Self-adjoint realization of the harmonic oscillator in polar coordinates and some consequences

We consider spectral decomposition of the harmonic oscillator in $\mathbb R^n$ in terms of two different orthonormal bases in $L^2(\mathbb R^n)$ consisting of its eigenfunctions. Then, using purely functional analysis tools we provide simple proofs of rotational symmetry of the Hermite projection operators studied by Kochneff, and Thangavelu's Hecke-Bochner type identity.

Variation of the one-dimensional centered maximal operator on simple functions with gaps between pieces

Let $M$ denote the centered Hardy--Littlewood operator on $\mathbb{R}$. We prove that \[ {\rm Var} (Mf)\le {\rm Var} (f) - \frac12\big| |f(\infty)|-|f(-\infty)|\big| \] for piecewise constant functions $f$ with nonzero and zero values alternating. The above inequality strengthens a recent result of Bilz and Weigt \cite{BW} proved for indicator functions of bounded variation vanishing at $\pm\infty$. We conjecture that the inequality holds for all functions of bounded variation, representing a stronger version of the existing conjecture ${\rm Var} (Mf)\le {\rm Var} (f)$. We also obtain the discrete counterpart of our theorem, moreover proving a transference result on equivalency between both settings that is of independent interest.

A transform for the Grushin operator with applications

In the setting of the Grushin differential operator $G=-Δ_{x'}-|x'|^2Δ_{x''}$ with domain ${\rm Dom}\,G=C^\infty_c(\mathbb{R}^d)\subset L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, we define a scalar transform which is a mixture of the partial Fourier transform and a transform based on the scaled Hermite functions. This transform unitarily intertwines $G$ with a multiplication operator by a nonnegative real-valued function on an appropriately associated `dual' space $L^2(Γ)$. This allows to construct a self-adjoint extension $\mathbb G$ of $G$ as a simple realization of this multiplication operator. Another self-adjoint extensions of $G$ are defined in terms of sesquilinear forms and then these extensions are compared. Aditionally, a closed formula for the heat kernel that corresponds to the heat semigroup $\{\exp(-t\mathbb G)\}_{t>0}$ is established.

Spectral analysis of Grushin type operators on the quarter plane

We investigate spectral properties of self-adjoint extensions of the operator $$ G_{α,β}=-\Big(\frac{\partial^2}{\partial r^2}+\frac{2\a+1}{r}\frac{\partial}{\partial r} \Big) -r^2 \Big(\frac{\partial^2}{\partial s^2}+\frac{2\b+1}{s}\frac{\partial}{\partial s} \Big), $$ $\a,\b\in\R$, with domain $\D\, G_{α,β}=C^\infty(\R^2_+)\subset L^2(\R^2_+,r^{2\a+1}s^{2\b+1}drds)$, which for some specific values of $\a,\b$, is a bi-radial part of the Grushin operator. Alternatively, we investigate $G^\circ_{α,β}$, the Liouville form of $G_{α,β}$, which is a symmetric and nonnegative operator on $L^2(\R^2_+, drds)$. One of the main tools used is an integral transform which combines the Laguerre scaled transform and the Hankel transform. Self-adjoint extensions $\mathbb{G}^\circ_{α,β}$ of $G^\circ_{α,β}$ are defined in terms of this transform, and the spectral decompositions of them are given. Another approach to construct self-adjoint extensions of $G^\circ_{α,β}$, based on the technique of sesquilinear forms, is also presented and then the two approaches are compared. We also establish a closed form of the heat kernel corresponding to $\mathbb{G}^\circ_{α,β}$.

Genuinely sharp estimates for heat kernels on Weyl chambers

We consider heat kernels on Weyl chambers corresponding to Laplacians subject to mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions imposed on the boundary. Using purely analytic tools we prove genuinely sharp two-sided global estimates in the frameworks of orthogonal root systems and the dihedral root systems $I_2(3)$ and $I_2(4)$.

