The Cobb-Douglas production function revisited

Charles Cobb and Paul Douglas in 1928 used data from the US manufacturing sector for 1899-1922 to introduce what is known today as the Cobb-Douglas production function that has been widely used in economic theory for decades. We employ the R programming language to fit the formulas for the parameters of the Cobb-Douglas production function generated by the authors recently via the bi-Hamiltonian approach to the same data set utilized by Cobb and Douglas. We conclude that the formulas for the output elasticities and total factor productivity are compatible with the original 1928 data.

Revealing Energy Dependence of Quantum Defects via Two Heteronuclear Atoms in an Optical Tweezer

As a physically motivated and computationally simple model for cold atomic and molecular collisions, the multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT) with frame transformation (FT) formalism provides an analytical treatment of scattering resonances in an arbitrary partial wave between alkali-metal atoms, leading to the experimental observation of $p-$ and $d-$wave resonances. However, the inconsistency of quantum defects for describing scattering resonances shows up when compared with experiments. Here, with two heteronuclear atoms in the ground state of an optical tweezer, the energy dependence of quantum defects is obviously revealed by comparing the measured s-wave scattering length with the prediction of MQDT-FT. By dividing the quantum defects into energy sensitive and insensitive categories, the inconsistency is ultimately removed while retaining the analytic structure of MQDT-FT. This study represents a significant improvement in the analytical MQDT-FT and demonstrates that a clean two-particle system is valuable to the test of collisional physics.

Balanced Coherence Times of Mixed-Species Atomic Qubits in a Dual $3\times3$ Magic-Intensity Optical Dipole Trap Array

In this work, we construct a polarization-mediated magic-intensity (MI) optical dipole trap (ODT) array, in which the detrimental effects of light shifts on the mixed-species qubits are efficiently mitigated so that the coherence times of the mixed-species qubits are both substantially enhanced and balanced for the first time. This mixed-species magic trapping technique relies on the tunability of the coefficient of the third-order cross term and ground state hyperpolarizability, which are inherently dependent on the degree of circular polarization of the trap laser. Experimentally, polarization of the ODT array for $^{85}$Rb qubits is finely adjusted to a definite value so that its working magnetic field required for magic trapping amounts to the one required for magically trapping $^{87}$Rb qubits in another ODT array with fully circular polarization. Ultimately, in such a polarization-mediated MI-ODT array, the coherence times of $^{87}$Rb and $^{85}$Rb qubits are respectively enhanced up to 891$\pm$47 ms and 943$\pm$35 ms. Furthermore, a new source of dephasing effect is revealed, which arises from the noise of the elliptic polarization, and the reduction in corresponding dephasing effect on the $^{85}$Rb qubits is attainable by use of shallow magic intensity. It is anticipated that the novel mixed-species MI-ODT array is a versatile platform for building scalable quantum computers with neutral atoms.

In search of a new economic model determined by logistic growth

In this paper we extend the work by Ryuzo Sato devoted to the development of economic growth models within the framework of the Lie group theory. We propose a new growth model based on the assumption of logistic growth in factors. It is employed to derive new production functions and introduce a new notion of wage share. In the process it is shown that the new functions compare reasonably well against relevant economic data. The corresponding problem of maximization of profit under conditions of perfect competition is solved with the aid of one of these functions. In addition, it is explained in reasonably rigorous mathematical terms why Bowley's law no longer holds true in post-1960 data.

High Fidelity Single-qubit Gates of a Single Neutral Atom in the Magic-Intensity Optical Dipole Trap

We demonstrate high fidelity single-qubit gate operation in a trapped single neutral atom. The atom is trapped in the recently invented magic-intensity optical dipole trap (MI-ODT) with more stable magnetic field. The MI-ODT efficiently mitigates the detrimental effects of light shifts thus sufficiently improves the performance of single qubit-gates. The gates are driven with microwave, and the fidelity of gate operation is characterized by using the randomized benchmarking method. We obtain an average error per Clifford gate of $3.0(7)\times10^{-5}$ which is much below the error threshold ($10^{-4}$) for fault-tolerance. This error is found to be dominated by qubit dephasing, and the corresponding coherence time relevant to the Clifford gates is also measured experimentally. This work is an essential step toward the construction of a scalable quantum computer with neutral atoms trapped in an MI-ODT array.

