Gravitational probe of quantum spacetime

A quest for phenomenological footprints of quantum gravity is among the central scientific tasks in the rising era of gravitational wave astronomy. We study gravitational wave dynamics within the noncommutative geometry framework, based on a Drinfeld twist and newly proposed noncommutative Einstein equation, and obtain the leading quantum correction to Regge-Wheeler potential up to first order in the noncommutativity parameter. By calculating the quasinormal mode frequencies we show that the noncommutative Schwarzschild black hole remains stable under axial gravitational perturbations.

Noncommutativity and logarithmic correction to the black hole entropy

We study the noncommutative corrections to the entropy of the Reissner-Nordström black hole using a $κ$-deformed scalar probe within the brick-wall framework. The noncommutativity is encoded in an Abelian Drinfeld twist constructed from the Killing vector fields of the Reissner-Nordström black hole. We show that the noncommutative effects naturally lead to a logarithmic correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy even at the lowest order of the WKB approximation. In contrast, such logarithmic corrections in the commutative setup appear only after the quantum effects are included through higher order WKB corrections or through higher loop effects. Our analysis thus provides further evidence towards the hypothesis that the noncommutative framework is capable of encoding quantum effects in curved spacetime.

Exact relaxation dynamics and quantum information scrambling in multiply quenched harmonic chains

The quantum dynamics of isolated systems under quench condition exhibits a variety of interesting features depending on the integrable/chaotic nature of system. We study the exact dynamics of trivially integrable system of harmonic chains under a multiple quench protocol. Out of time ordered correlator of two Hermitian operators at large time displays scrambling in the thermodynamic limit. In this limit, the entanglement entropy and the central component of momentum distribution both saturate to a steady state value. We also show that reduced density matrix assumes the diagonal form long after multiple quenches for large system size. These exact results involving infinite dimensional Hilbert space are indicative of local thermal behaviour for a trivially integrable harmonic chain.

Noncommutativity and the Weak Cosmic Censorship

We show that a noncommutative massless scalar probe can dress a naked singularity in $AdS_3$ spacetime, consistent with the weak cosmic censorship. The dressing occurs at high energies, which is typical at the Planck scale. Using a noncommutative duality, we show that the dressed singularity has the geometry of a rotating BTZ black hole which satisfies all the laws of black hole thermodynamics. We calculate the entropy and the quasi-normal modes of the dressed singularity and show that the corresponding spacetime can be quantum mechanically complete. The noncommutative duality also gives rise to a light scalar, which can be relevant for early universe cosmology.

Orthogonality catastrophe and fractional exclusion statistics

We show that the $N$-particle Sutherland model with inverse-square and harmonic interactions exhibits orthogonality catastrophe. For a fixed value of the harmonic coupling, the overlap of the $N$-body ground state wave functions with two different values of the inverse-square interaction term goes to zero in the thermodynamic limit. When the two values of the inverse-square coupling differ by an infinitesimal amount, the wave function overlap shows an exponential suppression. This is qualitatively different from the usual power law suppression observed in the Anderson's orthogonality catastrophe. We also obtain an analytic expression for the wave function overlaps for an arbitrary set of couplings, whose properties are analyzed numerically. The quasiparticles constituting the ground state wave functions of the Sutherland model are known to obey fractional exclusion statistics. Our analysis indicates that the orthogonality catastrophe may be valid in systems with more general kinds of statistics than just the fermionic type.

Entanglement dynamics following a sudden quench: an exact solution

We present an exact and fully analytical treatment of the entanglement dynamics for an isolated system of $N$ coupled oscillators following a sudden quench of the system parameters. The system is analyzed using the solutions of the time dependent Schrodinger's equation, which are obtained by solving the corresponding nonlinear Ermakov equations. The entanglement entropies exhibit a multi-oscillatory behaviour, where the number of dynamically generated time scales increases with $N$. The harmonic chains exhibit entanglement revival and for larger values of $N (> 10)$, we find near-critical logarithmic scaling for the entanglement entropy, which is modulated by a time dependent factor. The $N=2$ case is equivalent to the two site Bose-Hubbard model in the tunneling regime, which is amenable to empirical realization in cold atom systems.

