Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry

Long-baseline atom interferometry is a promising technique for probing various aspects of fundamental physics, astrophysics and cosmology, including searches for ultralight dark matter (ULDM) and for gravitational waves (GWs) in the frequency range around 1~Hz that is not covered by present and planned detectors using laser interferometry. The MAGIS detector is under construction at Fermilab, as is the MIGA detector in France. The PX46 access shaft to the LHC has been identified as a very suitable site for an atom interferometer of height $\sim 100$m, sites at the Boulby mine in the UK and the Canfranc Laboratory are also under investigation, and possible sites for km-class detectors have been suggested. The Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry (TVLBAI) Proto-Collaboration proposes a coordinated programme of interferometers of increasing baselines.

EPR-entangled Bose-Einstein condensates in state-dependent potentials: a dynamical study

We study generation of non-local correlations by atomic interactions in a pair of bi-modal Bose-Einstein Condensates in state-dependent potentials including spatial dynamics. The wave-functions of the four components are described by combining a Fock state expansion with a time-dependent Hartree-Fock Ansatz, so that both the spatial dynamics and the local and non-local quantum correlations are accounted for. We find that despite the spatial dynamics, our protocole generates enough non-local entanglement to perform an EPR steering experiment with two spatially separated con-densates of a few thousands of atoms.

Mesoscopic quantum superpositions in bimodal Bose-Einstein condensates: decoherence and strategies to counteract it

We study theoretically the interaction-induced generation of mesoscopic coherent spin state superpositions (small cat states) from an initial coherent spin state in bimodal Bose-Einstein condensates and the subsequent phase revival, including decoherence due to particle losses and fluctuations of the total particle number. In a full multimode description, we propose a preparation procedure of the initial coherent spin state and we study the effect of preexisting thermal fluctuations on the phase revival, and on the spin and orbito-spinorial cat fidelities.

Dipolar dark solitons

We numerically generate, and then study the basic properties of dark soliton-like excitations in a dipolar gas confined in a quasi one dimensional trap. These excitations, although very similar to dark solitons in a gas with contact interaction, interact with each other and can form bound states. During collisions these dipolar solitons emit phonons, loosing energy, but accelerating. Even after thousands of subsequent collisions they survive as gray solitons and finally reach dynamical equilibrium with background quasiparticles. Finally, in the frame of classical field approximation, we verified, that these solitons appear spontaneously in thermal samples, analogously to the type II excitations in a gas of atoms with contact interaction.

Limits of atomic entanglement by cavity-feedback : from weak to strong coupling

We theoretically investigate the entangled states of an atomic ensemble that can be obtained via cavity-feedback, varying the atom-light coupling from weak to strong, and including a systematic treatment of decoherence. In the strong coupling regime for small atomic ensembles, the system is driven by cavity losses into a long-lived, highly-entangled many-body state that we characterize analytically. In the weak coupling regime for large ensembles, we find analytically the maximum spin squeezing that can be achieved by optimizing both the coupling and the atom number. This squeezing is fundamentally limited by spontaneous emission to a constant value, independent of the atom number. Harnessing entanglement in many-body systems is of fundamental interest [1] and is the key requirement for quantum enhanced technologies, in particular quantum metrology [2]. In this respect, many efforts have been devoted to prepare entangled states in atomic ensembles because of their high degree of coherence and their potential for precision measurement. Spin squeezed states as well as number states have been produced following methods based either on coherent evolution in the presence of a non-linearity in the atomic field [3--5], or on quantum non-demolition measurement [6--8]. Among methods of the first kind, cavity feedback [5, 9] is one of the most promising: it has already allowed for the creation of highly squeezed states [5] and the effective non-linearity introduced by the atom-cavity coupling can be easily switched off, making it very attractive for metrol-ogy applications. In this Letter, we analyze the entangled states that can be produced by cavity feedback in different coupling regimes from weak to strong, and derive the ultimate limits of the metrology gain, extending the optimization of squeezing to unexplored domains of parameters values. After optimization of both the coupling strength and the atom number, we find a maximum squeezing limit that depends only on the atomic structure.

Effect of one-, two-, and three-body atom loss processes on superpositions of phase states in Bose-Josephson junctions

In a two-mode Bose-Josephson junction formed by a binary mixture of ultracold atoms, macroscopic superpositions of phase states are produced during the time evolution after a sudden quench to zero of the coupling amplitude. Using quantum trajectories and an exact diagonalization of the master equation, we study the effect of one-, two-, and three-body atom losses on the superpositions by analyzing separately the amount of quantum correlations in each subspace with fixed atom number. The quantum correlations useful for atom interferometry are estimated using the quantum Fisher information. We identify the choice of parameters leading to the largest Fisher information, thereby showing that, for all kinds of loss processes, quantum correlations can be partially protected from decoherence when the losses are strongly asymmetric in the two modes.

