Unified gas-kinetic scheme for reactive flow with multi-scale transport and chemical non-equilibrium

Reactive flows for rarefied gas mixtures involve a multi-scale transport characterized by particle collisions and free streaming, and non-equilibrium physics containing multi-species interactions, and chemical non-equilibrium. These flows are pivotal in aerospace engineering and semiconductor manufacturing, impacting spacecraft control and thermal protection in near-space flight, and plasma etching for chip processing. Therefore, the simulation of these multi-scale and non-equilibrium flow is of scientific and industrial significance. Following the methodology of direct modeling, the unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS) is constructed to describe the multi-scale transport of gas molecules across all flow regimes. This study extends the UGKS to the reactive flows with chemical non-equilibrium for the capture of more complex flow physics. Test cases, including shock structures, hypersonic flows around a two-dimensional cylinder and the three-dimensional re-entry and space vehicle, and nozzle plume flow into a vacuum, are used to validate the UGKS through the comparison with the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. The study shows that the methodology of direct modeling and the extended UGKS have great potential for simulating multi-scale flows with complex non-equilibrium physics.

RectifID: Personalizing Rectified Flow with Anchored Classifier Guidance

Customizing diffusion models to generate identity-preserving images from user-provided reference images is an intriguing new problem. The prevalent approaches typically require training on extensive domain-specific images to achieve identity preservation, which lacks flexibility across different use cases. To address this issue, we exploit classifier guidance, a training-free technique that steers diffusion models using an existing classifier, for personalized image generation. Our study shows that based on a recent rectified flow framework, the major limitation of vanilla classifier guidance in requiring a special classifier can be resolved with a simple fixed-point solution, allowing flexible personalization with off-the-shelf image discriminators. Moreover, its solving procedure proves to be stable when anchored to a reference flow trajectory, with a convergence guarantee. The derived method is implemented on rectified flow with different off-the-shelf image discriminators, delivering advantageous personalization results for human faces, live subjects, and certain objects. Code is available at https://github.com/feifeiobama/RectifID.

An efficiency and memory-saving programming paradigm for the unified gas-kinetic scheme

In recent years, non-equilibrium flows have gained significant attention in aerospace engineering and micro-electro-mechanical systems. The unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS) follows the methodology of direct modeling to couple particle collisions and free transport during gas evolution. However, like other discrete-velocity-based methods, the UGKS faces challenges related to high memory requirements and computational costs, such as the possible consumption of $1.32$ TB of memory when using $512$ cores for the simulations of the hypersonic flow around an X38-like space vehicle. This paper introduces a new UGKS programming paradigm for unstructured grids, focusing on reducing memory usage and improving parallel efficiency. By optimizing the computational sequence, the current method enables each cell in physical space to store only the distribution function for the discretized velocity space, eliminating the need to retain the entire velocity space for slopes and residuals. Additionally, the parallel communication is enhanced through the use of non-blocking MPI. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the new strategy in the programming effectively simulates non-equilibrium problems while achieving high computational efficiency and low memory consumption. For the hypersonic flow around an X38-like space vehicle, the simulation, which utilizes $1,058,685$ physical mesh cells and $4,548$ discrete velocity space mesh cells, requires only $168.12$ GB of memory when executed on $512$ CPU cores. This indicates that memory consumption in the UGKS is much reduced. This new programming paradigm can serve as a reference for discrete velocity methods for solving kinetic equations.

Probing Multimodal Large Language Models for Global and Local Semantic Representations

The advancement of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) has greatly accelerated the development of applications in understanding integrated texts and images. Recent works leverage image-caption datasets to train MLLMs, achieving state-of-the-art performance on image-to-text tasks. However, there are few studies exploring which layers of MLLMs make the most effort to the global image information, which plays vital roles in multimodal comprehension and generation. In this study, we find that the intermediate layers of models can encode more global semantic information, whose representation vectors perform better on visual-language entailment tasks, rather than the topmost layers. We further probe models regarding local semantic representations through object recognition tasks. We find that the topmost layers may excessively focus on local information, leading to a diminished ability to encode global information. Our code and data are released via https://github.com/kobayashikanna01/probing_MLLM_rep.

