Direct Probing of Quantum Phase Space by Photon Counting

We propose a very simple experimental setup to measure, via photon counting, the overlap of the Wigner functions characterizing two single mode light beams. We show that this scheme can be applied to determine directly the phase space quasiprobability distribution of the single mode field and in a certain limit the Wigner function can be measured without use of tomographic reconstruction algorithms. The deleterious effects of non--unit photodetector efficiency are analyzed.

Operational Theory of the Eight-Port Homodyne Detection

The eight-port homodyne detection apparatus is analyzed in the framework of the operational theory of quantum measurement. For an arbitrary quantum noise leaking through the unused port of the beam splitter, the positive operator valued measure and the corresponding operational homodyne observables are derived. It is shown that such an eight-port homodyne device can be used to construct the operational quantum trigonometry of an optical field. The quantum trigonometry and the corresponding phase space Wigner functions are derived for a signal field probed by a classical local oscillator and a squeezed vacuum in the unused port.

Accuracy of Sampling Quantum Phase Space in Photon Counting Experiment

We study the accuracy of determining the phase space quasidistribution of a single quantized light mode by a photon counting experiment. We derive an exact analytical formula for the error of the experimental outcome. This result provides an estimation for the experimental parameters, such as the number of events, required to determine the quasidistribution with assumed precision. Our analysis also shows that it is in general not possible to compensate the imperfectness of the photodetector in a numerical processing of the experimental data. The discussion is illustrated with Monte Carlo simulations of the photon counting experiment for the coherent state, the one photon Fock state, and the Schroedinger cat state.

Operational Theory of Homodyne Detection

We discuss a balanced homodyne detection scheme with imperfect detectors in the framework of the operational approach to quantum measurement. We show that a realistic homodyne measurement is described by a family of operational observables that depends on the experimental setup, rather than a single field quadrature operator. We find an explicit form of this family, which fully characterizes the experimental device and is independent of a specific state of the measured system. We also derive operational homodyne observables for the setup with a random phase, which has been recently applied in an ultrafast measurement of the photon statistics of a pulsed diode laser. The operational formulation directly gives the relation between the detected noise and the intrinsic quantum fluctuations of the measured field. We demonstrate this on two examples: the operational uncertainty relation for the field quadratures, and the homodyne detection of suppressed fluctuations in photon statistics.

Intrinsic and Operational Observables in Quantum Mechanics

The concept of intrinsic and operational observables in quantum mechanics is introduced. It is argued that, in any realistic description of a quantum measurement that includes a detecting device, it is possible to construct from the statistics of the recorded raw data a set of operational quantities that correspond to the intrinsic quantum mechanical observable. Using the concept of the propensity and the associated operational positive operator valued measure (POVM) a general description of the operational algebra of quantum mechanical observables is derived for a wide class of realistic detection schemes. This general approach is illustrated by the example of an operational Malus measurement of the spin phases and by an analysis of the operational homodyne detection of the phase of an optical field with a squeezed vacuum in the unused ports.
