Debiased Contrastive Learning of Unsupervised Sentence Representations

Recently, contrastive learning has been shown to be effective in improving pre-trained language models (PLM) to derive high-quality sentence representations. It aims to pull close positive examples to enhance the alignment while push apart irrelevant negatives for the uniformity of the whole representation space. However, previous works mostly adopt in-batch negatives or sample from training data at random. Such a way may cause the sampling bias that improper negatives (e.g. false negatives and anisotropy representations) are used to learn sentence representations, which will hurt the uniformity of the representation space. To address it, we present a new framework \textbf{DCLR} (\underline{D}ebiased \underline{C}ontrastive \underline{L}earning of unsupervised sentence \underline{R}epresentations) to alleviate the influence of these improper negatives. In DCLR, we design an instance weighting method to punish false negatives and generate noise-based negatives to guarantee the uniformity of the representation space. Experiments on seven semantic textual similarity tasks show that our approach is more effective than competitive baselines. Our code and data are publicly available at the link: \textcolor{blue}{\url{https://github.com/RUCAIBox/DCLR}}.

Efficient Reflectance Capture with a Deep Gated Mixture-of-Experts

We present a novel framework to efficiently acquire near-planar anisotropic reflectance in a pixel-independent fashion, using a deep gated mixtureof-experts. While existing work employs a unified network to handle all possible input, our network automatically learns to condition on the input for enhanced reconstruction. We train a gating module to select one out of a number of specialized decoders for reflectance reconstruction, based on photometric measurements, essentially trading generality for quality. A common, pre-trained latent transform module is also appended to each decoder, to offset the burden of the increased number of decoders. In addition, the illumination conditions during acquisition can be jointly optimized. The effectiveness of our framework is validated on a wide variety of challenging samples using a near-field lightstage. Compared with the state-of-the-art technique, our results are improved at the same input bandwidth, and our bandwidth can be reduced to about 1/3 for equal-quality results.

Exploring Motion Ambiguity and Alignment for High-Quality Video Frame Interpolation

For video frame interpolation (VFI), existing deep-learning-based approaches strongly rely on the ground-truth (GT) intermediate frames, which sometimes ignore the non-unique nature of motion judging from the given adjacent frames. As a result, these methods tend to produce averaged solutions that are not clear enough. To alleviate this issue, we propose to relax the requirement of reconstructing an intermediate frame as close to the GT as possible. Towards this end, we develop a texture consistency loss (TCL) upon the assumption that the interpolated content should maintain similar structures with their counterparts in the given frames. Predictions satisfying this constraint are encouraged, though they may differ from the pre-defined GT. Without the bells and whistles, our plug-and-play TCL is capable of improving the performance of existing VFI frameworks. On the other hand, previous methods usually adopt the cost volume or correlation map to achieve more accurate image/feature warping. However, the O(N^2) ({N refers to the pixel count}) computational complexity makes it infeasible for high-resolution cases. In this work, we design a simple, efficient (O(N)) yet powerful cross-scale pyramid alignment (CSPA) module, where multi-scale information is highly exploited. Extensive experiments justify the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

DiFT: Differentiable Differential Feature Transform for Multi-View Stereo

We present a novel framework to automatically learn to transform the differential cues from a stack of images densely captured with a rotational motion into spatially discriminative and view-invariant per-pixel features at each view. These low-level features can be directly fed to any existing multi-view stereo technique for enhanced 3D reconstruction. The lighting condition during acquisition can also be jointly optimized in a differentiable fashion. We sample from a dozen of pre-scanned objects with a wide variety of geometry and reflectance to synthesize a large amount of high-quality training data. The effectiveness of our features is demonstrated on a number of challenging objects acquired with a lightstage, comparing favorably with state-of-the-art techniques. Finally, we explore additional applications of geometric detail visualization and computational stylization of complex appearance.

