg inequalities there has not been any methodological development in the literature for the study of extremes of vector-valued Gaussian processes. In this contribution we develop the uniform double-sum method for the vector-valued setting obtaining the exact asymptotics of the exceedance probabilities for both stationary and non-stationary Gaussian processes. We apply our findings to the operator fractional Brownian motion and the operator fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.

Pickands-Piterbarg constants for self-similar Gaussian processes

For a centered self-similar Gaussian process $\{Y(t):t\in[0,\infty)\}$ and $R\ge0$ we analyze asymptotic behaviour of \[ \mathcal{H}_Y^R(T) \; = \; \mathbf{E} \exp \left( \sup_{t \in [0,T]} \sqrt{2} Y(t) - (1+R) σ_Y^2(t) \right), \] as $T\to\infty$. We prove that $\mathcal{H}_Y^R=\lim_{T\to\infty} \mathcal{H}_Y^R(T)\in(0,\infty)$ for $R>0$ and \[\mathcal{H}_Y=\lim_{T\to\infty} \frac{\mathcal{H}_Y^0(T)}{T^γ}\in(0,\infty)\] for suitably chosen $γ>0$. Additionally, we find bounds for $\mathcal{H}_Y^R$, $R>0$ and a surprising relation between $\mathcal{H}_Y$ and classical Pickands constants.

Simultaneous Ruin Probability for Two-Dimensional Brownian and Lévy Risk Models

The ruin probability in the classical Brownian risk model can be explicitly calculated for both finite and infinite-time horizon. This is not the case for the simultaneous ruin probability in two-dimensional Brownian risk model. Resorting on asymptotic theory, we derive in this contribution approximations of both simultaneous ruin probability and simultaneous ruin time for the two-dimensional Brownian risk model when the initial capital increases to infinity. Given the interest in proportional reinsurance, we consider in some details the case where the correlation is 1. This model is tractable allowing for explicit formulas for the simultaneous ruin probability for linearly dependent spectrally positive Lévy processes. Examples include perturbed Brownian and gamma Lévy processes.

Approximation of Sojourn Times of Gaussian Processes

We investigate the tail asymptotic behavior of the sojourn time for a large class of centered Gaussian processes $X$, in both continuous- and discrete-time framework. All results obtained here are new for the discrete-time case. In the continuous-time case, we complement the investigations of [1,2] for non-stationary $X$. A by-product of our investigation is a new representation of Pickands constant which is important for Monte-Carlo simulations and yields a sharp lower bound for Pickands constant.

Extremal behaviour of hitting a cone by correlated Brownian motion with drift

This paper derives an exact asymptotic expression for \[ \mathbb{P}_{\mathbf{x}_u}\{\exists_{t\ge0} \mathbf{X}(t)- \boldsymbolμt\in \mathcal{U} \}, \ \ {\rm as}\ \ u\to\infty, \] where $\mathbf{X}(t)=(X_1(t),\ldots,X_d(t))^\top,t\ge0$ is a correlated $d$-dimensional Brownian motion starting at the point $\mathbf{x}_u=-\boldsymbolαu$ with $\boldsymbolα\in \mathbb{R}^d$, $\boldsymbolμ \in \mathbb{R}^d$ and $\mathcal{U}=\prod_{i=1}^d [0,\infty)$. The derived asymptotics depends on the solution of an underlying multidimensional quadratic optimization problem with constraints, which leads in some cases to dimension-reduction of the considered problem. Complementary, we study asymptotic distribution of the conditional first passage time to $\mathcal{U}$, which depends on the dimension-reduction phenomena.

Uniform tail approximation of homogenous functionals of Gaussian fields

Let $X(t),t\in R^d$ be a centered Gaussian random field with continuous trajectories and set $ξ_u(t)= X(f(u)t),t\in R^d$ with $f$ some positive function. Classical results establish the tail asymptotics of $P\{ Γ(ξ_u) > u\}$ as $u\to \infty$ with $Γ(ξ_u)= \sup_{t \in [0,T ]^d} ξ_u(t),T>0$ by requiring that $f(u) \to 0$ with speed controlled by the local behaviour of the correlation function of $X$. Recent research shows that for applications more general continuous functionals than supremum should be considered and the Gaussian field can depend also on some additional parameter $τ_u \in K$, say $ξ_{u,τ_u}(t),t\in R^d$. In this contribution we derive uniform approximations of $P\{ Γ(ξ_{u,τ_u})> u\}$ with respect to $τ_u$ in some index set $K_u$, as $u\to\infty$. Our main result have important theoretical implications; two applications are already included in [10,11]. In this paper we present three additional ones, namely i) we derive uniform upper bounds for the probability of double-maxima, ii) we extend Piterbarg-Prisyazhnyuk theorem to some large classes of homogeneous functionals of centered Gaussian fields $ξ_{u}$, and iii) we show the finiteness of generalized Piterbarg constants.

Lévy-driven GPS queues with heavy-tailed input

In this paper we derive exact large-buffer asymptotics for a two-class Generalized Processor Sharing (GPS) model, under the assumption that the input traffic streams generated by both classes correspond to heavy-tailed Lévy processes. Four scenarios need to be distinguished, which differ in terms of (i)~the level of heavy-tailedness of the driving Lévy processes as well as (ii)~the values of the corresponding mean rates relative to the GPS weights. The derived results are illustrated by two important special cases, in which the queues' inputs are modeled by heavy-tailed compound Poisson processes and by $α$-stable Lévy motions.