Twisted statistics and the structure of Lie-deformed Minkowski spaces

We show that the realizations of noncommutative coordinates that are linear in the Lorentz generators form a closed Lie algebra under certain conditions. The star product and the coproduct for the momentum generators are obtained for these Lie algebras and the corresponding twist satisfies the cocycle and normalization conditions. We also obtain the twisted flip operator and the $\mathcal R$-matrix that define the statistics of particles or quantum fields propagating in these noncommutative spacetimes. The Lie algebra obtained in this work contains a special case which has been used in the literature to put bounds on noncommutative parameters from the experimental limits on Pauli forbidden transitions. The general covariant framework presented here is suitable for analyzing the properties of particles or quantum fields at the Planck scale.

Conformal quantum mechanics and holography in noncommutative space-time

We analyze the effects of noncommutativity in conformal quantum mechanics (CQM) using the $κ$-deformed space-time as a prototype. Upto the first order in the deformation parameter, the symmetry structure of the CQM algebra is preserved but the coupling in a canonical model of the CQM gets deformed. We show that the boundary conditions that ensure a unitary time evolution in the noncommutative CQM can break the scale invariance, leading to a quantum mechanical scaling anomaly. We calculate the scaling dimensions of the two and three point functions in the noncommutative CQM which are shown to be deformed. The $AdS_2/CFT_1$ duality for the CQM suggests that the corresponding correlation functions in the holographic duals are modified. In addition, the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound also picks up a noncommutative correction. The strongly attractive regime of a canonical model of the CQM exhibit quantum instability. We show that the noncommutativity softens this singular behaviour and its implications for the corresponding holographic duals are discussed.

Noncommutative duality and fermionic quasinormal modes of the BTZ black hole

We analyze the fermionic quasinormal modes of the BTZ black hole in the presence of space-time noncommutativity. Our analysis exploits a duality between a spinless and spinning BTZ black hole, the spin being proportional to the noncommutative deformation parameter. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we show that the horizon temperatures obtained from the dual CFT pick up noncommutative contributions. We demonstrate the equivalence between the quasinormal and non-quasinormal modes for the noncommutative fermionic probes, which provides further evidence of holography in the noncommutative setting. Finally we present an analysis of the emission of Dirac fermions and the corresponding tunneling amplitude within this noncommutative framework.

Emergence of Coherent Nanoscale Structures in Carbon Nantotubes

Recently unusual properties of water in single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) with diameters ranging from 1.05 nm to 1.52 nm were observed. It was found that water in the CNT remains in an ice-like phase even when the temperature ranges between 105 - 151 C and 87 - 117 C for CNTs with diameters 1.05 nm and 1.06 nm respectively. Apart from the high freezing points, the solid-liquid phase transition temperature was found to be strongly sensitive to the CNT diameter. In this paper we show that water in such CNT's can admit coherent nanoscale structures provided certain conditions are met. The formation of such coherent structures allows for high values of solid-liquid phase transition temperatures that are in qualitative agreement with the empirical data. The model also predicts that the phase transition temperature scales inversely with the square of the effective radius available for the water flow within the CNT. This is consistent with the observed sensitive dependence of the solid-liquid phase transition temperature on the CNT diameter.

Noncommutative scalar quasinormal modes and quantization of entropy of a BTZ black hole

We obtain an exact analytic expression for the quasinormal modes of a noncommutative massless scalar field in the background of a massive spinless BTZ black hole up to the first order in the deformation parameter. We also show that the equations of motion governing these quasinormal modes are identical in form to the equations of motion of a commutative massive scalar field in the background of a fictitious massive spinning BTZ black hole. This results hints at a duality between the commutative and noncommutative systems in the background of a BTZ black hole. Using the obtained results for quasinormal mode frequencies, the area and entropy spectra for the BTZ black hole in the presence of noncommutativity are calculated. In particular, the separations between the neighboring values of these spectra are determined and it is found that they are nonuniform. Therefore, it appears that the noncommutativity leads to a non-equispaced (discrete) area and entropy spectra.