Spin squeezing and EPR entanglement of two bimodal condensates in state-dependent potentials

We propose and analyze a scheme to entangle the collective spin states of two spatially separated bimodal Bose-Einstein condensates. Using a four-mode approximation for the atomic field, we show that elastic collisions in a state-dependent potential simultaneously create spin-squeezing in each condensate and entangle the collective spins of the two condensates. We investigate mostly analytically the non-local quantum correlations that arise in this system at short times and show that Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement is generated between the condensates. At long times we point out macroscopic entangled states and explain their structure. The scheme can be implemented with condensates in state-dependent microwave potentials on an atom chip.

Ground state of a two component dipolar Fermi gas in a harmonic potential

Interacting two component Fermi gases are at the heart of our understanding of macroscopic quantum phenomena like superconductivity. Changing nature of the interaction is expected to head to novel quantum phases. Here we study the ground state of a two component fermionic gas in a harmonic potential with dipolar and contact interactions. Using a variational Wigner function we present the phase diagram of the system with equal but opposite values of the magnetic moment. We identify the second order phase transition from paramagnetic to ferronematic phase. Moreover, we show the impact of the experimentally relevant magnetic field on the stability and the magnetization of the system. We also investigate a two component Fermi gas with large but almost equal values of the magnetic moment to study how the interplay between contact and dipolar interactions affects the stability properties of the mixture. To be specific we discuss experimentally relevant parameters for ultracold $^{161}$Dy.

Macroscopic superpositions in Bose-Josephson junctions: Controlling decoherence due to atom losses

We study how macroscopic superpositions of coherent states produced by the nondissipative dynamics of binary mixtures of ultracold atoms are affected by atom losses. We identify different decoherence scenarios for symmetric or asymmetric loss rates and interaction energies in the two modes. In the symmetric case the quantum coherence in the superposition is lost after a single loss event. By tuning appropriately the energies we show that the superposition can be protected, leading to quantum correlations useful for atom interferometry even after many loss events.

Correlations of quasi-2D dipolar ultracold gas at finite temperatures

We study a quasi two dimensional dipolar gas at finite, but ultralow temperatures using the classical field approximation. The method, already used for a contact interacting gas, is extended here to samples with a weakly interacting long-range inter-atomic potential. We present statistical properties of the system for the current experiment with Chromium [Phys. Rev. A 84 053601 (2011)] and compare them with statistics for atoms with larger magnetic dipole moments. Significant enhancement of the third order correlation function, relevant for the particle losses, is found.

Mean-field description of dipolar bosons in triple-well potentials

We investigate the ground state properties of a polarized dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a triple-well potential. By solving the dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically for different geometries we identify states which reveal the non-local character of the interaction. Depending on the strength of the contact and dipolar interaction we depict the stable and unstable regions in parameter space.

Quasicondensation reexamined

We study in detail the effect of quasicondensation. We show that this effect is strictly related to dimensionality of the system. It is present in one dimensional systems independently of interactions - exists in repulsive, attractive or in non-interacting Bose gas in some range of temperatures below characteristic temperature of the quantum degeneracy. Based on this observation we analyze the quasicondensation in terms of a ratio of the two largest eigenvalues of the single particle density matrix for the ideal gas. We show that in the thermodynamic limit in higher dimensions the second largest eigenvalue vanishes (as compared to the first one) with total number of particles as $\simeq N^{-γ}$ whereas goes to zero only logarithmically in one dimension. We also study the effect of quasicondensation for various geometries of the system: from quasi-1D elongated one, through spherically symmetric 3D case to quasi-2D pancake-like geometry.

Statistical properties of one dimensional attractive Bose gas

Using classical field approximation we present the first study of statistical properties of one dimensional Bose gas with attractive interaction. The canonical probability distribution is generated with the help of a Monte Carlo method. This way we obtain not only the depletion of the condensate with growing temperature but also its fluctuations. The most important is our discovery of a reduced coherence length, the phenomenon observed earlier only for the repulsive gas, known as quasicondensation.

Revivals in the attractive BEC in a double-well potential and their decoherence

We study the dynamics of ultracold attractive atoms in a weakly linked two potential wells. We consider an unbalanced initial state and monitor dynamics of the population difference between the two wells. The average imbalance between wells undergoes damped oscillations, like in a classical counterpart, but then it revives almost to the initial value. We explain in details the whole behavior using three different models of the system. Furthermore we investigate the sensitivity of the revivals on the decoherence caused by one- and three-body losses. We include the dissipative processes using appropriate master equations and solve them using the stochastic wave approximation method.

Statistical properties of one dimensional Bose gas

Monte Carlo method within, so called, classical fields approximation is applied to one dimensional weakly interacting repulsive Bose gas trapped in a harmonic potential. Equilibrium statistical properties of the condensate are calculated within a canonical ensemble. We also calculate experimentally relevant low order correlation functions of the whole gas.

Background atoms and decoherence in optical lattices

All experiments with ultracold atoms are performed in the presence of background residual gas. With the help of a suitable master equation we investigate a role of these fast atoms on the loss of coherence in optical lattices. We present an exact solution of the master equation and give the analytic formulas for all correlation functions in the presence of one body losses. Additionally we discuss existing of a Schrödinger cat state predicted in this system in [1].
