Evidence for baryon acoustic oscillations from galaxy-ellipticity correlations

The Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) feature in the clustering of galaxies or quasars provides a ``standard ruler" for distance measurements in cosmology. In this work, we report a $2\sim3σ$ signal of the BAO dip feature in the galaxy density-ellipticity (GI) cross-correlation functions using the spectroscopic sample of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) CMASS, combined with the deep DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys for precise galaxy shape measurements. We measure the GI correlation functions and model them using the linear alignment model. We constrain the distance $D_V/r_{\mathrm{d}}$ to redshift $0.57$ to a precision of $3\sim5\%$, depending on the details of modeling. The GI measurement reduces the uncertainty of distance measurement by $\sim10\%$ on top of that derived from the galaxy-galaxy (GG) correlation. More importantly, for future large and deep galaxy surveys, the independent GI measurements can help sort out the systematics in the BAO studies.

The baryon number fluctuation $κσ^2$ as a probe of nuclear matter phase transition at high baryon density

Two critical end points (CEPs) of the chiral phase transition and the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition show up at finite baryon chemical potential. The kurtosis $κσ^2$ of baryon number fluctuation on the $T-μ_B$ plane is positive on the first-order side and negative on the crossover side along the phase boundary. The freeze-out line extracted from the heavy ion collisions crosses between these two phase boundaries, one can observe a peak of $κσ^2$ around the collision energy $5 {\rm GeV}$ near the CEP of the chiral phase transition, and negative $κσ^2$ at low collision energies due to the CEP of the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition. This expalains the experimental measurement of $κσ^2$ at the collision energies of 2.4 GeV at HADES and 3 GeV and 7.7-200 GeV at STAR for most central collision. Thus we propose that the baryon number fluctuation $κσ^2$ can be used as a probe of nuclear matter phase structure at high baryon density.

The DESI One-Percent survey: constructing galaxy-halo connections for ELGs and LRGs using auto and cross correlations

In the current Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey, emission line galaxies (ELGs) and luminous red galaxies (LRGs) are essential for mapping the dark matter distribution at $z \sim 1$. We measure the auto and cross correlation functions of ELGs and LRGs at $0.8 0.1$ $\mathrm{Mpc}\,h^{-1}$. We can also reproduce the auto correlations of ELGs at $r_{\mathrm{p}}>0.3$ $\mathrm{Mpc}\,h^{-1}$ ($s>1$ $\mathrm{Mpc}\,h^{-1}$) in real (redshift) space. Although our model has only seven parameters, we show that it can be extended to higher redshifts and reproduces the observed auto correlations of ELGs in the whole range of $0.8<z<1.6$, which enables us to generate a lightcone ELG mock for DESI. With the above model, we further derive halo occupation distributions (HODs) for ELGs which can be used to produce ELG mocks in coarse simulations without resolving subhalos.

Gas-Kinetic Scheme for Partially Ionized Plasma in Hydrodynamic Regime

Most plasmas are only partially ionized. To better understand the dynamics of these plasmas, the behaviors of a mixture of neutral species and plasma in ideal magnetohydrodynamic states are investigated. The current approach is about the construction of coupled kinetic models for the neutral gas, electron, and proton, and the development of the corresponding gas-kinetic scheme (GKS) for the solution in the continuum flow regime. The scheme is validated in the 1D Riemann problem for an enlarged system with the interaction from the Euler waves of the neutral gas and magnetohydrodynamic ones of the plasma. Additionally, the Orszag-Tang vortex problem across different ionized states is tested to examine the influence of neutrals on the MHD wave evolution. These tests demonstrate that the proposed scheme can capture the fundamental features of ideal partially ionized plasma, and a transition in the wave structure from the ideal MHD solution of the fully ionized plasma to the Euler solution of the neutral gas is obtained.

High-order Compact Gas-kinetic Scheme for Two-layer Shallow Water Equations on Unstructured Mesh

For the two-layer shallow water equations, a high-order compact gas-kinetic scheme (GKS) on triangular mesh is proposed. The two-layer shallow water equations have complex source terms in comparison with the single layer equations. The main focus of this study is to construct a time-accurate evolution solution at a cell interface and to design a well-balanced scheme. The evolution model at a cell interface provides not only the numerical fluxes, but also the flow variables. The time-dependent flow variables at the closed cell interfaces can be used to update the cell-averaged gradients for the discretization of the the source terms inside each control volume in the development of the well-balanced scheme. Based on the cell-averaged flow variable and their gradients, high-order initial data reconstruction can be achieved with compact stencils. The compact high-order GKS has advantages to simulate the flow evolution in complex domain covered by unstructured mesh. Many test cases are used to validate the accuracy and robustness of the scheme for the two-layer shallow water equations.