Hardy and BMO spaces on Weyl chambers

Let $W$ be a finite reflection group associated with root system $R$ in $\mathbb R^d$. Let $C_+$ denote a positive Weyl chamber distinguished by a choice of $R_+$, a set of positive roots. We define and investigate Hardy and BMO spaces on $C_+$ in the framework of boundary conditions given by a homomorphism $η\in\mathrm{Hom}(W,\hat{\mathbb{Z}}_2)$ which attaches the $\pm$ signs to the facets of $C_+$. Specialized to orthogonal root systems, atomic decompositions in $H^1_η$ and $h^1_η$ are obtained and the duality problem is also treated.

On non-centered maximal operators related to a non-doubling and non-radial exponential measure

We investigate mapping properties of non-centered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operators related to the exponential measure $dμ(x) = \exp(-|x_1|-\ldots-|x_d|)dx$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The mean values are taken over Euclidean balls or cubes ($\ell^{\infty}$ balls) or diamonds ($\ell^1$ balls). Assuming that $d \ge 2$, in the cases of cubes and diamonds we prove the $L^p$-boundedness for $p > 1$ and disprove the weak type $(1,1)$ estimate. The same is proved in the case of Euclidean balls, under the restriction $d \le 4$ for the positive part.

Finite reflection groups and symmetric extensions of Laplacian

Let $W$ be a finite reflection group associated with a root system $R$ in $\mathbb R^d$. Let $C_+$ denote a positive Weyl chamber. Consider an open subset $Ω$ of $\mathbb R^d$, symmetric with respect to reflections from $W$. Let $Ω_+=Ω\cap C_+$ be the positive part of $Ω$. We define a family $\{-Δ_η^+\}$ of self-adjoint extensions of the Laplacian $-Δ_{Ω_+}$, labeled by homomorphisms $η\colon W\to \{1,-1\}$. In the construction of these $η$-Laplacians $η$-symmetrization of functions on $Ω$ is involved. The Neumann Laplacian $-Δ_{N,Ω_+}$ is included and corresponds to $η\equiv1$. If $H^{1}(Ω)=H^{1}_0(Ω)$, then the Dirichlet Laplacian $-Δ_{D,Ω_+}$ is either included and corresponds to $η={\rm sgn}$; otherwise the Dirichlet Laplacian is considered separately. Applying the spectral functional calculus we consider the pairs of operators $Ψ(-Δ_{N,Ω})$ and $Ψ(-Δ_η^+)$, or $Ψ(-Δ_{D,Ω})$ and $Ψ(-Δ_{D,Ω_+})$, where $Ψ$ is a Borel function on $[0,\infty)$. We prove relations between the integral kernels for the operators in these pairs, which are given in terms of symmetries governed by $W$.

Reflection principles for functions of Neumann and Dirichlet Laplacians on open reflection invariant subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$

For an open subset $Ω$ of $\mathbb R^d$, symmetric with respect to a hyperplane and with positive part $Ω_+$, we consider the Neumann/Dirichlet Laplacians $-Δ_{N/D,Ω}$ and $-Δ_{N/D,Ω_+}$. Given a Borel function $Φ$ on $[0,\infty)$ we apply the spectral functional calculus and consider the pairs of operators $Φ(-Δ_{N,Ω})$ and $Φ(-Δ_{N,Ω_+})$, or $Φ(-Δ_{D,Ω})$ and $Φ(-Δ_{D,Ω_+})$. We prove relations between the integral kernels for the operators in these pairs, which in particular cases of $Ω_+=\mathbb{R}^{d-1}\times(0,\infty)$ and $Φ_{t}(u)=\exp(-tu)$, $u \geq 0$, $t>0$, were known as reflection principles for the Neumann/Dirichlet heat kernels. These relations are then generalized to the context of symmetry with respect to a finite number of mutually orthogonal hyperplanes.

On Harmonic Analysis Operators in Laguerre-Dunkl and Laguerre-Symmetrized Settings

We study several fundamental harmonic analysis operators in the multi-dimensional context of the Dunkl harmonic oscillator and the underlying group of reflections isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_2^d$. Noteworthy, we admit negative values of the multiplicity functions. Our investigations include maximal operators, $g$-functions, Lusin area integrals, Riesz transforms and multipliers of Laplace and Laplace-Stieltjes type. By means of the general Calderón-Zygmund theory we prove that these operators are bounded on weighted $L^p$ spaces, $1 < p < \infty$, and from weighted $L^1$ to weighted weak $L^1$. We also obtain similar results for analogous set of operators in the closely related multi-dimensional Laguerre-symmetrized framework. The latter emerges from a symmetrization procedure proposed recently by the first two authors. As a by-product of the main developments we get some new results in the multi-dimensional Laguerre function setting of convolution type.

