Confinement and the vortex vacuum of SU(2) lattice gauge theory

The vortex theory which emerges from SU(2) lattice gauge theory by center projection is briefly reviewed. In this vortex picture, quark confinement is due to percolating (closed) vortices which are randomly linked to the Wilson loop. The deconfinement phase transition appears as a de-percolation phase transition.

Induced symmetry breaking and a new phase of hadronic matter at high density

The notion induced symmetry breaking (ISB) is introduced as a generalization of the spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism and is illustrated in a simple two flavor spin model. In the case of QCD at finite baryon density, I argue that the quark interaction induced by zero sound satisfies the prerequisites which are necessary for a ISB scenario. In this scenario, the quark condensate sharply drops at the critical value of the chemical potential in coincidence with a rapid increase of the baryon density. The spectrum of the light particles is discussed below and above this phase transition. The consequences of the ISB mechanism for heavy ion collisions are briefly addressed.

Confinement and scaling of the vortex vacuum of SU(2) lattice gauge theory

The magnetic vortices which arise in SU(2) lattice gauge theory in center projection are visualized for a given time slice. We establish that the number of vortices piercing a given 2-dimensional sheet is a renormalization group invariant and therefore physical quantity. We find that roughly 2 vortices pierce an area of 1 fm^2.

On the possibility of the dual Meissner effect induced by instantons

The classical Yang-Mills equation of motion is numerically investigated in the Lorentz gauge for a SU(2) gauge group. The color-electric field of two point-like charges is studied in the ''empty'' vacuum and in a state with an instanton present. The major effect for a fixed orientation of the instanton is that the color-electric field lines are expelled or attracted from the instanton region depending on the orientation of the instanton. If over the orientations of the instanton is averaged, this effect drops out. In this case of a random instanton orientation, we find that the external color-electric field is expelled from the instanton core. The origin of this effect is discussed.

A New State Of Hadronic Matter At High Density

We propose in this article that if the chemical potential exceeds a critical value in dense hadronic medium, a first-order phase transition to a new state of matter with Lorentz symmetry spontaneously broken (in addition to the explicit breaking) takes place. As a consequence, light vector mesons get excited as ``almost'' Goldstone bosons. Since the light vector mesons dominantly couple to photons, the presence of these new vector mesons could lead to an enhancement in the dilepton production from dense medium at an invariant mass lower than the free-space vector-meson mass. We provide a low-energy quark model which demonstrates that the above scenario is a generic case for quark theories with a strong interaction in the vector channel. We discuss possible relevance of this phase to the phenomenon of the enhanced dilepton production at low invariant masses in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Improving the signal-to-noise-ratio in lattice gauge theories

Renormalization of composite fields is employed to suppress the statistical noise in lattice gauge calculations. We propose a new action which differs from the standard Wilson action by ''irrelevant'' operators, but suppresses the fluctuations of the plaquette. We numerically study the Creutz ratios and find a scaling window. The SU(2) mass gap is estimated. We prove that the contributions of the ''irrelevant'' operators to the screening mass decrease towards the continuum limit. The results obtained from the action with noise suppression are compared with those of the standard Wilson action.

Quark Confinement due to Random Interactions

On the level of an effective quark theory, we define confinement by the absence of quark anti-quark thresholds in correlation functions. We then propose a confining Nambu-Jona-Lasinio-type model. Its four fermion interaction in the color channel is mediated by a random color matrix. We investigate the model's phase structure as well as its behavior under extreme conditions, i.e. high temperature and/or high density. In order to study the interplay of the proposed mechanism of confinement and asymptotic freedom, we consider an extended Gross-Neveu model. Quark anti-quark thresholds are proven to be absent in the scalar correlation function implying that the decay of the scalar meson into free quarks is avoided. The transition from the low energy to the high energy perturbative regime is found to be smooth. Perturbation theory provides a good description of Green's functions at high energies, although there is no quark liberation.