10 GHz Robust polarization modulation towards high-speed satellite-based quantum communication

In practical satellite-based quantum key distribution (QKD) systems, the preparation and transmission of polarization-encoding photons suffer from complex environmental effects and high channel-loss. Consequently, the hinge to enhancing the secure key rate (SKR) lies in achieving robust, low-error and high-speed polarization modulation. Although the schemes that realize self-compensation exhibit remarkable robustness. Their modulation speed is constrained to approximately 2 GHz to avoid the interaction between the electrical signal and the reverse optical pulses. Here we utilize the non-reciprocity of the lithium niobate modulators and eliminate the modulation on the reverse optical pulses. As this characteristic is widely available in the radio-frequency band, the modulation speed is no longer limited by the self-compensating optics and can be further increased. The measured average intrinsic QBER of the different polarization states at 10 GHz system repetition frequency is as low as 0.53% over 10 min without any compensation. And the experiment simulation shows that the proposed scheme extends the transmission distance to more than 350 km. Our work can be be efficient performed to the high-speed and high-loss satellite-based quantum communication scenario.

On the Formation of the Double Neutron Star Binary PSR J1846-0513

The double neutron star PSR J1846-0513 is discovered by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) in Commensal Radio Astronomy FAST Survey. The pulsar is revealed to be harbored in an eccentric orbit with $e=0.208$ and orbital period of 0.613 days. The total mass of the system is constrained to be $2.6287(35)\rm{M}_{\odot}$, with a mass upper limit of $1.3455{\rm~M}_{\odot}$ for the pulsar and a mass lower limit of $1.2845{\rm~M}_{\odot}$ for the companion star. To reproduce its evolution history, we perform a 1D model for the formation of PSR J1846-0513 whose progenitor is assumed to be neutron star - helium (He) star system via MESA code. Since the large eccentricity is widely believed to originate from an asymmetric supernova explosion, we also investigate the dynamical effects of the supernova explosion. Our simulated results show that the progenitor of PSR J1846-0513 could be a binary system consisting of a He star of $3.3-4.0{\rm~M}_\odot$ and a neutron star in a circular orbit with an initial period of $\sim0.5$ days.

Integration of Communication and Computational Imaging

Communication enables the expansion of human visual perception beyond the limitations of time and distance, while computational imaging overcomes the constraints of depth and breadth. Although impressive achievements have been witnessed with the two types of technologies, the occlusive information flow between the two domains is a bottleneck hindering their ulterior progression. Herein, we propose a novel framework that integrates communication and computational imaging (ICCI) to break through the inherent isolation between communication and computational imaging for remote perception. By jointly considering the sensing and transmitting of remote visual information, the ICCI framework performs a full-link information transfer optimization, aiming to minimize information loss from the generation of the information source to the execution of the final vision tasks. We conduct numerical analysis and experiments to demonstrate the ICCI framework by integrating communication systems and snapshot compressive imaging systems. Compared with straightforward combination schemes, which sequentially execute sensing and transmitting, the ICCI scheme shows greater robustness against channel noise and impairments while achieving higher data compression. Moreover, an 80 km 27-band hyperspectral video perception with a rate of 30 fps is experimentally achieved. This new ICCI remote perception paradigm offers a highefficiency solution for various real-time computer vision tasks.

Spin Alignment of Vector Mesons Induced by Local Spin Density Fluctuations

We propose a novel mechanism that the spin alignment of vector meson $ϕ$ and $K^{*0}$ in most central heavy ion collisions is induced by intrinsic QCD dynamics without external vortical/ magnetic fields. The local spin density fluctuation of quarks due to the axial-vector and tensor interactions between quarks can induce the spin alignments of vector meson. It is found that axial-vector interaction results in $ρ_{00}<1/3$ for the spin alignment of $ϕ$ meson, while tensor interaction results in $ρ_{00}>1/3$. We argue that the spin alignment of $K^{*0}$ due to the spin density fluctuation from flavor-mixing would be a signature or hint of instanton.