Potential operators associated with Hankel and Hankel-Dunkl transforms

We study Riesz and Bessel potentials in the settings of Hankel transform, modified Hankel transform and Hankel-Dunkl transform. We prove sharp or qualitatively sharp pointwise estimates of the corresponding potential kernels. Then we characterize those $1\le p,q \le \infty$, for which the potential operators satisfy $L^p-L^q$ estimates. In case of the Riesz potentials, we also characterize those $1\le p,q \le \infty$, for which two-weight $L^p-L^q$ estimates, with power weights involved, hold. As a special case of our results, we obtain a full characterization of two power-weight $L^p-L^q$ bounds for the classical Riesz potentials in the radial case. This complements an old result of Rubin and its recent reinvestigations by De Nápoli, Drelichman and Durán, and Duoandikoetxea.

Sharp estimates for potential operators associated with Laguerre and Dunkl-Laguerre expansions

We study potential operators associated with Laguerre function expansions of convolution and Hermite types, and with Dunkl-Laguerre expansions. We prove qualitatively sharp estimates of the corresponding potential kernels. Then we characterize those $1 \le p,q \le \infty$, for which the potential operators are $L^p-L^q$ bounded. These results are sharp analogues of the classical Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev fractional integration theorem in the Laguerre and Dunkl-Laguerre settings.

On $L^p$-contractivity of Laguerre semigroups

We study several Laguerre semigroups appearing in the literature and find sharp ranges of type parameters for which these semigroups are contractive on all $L^p$ spaces, $1\le p \le \infty$. We also answer a similar question for Bessel semigroups, which in a sense are closely related to the Laguerre semigroups.

A symmetrized conjugacy scheme for orthogonal expansions

We establish a symmetrization procedure in a context of general orthogonal expansions associated with a second order differential operator $L$, a `Laplacian'. Combined with a unified conjugacy scheme furnished in our earlier article it allows, via a suitable embedding, to associate a differential-difference `Laplacian' $\mathbb{L}$ with the initially given orthogonal system of eigenfunctions of $L$, so that the resulting extended conjugacy scheme has the natural classical shape. This means, in particular, that the related `partial derivatives' decomposing $\mathbb{L}$ are skew-symmetric in an appropriate $L^2$ space and they commute with Riesz transforms and conjugate Poisson integrals. The results shed also some new light on the question of defining higher order Riesz transforms for general orthogonal expansions.

Negative powers of Laguerre operators

We study negative powers of Laguerre differential operators in $\R$, $d\ge1$. For these operators we prove two-weight $L^p-L^q$ estimates, with ranges of $q$ depending on $p$. The case of the harmonic oscillator (Hermite operator) has recently been treated by Bongioanni and Torrea by using a straightforward approach of kernel estimates. Here these results are applied in certain Laguerre settings. The procedure is fairly direct for Laguerre function expansions of Hermite type, due to some monotonicity properties of the kernels involved. The case of Laguerre function expansions of convolution type is less straightforward. For half-integer type indices $α$ we transfer the desired results from the Hermite setting and then apply an interpolation argument based on a device we call the {\sl convexity principle} to cover the continuous range of $α\in[-1/2,\infty)^d$. Finally, we investigate negative powers of the Dunkl harmonic oscillator in the context of a finite reflection group acting on $\R$ and isomorphic to $\mathbb Z^d_2$. The two weight $L^p-L^q$ estimates we obtain in this setting are essentially consequences of those for Laguerre function expansions of convolution type.

Imaginary Powers of the Dunkl Harmonic Oscillator

In this paper we continue the study of spectral properties of the Dunkl harmonic oscillator in the context of a finite reflection group on $\mathbb{R}^d$ isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^d_2$. We prove that imaginary powers of this operator are bounded on $L^p$, $1<p<\infty$, and from $L^1$ into weak $L^1$.
