Event-based High Dynamic Range Image and Very High Frame Rate Video Generation using Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks

Event cameras have a lot of advantages over traditional cameras, such as low latency, high temporal resolution, and high dynamic range. However, since the outputs of event cameras are the sequences of asynchronous events overtime rather than actual intensity images, existing algorithms could not be directly applied. Therefore, it is demanding to generate intensity images from events for other tasks. In this paper, we unlock the potential of event camera-based conditional generative adversarial networks to create images/videos from an adjustable portion of the event data stream. The stacks of space-time coordinates of events are used as inputs and the network is trained to reproduce images based on the spatio-temporal intensity changes. The usefulness of event cameras to generate high dynamic range(HDR) images even in extreme illumination conditions and also non blurred images under rapid motion is also shown. In addition, the possibility of generating very high frame rate videos is demonstrated, theoretically up to 1 million frames per second (FPS) since the temporal resolution of event cameras are about 1μs. Proposed methods are evaluated by comparing the results with the intensity images captured on the same pixel grid-line of events using online available real datasets and synthetic datasets produced by the event camera simulator.

Consistent Multiple Graph Matching with Multi-layer Random Walks Synchronization

We address the correspondence search problem among multiple graphs with complex properties while considering the matching consistency. We describe each pair of graphs by combining multiple attributes, then jointly match them in a unified framework. The main contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we formulate the global correspondence search problem of multi-attributed graphs by utilizing a set of multi-layer structures. The proposed formulation describes each pair of graphs as a multi-layer structure, and jointly considers whole matching pairs. Second, we propose a robust multiple graph matching method based on the multi-layer random walks framework. The proposed framework synchronizes movements of random walkers, and leads them to consistent matching candidates. In our extensive experiments, the proposed method exhibits robust and accurate performance over the state-of-the-art multiple graph matching algorithms.

Inertial-aided Rolling Shutter Relative Pose Estimation

Relative pose estimation is a fundamental problem in computer vision and it has been studied for conventional global shutter cameras for decades. However, recently, a rolling shutter camera has been widely used due to its low cost imaging capability and, since the rolling shutter camera captures the image line-by-line, the relative pose estimation of a rolling shutter camera is more difficult than that of a global shutter camera. In this paper, we propose to exploit inertial measurements (gravity and angular velocity) for the rolling shutter relative pose estimation problem. The inertial measurements provide information about the partial relative rotation between two views (cameras) and the instantaneous motion that causes the rolling shutter distortion. Based on this information, we simplify the rolling shutter relative pose estimation problem and propose effective methods to solve it. Unlike the previous methods, which require 44 (linear) or 17 (nonlinear) points with the uniform rolling shutter camera model, the proposed methods require at most 9 or 11 points to estimate the relative pose between the rolling shutter cameras. Experimental results on synthetic data and the public PennCOSYVIO dataset show that the proposed methods outperform the existing methods.

Distance-based Camera Network Topology Inference for Person Re-identification

In this paper, we propose a novel distance-based camera network topology inference method for efficient person re-identification. To this end, we first calibrate each camera and estimate relative scales between cameras. Using the calibration results of multiple cameras, we calculate the speed of each person and infer the distance between cameras to generate distance-based camera network topology. The proposed distance-based topology can be applied adaptively to each person according to its speed and handle diverse transition time of people between non-overlapping cameras. To validate the proposed method, we tested the proposed method using an open person re-identification dataset and compared to state-of-the-art methods. The experimental results show that the proposed method is effective for person re-identification in the large-scale camera network with various people transition time.

Joint Person Re-identification and Camera Network Topology Inference in Multiple Cameras

Person re-identification is the task of recognizing or identifying a person across multiple views in multi-camera networks. Although there has been much progress in person re-identification, person re-identification in large-scale multi-camera networks still remains a challenging task because of the large spatio-temporal uncertainty and high complexity due to a large number of cameras and people. To handle these difficulties, additional information such as camera network topology should be provided, which is also difficult to automatically estimate, unfortunately. In this study, we propose a unified framework which jointly solves both person re-identification and camera network topology inference problems with minimal prior knowledge about the environments. The proposed framework takes general multi-camera network environments into account and can be applied to online person re-identification in large-scale multi-camera networks. In addition, to effectively show the superiority of the proposed framework, we provide a new person re-identification dataset with full annotations, named SLP, captured in the multi-camera network consisting of nine non-overlapping cameras. Experimental results using our person re-identification and public datasets show that the proposed methods are promising for both person re-identification and camera topology inference tasks.