A renormalizable extension of the NJL-model

The Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model is supplemented by the quark interaction generated by the one-gluon exchange. The employed gluon propagator exhibits the correct large momentum behavior of QCD, whereas the Landau-pole at low energies is screened. The emerging constituent quark model is one-loop renormalizable and interpolates between the phenomenologically successful Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at low energies and perturbative QCD at high momenta. Consequently, the momentum dependence of the quark self-energy at high energy coincides with the prediction from perturbative QCD. The chiral phase transition is studied in dependence on the low energy four quark interaction strength in the Dyson-Schwinger equation approach. The critical exponents of the quark self-energy and the quark condensate are obtained. The latter exponent deviates from the NJL-result. Pion properties are addressed by means of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. The validity of the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation is verified. Finally, we study the conditions which are necessary to allow for an accurate estimate of observables by the NJL-model as well as the shortcoming of the NJL-model due to its inherent non-renormalizability.

The quark condensate in the GMOR relation

The quark condensate which enters the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner (GMOR) relation, is investigated in the framework of one-gluon-exchange models. The usual definition of the quark condensate via the trace of the quark propagator produces a logarithmic divergent condensate. In the product of current mass and condensate, this divergence is precisely compensated by the bare current mass. The finite value of the product in fact does not contradict the relation recently obtained by Cahill and Gunner. Therefore the GMOR relation is still satisfied.

Restoration of chiral symmetry in quark models with effective one gluon exchange

The restoration of chiral symmetry at finite density and/or temperature is investigated in a wide class of one-gluon exchange models in the instantaneous approximation. If the effective quark interaction is less divergent than $1/k^2$ for small momentum transfer $k$, we obtain Gaussian critical exponents for the chiral phase transitions at finite temperature and density, respectively. In the opposite case, for an interaction diverging faster than $1/k^2$ in the infrared region, a qualitative different behavior of the quark self-energy near the critical Fermi momentum $k_c$ and the critical temperature $T_c$, respectively, is observed. In the first scenario, we find $k_c \approx 2 \ln 2 \; T_c$, which compares well with recent data from QCD lattice simulations.

Quark Confinement in a Random Background Gross-Neveu Model

We study an extended Gross-Neveu model with $N_f$ quark flavors and with an additional SU(2) (global color) degree of freedom of the quarks. The four fermion interaction in the color channel is mediated by a random color matrix with fixed strength. The effective potential for the quark condensate and the scalar correlation function is investigated in the large $N_f$-limit. Quark anti-quark thresholds are absent in the scalar correlation function implying that the decay of the scalar meson in free quarks is avoided. The transition from the low energy to the high energy perturbative regime is found to be smooth. Perturbation theory provides a good description of Green's functions at high energies, although there is no quark liberation.

Chiral symmetry breaking in strongly coupled QED?

The coupled system of renormalized Dyson-Schwinger equations for the electron self-energy and the photon propagator are supplied with the tree level vertex as Ansatz for the renormalized three point function. The system is investigated numerically. In the case of a massive electron, the theory is ``weakly renormalizable'', i.e.\ cutoff independent for values of the cutoff below an upper limit. In this regime of cutoff independence, the quenched approximation yields good results for the electron self-energy. In the chiral limit, a logarithmic cutoff dependence of the electron self-energy is found. The question, whether a regime of cutoff independence with a spontaneously broken chiral symmetry exists in strongly coupled QED, remains open.

Chiral symmetry breaking in strongly coupled scalar QED

Scalar QED with fermions is investigated in an expansion in powers of the inverse gauge coupling constant. The fermion mass generation is studied in next to leading order of the strong coupling expansion for the Higgs-phase of the model. Chiral symmetry breaking is discussed. Our approach supports from a strong coupling point of view the results obtained earlier by Miransky, Bardeen and Kondo.

Quark Confinement in a Constituent Quark Model

On the level of an effective quark theory, we define confinement by the absence of quark anti-quark thresholds in correlation functions. We then propose a confining Nambu-Jona-Lasinio-type model. The confinement is implemented in analogy to Anderson localization in condensed matter systems. We study the model's phase structure as well as its behavior under extreme conditions, i.e.\ high temperature and/or high density.