Coherence preservation of a single neutral atom qubit transferred between magic-intensity optical traps

We demonstrate that the coherence of a single mobile atomic qubit can be well preserved during a transfer process among different optical dipole traps (ODTs). This is a prerequisite step in realizing a large-scale neutral atom quantum information processing platform. A qubit encoded in the hyperfine manifold of $^{87}$Rb atom is dynamically extracted from the static quantum register by an auxiliary moving ODT and reinserted into the static ODT. Previous experiments were limited by decoherences induced by the differential light shifts of qubit states. Here we apply a magic-intensity trapping technique which mitigates the detrimental effects of light shifts and substantially enhances the coherence time to $225 \pm 21\,\mathrm{ms}$. The experimentally demonstrated magic trapping technique relies on the previously neglected hyperpolarizability contribution to the light shifts, which makes the light shift dependence on the trapping laser intensity to be parabolic. Because of the parabolic dependence, at a certain "magic" intensity, the first order sensitivity to trapping light intensity variations over ODT volume is eliminated. We experimentally demonstrate the utility of this approach and measure hyperpolarizability for the first time. Our results pave the way for constructing a scalable quantum-computing architectures with single atoms trapped in an array of magic ODTs.

Interaction induced decay of a heteronuclear two-atom system

Two-atom systems in small traps are of fundamental interest, first of all for understanding the role of interactions in degenerate cold gases and for the creation of quantum gates in quantum information processing with single-atom traps. One of the key quantities is the inelastic relaxation (decay) time when one of the atoms or both are in a higher hyperfine state. Here we measure this quantity in a heteronuclear system of $^{87}$Rb and $^{85}$Rb in a micro optical trap and demonstrate experimentally and theoretically the presence of both fast and slow relaxation processes, depending on the choice of the initial hyperfine states. The developed experimental method allows us to single out a particular relaxation process and, in this sense, our experiment is a "superclean platform" for collisional physics studies. Our results have also implications for engineering of quantum states via controlled collisions and creation of two-qubit quantum gates.

Growth, characterization, and magnetic properties of a Li(Mn,Ni)PO4 single crystal

Ni-doped LiMn0.95Ni0.05PO4 single crystals have been grown for the first time by the travelling-solvent floating-zone method at low Argon pressure. The grown sample exhibits large single crystalline grains as revealed by means of polarization microscopy and X-ray Laue back scattering. The composition of the crystal was determined by Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. LiMn0.95Ni0.05PO4 orders in an orthorhombic olivine-like structure as expected and phase purity was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. An oriented cuboid with size of 2.4 x 2.5 x 2.7 mm3 along a, b, and c crystalline directions, respectively, was used for anisotropic magnetic measurements.

Multidimensional continued fraction and rational approximation

The classical continued fraction is generalized for studying the rational approximation problem on multi-formal Laurent series in this paper, the construction is called m-continued fraction. It is proved that the approximants of an m-continued fraction converge to a multi-formal Laurent series, and are best rational approximations to it; conversely for any multi-formal Laurent series an algorithm called m-CF transform is introduced to obtain its m-continued fraction expansions; moreover, strict m-continued fractions, which are m-continued fractions imposed with some additional conditions, and multi-formal Laurent series are in 1-1 correspondence. It is shown that m-continued fractions can be used to study the multi-sequence synthesis problem.

Bounds of ideal class numbers of real quadratic function fields

The theory of continued fractions of functions $ \sqrt D $ is used to give lower bound for class numbers $h(D)$ of general real quadratic function fields $K=k(\sqrt D)$ over $k={\bf F}_q(T)$. For five series of real quadratic function fields $K$, the bounds of $h(D)$ are given more explicitly, e.g., if $ D=F^2+c,$ \mbox{}\hspace{0.1cm} then $ h(D)\geq {deg}F /{deg} P;$ \hspace{0.1cm} if $D=(SG)^2+cS, $ then $ h(D)\geq {deg}S / {deg} P; $ if $D=(A^m+a)^2+A, $ then $ h(D)\geq {deg}A / {deg} P, $ where $P$ is irreducible polynomial splitting in $K, c\in {\bf F}_q$ is any constant. In addition, six types of quadratic function fields are found to have ideal class numbers bounded and bigger than one. {\bf keywords:} quadratic function field, ideal class number, continued fractions of functions