Automatic Content-aware Projection for 360° Videos

To watch 360° videos on normal 2D displays, we need to project the selected part of the 360° image onto the 2D display plane. In this paper, we propose a fully-automated framework for generating content-aware 2D normal-view perspective videos from 360° videos. Especially, we focus on the projection step preserving important image contents and reducing image distortion. Basically, our projection method is based on Pannini projection model. At first, the salient contents such as linear structures and salient regions in the image are preserved by optimizing the single Panini projection model. Then, the multiple Panini projection models at salient regions are interpolated to suppress image distortion globally. Finally, the temporal consistency for image projection is enforced for producing temporally stable normal-view videos. Our proposed projection method does not require any user-interaction and is much faster than previous content-preserving methods. It can be applied to not only images but also videos taking the temporal consistency of projection into account. Experiments on various 360° videos show the superiority of the proposed projection method quantitatively and qualitatively.

Joint Layout Estimation and Global Multi-View Registration for Indoor Reconstruction

In this paper, we propose a novel method to jointly solve scene layout estimation and global registration problems for accurate indoor 3D reconstruction. Given a sequence of range data, we first build a set of scene fragments using KinectFusion and register them through pose graph optimization. Afterwards, we alternate between layout estimation and layout-based global registration processes in iterative fashion to complement each other. We extract the scene layout through hierarchical agglomerative clustering and energy-based multi-model fitting in consideration of noisy measurements. Having the estimated scene layout in one hand, we register all the range data through the global iterative closest point algorithm where the positions of 3D points that belong to the layout such as walls and a ceiling are constrained to be close to the layout. We experimentally verify the proposed method with the publicly available synthetic and real-world datasets in both quantitative and qualitative ways.

Exploiting Feature Confidence for Forward Motion Estimation

Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO) utilizes an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to overcome the limitations of Visual Odometry (VO). However, the VIO for vehicles in large-scale outdoor environments still has some difficulties in estimating forward motion with distant features. To solve these difficulties, we propose a robust VIO method based on the analysis of feature confidence in forward motion estimation using an IMU. We first formulate the VIO problem by using effective trifocal tensor geometry. Then, we infer the feature confidence by using the motion information obtained from an IMU and incorporate the confidence into the Bayesian estimation framework. Experimental results on the public KITTI dataset show that the proposed VIO outperforms the baseline VIO, and it also demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed feature confidence analysis and confidence-incorporated egomotion estimation framework.

PaMM: Pose-aware Multi-shot Matching for Improving Person Re-identification

Person re-identification is the problem of recognizing people across different images or videos with non-overlapping views. Although there has been much progress in person re-identification over the last decade, it remains a challenging task because appearances of people can seem extremely different across diverse camera viewpoints and person poses. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for person re-identification by analyzing camera viewpoints and person poses in a so-called Pose-aware Multi-shot Matching (PaMM), which robustly estimates people's poses and efficiently conducts multi-shot matching based on pose information. Experimental results using public person re-identification datasets show that the proposed methods outperform state-of-the-art methods and are promising for person re-identification from diverse viewpoints and pose variances.

Exploiting Multi-layer Graph Factorization for Multi-attributed Graph Matching

Multi-attributed graph matching is a problem of finding correspondences between two sets of data while considering their complex properties described in multiple attributes. However, the information of multiple attributes is likely to be oversimplified during a process that makes an integrated attribute, and this degrades the matching accuracy. For that reason, a multi-layer graph structure-based algorithm has been proposed recently. It can effectively avoid the problem by separating attributes into multiple layers. Nonetheless, there are several remaining issues such as a scalability problem caused by the huge matrix to describe the multi-layer structure and a back-projection problem caused by the continuous relaxation of the quadratic assignment problem. In this work, we propose a novel multi-attributed graph matching algorithm based on the multi-layer graph factorization. We reformulate the problem to be solved with several small matrices that are obtained by factorizing the multi-layer structure. Then, we solve the problem using a convex-concave relaxation procedure for the multi-layer structure. The proposed algorithm exhibits better performance than state-of-the-art algorithms based on the single-layer structure.

Monocular Visual Odometry with a Rolling Shutter Camera

Rolling Shutter (RS) cameras have become popularized because of low-cost imaging capability. However, the RS cameras suffer from undesirable artifacts when the camera or the subject is moving, or illumination condition changes. For that reason, Monocular Visual Odometry (MVO) with RS cameras produces inaccurate ego-motion estimates. Previous works solve this RS distortion problem with motion prediction from images and/or inertial sensors. However, the MVO still has trouble in handling the RS distortion when the camera motion changes abruptly (e.g. vibration of mobile cameras causes extremely fast motion instantaneously). To address the problem, we propose the novel MVO algorithm in consideration of the geometric characteristics of RS cameras. The key idea of the proposed algorithm is the new RS essential matrix which incorporates the instantaneous angular and linear velocities at each frame. Our algorithm produces accurate and robust ego-motion estimates in an online manner, and is applicable to various mobile applications with RS cameras. The superiority of the proposed algorithm is validated through quantitative and qualitative comparison on both synthetic and real dataset.