Filter-enhanced MLP is All You Need for Sequential Recommendation

Recently, deep neural networks such as RNN, CNN and Transformer have been applied in the task of sequential recommendation, which aims to capture the dynamic preference characteristics from logged user behavior data for accurate recommendation. However, in online platforms, logged user behavior data is inevitable to contain noise, and deep recommendation models are easy to overfit on these logged data. To tackle this problem, we borrow the idea of filtering algorithms from signal processing that attenuates the noise in the frequency domain. In our empirical experiments, we find that filtering algorithms can substantially improve representative sequential recommendation models, and integrating simple filtering algorithms (eg Band-Stop Filter) with an all-MLP architecture can even outperform competitive Transformer-based models. Motivated by it, we propose \textbf{FMLP-Rec}, an all-MLP model with learnable filters for sequential recommendation task. The all-MLP architecture endows our model with lower time complexity, and the learnable filters can adaptively attenuate the noise information in the frequency domain. Extensive experiments conducted on eight real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method over competitive RNN, CNN, GNN and Transformer-based methods. Our code and data are publicly available at the link: \textcolor{blue}{\url{https://github.com/RUCAIBox/FMLP-Rec}}.

Pose Guided Image Generation from Misaligned Sources via Residual Flow Based Correction

Generating new images with desired properties (e.g. new view/poses) from source images has been enthusiastically pursued recently, due to its wide range of potential applications. One way to ensure high-quality generation is to use multiple sources with complementary information such as different views of the same object. However, as source images are often misaligned due to the large disparities among the camera settings, strong assumptions have been made in the past with respect to the camera(s) or/and the object in interest, limiting the application of such techniques. Therefore, we propose a new general approach which models multiple types of variations among sources, such as view angles, poses, facial expressions, in a unified framework, so that it can be employed on datasets of vastly different nature. We verify our approach on a variety of data including humans bodies, faces, city scenes and 3D objects. Both the qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate the better performance of our method than the state of the art.

Strong Edge Stress in Molecularly Thin Organic$-$Inorganic Hybrid Ruddlesden$-$Popper Perovskites and Modulations of Their Edge Electronic Properties

Organic$-$inorganic hybrid Ruddlesden$-$Popper perovskites (HRPPs) have gained much attention for optoelectronic applications due to their high moisture resistance, good processibility under ambient conditions, and long functional lifetimes. Recent success in isolating molecularly thin hybrid perovskite nanosheets and their intriguing edge phenomena have raised the need for understanding the role of edges and the properties that dictate their fundamental behaviours. In this work, we perform a prototypical study on the edge effects in ultrathin hybrid perovskites by considering monolayer (BA)$_2$PbI$_4$ as a representative system. Based on first-principles simulations of nanoribbon models, we show that in addition to significant distortions of the octahedra network at the edges, strong edge stresses are also present in the material. Structural instabilities that arise from the edge stress could drive the relaxation process and dominate the morphological response of edges in practice. A clear downward shift of the bands at the narrower ribbons, as indicative of the edge effect, facilitates the separation of photo-excited carriers (electrons move towards the edge and holes move towards the interior part of the nanosheet). Moreover, the desorption energy of the organic molecule can also be much lower at the free edges, making it easier for functionalization and/or substitution events to take place. The findings reported in this work elucidate the underlying mechanisms responsible for edge states in HRPPs and will be important in guiding the rational design and development of high-performance layer$-$edge devices.

Learning Implicit Body Representations from Double Diffusion Based Neural Radiance Fields

In this paper, we present a novel double diffusion based neural radiance field, dubbed DD-NeRF, to reconstruct human body geometry and render the human body appearance in novel views from a sparse set of images. We first propose a double diffusion mechanism to achieve expressive representations of input images by fully exploiting human body priors and image appearance details at two levels. At the coarse level, we first model the coarse human body poses and shapes via an unclothed 3D deformable vertex model as guidance. At the fine level, we present a multi-view sampling network to capture subtle geometric deformations and image detailed appearances, such as clothing and hair, from multiple input views. Considering the sparsity of the two level features, we diffuse them into feature volumes in the canonical space to construct neural radiance fields. Then, we present a signed distance function (SDF) regression network to construct body surfaces from the diffused features. Thanks to our double diffused representations, our method can even synthesize novel views of unseen subjects. Experiments on various datasets demonstrate that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art in both geometric reconstruction and novel view synthesis.