Discourse-Aware Graph Networks for Textual Logical Reasoning

Textual logical reasoning, especially question-answering (QA) tasks with logical reasoning, requires awareness of particular logical structures. The passage-level logical relations represent entailment or contradiction between propositional units (e.g., a concluding sentence). However, such structures are unexplored as current QA systems focus on entity-based relations. In this work, we propose logic structural-constraint modeling to solve the logical reasoning QA and introduce discourse-aware graph networks (DAGNs). The networks first construct logic graphs leveraging in-line discourse connectives and generic logic theories, then learn logic representations by end-to-end evolving the logic relations with an edge-reasoning mechanism and updating the graph features. This pipeline is applied to a general encoder, whose fundamental features are joined with the high-level logic features for answer prediction. Experiments on three textual logical reasoning datasets demonstrate the reasonability of the logical structures built in DAGNs and the effectiveness of the learned logic features. Moreover, zero-shot transfer results show the features' generality to unseen logical texts.

Reconstructing dynamics of complex systems from noisy time series with hidden variables

Reconstructing the equation of motion and thus the network topology of a system from time series is a very important problem. Although many powerful methods have been developed, it remains a great challenge to deal with systems in high dimensions with partial knowledge of the states. In this paper, we propose a new framework based on a well-designed cost functional, the minimization of which transforms the determination of both the unknown parameters and the unknown state evolution into parameter learning. This method can be conveniently used to reconstruct structures and dynamics of complex networks, even in the presence of noisy disturbances or for intricate parameter dependence. As a demonstration, we successfully apply it to the reconstruction of different dynamics on complex networks such as coupled Lorenz oscillators, neuronal networks, phase oscillators and gene regulation, from only a partial measurement of the node behavior. The simplicity and efficiency of the new framework makes it a powerful alternative to recover system dynamics even in high dimensions, which expects diverse applications in real-world reconstruction.

Back to the Starting Point: on the Simulation of Initial Magnetic Fields and Spin Periods of Non-accretion Pulsars

Neutron stars (NSs) play essential roles in modern astrophysics. Magnetic fields and spin periods of newborn (zero age) NSs have large impact on the further evolution of NSs, which are however poorly explored in observation due to the difficulty of finding newborn NSs. In this work, we aim to infer the magnetic fields and spin periods (Bi and Pi) of zero-age NSs from the observed properties of NS population. We select non-accretion NSs (NANSs) whose evolution is solely determined by magnetic dipole radiation. We find that both Bi and Pi can be described by log-normal distribution and the fitting sensitively depends on our parameters.

UGKWP method for polydisperse gas-solid particle multiphase flow

In this paper, a unified algorithm will be proposed for the study of gas-solid particle multiphase flow. The gas-kinetic scheme (GKS) is used to simulate the continuum gas phase and the multiscale unified gas-kinetic wave-particle (UGKWP) method is developed for the multiple dispersed solid particle phase. At the same time, the momentum and energy exchanges between gas-particle phases will be included under the GKS-UGKWP framework. For each disperse solid particle phase, the decomposition of deterministic wave and statistic particle in UGKWP is based on the local cell's Knudsen number. This is very significant for simulating dispersed particle phases at different Knudsen numbers due to the variation of physical properties in individual particle phase, such as the particle diameter, material density, and the corresponding mass fraction inside each control volume. For the gas phase, the GKS is basically an Eulerian approach for the NS solution. Therefore, the GKS-UGKWP method for the gas-particle flow unifies the Eulerian-Eulerian (EE) and Eulerian-Lagrangian (EL) methods. An optimal strategy can be obtained for the solid particle phase with the consideration of physical accuracy and numerical efficiency. Two cases of gas-solid fluidization system, i.e., one circulating fluidized bed and one turbulent fluidized bed, are simulated. The typical flow structures of the fluidized particles are captured, and the time-averaged variables of the flow field agree well with the experimental measurements. In addition, the shock particle-bed interaction is studied by the proposed GKS-UGKWP, which validates the method for polydisperse gas-particle system in the supersonic case, where the dynamic evolution process of the particle cloud is investigated.

A study on the Poisson, geometric and Pascal distributions motivated by Chvátal's conjecture

Let $B(n,p)$ denote a binomial random variable with parameters $n$ and $p$. Vasěk Chvátal conjectured that for any fixed $n\geq 2$, as $m$ ranges over $\{0,\ldots,n\}$, the probability $q_m:=P(B(n,m/n)\leq m)$ is the smallest when $m$ is closest to $\frac{2n}{3}$. This conjecture has been solved recently. Motivated by this conjecture, in this paper, we consider the corresponding minimum value problem on the probability that a random variable is not more than its expectation, when its distribution is the Poisson distribution, the geometric distribution or the Pascal distribution.

