Two Variables and Two-Dimensional Structures

We study the two-variable fragment FO^2 of first-order logic over two-dimensional structures. Formulae may employ two linear orders <=_1, <=_2, their successor relations S_1, S_2, and auxiliary predicates of any arity. Despite two decades of work, three cases of finite satisfiability in this setting were still open; we settle all three. First, finite satisfiability of FO^2 with one linear order and one successor relation, of the same or of a different order, is NExpTime-complete, even with arbitrary auxiliary predicates and constant symbols. This closes a gap left open by Manuel and Zeume (CSL 2013). As an application, a reduction based on swaps of adjacent elements shows that order-invariance and order-successor-invariance of FO^2 are coNExpTime-complete. This reproves the main result of Zeume and Harwath (LICS 2016) and settles their question on order-successor-invariance. Second, finite satisfiability of FO^2 with two linear orders is ExpSpace-hard, already without auxiliary non-unary predicates, matching the upper bound known since 2010. Our reduction combines Kieronski's encoding of alternating Turing machines with the classical fact that the pre-order and post-order traversals of a tree define its descendant relation. Third, with two linear orders and the successor of one of them, finite satisfiability is in ExpSpace even with arbitrary auxiliary predicates, improving the previous 2NExpTime bound and confirming a conjecture of Zeume and Harwath. Together with known results, our theorems show that in two dimensions, auxiliary (non-unary) predicates and constants come for free: with or without them, the complexities coincide. All our proofs are simple.

Electrical polarization switching in bulk single crystal GaFeO$_{3}$

The electrical polarization switching on stoichiometric GaFeO$_{3}$ single crystal was measured, and a new model of atomic displacements responsible for the polarization reverse was proposed. The widely adapted mechanism of polarization switching in GaFeO$_{3}$ can be applied to stoichiometric, perfectly ordered crystals. However, the grown single crystals, as well as thin films of Ga-Fe-O, show pronounced atomic disorder. By piezoresponse force microscopy, the electrical polarization switching on a crystal surface perpendicular to the electrical polarization direction was demonstrated. Atomic disorder in the crystal was measured by X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. These measurements were supported by ab initio calculations. By analysis of atomic disorder and electronic structure calculations, the energies of defects of cations in foreign cationic sites were estimated. The energies of the polarization switch were estimated, confirming the proposed mechanism of polarization switching in GaFeO$_{3}$ single crystals.

Determination of the Riemann modulus and sheet resistivity by a six-point generalization of the van der Pauw method

Six point generalization of the van der Pauw method is presented. The method is applicable for two dimensional homogeneous systems with an isolated hole. A single measurement performed on the contacts located arbitrarily on the sample edge allows to determine the specific resistivity and a dimensionless parameter related to the hole, known as the Riemann modulus. The parameter is invariant under conformal mappings of the sample shape. The hole can be regarded as a high resistivity defect. Therefore the method can be applied for experimental determination of the sample inhomogeneity.

Determination of the Riemann modulus and sheet resistance of a sample with a hole by the van der Pauw method

The van der Pauw method for two-dimensional samples of arbitrary shape with an isolated hole is considered. Correlations between extreme values of the resistances allow one to determine the specific resistivity of the sample and the dimensionless parameter related to the geometry of the isolated hole, known as the Riemann modulus. The parameter is invariant under conformal mappings. Experimental verification of the method is presented.

Van der Pauw method on a sample with an isolated hole

Explicit results of the van der Pauw method for a sample containing an isolated hole are presented together with experimental confirmation. Results of measurements and numerical analysis strongly suggest that four probe resistivities obey inequality similar in the form to the famous van der Pauw equation. The inequality seems to be valid for any sample with an isolated hole and contacts located on the same edge, however rigorous proof is not given. The inequality can be used for experimental detection of the sample quality.