Instability in supernova fallback disks and its effect on the formation of ultra long period pulsars

Several pulsars with unusually long periods were discovered recently, comprising a potential population of ultra long period pulsars (ULPPs). The origin of their long periodicity is not well understood, but may be related to magnatars spun down by surrounding fallback disks. While there are few systematic investigations on the fallback disk-assisted evolution of magnetars, the instability in the disk has received little attention, which determines the lifetime of the disk. In this work we simulate the evolution of the magnetic field, spin period, and magnetic inclination angle of magnetars with a supernova fallback disk. We find that thermal viscous instability in the disk could significantly affect the formation of ULPPs. Our simulation results also reveal that a large fraction of ULPPs seem to be nearly aligned and orthogonal rotators. This might help place ULPPs above the death line in the pulse period - period derivative plane. However, some extra mechanisms seem to be required to account for radio emission of ULPPs.

An Adaptive Reconstruction Method for Arbitrary High-Order Accuracy Using Discontinuity Feedback

This paper introduces an effcient class of adaptive stencil extension reconstruction methods based on a discontinuity feedback factor, addressing the challenges of weak robustness and high computational cost in high-order schemes, particularly those of 7th-order or above. Two key innovations are presented: The accuracy order adaptively increases from the lowest level based on local stencil smoothness, contrasting with conventional methods like Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) and Monotonic Upstream-Centered Scheme for Conservation Laws (MUSCL)limiters, which typically reduce order from the highest level. The Discontinuity Feedback Factor (DF) serves a dual purpose: detecting sub-cell discontinuity strength and explicitly incorporating into the reconstruction process as a local smoothness measure. This approach eliminates the need for computationally expensive smoothness indicators often required in very high-order schemes, such as 9th-order schemes, and can be easily generalized to arbitrary high-order schemes. Rigorous test cases, including a Mach 20000 jet, demonstrate the exceptional robustness of this approach.

Atmospheric Pressure Ammonia Synthesis on AuRu Catalysts Enabled by Plasmon-Controlled Hydrogenation and Nitrogen-species Desorption

Ammonia is a key component of fertilizer and a potential clean fuel and hydrogen carrier. The Haber-Bosch process for ammonia synthesis consumes more than half of industrial hydrogen and contributes up to ~3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Light-driven reactions via surface plasmon resonances offer a less energy-intensive pathway for ammonia production by altering reaction intermediates. Here, we report gold-ruthenium plasmonic bimetallic alloys for ammonia synthesis at room temperature and pressure, driven by visible light. We use colloidal synthesis to create AuRu$_x$ alloys (x=0.1, 0.2, 0.3) and disperse these nanoparticles on MgO supports for gas-phase ammonia synthesis. We observe a ~60 $μ$mol/g/h reactivity and ~0.12% external quantum efficiency on a AuRu$_0$$_.$$_2$ sample under 100 mW/cm$^2$ visible light. In-situ diffuse reflective infrared Fourier transform spectroscopic measurements show that hydrogenation of nitrogen adsorbates is accelerated under light compared to thermocatalysis. Combining wavelength-dependent reactivity and spectroscopic findings with semi-classical electromagnetic modeling, we show plasmonic bimetallic alloys expedite ammonia synthesis by aiding hydrogenation of adsorbed nitrogen species via plasmon-mediated hot electrons. Quantum mechanical calculations reveal hydrogen-assisted N$_2$ splitting in the excited state is key to activating the reaction under ambient conditions. Therefore, light or H$_2$ alone cannot dissociate N$_2$ -- the key bottleneck to breaking N$_2$'s triple bond. Our findings are consistent with recent hypotheses on how nitrogenase enzymes catalyze ammonia production at mild conditions and provide insights for sustainable photochemical transformations.

