Method for Constructing Artificial Intelligence Player with Abstraction to Markov Decision Processes in Multiplayer Game of Mahjong

We propose a method for constructing artificial intelligence (AI) of mahjong, which is a multiplayer imperfect information game. Since the size of the game tree is huge, constructing an expert-level AI player of mahjong is challenging. We define multiple Markov decision processes (MDPs) as abstractions of mahjong to construct effective search trees. We also introduce two methods of inferring state values of the original mahjong using these MDPs. We evaluated the effectiveness of our method using gameplays vis-à-vis the current strongest AI player.

Rhodopsin Photoisomerization: Coherent vs. Incoherent Excitation

A uniform minimal model of rhodopsin photoisomerization induced by either coherent laser light or low level incoherent light (e.g. moonlight) is provided. Realistic timescales for both processes, which differ by ten orders of magnitude, are obtained. Further, a kinetic scheme involving rates for both coherent and incoherent light excitation is introduced, placing all timescales into a uniform framework.

Mechanisms in Adaptive Feedback Control: Photoisomerization in a Liquid

The underlying mechanism for Adaptive Feedback Control in the experimental photoisomerization of NK88 in methanol is exposed theoretically. With given laboratory limitations on laser output, the complicated electric fields are shown to achieve their targets in qualitatively simple ways. Further, control over the cis population without laser limitations reveals an incoherent pump-dump scenario as the optimal isomerization strategy. In neither case are there substantial contributions from quantum multiple-path interference or from nuclear wavepacket coherence. Environmentally induced decoherence is shown to justify the use of a simplified theoretical model.
