Low-complexity Joint Beamforming for RIS-Aided Multi-User Downlink over Correlated Channels

This paper considers the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted multi-user communications, where an RIS is used to assist the base station (BS) for serving multiple users. The RIS consisting of passive reflecting elements can manipulate the reflected direction of the incoming electromagnetic waves by adjusting the phase shifts of the reflecting elements. Alternating optimization (AO) based approach is commonly used to determine the phase shifts of the RIS elements. While AO-based approaches have shown significant gain of RIS, the complexity is quite high due to the coupled structure of the cascade channel from the BS through RIS to the user. In addition, the sub-wavelength structure of the RIS introduces spatial correlation that may cause strong interference to users. To handle severe multi-user interference over correlated channels, we consider adaptive user grouping previously proposed for massive mutli-input and multi-output (MIMO) systems and propose two low-complexity beamforming design methods, depending on whether the grouping result is taken into account. Simulation results demonstrate the superior sum rate achieved by the proposed methods than that without user grouping. Besides, the proposed methods can perform similarly to the AO-based approach but with much lower complexity.

Low SNR Capacity of Keyhole MIMO Channel in Nakagami-m Fading With Full CSI

In this paper, we obtain asymptotic expressions for the ergodic capacity of the keyhole multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in independent and identically distributed Nakagami-$m$ fading conditions with perfect channel state information at the transmitter and receiver. We show that the low-SNR capacity of this keyhole MIMO channel scales proportionally as $\frac{\textrm{SNR}}{4} \log^2 \left(1/{\textrm{SNR}}\right)$. Our main contribution is to identify a surprising result that the low-SNR capacity of the MIMO fading channel increases in the presence of keyhole degenerate condition, which is in direct contrast to the well-known MIMO capacity degradation at high SNR under keyhole conditions. To explain why rank-deficient keyhole fading channel outperforms the full-rank MIMO fading channel at sufficiently low-SNR, we remark that the rank of the MIMO channel matrix has no impact in the low-SNR regime and that the double-faded (or double-scattering) nature of the keyhole MIMO channel creates more opportunistic communications at low-SNR when compared with pure MIMO fading channel which leads to increased capacity. Finally, we also show that a simple one-bit channel information based on-off power control achieves this low-SNR capacity; surprisingly, this power adaptation is robust against both moderate and severe fading for a wide range of low SNR values. These results also hold for the keyhole MIMO Rayleigh channel as a special case.

Quasi-Degradation Probability of Two-User NOMA over Rician Fading Channels

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has a great potential to offer a higher spectral efficiency of multi-user wireless networks than orthogonal multiples access (OMA). Previous work has established the condition, referred to quasi-degradation (QD) probability, under which NOMA has no performance loss compared to the capacity-achieving dirty paper coding for the two-user case. Existing results assume Rayleigh fading channels without line-of-sight (LOS). In many practical scenarios, the channel LOS component is critical to the link quality where the channel gain follows a Rician distribution instead of a Rayleigh distribution. In this work, we analyze the QD probability over multi-input and single-output (MISO) channels subject to Rician fading. The QD probability heavily depends on the angle between two user channels, which involves a matrix quadratic form in random vectors and a stochastic matrix. With the deterministic LOS component, the distribution of the matrix quadratic form is non-central that dramatically complicates the derivation of the QD probability. To remedy this difficulty, a series of approximations is proposed that yields a closed-form expression for the QD probability over MISO Rician channels. Numerical results are presented to assess the analysis accuracy and get insights into the optimality of NOMA over Rician fading channels.

Battery-Aware Relay Selection for Energy Harvesting Cooperative Networks

The use of energy harvesting (EH) nodes as cooperative relays is an emerging solution for enabling green wireless systems. In this paper, we consider multiple EH relay nodes harvesting energy from the radio frequency (RF) signal received from the source and use that harvested energy to forward the source information to the destination. Unlike conventional relays with fixed power supplies, EH relays may not be permanently available to assist the source transmission due to the limited energy conversion efficiency, the mismatch between the charging and discharging profiles, and the finite energy storage capacity. We propose the battery-aware relay selection (BARS) scheme, which jointly considers the channel condition and the battery status for relay selection. The outage probability of the proposed scheme is analyzed using a Markov chain model. Simulations are performed to validate the analysis accuracy. Through numerical results, we show that the proposed BARS scheme can achieve full diversity order equal to the number of relays without the need of fixed power cables.