Adaptive wave-particle decomposition in UGKWP method for high-speed flow simulations

With wave-particle decomposition, a unified gas-kinetic wave-particle (UGKWP) method has been developed for the multiscale flow simulations. The UGKWP method captures the transport process in all flow regimes without kinetic solver's constraint on the numerical mesh size and time step being less than the particle mean free path and collision time. In the current UGKWP method, the cell's Knudsen number, defined as the ratio of collision time to numerical time step, is used to distribute the components in the wave-particle decomposition. However, the adaptation of particle in UGKWP is mainly for the capturing of the non-equilibrium transport, and the cell's Knudsen number alone is not enough to identify the non-equilibrium state. For example, in the equilibrium flow regime with a Maxwellian distribution function, even at a large cell's Knudsen number, the flow evolution can be still modelled by the Navier-Stokes solver. Therefore, to further improve the efficiency, an adaptive UGKWP (AUGKWP) method will be developed with the introduction of an additional local flow variable gradient-dependent Knudsen number. As a result, the wave-particle decomposition in UGKWP will be determined by both cell's and gradient's Knudsen numbers, and the particle in UGKWP is solely used to capture the non-equilibrium flow transport. The AUGKWP becomes much more efficient than the previous one with the cell's Knudsen number only in the determination of wave-particle composition. Many numerical tests, including Sod tube, shock structure, flow around a cylinder, flow around a reentry capsule, and an unsteady nozzle plume flow, have been conducted to validate the accuracy and efficiency of AUGKWP. Compared with the original UGKWP, the AUGKWP achieves the same accuracy but has advantages in memory reduction and computational efficiency in the simulation for the flow with the co-existing of multiple regimes.

Photometric Objects Around Cosmic Webs (PAC) Delineated in a Spectroscopic Survey. IV. High Precision Constraints on the Evolution of Stellar-Halo Mass Relation at Redshift $z<0.7$

Taking advantage of the Photometric objects Around Cosmic webs (PAC) method developed in Paper I, we measure the excess surface density $\bar{n}_2w_{\rm{p}}$ of photometric objects around spectroscopic objects down to stellar mass $10^{8.0}M_{\odot}$, $10^{9.2}M_{\odot}$ and $10^{9.8}M_{\odot}$ in the redshift ranges of $z_s<0.2$, $0.2<z_s<0.4$ and $0.5<z_s<0.7$ respectively, using the data from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys and the spectroscopic samples of Slogan Digital Sky Survey (i.e. Main, LOWZ and CMASS samples). We model the measured $\bar{n}_2w_{\rm{p}}$ in N-body simulation using abundance matching method and constrain the stellar-halo mass relations (SHMR) in the three redshift ranges to percent level. With the accurate modeling, we demonstrate that the stellar mass scatter for given halo mass is nearly a constant, and that the empirical form of Behroozi et al describes the SHMR better than the double power law form at low mass. Our SHMR accurately captures the downsizing of massive galaxies since $z_s=0.7$, while it also indicates that small galaxies are still growing faster than their host halos. The galaxy stellar mass functions (GSMF) from our modeling are in perfect agreement with the {\it model-independent} measurements in Paper III, though the current work extends the GSMF to a much smaller stellar mass. Based on the GSMF and SHMR, we derive the stellar mass completeness and halo occupation distributions for the LOWZ and CMASS samples, which are useful for correctly interpreting their cosmological measurements such as galaxy-galaxy lensing and redshift space distortion.

Baryonic Effects on Lagrangian Clustering and Angular Momentum Reconstruction

Recent studies illustrate the correlation between the angular momenta of cosmic structures and their Lagrangian properties. However, only baryons are observable and it is unclear whether they reliably trace the cosmic angular momenta. We study the Lagrangian mass distribution, spin correlation, and predictability of dark matter, gas, and stellar components of galaxy-halo systems using IllustrisTNG, and show that the primordial segregations between components are typically small. Their protoshapes are also similar in terms of the statistics of moment of inertia tensors. Under the common gravitational potential they are expected to exert the same tidal torque and the strong spin correlations are not destroyed by the nonlinear evolution and complicated baryonic effects, as confirmed by the high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations. We further show that their late-time angular momenta traced by total gas, stars, or the central galaxies, can be reliably reconstructed by the initial perturbations. These results suggest that baryonic angular momenta can potentially be used in reconstructing the parameters and models related to the initial perturbations.

Semantic optical fiber communication system

The current optical communication systems minimize bit or symbol errors without considering the semantic meaning behind digital bits, thus transmitting a lot of unnecessary information. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a semantic optical fiber communication (SOFC) system. Instead of encoding information into bits for transmission, semantic information is extracted from the source using deep learning. The generated semantic symbols are then directly transmitted through an optical fiber. Compared with the bit-based structure, the SOFC system achieved higher information compression and a more stable performance, especially in the low received optical power regime, and enhanced the robustness against optical link impairments. This work introduces an intelligent optical communication system at the human analytical thinking level, which is a significant step toward a breakthrough in the current optical communication architecture.

