Many-body eigenstate thermalization from one-body quantum chaos: emergent arrow of time

A profound quest of statistical mechanics is the origin of irreversibility - the arrow of time. New stimulants have been provided, thanks to unprecedented degree of control reached in experiments with isolated quantum systems and rapid theoretical developments of manybody localization in disordered interacting systems. The proposal of (many-body) eigenstate thermalization (ET) for these systems reinforces the common belief that either interaction or extrinsic randomness is required for thermalization. Here, we unveil a quantum thermalization mechanism challenging this belief. We find that, provided one-body quantum chaos is present, as a pure many-body state evolves the arrow of time can emerge, even without interaction or randomness. In times much larger than the Ehrenfest time that signals the breakdown of quantum-classical correspondence, quantum chaotic motion leads to thermal [Fermi-Dirac (FD) or Bose-Einstein (BE)] distributions and thermodynamics in individual eigenstates. Our findings lay dynamical foundation of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics of isolated quantum systems.

Discovering and Visualizing Hierarchy in Multivariate Data

How to extract useful insights from data is always a challenge, especially if the data is multidimensional. Often, the data can be organized according to certain hierarchical structure that are stemmed either from data collection process or from the information and phenomena carried by the data itself. The current study attempts to discover and visualize these underlying hierarchies. By regarding each observation in the data as a draw from a (hypothetical) multidimensional joint density, our first goal is to approximate this unknown density with a piecewise constant function via binary partition, our non-parametric approach makes no assumptions on the form of the density. Given the piecewise constant density function and its corresponding binary partition, our second goal is to construct a connected graph and build up a tree representation of the data by level sets. To demonstrate that our method is a general data mining and visualization tool which can provide "multi-resolution" summaries and reveal different levels of information of the data, we apply it to two real data sets from Flow Cytometry and Social Network.

Acoustic Wave Absorption as a Probe of Dynamical Geometrical Response of Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids

We show that acoustic crystalline wave gives rise to an effect similar to that of a gravitational wave to an electron gas. Applying this idea to a two-dimensional electron gas in the fractional quantum Hall regime, this allows for experimental study of its dynamical gravitational response. To study such response we generalize Haldane's geometrical description of fractional quantum Hall states to situations where the external metric is time-dependent. We show that such time-dependent metric (generated by acoustic or effective gravitational wave) couples to collective modes of the system, including a quadrapolar mode similar to graviton at long wave length, and magneto-roton at finite wave length. Energies of these modes can be revealed in spectroscopic measurements. We argue that such gravitational probe provides a potentially highly useful alternative probe of quantum Hall liquids, in addition to the usual electromagnetic response.

Simple one-pass algorithm for penalized linear regression with cross-validation on MapReduce

In this paper, we propose a one-pass algorithm on MapReduce for penalized linear regression \[f_λ(α, β) = \|Y - α\mathbf{1} - Xβ\|_2^2 + p_λ(β)\] where $α$ is the intercept which can be omitted depending on application; $β$ is the coefficients and $p_λ$ is the penalized function with penalizing parameter $λ$. $f_λ(α, β)$ includes interesting classes such as Lasso, Ridge regression and Elastic-net. Compared to latest iterative distributed algorithms requiring multiple MapReduce jobs, our algorithm achieves huge performance improvement; moreover, our algorithm is exact compared to the approximate algorithms such as parallel stochastic gradient decent. Moreover, what our algorithm distinguishes with others is that it trains the model with cross validation to choose optimal $λ$ instead of user specified one. Key words: penalized linear regression, lasso, elastic-net, ridge, MapReduce

Probing Critical Surfaces in Momentum Space Using Real-Space Entanglement Entropy: Bose versus Fermi

A co-dimension one critical surface in the momentum space can be either a familiar Fermi surface, which separates occupied states from empty ones in the non-interacting fermion case, or a novel Bose surface, where gapless bosonic excitations are anchored. Their presence gives rise to logarithmic violation of entanglement entropy area law. When they are convex, we show that the shape of these critical surfaces can be determined by inspecting the leading logarithmic term of real space entanglement entropy. The fundamental difference between a Fermi surface and a Bose surface is revealed by the fact that the logarithmic terms in entanglement entropies differ by a factor of two: $S^{Bose}_{log} = 2 S^{Fermi}_{log}$, even when they have identical geometry. Our method has remarkable similarity with determining Fermi surface shape using quantum oscillation. We also discuss possible probes of concave critical surfaces in momentum space.

Chiral spin liquid from magnetic Wannier states

We present a mapping of a two-dimensional system of interacting bosons in a strong perpendicular magnetic field to an equivalent system of interacting bosons on the square lattice in the absence of the field. The mapping utilizes a magnetic Bloch and the corresponding magnetic Wannier single-particle basis in the lowest Landau level. By construction, the ground states of the resulting model of interacting bosons on the square lattice are gapped fractionalized liquids or gapless Bose metal states with broken time reversal symmetry at specific rational filling fractions.

