X-Ray spectroscopy and timing (XSPECT) experiment on XPoSat -- instrument configuration and science prospects

X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) with POLarimeter Instrument in X-rays (POLIX), is India's first spacecraft dedicated to study medium energy X-ray polarisation from celestial objects. X-Ray Spectroscopy and Timing (XSPECT) instrument on XPoSat is configured to study long term spectral behaviour of select sources in Soft X-ray regime. The instrument uses Swept Charge Devices (SCD)s to provide large area and spectral performance with passive cooling arrangement. The instrument consists of set of collimators with two different FOVs, optical light blocking filters, and signal processing electronics. The instrument was designed, tested and calibrated on ground. The unique opportunity is provided by ISRO's XPoSat mission, where a source is observed for longer duration. The device used also enables spectroscopy study of brighter sources compared to the CCD based spectrometers. The first results demonstrate instrument capability for spectral studies in the 0.8 keV-15 keV energy band.

Utilizing Semantic Visual Landmarks for Precise Vehicle Navigation

This paper presents a new approach for integrating semantic information for vision-based vehicle navigation. Although vision-based vehicle navigation systems using pre-mapped visual landmarks are capable of achieving submeter level accuracy in large-scale urban environment, a typical error source in this type of systems comes from the presence of visual landmarks or features from temporal objects in the environment, such as cars and pedestrians. We propose a gated factor graph framework to use semantic information associated with visual features to make decisions on outlier/ inlier computation from three perspectives: the feature tracking process, the geo-referenced map building process, and the navigation system using pre-mapped landmarks. The class category that the visual feature belongs to is extracted from a pre-trained deep learning network trained for semantic segmentation. The feasibility and generality of our approach is demonstrated by our implementations on top of two vision-based navigation systems. Experimental evaluations validate that the injection of semantic information associated with visual landmarks using our approach achieves substantial improvements in accuracy on GPS-denied navigation solutions for large-scale urban scenarios

SoLEXS - A low-energy X-ray Spectrometer for Solar Coronal Studies

A Solar Low-energy X-ray Spectrometer (SoLEXS), a high spectral resolution (\leq 250 eV at 5.9 keV) instrument with soft X-ray energy coverage (\leq 1.5 keV), is being proposed as an additional payload on-board Aditya-1. The motivation behind this is to complement the visible emission line space solar coronagraph, the main payload on Aditya-1. The science goals in which SoLEXS data will compliment the main payload are: (i) Understanding of DC heating mechanism, (ii) Studies on the Flare-CME relations from the same platform, (iii) Independent and accurate estimates of temperature and emission measure at the flaring sites, and (iv) Coronal abundance studies and its variations during flares. Apart from these four major science goals, this instrument in principle can provide a flare trigger to the main payload and help in optimizing the on-board memory storage.

UWISH2 -- The UKIRT Widefield Infrared Survey for H2

We present the goals and preliminary results of an unbiased, near-infrared, narrow-band imaging survey of the First Galactic Quadrant (10deg<l<65deg ; -1.3deg<b<+1.3deg). This area includes most of the Giant Molecular Clouds and massive star forming regions in the northern hemisphere. The survey is centred on the 1-0S(1) ro-vibrational line of H2, a proven tracer of hot, dense molecular gas in star-forming regions, around evolved stars, and in supernova remnants. The observations complement existing and upcoming photometric surveys (Spitzer-GLIMPSE, UKIDSS-GPS, JCMT-JPS, AKARI, Herschel Hi-GAL, etc.), though we probe a dynamically active component of star formation not covered by these broad-band surveys. Our narrow-band survey is currently more than 60% complete. The median seeing in our images is 0.73arcsec. The images have a 5sigma detection limit of point sources of K=18mag and the surface brightness limit is 10^-19Wm^-2arcsec^-2 when averaged over our typical seeing. Jets and outflows from both low and high mass Young Stellar Objects are revealed, as are new Planetary Nebulae and - via a comparison with earlier K-band observations acquired as part of the UKIDSS GPS - numerous variable stars. With their superior spatial resolution, the UWISH2 data also have the potential to reveal the true nature of many of the Extended Green Objects found in the GLIMPSE survey.