PaletteNeRF: Palette-based Color Editing for NeRFs

Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) is a powerful tool to faithfully generate novel views for scenes with only sparse captured images. Despite its strong capability for representing 3D scenes and their appearance, its editing ability is very limited. In this paper, we propose a simple but effective extension of vanilla NeRF, named PaletteNeRF, to enable efficient color editing on NeRF-represented scenes. Motivated by recent palette-based image decomposition works, we approximate each pixel color as a sum of palette colors modulated by additive weights. Instead of predicting pixel colors as in vanilla NeRFs, our method predicts additive weights. The underlying NeRF backbone could also be replaced with more recent NeRF models such as KiloNeRF to achieve real-time editing. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves efficient, view-consistent, and artifact-free color editing on a wide range of NeRF-represented scenes.

Unified gas-kinetic wave-particle methods VII: diatomic gas with rotational and vibrational nonequilibrium

Hypersonic flow around a vehicle in near space flight is associated with multiscale non-equilibrium physics at a large variation of local Knudsen number from the leading edge highly compressible flow to the trailing edge particle free transport. To accurately capture the solution in all flow regimes from the continuum Navier-Stokes solution to the rarefied gas dynamics in a single computation requires genuinely multiscale method. The unified gas-kinetic wave-particle (UGKWP) method targets on the simulation of such a multicale transport. Due to the wave-particle decomposition, the dynamics in the Navier-Stokes wave and kinetic particle transport has been unified systematically and efficiently under the unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS) framework. In this study, the UGKWP method with the non-equilibrium among translation, rotation and vibration modes, is developed based on a multiple temperature relaxation model. The real gas effect for high speed flow in different flow regimes has been properly captured. Numerical tests, including Sod tube, normal shock structure, hypersonic flow around two-dimensional cylinder and three-dimensional flow around a sphere and space vehicle, have been conducted to validate the UGKWP method. In comparison with the discrete velocity method (DVM)-based Boltzmann solver and particle-based direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, the UGKWP method shows remarkable advantages in terms of computational efficiency, memory reduction, and automatic recovering of multiscale solution.

Multiple solutions of nonlinear coupled constitutive relation model and its rectification in non-equilibrium flow computation

In this study, the multiple solutions of Nonlinear Coupled Constitutive Relation (NCCR) model are firstly observed and a way for identifying the physical solution is proposed. The NCCR model proposed by Myong is constructed from the generalized hydrodynamic equations of Eu, and aims to describe rarefied flows. The NCCR model is a complicated nonlinear system. Many assumptions have been used in the schemes for solving the NCCR equations. The corresponding numerical methods may be associated with unphysical solution and instability. At the same time, it is hard to analyze the physical accuracy and stability of NCCR model due to the uncertainties in the numerical discretization. In this study, a new numerical method for solving NCCR equations is proposed and used to analyze the properties of NCCR equations. More specifically, the nonlinear equations are converted into the solutions of an objective function of a single variable. Under this formulation, the multiple solutions of the NCCR system are identified and the criteria for picking up the physical solution are proposed. Therefore, a numerical scheme for solving NCCR equations is constructed. A series of flow problems in the near continuum and low transition regimes with a large variation of Mach numbers are conducted to validate the numerical performance of proposed method and the physical accuracy of NCCR model.

Photometric Objects Around Cosmic Webs (PAC) Delineated in a Spectroscopic Survey. III. Accurate Measurement of Galaxy Stellar Mass Function with the Aid of Cosmological Redshift Surveys

We present a novel method to accurately measure the galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) based upon the Photometric objects Around Cosmic webs (PAC) method developed in our first paper (Paper I) of the series. The method allows us to measure the GSMF to a lower mass end that is not accessible to the spectroscopic sample used in the PAC. Compared with Paper I, the current measurement of GSMF is direct and model independent. We measure the GSMFs in the redshift ranges of $z_s<0.2$, $0.2 10^{10.6} M_{\odot}$, and that there is a clear up-turn at $M_*\approx 10^{9.5} M_{\odot}$ towards smaller galaxies in the local GMSF at $z_s=0.1$. We provide an accurate double Schechter fit to the local GSMF for the entire range of $M_*$ and a table of our measurements at the three redshifts, which can used to test theories of galaxy formation. Our method can achieve an accurate measurement of GSMF to the stellar mass limit where the spectroscopic sample is already highly incomplete (e.g. $\sim 10^{-3}$) for its target selection.