Emotional Voice Conversion: Theory, Databases and ESD

In this paper, we first provide a review of the state-of-the-art emotional voice conversion research, and the existing emotional speech databases. We then motivate the development of a novel emotional speech database (ESD) that addresses the increasing research need. With this paper, the ESD database is now made available to the research community. The ESD database consists of 350 parallel utterances spoken by 10 native English and 10 native Chinese speakers and covers 5 emotion categories (neutral, happy, angry, sad and surprise). More than 29 hours of speech data were recorded in a controlled acoustic environment. The database is suitable for multi-speaker and cross-lingual emotional voice conversion studies. As case studies, we implement several state-of-the-art emotional voice conversion systems on the ESD database. This paper provides a reference study on ESD in conjunction with its release.

Best-Buddy GANs for Highly Detailed Image Super-Resolution

We consider the single image super-resolution (SISR) problem, where a high-resolution (HR) image is generated based on a low-resolution (LR) input. Recently, generative adversarial networks (GANs) become popular to hallucinate details. Most methods along this line rely on a predefined single-LR-single-HR mapping, which is not flexible enough for the SISR task. Also, GAN-generated fake details may often undermine the realism of the whole image. We address these issues by proposing best-buddy GANs (Beby-GAN) for rich-detail SISR. Relaxing the immutable one-to-one constraint, we allow the estimated patches to dynamically seek the best supervision during training, which is beneficial to producing more reasonable details. Besides, we propose a region-aware adversarial learning strategy that directs our model to focus on generating details for textured areas adaptively. Extensive experiments justify the effectiveness of our method. An ultra-high-resolution 4K dataset is also constructed to facilitate future super-resolution research.

Revisiting Temporal Alignment for Video Restoration

Long-range temporal alignment is critical yet challenging for video restoration tasks. Recently, some works attempt to divide the long-range alignment into several sub-alignments and handle them progressively. Although this operation is helpful in modeling distant correspondences, error accumulation is inevitable due to the propagation mechanism. In this work, we present a novel, generic iterative alignment module which employs a gradual refinement scheme for sub-alignments, yielding more accurate motion compensation. To further enhance the alignment accuracy and temporal consistency, we develop a non-parametric re-weighting method, where the importance of each neighboring frame is adaptively evaluated in a spatial-wise way for aggregation. By virtue of the proposed strategies, our model achieves state-of-the-art performance on multiple benchmarks across a range of video restoration tasks including video super-resolution, denoising and deblurring. Expressive Voice Conversion: A Joint Framework for Speaker Identity and Emotional Style Transfer

Traditional voice conversion(VC) has been focused on speaker identity conversion for speech with a neutral expression. We note that emotional expression plays an essential role in daily communication, and the emotional style of speech can be speaker-dependent. In this paper, we study the technique to jointly convert the speaker identity and speaker-dependent emotional style, that is called expressive voice conversion. We propose a StarGAN-based framework to learn a many-to-many mapping across different speakers, that takes into account speaker-dependent emotional style without the need for parallel data. To achieve this, we condition the generator on emotional style encoding derived from a pre-trained speech emotion recognition(SER) model. The experiments validate the effectiveness of our proposed framework in both objective and subjective evaluations. To our best knowledge, this is the first study on expressive voice conversion.

Virtual Data Augmentation: A Robust and General Framework for Fine-tuning Pre-trained Models

Recent works have shown that powerful pre-trained language models (PLM) can be fooled by small perturbations or intentional attacks. To solve this issue, various data augmentation techniques are proposed to improve the robustness of PLMs. However, it is still challenging to augment semantically relevant examples with sufficient diversity. In this work, we present Virtual Data Augmentation (VDA), a general framework for robustly fine-tuning PLMs. Based on the original token embeddings, we construct a multinomial mixture for augmenting virtual data embeddings, where a masked language model guarantees the semantic relevance and the Gaussian noise provides the augmentation diversity. Furthermore, a regularized training strategy is proposed to balance the two aspects. Extensive experiments on six datasets show that our approach is able to improve the robustness of PLMs and alleviate the performance degradation under adversarial attacks. Our codes and data are publicly available at \textcolor{blue}{\url{https://github.com/RUCAIBox/VDA}}.