Accurate Measurement of the Lensing Magnification by BOSS CMASS Galaxies and Its Implications for Cosmology and Dark Matter

Magnification serves as an independent and complementary gravitational lensing measurement to shear. We develop a novel method to achieve an accurate and robust magnification measurement around BOSS CMASS galaxies across physical scales of $0.016h^{-1}{\rm Mpc} < r_{\rm p} < 10h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$. We first measure the excess total flux density $δM$ of the source galaxies in deep DECaLS photometric catalog that are lensed by CMASS galaxies. We convert $δM$ to magnification $μ$ by establishing the $δμ-δM$ relation using a deeper photometric sample. By comparing magnification measurements in three optical bands ($grz$), we constrain the dust attenuation curve and its radial distribution, discovering a steep attenuation curve in the circumgalactic medium of CMASS galaxies. We further compare dust-corrected magnification measurements to model predictions from high-resolution dark matter-only (DMO) simulations in WMAP and Planck cosmologies, as well as the hydrodynamic simulation \texttt{TNG300-1}, using precise galaxy-halo connections from the Photometric objects Around Cosmic webs method and the accurate ray-tracing algorithm \texttt{P3MLens}. For $r_{\rm p} > 70h^{-1}$ kpc, our magnification measurements are in good agreement with both WMAP and Planck cosmologies, resulting in an estimation of the matter fluctuation amplitude of $S_8=0.816\pm0.024$. However, at $r_{\rm p} < 70h^{-1}$ kpc, we observe an excess magnification signal, which is higher than the DMO model in Planck cosmology at $2.8σ$ and would be exacerbated if significant baryon feedback is included. Implications of the potential small scale discrepancy for the nature of dark matter and for the processes governing galaxy formation are discussed.

Atmospheric Turbulence-Immune Free Space Optical Communication System based on Discrete-Time Analog Transmission

To effectively mitigate the influence of atmospheric turbulence, a novel discrete-time analog transmission free-space optical (DTAT-FSO) communication scheme is proposed. It directly maps information sources to discrete-time analog symbols via joint source-channel coding and modulation. Differently from traditional digital free space optical (TD-FSO) schemes, the proposed DTAT-FSO approach can automatically adapt to the variation of the channel state, with no need to adjust the specific modulation and coding scheme. The performance of the DTAT-FSO system was evaluated in both intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) and coherent FSO systems for high-resolution image transmission. The results show that the DTAT-FSO reliably transmits images at low received optical powers (ROPs) and automatically enhances quality at high ROPs, while the TD-FSO experiences cliff and leveling effects when the channel state varies. With respect to the TD-FSO scheme, the DTAT-FSO scheme improved receiver sensitivity by 2.5 dB in the IM/DD FSO system and 0.8 dB in the coherent FSO system, and it achieved superior image fidelity under the same ROP. The automatic adaptation feature and improved performance of the DTAT-FSO suggest its potential for terrestrial, airborne, and satellite optical networks, addressing challenges posed by atmospheric turbulence.

Magnetic catalysis and diamagnetism from pion fluctuations

In the framework of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model beyond mean field approximation, the effects of pion fluctuations on (inverse) magnetic catalysis and magnetic susceptibility are studied. The negative magnetic susceptibility at low temperature is observed when contributions from both neutral and charged pions are taken into account. In weak field approximation, it is observed that at finite temperature, the magnetic inhibition effect in the chiral limit, resulting from the difference between the transverse and longitudinal velocities of neutral pions, converts to weak magnetic catalysis when considering a non-zero current quark mass. Moreover, the magnetic catalysis is amplified by the charged pions.

Kinetic representation of the unified gas-kinetic wave-particle method and beyond

The unified gas-kinetic wave-particle (UGKWP) method is a hybrid method for multiscale flow simulations, in which the contributions to the whole gas evolution from deterministic hydrodynamic wave and stochastic particle transport are combined simultaneously. Originally, the UGKWP method was developed as a direct modeling approach at discrete level. In this work, we revisit the time evolution of each part of the involved simulation particles and wave molecules in UGKWP, and present the corresponding kinetic equations. The resultant kinetic system can be viewed as a collision decomposition of the original kinetic equation, which can serve as a basis for developing other kinetic methods for flows in all flow regimes.