Coulomb screening in graphene with topological defects

We analyze the screening of an external Coulomb charge in gapless graphene cone, which is taken as a prototype of a topological defect. In the subcritical regime, the induced charge is calculated using both the Green's function and the Friedel sum rule. The dependence of the polarization charge on the Coulomb strength obtained from the Green's function clearly shows the effect of the conical defect and indicates that the critical charge itself depends on the sample topology. Similar analysis using the Friedel sum rule indicates that the two results agree for low values of the Coulomb charge but differ for the higher strengths, especially in the presence of the conical defect. For a given subcritical charge, the transport cross-section has a higher value in the presence of the conical defect. In the supercritical regime we show that the coefficient of the power law tail of polarization charge density can be expressed as a summation of functions which vary log periodically with the distance from the Coulomb impurity. The period of variation depends on the conical defect. In the presence of the conical defect, the Fano resonances begin to appear in the transport cross-section for a lower value of the Coulomb charge. For both sub and supercritical regime we derive the dependence of LDOS on the conical defect. The effects of generalized boundary condition on the physical observables are also discussed.

Entropy from Scaling Symmetry Breaking

The scaling symmetry in conformal quantum mechanics (CQM) can be broken due to the boundary conditions that follow from the requirement of a unitary time evolution of the Hamiltonian. We show that the scaling symmetry of CQM can be restored by introducing a suitable mixed state, which is associated with a nonvanishing von Neumann entropy. We give an explicit formula for the entropy arising from the mixed state in CQM. Our work provides a direct link between the restoration of a broken symmetry and von Neumann entropy.

Effects of Noncommutativity on the Black Hole Entropy

In this paper the BTZ black hole geometry is probed with a noncommutative scalar field which obeys the $κ$-Minkowski algebra. The entropy of the BTZ black hole is calculated using the brick wall method. The contribution of the noncommutativity to the black hole entropy is explicitly evaluated up to the first order in the deformation parameter. We also argue that such a correction to the black hole entropy can be interpreted as arising from the renormalization of the Newton's constant due to the effects of the noncommutativity.

On the stability and magnetic properties of surface nanobubbles in water

A model for gas nanobubbles is proposed in which their remarkable stability is explained as due to the presence of a qualitatively different form of water covering the nanobubble surface layer which leads to a reduction of the diffusion coefficient by a factor of 10^9. It is shown that this new form of water is created by the interaction between the electrons of water molecules with the zero point vacuum electromagnetic field. The model gives an estimate for the life time of surface nanobubbles, explains why they are not influenced by surfactants and predicts that they should exhibit nonlinear paramagnetism.

Friedel sum rule in the presence of topological defects for graphene

The Friedel sum rule is extended to deal with topological defects for the case of a graphene cone in the presence of an external Coulomb charge. The dependence in the way the number of states change due to both the topological defect as well as the Coulomb charge are studied. Our analysis addresses both the cases of a subcritical as well as a supercritical value of the Coulomb charge. We also discuss the experimental implications of introducing a self-adjoint extension of the system Hamiltonian. We argue that the boundary conditions following from the self-adjoint extension encode the effect of short range interactions present in the system.

Anomalies and Renormalization of Impure States in Quantum Theories

In a Hamiltonian approach to anomalies parity and time reversal symmetries can be restored by introducing suitable impure (or mixed) states. However, the expectation values of observables such as the Hamiltonian diverges in such impure states. Here we show that such divergent expectation values can be treated within a renormalization group framework, leading to a set of $β$-functions in the moduli space of the operators representing the observables. This leads to well defined expectation values of the Hamiltonian in a phase where the impure state restores the $P$ and $T$ symmetry. We also show that this RG procedure leads to a mass gap in the spectrum. Such a framework may be relevant for long wavelength descriptions of condensed matter systems such as the quantum spin Hall effect.

Different realizations of kappa-momentum space and relative-locality effect

We consider different realizations for the momentum sector of kappa-Poincare Hopf algebra, which is associated with a curved momentum space. We show that the notion of the particle mass as introduced recently by Amelino-Camelia et al. in the context of relative-locality is realization independent for a wide class of realizations, up to linear order in deformation parameter l. On the other hand, the time delay formula clearly shows a dependence on the choice of realization.