Unsupervised Image Generation with Infinite Generative Adversarial Networks

Image generation has been heavily investigated in computer vision, where one core research challenge is to generate images from arbitrarily complex distributions with little supervision. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) as an implicit approach have achieved great successes in this direction and therefore been employed widely. However, GANs are known to suffer from issues such as mode collapse, non-structured latent space, being unable to compute likelihoods, etc. In this paper, we propose a new unsupervised non-parametric method named mixture of infinite conditional GANs or MIC-GANs, to tackle several GAN issues together, aiming for image generation with parsimonious prior knowledge. Through comprehensive evaluations across different datasets, we show that MIC-GANs are effective in structuring the latent space and avoiding mode collapse, and outperform state-of-the-art methods. MICGANs are adaptive, versatile, and robust. They offer a promising solution to several well-known GAN issues. Code available: github.com/yinghdb/MICGANs.

GCN-Denoiser: Mesh Denoising with Graph Convolutional Networks

In this paper, we present GCN-Denoiser, a novel feature-preserving mesh denoising method based on graph convolutional networks (GCNs). Unlike previous learning-based mesh denoising methods that exploit hand-crafted or voxel-based representations for feature learning, our method explores the structure of a triangular mesh itself and introduces a graph representation followed by graph convolution operations in the dual space of triangles. We show such a graph representation naturally captures the geometry features while being lightweight for both training and inference. To facilitate effective feature learning, our network exploits both static and dynamic edge convolutions, which allow us to learn information from both the explicit mesh structure and potential implicit relations among unconnected neighbors. To better approximate an unknown noise function, we introduce a cascaded optimization paradigm to progressively regress the noise-free facet normals with multiple GCNs. GCN-Denoiser achieves the new state-of-the-art results in multiple noise datasets, including CAD models often containing sharp features and raw scan models with real noise captured from different devices. We also create a new dataset called PrintData containing 20 real scans with their corresponding ground-truth meshes for the research community. Our code and data are available in https://github.com/Jhonve/GCN-Denoiser.

Quasitriangular structures on abelian extensions of $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$

The aim of this paper is to give all quasitriangular structures on a class of semisimple Hopf algebras constructed through abelian extensions of $\Bbbk\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ by $\Bbbk^G$ for an abelian group $G$. We first introduce the concept of symmetry of quasitriangular structures of Hopf algebras and obtain some related propositions which can be used to simplify our calculations of quasitriangular structures. Secondly, we find that quasitriangular structures of these semisimple Hopf algebras can do division-like operations. Using such operations we transform the problem of solving the quasitriangular structures into solving general solutions and giving a special solution. Then we give all general solutions and get a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a special solution.

BASAR:Black-box Attack on Skeletal Action Recognition

Skeletal motion plays a vital role in human activity recognition as either an independent data source or a complement. The robustness of skeleton-based activity recognizers has been questioned recently, which shows that they are vulnerable to adversarial attacks when the full-knowledge of the recognizer is accessible to the attacker. However, this white-box requirement is overly restrictive in most scenarios and the attack is not truly threatening. In this paper, we show that such threats do exist under black-box settings too. To this end, we propose the first black-box adversarial attack method BASAR. Through BASAR, we show that adversarial attack is not only truly a threat but also can be extremely deceitful, because on-manifold adversarial samples are rather common in skeletal motions, in contrast to the common belief that adversarial samples only exist off-manifold. Through exhaustive evaluation and comparison, we show that BASAR can deliver successful attacks across models, data, and attack modes. Through harsh perceptual studies, we show that it achieves effective yet imperceptible attacks. By analyzing the attack on different activity recognizers, BASAR helps identify the potential causes of their vulnerability and provides insights on what classifiers are likely to be more robust against attack. Code is available at https://github.com/realcrane/BASAR-Black-box-Attack-on-Skeletal-Action-Recognition.
