Existence and order of the self--binding transition in non--local non--linear Schrödinger equations

We consider a class of non--linear and non--local functionals giving rise to the Choquard equation with a suitably regular interaction potential, modelling, i.e., gases with impurities and axion stars. We study how existence of minimizers depends on the coupling constant, and find that there is a critical interaction strength needed for the minimizers to exist, both in dimensions two and three. In $d=3$, a minimizer exists also at the critical coupling but none do in $d=2$ under suitable assumptions on the potential. We also establish that in $d=3$ there exist other critical points beyond the global minimizer.

No equivalence between hydrodynamic and dispersive mass of the charged polaron

We consider the problem of a charged impurity exerting a weak, slowly decaying force on its surroundings, treating the latter as an ideal compressible fluid. In the semiclassical approximation, the ion is described by the Newton equation coupled to the Euler equation for the medium. After linearization, we obtain a simple closed formula for the effective mass of the impurity, depending on the interaction potential, the mean medium density, and sound velocity. Thus, once the interaction and the equation of state of the fluid is known, an estimate of the hydrodynamic effective mass can be quickly provided. Going beyond the classical case, we show that replacing the Newton with Schrödinger equation can drastically change the behavior of the impurity. In particular, the scaling of the Fermi polaron effective mass with the medium density is opposite in quantum and classical scenario. Our results are relevant for experimental systems featuring low energy impurities in Fermi or Bose systems, such as ions immersed in neutral atomic gases.

Fully polarized Fermi systems at finite temperature

We propose a simple model of an interacting, fully spin--polarized Fermi gas in dimensions $d=2$ and $d=3$, and derive the approximate expression for the energy spectrum and the corresponding formula for the Helmholtz free energy. We analyze the thermodynamics of the system and find the lines of first--order phase transitions between the low and high density phases terminating at critical points. The properties of the corresponding phase diagrams are qualitatively different for $d=2$ and $3$, and sensitively depend on the interparticle attraction, which marks a departure from the standard van der Waals theory. The differences originate from the Pauli exclusion principle and are embeded in the fermionic nature of the system under study.

Simulating critical anion chemistry with indirect excitons

We study the effect of geometric constraints on the formation of indirect excitonic complexes with excess charge by considering the problem of two identical electrons moving in half-space subject to mutual Coulomb repulsion and the Coulomb attraction to a heavy hole of charge $Z$ residing on a flat impenetrable surface. We find that $Z=1$ is the critical charge necessary for binding, as compared to $Z_c\approx0.911$ in the unconstrained system. This suggests that interlayer electron--hole systems may serve as a flexible and experimentally accessible platform to study electronic behavior close to the critical nuclear charge necessary for binding.

First-order, continuous, and multicritical Bose-Einstein condensation in Bose mixtures

We address the possibility of realizing Bose-Einstein condensation as a first-order phase transition by admixture of particles of different species. To this aim we perform a comprehensive analysis of phase diagrams of two-component mixtures of bosons at finite temperatures. As a prototype model, we analyze a binary mixture of Bose particles interacting via an infinite-range (Kac-scaled) two-body potential. We obtain a rich phase diagram, where the transition between the normal and Bose-Einstein condensed phases may be either continuous or first-order. The phase diagram hosts lines of triple points, tricritical points, as well as quadruple points. We address the structure of the phase diagram depending on the relative magnitudes of the inter- and intra-species interaction couplings. In addition, even for purely repulsive interactions, we identify a first-order liquid-gas type transition between non-condensed phases characterized by different particle concentrations. In the obtained phase diagram, a surface of such first-order transitions terminates with a line of critical points.

The long-range interacting Fermi polaron

We construct the simplest density functional for the problem of a single impurity interacting with a Fermi gas via a long--ranged potential using the Thomas--Fermi approach. We find that the Fermi polaron is fully bosonized in two dimensions, as the model results in a suitable Landau--Pekar functional known from the Bose polaron problem which describes a self--interacting impurity. In other dimensions, the impurity self--interacts with an infinite number of its own images, and no bosonization occurs. We discuss applications of our theory for the $2d$ exciton--polaron and the ionic polaron problem and compute the effective mass for these cases, finding a self--trapping transition with order depending on the dimensionality.

On the global minimum of the energy-momentum relation for the polaron

For the Fröhlich model of the large polaron, we prove that the ground state energy as a function of the total momentum has a unique global minimum at momentum zero. This implies the non-existence of a ground state of the Fröhlich Hamiltonian and thus excludes the possibility of a localization transition at finite coupling.

Optimal parabolic upper bound for the energy-momentum relation of a strongly coupled polaron

We consider the large polaron described by the Fröhlich Hamiltonian and study its energy-momentum relation defined as the lowest possible energy as a function of the total momentum. Using a suitable family of trial states, we derive an optimal parabolic upper bound for the energy-momentum relation in the limit of strong coupling. The upper bound consists of a momentum independent term that agrees with the predicted two-term expansion for the ground state energy of the strongly coupled polaron at rest, and a term that is quadratic in the momentum with coefficient given by the inverse of twice the classical effective mass introduced by Landau and Pekar.

Polaron models with regular interactions at strong coupling

We study a class of polaron-type Hamiltonians with sufficiently regular form factor in the interaction term. We investigate the strong-coupling limit of the model, and prove suitable bounds on the ground state energy as a function of the total momentum of the system. These bounds agree with the semiclassical approximation to leading order. The latter corresponds here to the situation when the particle undergoes harmonic motion in a potential well whose frequency is determined by the corresponding Pekar functional. We show that for all such models the effective mass diverges in the strong coupling limit, in all spatial dimensions. Moreover, for the case when the phonon dispersion relation grows at least linearly with momentum, the bounds result in an asymptotic formula for the effective mass quotient, a quantity generalizing the usual notion of the effective mass. This asymptotic form agrees with the semiclassical Landau--Pekar formula and can be regarded as the first rigorous confirmation, in a slightly weaker sense than usually considered, of the validity of the semiclassical formula for the effective mass.