Transport evidence for the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal phase in ZrTe5

Topological Dirac semimetal is a newly discovered class of materials and has attracted intense attentions. This material can be viewed as a three-dimensional (3D) analogue of graphene and has linear energy dispersion in bulk, leading to a range of exotic transport properties. Here we report direct quantum transport evidence of 3D Dirac semimetal phase of layered material ZrTe5 by angular dependent magnetoresistance measurements under high magnetic fields up to 31 Tesla. We observed very clear negative longitudinal magnetoresistance induced by chiral anomaly under the condition of the magnetic field aligned only along the current direction. Pronounced Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) quantum oscillations in both longitudinal magnetoresistance and transverse Hall resistance were observed, revealing anisotropic light cyclotron masses and high mobility of the system. In particular, a nontrivial π-Berry phase in the SdH gives clear evidence for 3D Dirac semimetal phase. Furthermore, we observed clear Landau Level splitting under high magnetic field, suggesting possible splitting of Dirac point into Weyl points due to broken time reversal symmetry. Our results indicate that ZrTe5 is an ideal platform to study 3D massless Dirac and Weyl fermions in a layered compound.

Quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg half-odd integer spin model as the entanglement Hamiltonian of the integer spin Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki states

Applying a symmetric bulk bipartition to one-dimensional Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki valence bond solid (VBS) states for the integer spin-S Haldane gapped phase, we can create an array of fractionalized spin-S/2 edge states with the super unit cell $l$ in the reduced bulk system, and the topological properties encoded in the VBS wave functions can be revealed. The entanglement Hamiltonian (EH) with $l=even$ corresponds to the quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-S/2 model. For the even integer spins, the EH still describes the Haldane gapped phase. For the odd integer spins, however, the EH just corresponds to the quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg half-odd integer spin model with spinon excitations, characterizing the critical point separating the topological Haldane phase from the trivial gapped phase. Our results thus demonstrate that the topological bulk property not only determines its fractionalized edge states, but also the quantum criticality associated with the topological phase, where the elementary excitations are precisely those fractionalized edge degrees of freedom confined in the bulk of the topological phase.

Joint Energy Minimization and Resource Allocation in C-RAN with Mobile Cloud

Cloud radio access network (C-RAN) has emerged as a potential candidate of the next generation access network technology to address the increasing mobile traffic, while mobile cloud computing (MCC) offers a prospective solution to the resource-limited mobile user in executing computation intensive tasks. Taking full advantages of above two cloud-based techniques, C-RAN with MCC are presented in this paper to enhance both performance and energy efficiencies. In particular, this paper studies the joint energy minimization and resource allocation in C-RAN with MCC under the time constraints of the given tasks. We first review the energy and time model of the computation and communication. Then, we formulate the joint energy minimization into a non-convex optimization with the constraints of task executing time, transmitting power, computation capacity and fronthaul data rates. This non-convex optimization is then reformulated into an equivalent convex problem based on weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE). The iterative algorithm is finally given to deal with the joint resource allocation in C-RAN with mobile cloud. Simulation results confirm that the proposed energy minimization and resource allocation solution can improve the system performance and save energy.

Entanglement spectrum and entangled modes of highly excited states in random XX spin chains

We examine the real space renormalization group method of finding \textit{excited eigenstate} (RSRG-X) of the XX spin-1/2 chain, from entanglement perspectives. Eigenmodes of entanglement Hamiltonian, especially the maximally entangled mode and corresponding entanglement energies are studied and compared with predictions of RSRG-X. Our numerical results demonstrate the accuracy of the RSRG-X method in the strong disorder limit, and quantify its error when applied to weak disorder regime. Overall, our results validate the RSRG-X method qualitatively, but also show that its accuracy decreases with increasing temperature.

LAPPS: Location Aware Password Protection System

Location Aware Password Protection System (LAPPS) is designed to strengthen the security of traditional password protection systems. This is achieved by adding several layers of protection to the passwords that most traditional password protection systems generate. The current implementation looks at the Password/Pin numbers of Credit/Debit cards that are used on Automated Teller Machine (ATM),though the underlying design of the system can be used in many other scenarios. A password that is generated will be allocated to a particular user and to the ATM that is nearest to the user. LAPPS ensures the following qualities of the passwords that it generates. Location Awareness: The passwords are generated according to the users' geographical area, that they request their passwords from. So a password will only be active in just one location. Time Awareness: A password will only be valid for five minutes. The unused passwords will be discarded. Dynamic: The user has to have a new password each time he/she logs in. A password is generated to be used only once. User Oriented/Specific: The received password can only be used by the requester, and can only be used on its allocated ATM. Two Factor Authenticity: The confidential information will be secured using two-factor authentication. For extra security, a Pin generating device has been introduced. This will produce an eight digit number that the user has to supply to the mobile application, before requesting for a password. The user can obtain a pin number by inserting his/her Debit/Credit card and the fixed password that has been allocated when the user registers with the system.

