Heat capacity anomaly near magnetic phase transition in GaFeO$_3$

A heat capacity anomaly in the vicinity of magnetic transition was observed in single crystal GaFeO3 for the first time. The crystals grown along the expected electric polarization direction were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer and magnetic measurements. Two separate data analyses of heat capacity showed similar results within the experimental accuracy. Critical exponent, α=-0.2(1), and amplitude ratios of positive and negative reduced temperatures near the critical point, A_+/A_-=1.2(1), are consistent with behavior of a 3-D Heisenberg ferromagnet.

Determination of the sheet resistance of an infinite thin plate with five point contacts located at arbitrary positions

In this paper, a five-probe method of sheet resistance measurement that is independent of probe positions is reported. The method is strict for an infinite homogeneous plane. It has potential applications as a sheet resistance standard based on planar molecular layers. The method can be used to measure the sheet resistance of layers covering objects with a spherical topology, particularly on micro- and nanometric scales, where it is difficult to control probe positioning.

Determination of topological properties of thin samples by the van der Pauw method

We solve the problem of determining basic topological properties of flat samples by performing measurements on their outer edge. The global maximum of four probe resistances shows a characteristic behaviour, which is dependent on the genus (i.e., the number of holes) of the domain. An extension of the van der Pauw method on domains having zero, one, or two holes is presented and discussed. A possibility of measuring topological properties of condensed matter is demonstrated. Experimental results for triply connected domains are presented and explained by continuous symmetry breaking caused by the presence of two holes. The results are consistent with the topological theorem of Hurwitz on the number of automorphisms of Riemann surfaces.

Determination of the electric field gradient and the magnetic field in Mössbauer spectrocsopy by half-cube method

This paper presents a new method to determine all components of the electric field gradient tensor and orientation of the hyperfine magnetic field axis in the absorber Cartesian frame for Mössbauer spectroscopy for nuclear transitions between levels with spin 3/2 and 1/2. The method can be applied for single-crystal absorbers with well separated absorption lines in their spectra. Explicit formulas derived from velocity moments are presented. The new method allows full separation of the electric quadrupolar and magnetic dipolar hyperfine interactions by using unpolarized radiation.