Robust characterization of photonic integrated circuits

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) offer ultra-broad optical bandwidths that enable unprecedented data throughputs for signal processing applications. Dynamic reconfigurability enables compensation of fabrication flaws and fluctuating external environments, tuning for adaptive equalization and training of optical neural networks. The initial step in PIC reconfiguration entails measuring its dynamic performance, often described by its frequency response. While measuring the amplitude response is straightforward, e.g. using a tunable laser and optical power meter, measuring the phase response presents challenges due to various factors, including phase variations in test connections and instrumentation limitations. To address these challenges, a universal and robust characterization technique is proposed, which uses an on-chip reference path coupled to the signal processing core (SPC), with a delay larger or smaller than the total delay across the signal processing paths. A Fourier transform of the chip's power response reveals the SPC's impulse response. The method is more robust against low reference-path power and imprecise delays. Experiments using a finite-impulse-response (FIR) structure demonstrate rapid SPC training, overcoming thermal crosstalk and device imperfections. This approach offers a promising solution for PIC characterization, facilitating expedited physical parameter training for advanced applications in communications and optical neural networks.

An implicit adaptive unified gas-kinetic scheme for steady-state solutions of non-equilibrium flows

Nonequilibrium flows have been frequently encountered in various aerospace engineering applications. To understand nonequilibrium physics, multiscale effects, and the dynamics in these applications, an effective and reliable multiscale scheme for all flow regimes is required. Following the direct modeling methodology, the adaptive unified gas-kinetic scheme employs discrete velocity space (DVS) to accurately capture the non-equilibrium physics, recovering the original unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS), and adaptively employs continuous distribution functions based on the Chapman-Enskog expansion to achieve better efficiency. Different regions are dynamically coupled at the cell interface through the fluxes from the discrete and continuous gas distribution functions, thereby avoiding any buffer zone between them. In the current study, an implicit adaptive unified gas-kinetic scheme (IAUGKS) is constructed to further enhance the efficiency of steady-state solutions. The current scheme employs implicit macroscopic governing equations and couples them with implicit microscopic governing equations within the non-equilibrium region, resulting in high convergence efficiency in all flow regimes. A series of numerical tests were conducted for high Mach number flows around diverse geometries such as a cylinder, a sphere, an X-38-like vehicle, and a space station. The current scheme can capture the non-equilibrium physics and provide accurate predictions of surface quantities. In comparison with the original UGKS, the velocity space adaptation, unstructured DVS, and implicit iteration significantly improve the efficiency by one or two orders of magnitude. Given its exceptional efficiency and accuracy, the IAUGKS serves as an effective tool for nonequilibrium flow simulations.

A Memory Reduction Compact Gas Kinetic Scheme on 3D Unstructured Meshes

This paper introduces a memory-reduction third-order compact gas-kinetic scheme (CGKS) for solving compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations on 3D unstructured meshes. The scheme utilizes a time-evolution gas distribution function to provide a time-evolution solution at cell interfaces, enabling the implementation of Hermite WENO techniques for high-order reconstruction. However, the HWENO method needs to store a coefficients matrix for the quadratic polynomial to achieve third-order accuracy, resulting in high memory usage. A novel reconstruction method, built upon HWENO reconstruction, has been designed to enhance computational efficiency and reduce memory usage compared to the original CGKS. The simple idea is that the first-order and second-order terms of the quadratic polynomials are determined in a two-step way. In the first step, the second-order terms are obtained from the reconstruction of a linear polynomial of the first-order derivatives by only using the cell-averaged slopes, since the second-order derivatives are nothing but the "derivatives of derivatives". Subsequently, the first-order terms left can be determined by the linear reconstruction only using cell-averaged values. Thus, we successfully split one quadratic least-square regression into several linear least-square regressions, which are commonly used in a second-order finite volume code. Since only a small matrix inversion is needed in a 3-D linear least-square regression, the computational cost for the new reconstruction is dramatically reduced and the storage of the reconstruction-coefficient matrix is no longer necessary. The proposed new reconstruction technique can reduce the overall computational cost by about 20 to 30 percent. The challenging large-scale unsteady numerical simulation is performed, which demonstrates that the current improvement brings the CGKS to a new level for industrial applications.
