Visualization of spin-orbit entangled 4f electrons in crystalline materials

Lanthanide 4f electrons are strongly influenced by spin-orbit coupling, resulting in well-defined J multiplets, which are further split by the crystalline electric field in condensed matter. While the anisotropy of 4f electrons is closely linked to material properties, direct experimental observation of the 4f electron distribution in real space remains a significant challenge. Here, we present an approach for visualizing the anisotropic distribution of lanthanide 4f electrons in pyrochlore oxides by combining high-photon-energy X-ray diffraction and valence electron density (VED) analysis based on the core differential Fourier synthesis (CDFS) method. The observed VED distributions around the lanthanide site reveal the parameters of the ground-state wavefunction, which roughly agree with point-charge calculations for the trigonal crystal electric field under the LS coupling scheme. This CDFS-based VED observation method not only provides insights into the anisotropic nature of 4f electrons but also opens a pathway for studying the 4f states in a wide range of crystalline materials.

Real-Space Observation of Ligand Hole State in Cubic Perovskite SrFeO$_3$

An anomalously high valence state sometimes shows up in transition-metal oxide compounds. In such systems, holes tend to occupy mainly the ligand $p$ orbitals, giving rise to interesting physical properties such as superconductivity in cuprates and rich magnetic phases in ferrates. However, no one has ever observed the distribution of ligand holes in real space. Here, we report a successful observation of the spatial distribution of valence electrons in cubic perovskite SrFeO$_3$ by high-energy X-ray diffraction experiments and precise electron density analysis using a core differential Fourier synthesis method. A real-space picture of ligand holes formed by the orbital hybridization of Fe 3$d$ and O 2$p$ is revealed. The anomalous valence state in Fe is attributed to the considerable contribution of the ligand hole, which is related to the metallic nature and the absence of Jahn-Teller distortions in this system.

First-Order Structural Change Accompanied by Yb Valence Transition in YbInCu4

A diffraction experiment using a high energy x-ray was carried out on YbInCu4. Below the Yb valence transition temperature, the splitting of Bragg peaks was detected in higher-order reflections. No superlattice reflections accompanying the valence ordering were found below the transition temperature. These experimental findings indicate that a structural change from a cubic structure to a tetragonal structure without valence ordering occurs at the transition temperature. Such a structural change free from any valence ordering is difficult to understand only in terms of Yb valence degrees of freedom. This means that the structural change may be related to electronic symmetries such as quadrupolar degrees of freedom as well as the change in Yb valence.

Switching of Conducting Planes by Partial Dimer Formation in IrTe$_2$

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction was employed to study the structural-electronic phase transition of IrTe$_2$ at approximately 270 K. The low-temperature structure was found to be a triclinic (space group $P\bar{1}$) characterized by the partial formation of Ir$_2$ dimers in the triangular lattice of IrTe$_2$, resulting in a structural modulation with a wave vector of ${\bf q} = (1/5, 0, -1/5)$. First-principles band calculations demonstrate that tilted two-dimensional Fermi surfaces emerge in the triclinic phase, suggesting that switching of the conducting planes occurs from the basal plane of the trigonal IrTe$_2$ to the tilted plane normal to ${\bf q}$ of the triclinic IrTe$_2$.

Non-complicated EuTiO3 Structure

A recently published paper [arXiv:1206.5417 ]showed strong incommensurate diffraction peaks in EuTiO3 around zone boundary R-points. We wish to convey that in our samples, and, it seems, at least another case from the literature, these peaks are absent.

Phonon Softening and Dispersion in EuTiO3

We measured phonon dispersion in single crystal EuTiO$_3$ using inelastic x-ray scattering. A structural transition to an antiferrodistortive phase was found at a critical temperature $T_0$=287$\pm$1 K using powder and single-crystal x-ray diffraction. Clear softening of the zone boundary \emph{R}-point \textbf{q}=(0.5 0.5 0.5) acoustic phonon shows this to be a displacive transition. The mode energy plotted against reduced temperature could be seen to nearly overlap that of $\rm SrTiO_3$, suggesting a universal scaling relation. Phonon dispersion was measured along $Γ$-$X$ (0 0 0)$\rightarrow$(0.5 0 0). Mode eigenvectors were obtained from a shell model consistent with the \textbf{q}-dependence of intensity and energy, which also showed that the dispersion is nominally the same as in $\rm SrTiO_3$ at room temperature, but corrected for mass. The lowest energy optical mode, determined to be of Slater character, softens approximately linearly with temperature until the 70-100 K range where the softening stops, and at low temperature, the mode disperses linearly near the zone center.

Resonant X-Ray Diffraction Study of Strongly Spin-Orbit-Coupled Mott Insulator CaIrO3

We performed resonant x-ray diffraction experiments at the $L$ absorption edges for the post-perovskite-type compound CaIrO$_{3}$ with $(t_{2g})^5$ electronic configuration. By observing the magnetic signals, we could clearly see that the magnetic structure was a striped order with an antiferromagnetic moment along the c-axis and that the wavefunction of a $t_{2g}$ hole is strongly spin-orbit entangled, the $J_{\rm eff} =1/2$ state. The observed spin arrangement is consistent with theoretical work predicting a unique superexchange interaction in the $J_{\rm eff} =1/2$ state and points to the universal importance of the spin-orbit coupling in Ir oxides, irrespective of the local coordination and lattice topology. We also propose that the non-magnetic resonant scattering is a powerful tool for unraveling an orbital state even in a metallic iridate.

Epitaxially stabilized iridium spinel oxide without cations in the tetrahedral site

Single-crystalline thin film of an iridium dioxide polymorph Ir2O4 has been fabricated by the pulsed laser deposition of LixIr2O4 precursor and the subsequent Li-deintercalation using soft chemistry. Ir2O4 crystallizes in a spinel (AB2O4) without A cations in the tetrahedral site, which is isostructural to lambda-MnO2. Ir ions form a pyrochlore sublattice, which is known to give rise to a strong geometrical frustration. This Ir spinel was found to be a narrow gap insulator, in remarkable contrast to the metallic ground state of rutile-type IrO2. We argue that an interplay of strong spin-orbit coupling and a Coulomb repulsion gives rise to an insulating ground state as in a layered perovskite Sr2IrO4.