Aqua Computing: Coupling Computing and Communications

The authors introduce a new vision for providing computing services for connected devices. It is based on the key concept that future computing resources will be coupled with communication resources, for enhancing user experience of the connected users, and also for optimising resources in the providers' infrastructures. Such coupling is achieved by Joint/Cooperative resource allocation algorithms, by integrating computing and communication services and by integrating hardware in networks. Such type of computing, by which computing services are not delivered independently but dependent of networking services, is named Aqua Computing. The authors see Aqua Computing as a novel approach for delivering computing resources to end devices, where computing power of the devices are enhanced automatically once they are connected to an Aqua Computing enabled network. The process of resource coupling is named computation dissolving. Then, an Aqua Computing architecture is proposed for mobile edge networks, in which computing and wireless networking resources are allocated jointly or cooperatively by a Mobile Cloud Controller, for the benefit of the end-users and/or for the benefit of the service providers. Finally, a working prototype of the system is shown and the gathered results show the performance of the Aqua Computing prototype.

Density Estimation via Discrepancy

Given i.i.d samples from some unknown continuous density on hyper-rectangle $[0, 1]^d$, we attempt to learn a piecewise constant function that approximates this underlying density non-parametrically. Our density estimate is defined on a binary split of $[0, 1]^d$ and built up sequentially according to discrepancy criteria; the key ingredient is to control the discrepancy adaptively in each sub-rectangle to achieve overall bound. We prove that the estimate, even though simple as it appears, preserves most of the estimation power. By exploiting its structure, it can be directly applied to some important pattern recognition tasks such as mode seeking and density landscape exploration. We demonstrate its applicability through simulations and examples.

Striped quantum Hall state in a half-filled Landau level

Nature of the fractional quantum Hall state at Landau level filling factor 5/2 remains elusive despite intensive experimental and theoretical work. While the leading theoretical candidates are Moore-Read Pfaffian (Pf) and its particle-hole conjugate anti-Pfaffian (APf), neither received unambiguous experimental support. We show that a state that is intermediate between them, made of alternating stripes of Pf and APf in the bulk, is a viable candidate. Such a state is shown to be incompressible and thus a charge insulator in the bulk, but a heat conductor due to the presence of gapless neutral bulk modes. We argue that properties of such a state is consistent with existing numerical and experimental work, and discuss possible experimental probes of its presence.

Improving Reliability Performance of Diffusion-based Molecular Communication With Adaptive Threshold Variation Algorithm

In this work, we investigate the communication reliability for diffusion-based molecular communication, using the indicator of bit error rate (BER). A molecular classified model is established to divide molecules into three parts, which are the signal, inter-symbol interference (ISI) and noise. We expand each part separately using molecular absorbing probability, and connect them by a traditional-like formula. Based on the classified model, we do a theoretical analysis to prove the feasibility of improving the BER performance. Accordingly, an adaptive threshold variation (ATV) algorithm is designed in demodulation to implement the goal, which makes the receiver adapt the channel condition properly through learning process. Moreover, the complexity of ATV is calculated and its performance in various noisy channel is discussed. An expression of Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) is defined to verify the system performance. We test some important parameters of the channel model, as well as the ATV algorithm in the simulation section. The results have shown the performance gain of the proposal.

A Diffusion-Neuron Hybrid System for Molecular Communication

Diffusion-based and neural communication are two interesting domains in molecular communication. Both of them have distinct advantages and are exploited separately in many works. However, in some cases, neural and diffusion-based ways have to work together for a communication. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a hybrid communication system, in which the diffusion-based and neural communication channels are contained. Multiple connection nano-devices (CND) are used to connect the two channels. We define the practice function of the CNDs and develop the mechanism of exchanging information from diffusion-based to neural channel, based on the biological characteristics of the both channels. In addition, we establish a brief mathematical model to present the complete communication process of the hybrid system. The information exchange process at the CNDs is shown in the simulation. The bit error rate (BER) indicator is used to verify the reliability of communication. The result reveals that based on the biological channels, optimizing some parameters of nano-devices could improve the reliability performance.

Relaxation of a Goldstino-like mode due to supersymmetry breaking in Bose-Fermi mixtures

In the presence of nonrelativistic supersymmetry, a sharp fermionic collective mode similar to the Goldstino mode in high-energy physics was proposed to be realized in Bose-Fermi mixtures. The Goldstino mode is relaxed (a.k.a. decays) if supersymmetry is explicitly broken, which can be revealed as the broadening of the corresponding spectral function. We find that the situation shares many similarities with the electron spin resonance in magnetic systems and adopt the well-known Kubo-Tomita theory to perform a general analysis of the spectral function lineshape broadening of the Goldstino mode.

Entanglement Area Law in Disordered Free Fermion Anderson Model in One, Two, and Three Dimensions

We calculate numerically the entanglement entropy of free fermion ground states in one-, two- and three-dimensional Anderson models, and find that it obeys the area law as long as the linear size of the subsystem is sufficiently larger than the mean free path. This result holds in the metallic phase of the three-dimensional Anderson model, where the mean free path is finite although the localization length is infinite. Relation between the present results and earlier ones on area law violation in special one-dimensional models that support metallic phases is discussed.
